And they danced the whole night away. But then it was time to leave and head off to who knows where. After all, it was only a little after ten and he had invested $7,000 in the evening. But when this swinging couple came down the gangplank, they didn't know his wife was waiting, cooling her heels back on the dock. And as he came off, we were waiting out of the camera and his wife and she walked right over to him, confronting him as he came into his car and it was a big surprise to him. And she just handed him the wasp papers not to come home. He was a cool character. He was one of the young. You see the look on his face, the eyes and he just ran into gear and automatically just went right in. Oh, hi, what are you doing here? Like, not even his wife. He didn't want to give the appearance of his girlfriend that this was his wife. Just somebody that he knew. But the jig was up. It was good. The guy was cool. But you could see that look on his face when she handed him the papers that it was over with, his act was up. The girlfriend was standing there smiling, not knowing what's going on at all until the way feels over. Well, if you know you're one of them, you're one. He's yours. For the two gum shoes, it was just another case. But they had to crack a smile because for this police detective husband, this night would cost a lot more than the $7,000. He can expect to be paying as long as there's a thing called alimony. As for the betrayed wife, she didn't get really mad until she got a look at that tape. And then she saw her husband slow dancing because in their 12 years of marriage, her about to be ex husband would never dance with her. Whenever they go to parties and stuff, he'd be a wallflower to sit there and she had to beg him to get up to dance with her. And here he never sat down. Well these things can happen when you dance with danger. And we'll be back with more hard copy caught on tape after this. $14 each, six liters of premium XLD motor oil, $10 at Thee Stock Take Sale. They turned off my footstep and turned off my deck light. Do you have any weapons, ma'am? No, ma'am. Okay, stay on the phone with me if you can, okay? If you need to go for safety reasons, that's fine. But if you can, stay on the phone. Okay, do you hear them coming in the door or anything? No, when I was looking out the deck, we're not seeing them when he turned on the screw mount back for tonight. You saw him unscrewing it? Yes, and he had a blue, a blue panther on the top of his face. Oh, he won't let go! He won't let go! Come on! Ma'am? Don't go! Come here! Ma'am? Don't go! Just got a call that LID's heard a prowler in her yard and now he's trying to kick in her back door. Don't have any other details at this time. It's about seven blocks off. ... Start and bed start, close the channels. Roll over! I'm gonna land, man. I'm finishing everything. I'll tell you, put your hands behind your head. Put your hands behind your head. Stay right there! Hold it! Stay back, please. Give me your arm. Put your hand back here now, bud. Stay right there! Okay, ma'am, fine. Got a gun on you or anything? No. He got a big old black gun that was in my house! Give me time, get a man. Come on, lay there. He got a big old black gun that was in my house! Come on down. 10-3-16, I'm sorry. Come on, man, damn! Hurry up with the ambulance! Something, give me something, man. Every 17th, I'm out with him. We've got him trusty. We need a message. Man? Oh, I lay here. Oh, God. Okay, who shot who? Is there anybody else in there? Is he with the iron man or with the... Apparently, it looks like that someone broke into this lady's house and someone inside must have shot this guy. We're unclear right now at the time, but the guy laying on the ground has been shot. Hi. Hi. This is the house, huh? Yeah. Where's the gun at? You know? No. Who else is in the house? Shonda. The people that live here? Uh-huh. Shonda. Okay. Police! Yeah? There's someone in my room. He's bleeding very badly. Who shot him? I don't know. I was hiding. They just thought she was the only one in the house. Edward, 317. Go ahead. If you would, we're gonna need probably another ambulance. We've got another subject here in the house that's been shot. You want to go outside. Go on outside. Lay down. Just stay out here. Edward, 317. We can clear. Edward, 317. Clear. Edward, 317. Clear. Edward, 317. Clear. Edward, 317. Clear. Edward, 317. Clear. Edward, 317. Clear. Edward, 317. Clear. Edward, 317. Clear. Edward, 317. Also, he might as well start a crime scene. Oh my god! Who's got the shotgun? Who had the shotgun? I don't know. I don't know. We need an ambulance here. I got it. Oh god! Right down the floor. There's a shot here. Apparently, we've got one trigger. Maybe we're gonna need to stay out of here, OK? I'm just getting her clothes so she can go in there. Who's got the shotgun? I don't know. I don't know who had the shotgun. The guy that's out there, was he staying with y'all or he broke into? No. He didn't stay here. So he broke into? Yes. OK. I think he's the one that came in. I didn't even know that. All right, but does anyone in your house have a gun? No. Who's in the house? Come on over here. That's our house. Come on over here and have a seat. I want y'all to sit down right in here, OK? Sit down over here. OK. Y'all don't get up, OK? I'm gonna look around the house. Make sure there's nobody else in here. This room looks pretty clean. According to the lady that lives in this house, there's not supposed to be anybody in here. And two intruders broke in, we're unsure exactly who shot who, but both of them are shot at this time. Here's the back door where they kicked it open, apparently. You can see the frames all split. I'm unsure exactly what the details are regarding this, since we've got two people that are shot right now. Where is the shotgun, though? Who used the shotgun? I don't know, because I didn't get the seat. I didn't, I don't know nothing. I hid in the closet. They didn't even know I was in their house. They just thought she was the only person. You are the two people in this house. There's a man back there, dead, with a shotgun blast. Where is the shotgun? Go ahead and shoot her. Sir, we don't know anything. All I know is the door kicked in. The door kicked in here. How did this guy get in? What guy? The guy laying in that room. The guy laying in that room. We don't know because, see, I was on my phone. She was sleeping. OK, it was, she was sleeping in her bed. She says they were both in here, one in the closet, one in the closet, one in the closet, and one in the closet. OK, I'm gonna go check on her. OK. She says they were both in here, one in the closet, whether she had the door open or not, I don't know. But she said she was hovered down in the closet, never saw anything. The kid, the 15-year-old kid, came in this room and had this weapon. And it looks like the men, the two actors, were searching through the house for this man that they claimed that, you know, which substantiates the fact that they were doing some type of retaliation when he caught them by surprise. Evidently, he was shot the first time in the throat and dropped the gun. As he turned around and ran out of here, he was shot in the rear end, is what I'm suspecting. This guy, evidently, was shot here. And as he turned around, he had flung blood, went to jump through the window, and ended up where he is here. Now, whether he was shot once or twice, I don't know, but he was shot with a good, healthy double-eyed bug. Now, we've got blood splatters going this way as possibly he was flinging, but... We were just advised by the detectives that the two females on the scene went ahead and told them that there was another person that did enter the house with a shotgun to help them, who they called before they called 911. He arrived just before we did and ended up shooting both the assailants that broke into the house. He fled out the back door when the police arrived, taking the shotgun with him. He was afraid. You know, the police show up. He's just shot someone he didn't know was going to get in trouble. Anyway, the detectives went ahead and contacted him. He did come back to the scene and give a statement. They were unable to find the shotgun. He stated he threw it down while he was running. He saw somebody fall on him and he thought it was the police, so he went and tossed it down. And when we went back to look, we couldn't find it. Thursday... He walked over here with her, had it in his hand talking to her. What did he say when he was over here with us? What did he say to you? He was going to hit me. What did he tell you exactly? He was going to kill me. What did he say? Exactly. What did he say to you? He said, I'm going to hit you in the head with this. I'm going to knock you down next week. What did he say? He said he was going to kill me. OK. What did he say? He said he was going to kill her. He told you he was going to kill you. And he had the bat in his hand. I'm going to divorce him. Well, that's probably the thing to do. But right now, we need to address this problem here. When he said this, did you feel like you were in danger? I know I'm in danger. He's been trying to kill me. He's beating me up and everything else. You're going to take me to jail, Rich. You got it. Yeah. Let's get him. What for? Well, I ran over that baseball bat. I went over and hit that piece of metal with it. And I saw this metal in a rug. That's all I done. You walked over by the car where she was sitting with it, too. We watched you walk over there towards her with a baseball bat. Yes, sir. Well, you're the bomb. I'm not the bomb. And she said you threatened to kill her? No, sir. And she felt like you were capable of doing it? She felt like she was in danger. Man, I ain't in danger. I didn't do it. I didn't. They're going to take me to jail. I will never get out. Man, I didn't do it. Come on out. Then can I go out? No. It's too damn hot for you to be out here. And then he's not going to hurt me? Not. He's going to be in jail, ma'am. OK. Thank you. I mean, shot in the face is bringing something bad to the family. Anybody? I had a 413. I've got the white male in white shirt in custody. Everything's okay. Stand up. Ow. Walk. You're not hurt. I'm on St. Louis, just north of Berry. I'm all right. They're chasing the other black male back towards the northwest. Where you guys at on St. Louis? They're out there. Just lay right there. What's going on? The officer saw him commit a 40, theft or a burglary. They eluded him. He gave chase. We've been trying to catch up with him for 10 miles. He started over an open and 30. So we were done, you know, 65, 75 miles an hour to get over him. Oh, you caught the other one? Oh, I thought we were after somebody else. I mean, I'll take it. I caught him breaking into cars at open and 930. You're off duty? I'm off duty. Okay. When I tried to stop him, when I tried to stop him, I tried to back into the van. Then they took off. All on ass and went across. A whole bunch of the parking lot pylons and stuff through the gas station, back out onto 30. And then it was just a chase from there. The white guy is telling me that he was kidnapped. And this guy was going to kill him. That's why he bailed out in a ring. I just picked him up out here. When you say you tried to stop him, did you get out and approach him in person? Yeah. In full uniform? In uniform. And they tried to back into your van. He started to back up in the van, realized he wasn't going to go through the van. And then he jumped on all those concrete deals there for the parking at the Waffle House. Shot across there. There's a pickup truck that they were trying for. This is the pickup truck they were in. They were trying for a pickup truck there by the Burger King between Burger King and Jack London's in the parking lot. I was just sitting there watching them. I don't know, man. They took off like it would have been. How were they trying to break in? A screwdriver? They started into the back of it. And I guess they saw me, because I turned around and started looking at them. The guy was sitting here and they were sitting right there. You mean into the bed? Or the back window? I was in the van looking back at them. I hit the brake lights so I could light them up. They just took off. How exactly were they breaking in, though? I didn't catch that part. Well, it looked like they were going into the vehicles there. When I first spotted them, they were working on a pickup truck. The white boy saying he was kidnapped? Yeah, the white guy is saying he was kidnapped by the black guy and that the black guy was threatening to kill him. And I said, well, why did you sprint past my police car and run from me and not give up until you were headed off by another police car? Well, I was scared I was trying to get away from them. Yeah, right. Stick with that, buddy. Good story. I bet it's just a pickup truck, too. Yeah, right. They need to realize you never know where a policeman may be. Good boy. We don't all drive white cars with pretty blue lights on top. That's right. 132 inbush. I got him at gunpoint. Okay, gunpoint 132 inbush. Cover is code 3. Okay, we'll still send it code 3. The true story of one woman's incredible courage, Sigourney Weaver and Brian Brown. Gorillas in the Mist Sunday. Tonight on Code 3, a work crew on Oahu, Hawaii fights the odds to free a chopper pilot trapped underwater. Los Angeles firefighters attempt to rescue an injured driver from a car before it takes a deadly plunge. The only thing that I can think of is we're going to fall. And emergency workers risk their lives searching for survivors in New York City's U.S. Air Disaster. That's what I remember most of, the water just rising, rising. Prior to the tests, a little bit more after the Hello, I'm Gil Gerard. This year, more than 90,000 Americans will lose their lives in accidents. 90,000. It's a staggering figure. Yet many more would die if not for the paramedics and rescue teams who respond to the code three alarm. Sometimes professionals aren't the only ones who get involved. Ordinary citizens, people like you and me, are often the first on the scene. That was the case on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, where camera woman Vicki Keith was shooting documentary footage for Hawaii Electric. The day was Friday the 13th. I had only just spoken to this pilot 10 minutes before. We had been sitting around talking about how it was Friday the 13th and we hope nothing happened. The pilot, Steve Cucks, flew choppers in Vietnam. Crew chief Warren Emerald, known as Tiny, is also a Vietnam vet. The funny part about it, we were just talking about Vietnam. We were talking about Vietnam prior to he taking off. Because he was stationed now at the same time I was there and I was at the boat when he was a pilot. And we were laughing and joking about Vietnam when we came home. As he was coming back on his fourth flight, he had read you to me at time that I was picking up some electrical problems. The chopper begins to seriously malfunction. Cucks tries to stabilize it and set it down. When the crash came, it was a flashback. Like I was back in Vietnam again. Your buddy is down, you gotta go and help him. So there's no such thing as slow reaction. The pilot lies unconscious and trapped underwater. His legs pin beneath 1600 pounds of wreckage. The chopper's alarm system warns that the aircraft could explode at any moment, which forces some members of the work crew to keep their distance. Get out, get out. Come on, give me a hand. Come on, Steve. Come in the water, come in the water. When I see my friend hurt and there's no equipment, nothing down there that could have helped us to move the chopper. So I just ask myself, OK, I gotta do something. You just can't stand there fool and see your friend die. The pilot's left arm has been nearly severed in the crash. He's losing critical amounts of blood and he's going into shock. He was a man with me in Vietnam. That's the extra incentive for me to jump in there. Because we were just talking about, gee, we went to all that hell and we came home. So when the accident happened, that's what I went through my mind. Hey, come on buddy, you never come home for a day. As he lies broken and bleeding, Cucks regains consciousness. Tiny and his crew cover the victim with clean rags to keep him warm. You all right? Doctor, he's coming now. The ambulance is coming. Don't worry about that. Steve asked about his fingers. Whatever, he felt some numbness. And I explained to him, oh, there's nothing wrong with your hand. There's only lacerations. From what we were taught, even in the service, you don't tell a man how bad he is, you say he's going to get better. You try to reassure him that he's going to make it. It's not just for faulting, no more. Your arm is off. He didn't need that. Steve, don't let this put you on a backboard again. We're going to split your arm. We're going to fly you in the sky. No, no, it's a simple practice, Steve. Don't worry about it, brother. Take it easy, man. Steve, you can read okay. Recognize? Yeah? All right. He's a redhead, though. All right. Come on, man. Paramedics fly the patient to a Honolulu hospital where he undergoes emergency reconstructive surgery. I have no doubt in my mind that their actions saved my life and that I would not be here if they had hesitated much longer or they had not been willing to pick up the helicopter or do all of the other things that they did throughout that day. I wouldn't be here. Watching Tiny on the videotape actually physically pick up the helicopter, which is a feat that even somebody his size can't do, and he did it. It's just incredible that he actually did that, but he did. Come in the water, bro. Come in the water. Everybody did their job, and that's why I told Steve, thank you, Tiny, for everything. I said, no, you thank everybody, mostly the men upstairs. After several more operations, Steve Cucks has almost regained full use of his arm. Because of his injuries, he's no longer able to pilot helicopters, but he now shares his considerable experience teaching others to fly. So be quick and save at Hyundai. This year roughly 45,000 Americans will die in motor vehicle accidents. The causes range from simple mishaps to drunk driving and reckless speed. Our streets and highways can become a danger zone as we're about to see in two separate rescue attempts. First we go to a Los Angeles freeway overpass where a female driver literally hangs between life and death. She's lost control of her small car which teeters precariously 40 feet up. Passing motorists have tried to secure it with ropes but it could break loose at any moment. As emergency personnel converge on the scene, a young woman remains trapped inside the compressed car. She's seriously injured, imprisoned beneath the steering wheel. She was yelling and screaming so I decided that we weren't going to endanger any more people by putting them into the car until we got it secured because it was just barely hanging onto the guard rail post. When the tow truck secured to the vehicle, he only secured to the rear half of the vehicle and when he tried to wench the car up with her still in it, we noticed that the car was actually tearing in half. Once we got the back of the car secured with the tow trucks, then we decided to put the ladder truck underneath and it bothered me that when they did that, Captain McGrail and his firemen were both underneath that vehicle putting that strap on to secure it. And until we got that out, it was kind of an anxious moment for all of us. The car would rock and creak and it sounded like it was going to fall over at any time. So what I did is I held her hand and I tried to comfort her and make her feel a little safer. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Firemen bring out the powerful jaws of life and other tools to cut and pry their way into the vehicle. Then, at enormous risk to himself, a fireman climbs into the car and reaches the hysterical victim. When I first stepped into the car, the only thing that I could think of was we were going to fall. That was it. Yeah. I just remember looking down and standing on the dashboard. It's kind of a funny feeling when you're standing on the front of a dashboard because the car was vertical. My knees were definitely knocking and I could get her feet untangled from the pedals. After that, we were able to get her out. The victims ordeal has lasted nearly three hours. Safety personnel will continue working for several more, clearing away the wreckage. Highway patrol officers say the young woman was neither drunk nor speeding at the time of the accident. Apparently, she simply grew tired in the early morning hours and momentarily lost control of her car. This driver was lucky. Paramedics rushed her to a local trauma center and she fully recovered. In our next segment, we'll see what happens when alcohol and excessive speed cause a driver to lose control of the wheel. The setting is North Lauderdale, Florida, where Bill Flueger describes the chain of events that propelled him into the role of good Samaritan. A motorcyclist was ahead of me and I was driving to work and a guy passed us at a high rate of speed. When he tried to get back into our lane, he overcorrected and the car spun and it spun four or five times and flipped into the canal upside down. When rescue workers arrive, they find the unconscious driver pinned underwater by the overturned vehicle. Flueger and other passing motorists hold the victim's head above water. When we arrived, the vehicle was halfway in the water. We noticed that the victim was also trapped in the vehicle and could not be freed. We then actually went into the water approximately five feet deep and tried to secure the vehicle the best we could. It was sitting within about two to three feet of muck. The victim has only a few inches of breathing space as the car sinks into the mud and debris. Firefighters apply the jaws of life despite the underwater danger. When you're operating heavy hydraulic equipment with 14,000 pounds of spreading force with zero visibility, you have to be really steady and when you're doing it under just a sense of feel, it's very critical that you don't slip up. You don't think about all the contamination in the water, the alligators or the snakes or anything. You just go. The driver remains trapped until rescuers abandon the jaws of life and finish the job with bare hands. We finally freed his legs and actually spread the metal from the wreckage. We then put him in a Stokes type basket and brought him up the embankment and Broward County Paramedics worked him from there and brought him to the hospital. So serious is the contamination in the water ditch. The victim will eventually develop gangrene in his broken leg. But Bill Flugger and two of the brave citizens will have saved a life and they'll receive public commendations for their heroic actions. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, this driver also escaped death, but not before he lost his leg because of the accident and the polluted waters of the canal. Of all forms of travel, major commercial airlines are one of the safest. Last year, out of nearly six million flights, US jetliners were involved in only four fatal accidents. But when something does go seriously wrong in the air, it can turn into a tragic and terrifying spectacle. That's what happened to US Air Flight 405. It started on a bitter cold Sunday night in March at New York's bustling LaGuardia Airport. It was supposed to take off originally around 7.30, but it kept getting delayed. It was 8 o'clock and we were finally beginning to get on around 8.30. Again, saw the snow coming down. I thought, they're going to close this airport. There's no way they're going to let us take off. Well, as we got on, they de-iced one time. I remember that. And then just before we were ready to push back, the captain said he had requested one more time to have it de-iced again. And we got closer and I thought, well, I guess they're not going to de-ice. It must be okay. Plus other planes were taking off in front of us. So we got onto the runway going all the way to the end. We lifted off about 20 to 30 feet in the air and the plane lifted pretty heavily about 45 degrees to the left. At that point, I knew we had a problem. That was my first indication. But then it seemed like it leveled off and I thought, we pulled it out. That's great. And then a second or so after that, we slammed into the ground. An army of emergency vehicles descends on Flushing Bay. Dozens of rescue workers scramble down the icy banks. As the initial reports, which sounded like they were confirmed immediately, was that the plane had landed in the water and was on fire. A ball of fire rolls through the plane's fuselage engulfing both passengers and crew. Burning fuel spreads across the water. Everybody was scared, everybody was screaming. So I just covered my face and the explosion happened like two seats before me or three seats before me. The second thing I know, I was in the air and I was under the water. I thought my seat was upside down. My seat had been thrown out about 20 feet from the wreckage just as we came over that embankment. It threw my seat out and several other passengers too. And I was still strapped to my seat. So I undid my seatbelt and it was about waist-high water so I was able to stand up in it. And I remember looking back at the airplane about 20 feet away and there's flames all over and people are screaming and people are yelling for help. There was nothing I could do. They were in the airplane and it was on fire and there was no way for me to get in. I tried to find a way to get in but there was no way to get in. It was like a giant car wreck in the water. Steel was mangled, a lot of debris, people still trapped in the aircraft and a rising tide. It causes so little space in the crushed plane. Divers abandon their air tanks. They search underwater holding their breath, feeling blindly in the darkness for survivors. That's what I remember most, the water just rising and rising. Getting into the plane and working around inside the fuselage where you had half this plane was disintegrated, seats were mangled, cabinets were mangled, the plane was at sharp edges, diesel, you know, aviation fuel was all over the place. It was not an easy operation. We had to use hearse tools, hand tools, anything we can and it all had to be worked off from boats. We probably suffer from exposure. In some instances, divers must be helped from the freezing water, suffering from exhaustion and exposure. Priests arrive on the scene to administer last rites. More and more bodies are brought to shore and placed in a makeshift morgue. Despite a broken shoulder and other injuries, crash survivor Morsi saves two lives. If I don't have any problem, I go inside the world and look for people to survive, you know. It's a very bad story, you know, it's very sad too, you know. You have to go on and try to understand why you were spared, certainly have a new appreciation for life and just kind of enjoy the sunshine a little bit more than I did before. I have never been to an airplane crash in my career. I hope I don't go to another one. It wasn't, it was a disaster. I feel for the victims and I feel for the survivors who will be remembering this for a long time. I'm glad I was there to give my service, but I hope I never have to do it again. Due to the courageous efforts of rescue personnel, 24 of the 51 people aboard Flight 405 survived the disaster. Watson, a repressible, tough, private eye to do. See, it's a perfect fit.
