Steven Well, it was a heck of acel another thing. I'm not sure Dimitri is used to this half volley coming back. I think a lot of the players he would have played against, that back end return might have been a winner. One game over in the first set. We saw Dimitri of course in doubles yesterday, but he does appear to have a good deal of talent for a youngster. They can stand aiming high in their tennis ambitions. They've just had the President's Cup in the capital Tash Kent. Nothing new, they've got him over there. This is beautiful tennis from Petra after tremendous power off the high backhand smash and picking up volleys from his shoelaces and adding interest. I think last night Tomasovic was quite a relaxed type of player, not overawed by any situation. Just a matter of whether he's got enough guns to go with someone like Rafter. You would doubt it, but he's very composed. If you do that better. Beautiful combination of shot. Took the return of serve before the top of the bounce and really knifed it deep with a little bit of backspin which makes it cut through all over the net moving in and across for the shoulder high backhand volley. Dimitri was stuck with the half volley. He really just put it up very tamely. See it in their replay from the reverse angle. Petra has been able to pick up the half volleys and really do something with them. Two break points for Australia. Shaky second serve. That can return. Had a look. Just catching the tape but could easily have gone over and it would have been nasty to deal with. So four. Still break point for Rafter. And the 2-1 scoreline indicating a break of serve to Rafter leading 2-1 in the first set. The top swing lob down the line. Surprise Rafter both the choice of shot and the quality. Not quite getting in position to be able to really nail it. Good service winner rather than an ace. He did just get a racket tip to it but what a great serve. That's the one that seems to be working so well for him. The slider down the centre in the second court. I would think just like his countryman Oleg Gorodov, backhand return of Tomasovic might be a little bit safer than the forehand. I would think Rafter as the match wears on will serve quite a few balls to this forehand. That's one of the advantages he has against a two-handed backhand for Kicker going wide and that time Dimitri forced to go one-handed to actually reach the ball. Much better backhand volley then or backhand smash. On the line, those for the game. 3-1. He's a bit quicker out of the blocks tonight isn't he? A little bit shaking in his first set. That was his first match of course since beating Mark Fulipursos in the final of the US Open. Quite as many pre-match nerves in these dead rubbers. Big difference than going into a live singles match. A time for experimentation. You might play shots in a match like this that you wouldn't attempt in say Wimbledon or Australia Open final. Well exactly but Pat's had so many matches of late. It's good to see him out here in this dead rubber. Quite often these days you see that the big players avoid these dead rubbers and let someone else play but he knows the crowd here in Townsville has come to see him. I think from his opponent's point of view, absolutely a time to savour a time to practice and experiment with a few things. Pat Rafter very safe with the forehand not doing much with it and was on the defensive with the ball across court which opened up the line. It was a bit. Sir Thomas Savage hangs in. Rafter leading three games to two in the first set. If you have a car accident, just how far will your insurance company go to help you? Okay okay everyone looking really happy now. That's because some obvious things run in families like hair and eyesight or sporting prowess and academic ability. Looking good looking good here we go here we go. But some family traits you just can't see. Type 2 diabetes can be one of them. For information about diabetes talk to your doctor or Diabetes Australia. Diabetes it's a family thing. Three games to two in the first set. One break of serve. Two Rafter that came in the third game. He's reading an article in the newspaper this morning in which he's mapped out his program for the remainder of the year concluding with the ATP championships. He serves like that in them. He will be number one which is his stated aim. He's heightened to gain the angle going out wide to the forehand. The ATP championship Peter that you mentioned I think probably will decide at the end of the year who will be ranked number one in the world. I mean out of Sampras and Rafter I think Rios might be just slightly out of the race. The indoor events that are left are probably not right up his alley and I think that uh court service wise you're speaking about. The odds are it's going to be Rafter and Sampras. That particular tournament really does carry a lot of weight. There's a ton of points on that ranking points at the end of the year. It's the last event and the outcome will probably be decided there in Hanover. Sampras is defending a lot there. Patrick is not playing the Grand Slam Cup though interestingly. Obviously he doesn't need the money these days. Another race of a love game to Rafter. Well there's no ranking points for the race to number one in that particular event Peter. As you mentioned there is a lot of cash but interesting that Pat's foregoing that. I think a great decision really in respect of the situation he's in. He may never get a chance to do it again. He might be ranked one for the next three years. We don't know but give himself every opportunity I think to reach the pinnacle of the men's game and that's a good decision. How did you view Sampras decision in the light of the United States losing the Davis Cup semi-final to the United States losing the Davis Cup semi-final? Well I think it's a good decision. I think it's a good decision. I think it's a good decision. The United States losing the Davis Cup semi-final to not play it. Sampras, Agassi etc. It was interesting but the thought I had was that had they been playing Australia in the semi-final that they may have all played. Why? Because there's a lot of rivalry between the two nations and they would be called wimps if they didn't turn up. What by us? Absolutely and for a long time. Agassi's reason he said if it hadn't been played in San Diego or Las Vegas he would have played. Lovely backhand smash again. They make good beer there I'm told. Las Vegas is a good athleticism isn't it? So easy for patties. So relaxed and I've said it before but that could be the best backhand smash I think I've ever seen. Certainly worked on it. He's got a good teacher. He's done two break points for a five-two lead. I'd like a lead. We can unload on that first serve. Oh net popped up and he decided to run further out of court and take it this one take it on the forehand maybe if you've been able to take it on the back and he would have been closer in towards the net for the next shot but nevertheless one more break point. It's going to come back by Dimitri. I wonder if the coach is going to take a picture of these two guys at the end of the game. They call him Henry by the way. Maybe he found out that Harry Hopman's real name was Henry and he wanted to be just like Harry. He's good enough can't top that. So the break point to Rafter. Rafter. Okay Nobby I'll call you in New York. One of the best things about AAPT Smart Chat is the people you deal with. We're at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Center and at day three of this Davis Cup World Group qualifying affair Australia and Uzbekistan and Pat Rafter serving for the first set leading five games to two against Demasevich. All called out. Just clipped the top of the net wide. Wide. Demasevich. This isn't the best drop volley from Pat Rafter but good enough. Just like this really doesn't suit the drop shots does it? You really have to have the player moving the wrong way to beat him with the drop shot. These players are just too quick these days to not get to a ball that bounces so high on this type of surface. It's a dangerous shot. He loaded on that didn't he? Took out the big wood. Hand on 90. Waper was going the wrong way. Probably wouldn't have made that much difference. You know a guy's in trouble Peter when he starts guessing which way the serve's going because Dmitri just took a risk there and moved to the center of the court hoping to take it on the backhand but you really can't afford to start doing that. Love game to Rafter and he takes the first six games to two. In fact I might calculate he's lost just two points on serving the set is that right? Yes he's been very very solid one in the opening game in the second game and one in the fourth game. That's certainly a great experience for him to take on the world number two. Certainly if you're serving if you're Dmitri and you're serving now you realize that if you've only won two points in the first set on your opponent's serve you better not make too many errors on your own because the odds of you winning the set then are not good. That was a very tricky little approach shot that one the off backhand and Dmitri was headed towards his backhand corner running away from the direction of the ball. Corner running away from the direction of the ball. Fault. 15. Chip and charge. We're able to control the boy. Come down and have fun with the two of them. Uh, trust that again? Yes. Very weighty ground strokes from Hap Rafter from the back of the court. Solid deep with amount of top spin. Really kicking up. And then we had the angle went for the cross court forehand. Got there in lots of time. 30 all. He's giving it a good shot, Dimitri, but he's being outgunned at the moment. Good. Good. Good point. Good. Good point. Dimitri will be thinking what do I have to do to win a point here? Very solid from the back of the court. Dimitri just forced to go for something a little bit extra, making the error. Good point. Good effort to sneak in there from Rafter. Good time to sneak in and hit the drop volley. Another break point now to Australia. Good point. Second game point. Good effort by Dimitri. He's held serve. One lap, second set. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. Good point. He's not getting too many free points on his own, Sir Dimitri. I don't think you'd see Pat Raft in the final of the US Open try a shot like that. That was pretty low percentage. That was Townsville dead rubber. Mark that down on the table. Not a bad comeback from him. Love the way he did deuce. And what is your string? That was a big serve. And at the right time trying to stop the rot in the second set from the reverse angle. That's the shot that Dimitri made several errors on in the first set. He made several errors on in yesterday's doubles taking too much of a swing on his own hand volley. It's time he gets away with it. Looks a little risky though. That was a good comeback. You say four great points. They go to the chair with Raft and leading three games to two. If you want to save on your international phone calls take a APT Smart Chat for a spin. You're the guy that they're looking for. That's a big secret about a man who's been dead for 50 years. He's still the same age, still the same person. It's got to be him. But there's more than one thing about him. How did you do that? That's very, very different. Premiering Thursday, 7.30. The visitor on seven. A bit of liberty in the Australian camp. The Incredible Hulk. Looks a bit like you at the pool this afternoon, J.A. Oh, I'm glad you said J.A. My heart missed a beat there for a second. After serving three, two. Right at the body. You were speaking during the break of the grip that Dimitri uses. Actually, not just Dimitri, but some of the others as well. You were saying that it's a little bit awkward or can be a little bit awkward? Well, I tend to think that all the players, particularly Ogara Dolphin and Dimitri here, they look like they've been coached by the same person. I think the first thing I would do, I mean, who am I now to really tell them anything, but is change the grip on their serve and their forehand. Excuse me, forehand volley. Yes. Very much like an Eastern forehand grip to hit the serve with. Most players, including Rafal and the good servers, use a continental grip for their serve. Also pretty much a continental grip for their forehand and backhand volley, whereas this lad and Ogara Dolphin tend to hit a very flat first serve. Not able to really kick the ball that much because of the flat grip they've got. Morris Beckett is the only guy, Peter, that of great distinction, I think, that I can remember that used a forehand grip on his server, but he had an incredibly strong wrist and used to come over the ball with his wrist. Most players, including all the real good servers that I know, including Pete Sampras, use that continental type grip. Another touch from Dimitri. Nice little touch shot here from Pat Raffer. Dimitri had already come in very close. 15. He's tried that shot a couple of times on the Dippings cross-court backhand of Rafter. Dimashovic is making a mistake here, just not opening the face of the racket enough. He probably should have either moved forward or back. Forward to volley or back to hit the ball when it was higher off the court. The half volley was very dangerous. He didn't get down to the ball at all. He was quite erect. Missed one, Pat. Dimitri thought it was out. He sure did. Half checked his shot. No overrule from the umpire. You can always tell by the crowd murmur if they feel the line call was incorrect. Five-two. Rafter second set. No worries, love. Some of the fellows are out looking for them now. Another mid, mate. Full-hopped Carlton mid. Bored? Lonely? Nothing to do? Call 8411123 and put a little fun and excitement into your life. We've made it easy for you. Call now 8411123. Five-two. Pat Rafter over Dimitri Tomasovic from Uzbekistan. For those of you still wondering where Uzbekistan is in Central Asia, north of Afghanistan. Landlocked. One of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world. The other one being Liechtenstein. Population of 23.5 million. Independence was granted on the 31st of August, 1991. He's following his mistake here. He just follows it straight down the middle. He thought that Dimitri was going to move more to the forehand side. The only volling mistakes he's made or not. Well now he's really in trouble on serve. I think he's choking. He's lost a point on serve. Do you want to call the press conference? Now it's to our 40. This is a very unusual predicament for him. He's not lost a point since the fourth game of the first set on serve. Well the odds are from this position, certainly from 15.40, that a player of Rafter's caliber will hold serve. Two break points down. I think that might be hard for a club player to imagine, but such is the competence of the serve and the volley that 15.40 is not the hole that it might seem. I think the ball was expert at it. He came up with some brilliant serves when he was down low 40 to save the day. I like that. He's confident on that one down the middle isn't he? He's got an excellent combination of serves on the backhand court. He's got the one thundering deep spun serve into the backhand corner. He's got the kicker. He's got the slider down the center. He serves into the body well. I think the serve into the body has really helped him a lot over the last year or so. A guy like Goran Ivanishvic for instance rarely goes for that serve. You know he's going to go one way or the other, but Rafter uses it into the body a lot to back it up with his volleys. He's difficult to get the ball past if he gets a good serve into the body. He's a much more complete player than someone like Goran. Got him. Break point for the fourth time this game. Low return, using the pat to half volley. He contained the damage by keeping it low forced. Yes, and he has broken. First time in the match. He's been down break point or break points every time he stepped up to serve in this set as well as a couple of occasions in the first. He's broken twice. Rafter ready for the kill. Rafter trying to pack on the pressure. Not a lot on the approach shot, not much on the volley. Dmitri really coming up with some good tennis. Seemingly growing with confidence to try to come up to four or five and make Rafter try to serve it out again. That's a fair space for the game. Love game on serve to Dmitri Tomasovic and Rafter leading 5-4 seconds in. Hi, I'm Ben. And I'm Laura. Vital Dance is great new music. We're at Heaven 2. And this is how we party with soap. Pat Rafter leading in the second set and stepping up to serve for the sets and the match. And also the rubber. Sliding body. Two handers. Down the middle a little bit now getting a good swing at it. He seems to have been a step slow to that one most of the night. But starting to understand that Pat's going there a lot against him. Does he understand what sorry made me wonder? He probably gets the truth. So three match points, two match points to Pat Rafter. Service winner for the game, the set and the match. Henry's got the camera out. We thought he might have. Pat Rafter 6-2, 6-4. He chased everything down. He didn't treat it really as a dead rubber apart from that one drop shot that he played. And he emerged victorious as I said. 6-2, 6-4. First set taking 25 minutes. And the second set a little bit longer taking 35 minutes. Next match is going to feature Josen Stoltenberg. And he'll be up against Oleg Gordodov. We'll just see if we can get Pat over to the announcer's microphone. There are scores. In fact, make that hundreds of young kids and young ladies as well. They want the t-shirt thrown at them. Don't think it's going to happen. Now where's Pat going? He's going to throw away a t-shirt. It looks that way or is he going to give it to somebody? Somebody special in the crowd. We just can't see who that is. Obviously a great fan of Pat's. He certainly has many of those. And also an autograph. Well, that is going to be treasured. Obviously a preconceived idea by Pat. And that indeed to be treasured. Fantastic. No wonder he's a popular sportsman. Tenor sports he's giving away. Let's see if we can get a road trip. We'll just go downstairs. We love seeing you on center court, particularly in your home state of Queensland. It's been a while. You've obviously enjoyed this weekend. It's been a fantastic weekend. It's always tough playing Davis Cup. You know the pressure's right on and you have to win. We came out with a good so far and Jason's got to finish it off. But coming back home and playing, I haven't played back in Queensland for a long time, but you guys have put on a great show for us. Thank you very much for making a lot of fun. Go on your walls for everything there too. Well now we've withdrawn from the Grand Slam Cup. What's the next couple of weeks for Patrick Rafter? I've got to leave to Europe on Thursday. I've got eight weeks over there now, so I'll be freezing my you-know-what off and I'll be back here in December getting ready for the Aussie Open and hopefully I can have a better Aussie Open than what I've done so far. So I'll look forward to seeing you then. Well just finally, this crowd has been superb. You've acknowledged that throughout the weekend. But just how special is it for a Queenslander to be playing on their home court, particularly in a crowd like this? North Queensland has been starved of tennis and they've obviously enjoyed it. Yeah, the reaction's been great. As I said, in the indoor arena, the sound really sort of echoes. You hear twice the amount of noise. The guys have cheered on and the crowd have followed. So thanks very much again. I don't know how much to thank you guys, but hopefully I'll see you next year in the Davis Cup tie back here somewhere. And finally, today's match, why not? Today's match, are you comfortable with the way that you're hitting things, as I said, after the US Open? I suppose you can have that downtime, but with a hectic eight weeks coming up, are you comfortable with the way things are looking for yourself? Is this the final question? Yes. Final question. Finally, you know, it's been tough to come up again after the US Open, but you know, this is Davis Cup and we all love playing it. We love the Aussies all day and I'll have a week off now and just go into the next tournament and see whatever happens, happens. But hopefully it'll be a good one. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Patrick Rafter. Patrick Rafter, consummate professional, winning his match 6-2, 6-4. Statistically, Pat Rafter very, very strong on the serve. 72% of first serves in. He won 81% of the time. A big advantage over his smaller opponent. Seven aces, and where he does a lot of his damage at the net, Fitzie. Well, you would have thought that over two sets like that, he might win more points than that at the net, but obviously that's where he has his major strength, and of course tonight we saw how well he served, particularly to the second court. Down the middle, he really did hit a high percentage of first serves in. Tiny lapse at the end, but really showed his class. Thank you, guys. The applause wasn't for you, by the way. It could have been, but it was for an Asbekistani dance troupe performing down here on centre court not too far from us. Some lovely music and a very interesting dance routine there, and I think everybody in the Townsville Entertainment Centre enjoyed it, as they did last night when the Woody's wrapped up the tie, winning their match in straight sets. Let's hear what they had to say afterwards. Yeah, I think we played in spurts. We played some really great points, but didn't back up as well as we normally back up with another solid one after we played a terrific point, and I think we also had chances to really knock it off, you know, nearly...we should have probably got to 5-1 in the third, just little things there that we probably got to sharpen a little bit and get back to the level that we're used to, because we set ourselves very high levels. Well, you started off the match 3-0 in the first set. It looked like you were really going to steamroll them, but I don't know whether it was a combination of maybe your form not being levelled throughout or whether your opponents actually surprised you a little bit. Yeah, I think they surprised us a little bit, really, because they really did come out with some pretty good volleys at times where we thought we might get something a little bit easier to do something with, and, you know, credit to them, they could have really sort of folded, because we were in a lot of service games, we were making a lot of returns, and they stood up to the pressure fairly well. It was interesting that Demetri, the guy that didn't play the other singles, he played very solid and looked like almost a better all-round player than the guy that played their number one, so perhaps you'll see a little more of him in the future. Well, all four players had a high service percentage, around 80%, give or take, all of you, and it was interesting to see that finally at the end of the match you started making the crosses at the right time, but you didn't get a lot of hits at second serves, which you normally used to. Yeah, we both thought that Agoradov might get a low percentage in, I mean, he very much goes for the first serve, but, you know, credit to him, he was firing them down, and Demetri, you know, I think that was the type of... the type of style he probably plays generally in all the matches. So, you know, they just volleyed really well and a little bit better than what we thought, but you were able to, as you say, cross at the right time and get through the match.
