Hello, glad you could join us and yes I realise it's not football season, but I, like plenty of you, can't wait for season 1997 to start. Port Adelaide gives the Adelaide Crows a local rival, and a tradition will start on April 20 when the two first meet at Football Park, trying getting a ticket to that game. But the Crows have already had 6 years in the big league and we've decided to put together half an hour of highlights from some of their very best games, together with interviews from the people involved, as well as a chat with the people from Port Adelaide. It won't all be in this week's show, but over the next two months you'll see nine great games and surprisingly plenty of those have been against Hawthorne. Today's highlights are from the only final they played each other in, the 1993 elimination final. It was on at the MCG and the game was an absolute beauty. The elimination final gets underway, the war goes up at the MCG as they face each other and Wren wins first up, Jarman goes down, it's gathered out of the middle by Ayers who started in the engine room of the game. Kick out wide and out of bounds on the 50. Darren Jarman belted down in the very first contest for the ball in the centre and this reminds us of Dermot Brereton in that grand final in 89. Yes, looks like the wheat coming charging through, Wayne Wiedemann doing a good job there. Ah yes, this definitely has atmosphere. The kick by Tragenza is smothered, comes to Liptak, he's right in front, can't get the ball, harassing Cooper, terrific by Condon, magnificent defence, the kick out wide, it sits up and goes back over the head of Jarman, grabbed by Tragenza, now Andrew Jarman, centering kick is perfect, bone marks. That's one of the values of Andrew Jarman, so pinpoint with his disposal if he's not put under any pressure as he was there, plenty of time to move, had a look up and what a marvellous kick it was. Bit unlucky for Darren Jarman when the ball sat up and went straight back over him, but could this be the first goal of the final? Bone, 55 metres out, oh it's good, it's home! Crows hit the front, Collins up towards centre wing, Gowes has to wait, McDermott there with one hand, comes to the back, Pittman to McDermott, through to Liptak, short pass up towards the back, he's smart, a good pick up, gets past Jenke easily, booms a long kick, oh terrific kick, yes! Gear versus smart, Gear with the left hand, gives it straight to Anderson, here's a big chance for the Crows again, Randall Bone, hand pass to Liptak, Liptak to Modra, Modra straightens up from 35 metres and Tony Modra goes bang and he's kicked the goal. Chris Langford, oh smart, and hasn't he been good since they moved him forward this season? Oh a great play by Dren, tried to grab it out of the pack, Wiedemann, crashes his way through then drops the ball and the up pass said exactly that, a free kick to Greg Deer and that could be 50. A bad play by Wiedemann, must hand ball that ball back on the full, there's Mark Mecham on screen, no need for that indiscretion because everything's going the way of the Crows. So Greg Deer to the half forward line, Lawrence in front and the umpire's found a free kick now Dunstan's on the lead, he comes out Hudson's there also, Paul Hudson marks again. So Paul Hudson for the Hawks first, he kicks the goal and I think he might have kicked this one, he has. Jarman McDermott and De Lee up towards the centre of the ground, Darren Jarman for Hawthorne back towards the 50, Gower's outnumbered, McDermott a good mark, got a push out. Gower's a long way out, Paul leads to the pocket and it hits him right on the chest. Good, great kick. Hawthorne 2-3 Adelaide 3-3. So David Pittman chips up wide, they're getting a lot of loose players Adelaide, this is Mark Bickley in towards half forward, Nigel Smart, it's kept down, taken by Darren Jarman, smothered off the boot. Greg Deer a chance, can't control the ball, Anderson is there, now Jarman, well played by Darren Jarman. Gets it to Baxter, on the well on, now where's Dunstan, there he is, bam, hits him right on the chest. Players playing wide of each other in the middle, Dunstan kicks and puts it right through the middle, scores a level. Paul Cooper to half forward, Lawrence underneath it, tapped away to Bickley, taken away by Tasca, on to Tragenza, Tragenza and Jarman, Jarman's got him, and out by set too high, now the advantage played, Tony McGinnis sprints clear, brings it back in front of goal, Modra and Langford, and Modra has marked it. Adi Modra from the forward pocket, this would be a real team lifter early in this second term as he kicks, he's hooked it, did it swing back, yes a goal, Tony Modra. Crows by a goal, 50-50 in the middle, Bickley couldn't get his hand past clear, Allen couldn't get his kick clear, but McGinnis can, Condon did alright, kick forward, Anderson a chance here for the Crows, unmarked out wide is Bone, he goes to Bone who was 20 metres in the clear, kicked the goal with his first kick in the AFL, and that's a beautiful kick. Crows lead by those two goals. So the set abouts again, Deer wins it, Lawrence is, they've got to make a move at centre half forward, Hawthorn, I cannot believe it, as the hand pass comes out to Wren, he's caught with the ball, taken by Baxter, he drops it, quick hand pass by Wren, that was out to McDermott, it's up in the air to agains are underneath it, he had to show courage and he did, but hand pass comes across to Anderson, Anderson to half forward, Nigel Smart gets away from Jeky, caught one in the back, Liptack is there, now Smart, and a free kick to Liptack for too high, but getting back to centre forward, they have to make a move, Hawthorn, and I'd say Lawrence off, Gowis to centre forward, and bring Young Crawford on. They're getting nothing out of centre forward as we see Matthew Liptack from 45 metres, a good looking kick, a beautiful kick, it's a goal. Through his hands off to Jeky, Jeky clears McDermott, does he? Gowis punches from behind, and then applies the tackle, it comes back to McDermott, has done well the skipper, centre wing, Collins with courage, but he bobbled the mark, down he goes from Jarman, he's hurt Collins, Andrew Jarman for the Crows, looked at McGuinness, thought there was a better option, and the option is Modra who marks. 20 of trouble here for Andy Collins, back at centre wing. Modra has kicked a couple, take his season tally to 121, that is a way to the right. A half back line, Jason Taylor against Sean Wren, Faginza caught by Jarman, back to Wren, Wren further afield, this is Wigny, Wigny the big league. Now Smart, and Nigel Smart sets out the home, and he's kicked it, great play by Adelaide. Well Hawthorne scoreless in this quarter, and Adelaide have added four goals one, after the scores have been leveled. Flatton, out of the play, Allen, takes it up towards the 50, goes to Hall, good mark. Boy do the Hawks need this. Looks alright, a goal. Comes to the front, oh a terrific hand pass, comes to Weidemann, the hand pass came away from Visper who tried to make up for it. Punch down to Smart, hand pass back, Faginza wide for Modra, and he marks around 35 metres out. Pretty wide out, unmarked is Weidemann. Unmarked is Weidemann, the kick by the Weid, is a goal. And what's the best cooking tip? They only take three minutes in the microwave, some of the others take six. The money's right after Home Improvement tonight on 7. Jamison, the half back line, Wren versus Deer. Deer thumps it down, a strong tackle on McGuinness. Take it away by Jarman. Jarman to half forward. Over the back is Wiedemann, well played by Wiedemann with strength. Got back up support, a lovely hand pass comes out to Bickley. And Mark Bickley wedges in the goal and puts it through. And they lead 60 to 36. It's a handy break over the mighty finals experienced Hawthorne. Nugent hasn't had any finals experience. He goes off the left foot, it bounces up all right for Gowes. He goes for goal and kicks a ripper. Here's Greg Deer. He should be kicking it long, looking for Dunstall. That's a shocking kick by Deer. And a field kicking Hawthorne, Cooper and Deer twice have broken clear and kicked it straight to Adelaide. McDermott, the tasker. Out wide is Wren. Sean Wren chips it to Wiedemann. And Hawthorne might pay for this. Oh, look at this, Liptaq, no one near him for 40 meters. Matthew Liptaq races in the goal and says thank you very much and puts it through. Here's Brown. In the watch, Wiedemann who marks way out there at half forward. Wayne Wiedemann, he'll look for Modra, chips it to the pocket. There's Osirin though who end a terrific quarter of football by Adelaide. And a big surprise at the MCG, the Adelaide Croaks, 10-6-66. Lead the mighty Hawks, Crawford, on to Jenky. Jenky wide to Dunstall, can he get there? Yes he can. Beautiful kick, Jenky. The Hawthorne champ for goal number three, they need it. And he's kicked it. Back in the middle, the Hawks have added 1-1. The Crows haven't added to their half-time score. The Jarmans are on each other now. Darren out of the middle. It goes past Hudson. A chance for Nixon. It sits up well. He took a step too many as bowled over. He regains his footing and kicks the goal. This is a new Hawthorne. They're coming back at the Crows. Deer, taps it down. Taken away by Traginza. In towards half-forward, Jason Taylor and Smart. Thump clear to Liptak. Liptak caught, gets it to... In towards Smart, a beautiful kick by Smart. Good play by the center half-forward and he has found Stuart Wigny or his opponent. Let's have a look at Wigny. Almost directly in front. A vital kick. He's kicked it to the right. Will it come back? Let's have a look at the goal. Up by it's a goal. Now a chance for the Hawks. Condon to Dunstall. This should be a lay-down Mazeer. He can't get back there. Still going. Oh, gets a cruel bounce. Taken away by Jamison. In to Liptak. And Liptak at half-forward, sprints clear. Rings it in towards the full forward. And a great mark. Taken in front. And that is by Wigny. A free kick he's played in there. Stuart Wigny kicks and goals. Here's Condon. Marking at half-forward. Can pass. Oh, Crawford's had a blitzing third quarter. He kicks it wide. Out there is Dunstall and a beautiful kick by Crawford. The Hawks need it. Right on 50. Dunstall kicks and looks good. He's got it. Five goals for the champion. Four forward and the Hawks back in business. Alan Joyce, John Hook coming under the ground. This is going to be a ding-dong last quarter here at the MCG. That little fellow there has lifted the team. So the bounce. Season on the line for Hawthorne and the Adelaide Crows. Centre of the ground, very important. Platton gets first blood as he goes forward to the half-forward line. Taken away by Resciuto. In towards half-forward, Cooper back with the flight of the ball. Nigel Smart, read it beautifully. Smart chips it in, looking for Moddery. He hits him right on the chest, and that's just what Adelaide wanted to start the final turn. Tony Moddery's third of the game. It drifts. And he has missed. Oh, that's a vital miss. Back to the 50. Platton still after it, going at a million miles an hour. Hudson. Round on the right. This is close. Oh, what a goal! Succession and goal by Paul Hudson. At the margin, two points. Allen a good mark. Penetrating kick. Dunstall. A straight kick by Jason Dunstall will put the Hawks in front. Hawks down by two points. 47 metres out. They're in front. Punches on. Resciuto there, the youngster in his first season. Oh, well done by Ayers. He just got his hand at that ball. A chance for Hawthorne. Platton gathers. No, he hasn't got it yet. He's 35 metres out. Has time to steady. Has to kick high. Dunstall. It's over the line. It's a score. A behind the platton. Ayers is swapped. And will take a free kick. Advantage played. It comes to Nugent in his first final. But it's offline and a behind. He's going back though. To bring it out to the half-forward line. Dunstall. Free kick. Dunstall pushed right in the middle of the back. He's directly in front. It's a wobbly one. Oh, it hits a post. This game's got everything. Seven points the margin favourite of Hawthorne. Being the game, we're talking about the 1993 elimination final. Unfortunately, you weren't playing. Why not? Well, it was about two weeks before we actually played Hawthorne. At Waverley. And I did a hamstring in about the second quarter, I think it was. So it was the first time I'd done a hamstring. I never didn't know what it was. I thought it was just a bit of cramp. But I sort of went back and tried to take off again and just couldn't move. So I missed out on the game against Collingwood the week before. Which we won to get into the finals. And then unfortunately didn't come up for the Hawthorne game. But we were sitting in the stands. What were your thoughts on the game? I was just tremendous. I mean, the game itself was just one of the greats, I think. It was just seesawing all day up and down. They were up, then we were up. And the way we came back in the last quarter, I think, we were down a little bit, but sort of came back reasonably well. It was just a tremendous game. And I mean, just good to be a part of it, even though I wasn't out there. But just to be a part of the team that day was magnificent. Now, the winning against Hawthorne, it just seems that the Adelaide Crows and Hawthorne, they've built up this tradition in such a short time. Not sure. I think it's, well, the first game I didn't play again, I was watching, I didn't play in 91. But just sort of watching in the stands, and it's just, there's that intensity about it, I think. You know, sort of first in, when we played them first up, you know, no-one wants to, you don't want to lose against the Crows first up in their first game. And they did happen to lose it. And from there on, I think, it's just been that intensity between the two clubs and for that many close games against them, it's just, I suppose, a little rivalry developed. Now, last year, at least one highlight for you, mark of the year. And Adelaide Crows, heart-staking, unbelievable, by the way. Unbelievable, by the way. I mean, it was fantastic to actually win it. Really not doing a hell of a lot. It was about three or four seconds out of your life. And it was just one of those freaky things that happens in footy. And just having to get a good ride, and, yeah, it just fell in my arms, really. It was open to the public to vote on a telephone line. How many calls did you put in? Oh, quite a few. No, not me. I think my parents did, and a few people I know sort of ringing me as soon as it got announced that I'd won it. You know, you owe me a drive because we voted for you so many times. But none for me. I didn't do any of it myself. Now, that was a highlight, and otherwise a disappointing year. There'd been a change of coach. You must be looking forward to this year. Yeah, can't wait. I mean, we've had probably two to three reasonably bad years last year, probably our worst season ever. And we're now pretty keen, as you say, to change the coach and a bit of change of personnel as well. People come in new to the club, and we're all very keen. You can tell even, we've been going for, well, it's only December. We've been going for eight to ten weeks, and everyone's pretty keen to sort of prove themselves to the coach, I suppose, and to each other, you know, those last three years when we're good enough. And just the enthusiasm down at the footy club at the moment is fantastic, and we can't wait for it to start. MUSIC Many of our elderly will spend a cheerless Christmas with strangers in hospital. Or Liptac, dangerous. Liptac goes long, as long as he can. McGuinness is there. It bounces for a goal! The margin back to two points. The Crows fight back. Two points to the margin. Wren wins it. Tony McGuinness, the season from Trogenta. In the water, forward. Lengford the big fist away. Still the Crows. Wigny. Now Nigel Smart. He's kicked out. Yes! Crows in front. Well, would you have believed this? 88 to 92. And Adelaide lead by four points. Hudson, waiting at the back. Lee takes the ball. Gives it across Trogenta. Another player slips over. That was Darren Jarman. Simon Trogenta sprints clear. Brings it in towards Wigny, who marks 60 metres from goal. Stuart Wigny's got an open goal. He's going to go for the long kick. It's a booming kick. Modra and Lengford. And Lengford punches the group to be a goal. Yes! The Crows might be home. 89 to 102. And look at those happy Crows players. McDermott. Beautiful kick. In the water, full forward. Lengford sets himself. It's a mark to Adelaide. Nigel Smart has marked 20 metres out. Almost directly in front. I think that could be shut the gate to the Hawks. Kicks. And the Crows supporters jump and play. It's through for a goal. 13 seconds left. The Crows by 15 points. And historic win in their first ever final. Liptack to Brown. Will they add another one? Brown spent a lot of the time on the bench. Plenty of pace in the legs. His left footer just doesn't make it. Gowes takes the mark. There's the siren. The Crows with their own bit of history. Have knocked off the mighty Hawks. And in their first attempt at AFL finals, they've advanced to the second semi. Well, what a win. The Crows midfield on fire. And Matty Liptack perhaps gave us just a glimpse of the form we'd seen last season when he won the club champion award. But what if the Hawks had booted a couple of those early in the last quarter? It could have been over. But it still remains Adelaide's finest win. Next week the Crows come back from 26 points down at three-quarter time. The Mod Man boots 10 and takes mark of the year. Mods run! That is the mark of the year. Next week, Adelaide and North Melbourne. I'll see you then. This program proudly brought to you by Foodland.
