truck stop i'm cindy edwards coming up tonight on the late edition having a ball soccer players get ready for the ontario cup flying into the future and brook airport is forced to make some changes and up in smoke the guys gain popularity with women good evening there is a big question mark tonight surrounding the future of the pembroke airport if the facility is going to survive changes need to be made and soon so now the airport commission is looking at new ways of doing business including privatization chros elizabeth davis has more thank you very much the pembroke airport isn't exactly a moneymaker in fact this year it's projecting a one hundred fifty thousand dollar deficit in april it received a four hundred thousand dollar lump sum from the federal government to help offset operational costs once it's spent that's the end of federal funding i would think we probably have enough money to see us through three years but we're looking longer down the road we don't want to just look at three years down the road we want to see this place here in five years ten years twenty years down the road alan rand says that the airport is going to survive changes need to be made and there's a lot at stake especially when you consider companies like k i mcdonald lodele and atomic energy of canada all depend on it so do people like robert levy i think it's great for an old guy like me seventy three years old not to have to drive four and a half five hours by car robert doesn't want to see the airport closed neither does del o'brien the president of pem air if there isn't an airport there isn't a need for an airline this is not a decision that can be delayed because every week that goes by we're wasting and losing a great deal of money that we've vitally need looking at every virtual option that we can in order to keep this thing up and running one of those options is privatization the commission is now accepting bids from those looking to operate maintain and manage the airport pem air is the first and so far the only one to hand in a written proposal a proposal o'brien calls lean and mean one aim at survival and if our proposal is accepted i'm satisfied that the airport can continue to run for many years into the future all proposals must be in by june twenty eight we should know what the future holds for the airport by early september elizabeth davis chrl news women from across canada converged in the capital earlier today in preparation for a convention of the national action committee on the status of women they've done for on the mcmichael reports here's an embrace at the caravan of road where women completed the last leg of a cross candidate the women's march against poverty wound its way through eighty thousand cities over the past month carol uh... today's the journey to the capital and in a rowdy rally women begin to share their on the road experiences many on the caravan living on welfare or in poverty themselves were troubled by what they saw across canada kids like not having a place to stay or anything because of the money and women being beat by their man once we started traveling we started to realize that each and every person that we talked to our men on on on on this march we're all feeling the same thing rock becoming poor where there's a lot of people losing their jobs the women have fifteen demands including a higher minimum wage and more social housing organizers hope their united front will make politicians sit up and listen we have a prime minister who was elected on the promise of job creation and protecting social programs and national child care program this is women telling him now is the time to deliver on those promises tomorrow the long march across canada will culminate in a parliament hill rally where hundreds of women are expected to gather in a final call for action ron de mcmichael bbs news Ottawa legislation was introduced in the house of commons today on a highly controversial subject the regulation of reproductive technology david reports the proposed law bans pregnancy for profit outlawing various aspects of surrogate motherhood along with eight other so called reproductive technologies don't mean we're moving from commercialization to a voluntary approach the buying and selling of human eggs embryos and sperm will be prohibited and no more rent-a-womb ads from brokers it will become a criminal offense to arrange for a surrogate mother and violators will be subject to heavy fines even jail terms what it does is that the process of donation for donation shall not be a practical item the federal government adopted many of the recommendations made by the nineteen ninety three royal commission on reproductive technologies but there are exceptions the commission suggested men should be reimbursed as much as seventy five dollars for sperm donations but the government said no the sale of sperm will be phased out forcing many private clinics to close if we cannot purchase it then we for the present time will not be able to treat the forty couples a month that come here for donor insemination at least two hundred fifty thousand young couples in canada are unable to conceive a child lee and doug boyd relied on in vitro fertilization and it worked i just couldn't believe it was true i mean it just was too good to be true the current moratorium on many of these new technologies will remain in effect until the proposed legislation becomes law federal officials say that should happen sometime this fall david cdv news the political career of shila copps will be on the line monday that's when the voters of hamilton east will cast their ballots and pass judgment on her decision to resign over the gst and run for reelection leon corby reports don't forget to get out and vote that's all oh no we won't forget 16 monday thank you shila copps is literally running for her political life never mind that she's owned this seat since 1984 and won the last election by more than seventeen thousand votes copps is taking nothing for granted i'm running for this seat i'm running hard for this seat i think we run an excellent campaign and i'm focusing on monday getting the vote out this all started when copps promised during the last election that she'd quit if the liberals didn't scrap the gst when it became clear the gst was staying the pressure mounted on her to quit the former deputy prime minister did that she hopes this by-election ends that chapter in the parliamentary process the ultimate decision is the decision of the people in a particular riding and when you have a by-election i think the people of canada just like the uh... candidates in this election have to respect the wishes of the voters there are many issues in this multicultural working-class area of hamilton but most will tell you this by-election is about one thing when it comes right down to it it's going to be about what hamilton is about shila a new democrat candidate wayne marston is hoping hamilton east thinks it's time for a change and he predicts the perennial runner-up here the ndp is about to benefit with the race sweep as a canvasser out there about six to eight days before we knew we had a tiger by the tail but that happened more than a week ago here this is a very crowded by-election with over twelve candidates vying for the job and they have company some interest groups from outside the riding have spent money on very direct anti-shila campaigns prompting some of cop's supporters to fight back they took out a full page ad in the local newspaper essentially telling the group to but out of hamilton east business indeed some of the candidates have gotten into the billboard blitz with not so subtle reminders about what caused this vote and in another example of full contact politics deborah gray the reform party's deputy leader and local candidate andy sweat barged into cop's campaign headquarters on thursday to make a point about mp's pension either this is what the uh... voters in hamilton east that i've talked to on the doorstep are wanting to do with shila's pension reform finished second here last time gst is still there so many residents find it farcical that uh... she was running in while the gst is still in place she's not going to get a seventeen thousand vote majority that's the window it may be tight it may be not so tight but i think there is a sense that she's got to work for our trust again you know she blew it once she's got to work before we can trust her again leon are killed or injured at railway crossings often due to careless drivers and pedestrians engineers are helpless witnesses today via rail show journalists in the ottawa region and engineers perspective of the dangers on the railway baton's anna kareena tabania reports randy allen is a train engineer has been for twenty one years this is the pretty part of his job there's also one ugly side i've been in four accidents children playing near tracks gasoline trucks in front of us school bus in front of us all near misses he sees cyclists use the tracks as trails pedestrians and drivers defy stoplights they're very helpless don't realize the speed and the weight that's behind the force on a locomotive last year one hundred and twenty people were killed and just as many were injured in railway accidents this stretch of track between montreal and ottawa is known as idiot alley drivers often speed right through the light allen sees about four near misses here every day that's where all the miss-haps and all the false calls generally happen it's between castle and ottawa so when you have a flashing red light and and bells ringing and a horn blowing at you seems pretty obvious you should be stopping you have to stop they don't stop they'll look one way and then just run it it's too far away police agree poor driving habits are the root of many railroad accidents and they're ready to crack down a fine of a hundred and five dollars along with the demerit points you'd lose three demerit points if you're convicted of uh... disobeying a railway crossing signal that's just one penalty randy allen has seen much more serious consequences anna karen at taverniard bbs news ottawa for the second time in two weeks the city of pembroke is hosting a major provincial soccer since the turn of the century but it's the first time a pembroke team has been involved ontario cup covers eighteen divisions and involves over four hundred and seventy teams from across the province this weekend in pembroke it's the under fifteen tier two division five teams including the pembroke juanus pantons will be trying to advance to the eventual semi-finals later this summer i think we have a very competitive team i think that will do very well uh... pembroke soccer club offers excellent training and all the way up most of the kids that are on the team have been on select teams for a number of years a lot of them have been playing soccer since they were five years old there are four sites for this tier two division across the province pembroke burlington thornhill and cambridge each team will play four games in the weekend and pembroke the pantons will be up against teams from nepean scarborough acton and north bay players expect the competition to be pretty tough in our division we have like scarborough other hard teams from around toronto around there and it should be a hard time but i think we have a team to win it's going to be real tough we could do well if we play together probably i like playing against other teams from other cities i don't like playing teams from around this valley we play them a lot the pembroke team also features three girls which is probably pretty unique for this tournament the ontario cap opens at riverside park saturday morning the pembroke panthers play their first game at eleven o'clock against nepean c h r o t v wants to maltreatment at the elgin middle sex detention center in london judy finley says the young offenders who rioted at the blue water youth center in february should not have been taken to the adult facility we had forty youth who were who were viewed as riotous dangerous young offenders entering an adult facility and they were being managed uh... according to the to the management staff in a way that that they would manage dangerous adults and i believe that's what's happened that's what happened finley says for the most part young offenders are immature and suffer from behavioral problems so they can't be treated like adults the child advocate says young offenders need a lot more attention in elgin middle sex or any other part of the province where youth are being managed in in the adult sections of adult facilities uh... their management is is not consistent with the philosophy and principles of the young offenders act yesterday outside the legislature solicitor general bob runsman said there's not much he can do when youth institutions are full that's certainly a difficult one to grapple with but i don't think as a government we can have a stand by youth the facility to deal everywhere and even women are getting involved in an activity some consider quite elegant brian brit reports from montreal if you're a cigar smoker there's nothing like a cuban and made cigars they can cost up to sixty dollars each what people are buying field so the last few years ago susan hilton brand runs the h pupar smoke shop on saint catharine street west and on till saturday she has a visitor all the way from havana orlando ortega rolling cigars for forty two years we're doing this in conjunction with the cuban government in order to uh... show consumers the difference between the hands and the machine-made cigar it starts with the leaf there's something about the cuban soil and the climate the tobacco was aged up to two years and then craftsmen like orlando ortega go to work with the help of interpreter julia blanco we spoke with orlando much training is involved when the people in the city of the internet and the people who are and the world all day here and i hope you can making a real for the past forty two years orlando ortega has hand-rolled between one hundred and one hundred and twenty cigars a day he works at the part of gas factory in havana turning out such brand name cigars as monty christophe and romeo and julietta for this cigar three different types of tobacco were used and then the wrapper is applied lovingly the most important thing is to have love for the job for the craft orlando told us he is a cigar smoker himself wanted to know his favorite for him it's not a name for it, he makes it himself he prepares himself so he gets light depending on what he feels like he goes in that's right yes that's right until saturday at pupars orlando ortega will roll one to your taste as far as the price is concerned remember it's cuban tobacco and it's hand-rolled by a man with forty two years experience brian redfalst news finally tonight doctors say kids with sleeping disorders can grow up to be adults with sleeping disorders but there is something you can do to help dr michael breen has more the music is mellow the lights are dim it's nap time at this child care center one after another every child falls asleep except for two-year-old jeremy his provider says he's a hard cookie he is usually one of the last to go to sleep and normally he likes to just drift off the sleep by himself now at some point almost all children have problems sleeping or afraid of the dark but a new study suggests that's a consistent problem for your child it could pave the way for a lifetime of sleep disorders in this study children with nightmares or trouble falling asleep were twice as likely to later become adults with the same problem so how can parents correct a sleep problem early? well ironically sleep studies on children show the most common cause of insomnia is that children are too tired when they go to sleep a nine-month-old needs two two-hour naps every day at two years old that declines to one nap a day but many children still need that daily nap till they're four years old without that much sleep children are overtired and therefore agitated at night the main goal is to avoid the overtired state to try to set up limits so that the child is put to bed day and night before the child gets overtired if you can do that your child can consistently get a good night's sleep even Jeremy I'm Dr. Michael Breen
