You Space the final frontier These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise Its continuing mission to explore strange new worlds To seek out new life and new civilizations To boldly go where no one has gone before Friday, strap yourself in for the most fantastic voyage possible with Dennis Quay How the hell can I be inside a van? I studied at Morton Rabbit Martinshore I'm possessed Meg Ryan Let go of that man Inner Space, 8.30, Friday, on 9 Gillette introduces Sensor, a new system A new technology that will change the way you shave forever Sensor twin blades are individually mounted on remarkably responsive springs They continually sense and automatically adjust to the individual curves of your face No other razor comes close Gillette Sensor, for the closest, smoothest, safest shave a man can get Michael, how you going? Not bad Good to see you back on your feet again How's the vet business? Can't keep a good man down But I wasn't too fit Huh? Eight months out of action Eight months? Sure, it makes you appreciate your health it does Must have been a bit of a blow financially, I mean for the family No, I had plenty to worry about without worrying about money What do you mean? Well when I set up practice, you know, one man band Yeah? My national mutual agent reckoned I ought to take out income protection Good move? Yeah, sure Takes care of my family in case I get sick or injured and keeps the practice going Tax deductible too Vets life can get pretty rough out here You're not wrong, anyway that was the best advice I ever had Combat day 43625.2 While investigating an unusual radiation anomaly The Enterprise has encountered what could almost be called a ghost from its own past The Enterprise C, the immediate predecessor to this battleship Sensors confirmed design and specifications captain Analysis of hull and engine materials Conformed to engineering patterns and methods of that time period But that cruiser was destroyed with all hands over 20 years ago Presumed destroyed The Enterprise C was last seen near the Klingon outpost in a render of 3 Exactly 22 years, 3 months and 4 days ago And now they're here Has it been adrift for all those years or has it traveled through time? It is a possibility captain If that hypothesis is correct The phenomenon we have just encountered would be a temporal rift in space A rift? Possibly the formation of a curl loop from super string material It would require high energy interaction in the vicinity for such a structure to be formed The rift is certainly not stable captain It could collapse at any time Captain, I'm able to scan the interior of the ship Nasser Heavy damage to warp field nacelles and hull bearing struts Internal space frame Life signs captain Readings are sporadic It looks like they have massive casualties but some are still alive Bridge to sick bay, emergency teams Stand by transporter rooms Understood Be lay that order doctor Respectfully If I may suggest regardless of where they came from they are here now and they need our help Commander if that ship has traveled into the future we could be dealing with variables that will alter the flow of our history Enterprise C is sending out a distress call sir, audio only Uh huh This is captain Garrett of the starship Enterprise To any Federation ship We have been attacked by Romulan warships and require immediate assistance We've lost warp drive, life support is failing There's no record of the Romulans ever assaulting the Enterprise C Voice message has ended captain, I'm only receiving their automated distress signal now Open a hailing frequency This is captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation of uh Federation Starship Stand by to receive emergency teams Commander we will handle this one step at a time Stabilize their power systems, attend to their injured and avoid all discussions of where and when they are Aye sir, lieutenant Captain, message coming in from Starfleet monitor stations Klingon battlecruisers headed toward this sector Battle alert Mr. Crusher, condition yellow Aye sir Captain Garrett? Yes I'm commander William Riker, our emergency teams are on board your ship Doctor? The rest of the bridge crew is dead She has a bad fracture and serious internal injuries I'm gonna have to get her back to the Enterprise To where? We'll explain that later You'll explain now commander We're from the Federation starship, we handle the situation Your ship is in good hand but we need to get you to our sick bay Very well Crusher to transporter room, two to beam directly to sick bay Stand by for transport It's pretty bad commander, looks like they were in a hell of a fight If you can't stabilize the life support we're going to have to evacuate the ship I think I can do it, I'll have to get to engineering though The force to damage control team alpha, meet me on engineering level three Commander Thanks Commander William Riker Lieutenant Castillo, helmsman Await team reporting in captain On screen Go ahead commander We've stabilized life support, Mr LaForge is working on restoring the main power coupling but that'll take time It's a real mess down here sir Survivors? 125 Recommendations? I'd hate to have to scrap her, Starfleet could certainly use another ship even if she is old Agreed but we can't stay in this area too long You have nine hours, if you can get her underway by then we'll escort her to starbase 105 If not, we'll evacuate the survivors and destroy the ship Understood sir Keep me posted, the guard out I need to talk, somehow this, this is all wrong, this is not the way it's supposed to be You must have some idea how things have changed I look at things, I look at people and they just don't feel right What things, what people? You, your uniform, the bridge What's the matter with the bridge? It's not right It's the same bridge, nothing has changed I know that, I also know it's wrong What else? Families, there should be children on this ship What? Children on the Enterprise? Gynet, we're at war No, we're not, at least we're not supposed to be This is not a ship of war, this is a ship of peace What you're suggesting? I'm not suggesting, that ship from the past is not supposed to be here, it's got to go back Run a full electrolyte report Boost the level of trichordies Try to relax Dr. Szilard, report to Nalgi ward stat Dr. Szilard, report to Nalgi ward stat I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard I'm Captain Garrett, how's my ship? The support systems are being restored, continuing repairs Where did you come from? We weren't picking up any other Federation ships in this sector What's the last thing you remember? We were answering the distress signal Distress signal? I've heard it, from the Klingon outpost, Arindra 3 But you didn't, did you? This sickbay, I've never seen anything like it, even on the starbase, and your uniforms What ship is this, Captain? Please try to be still I must insist, what ship? You're aboard the Enterprise, Captain, 1701 D You have come 22 years into the future 22 years? Does my crew know yet? No I must tell them, I owe them that If you wish, I can see that they're informed Is there some reason they should not be told? I am concerned that if you return to your own time with knowledge of the future... Return to the battle? We barely escaped with our lives If we returned, we'd be destroyed Any idea how this happened? There was a fierce volley of photon torpedoes we were hit A bright light, and then here It is possible that this exchange of fire was the catalyst for the formation of a temporal rift History has no record of your battle with the Romulans We were responding to a distress call from the Klingon outpost on Arindra 3 The Romulans were attacking it, we engaged them But there were four war birds Arindra 3 outpost was destroyed It is regrettable that you did not succeed A Federation starship rescuing a Klingon outpost Might have averted 20 years of war I still can't quite make myself believe it 22 years I'm reading 40% on forward shields, what do you have on aft? 40% That won't cut it Commander, advise Lieutenant LaForge that shields are below minimum Acknowledged We'll never see our homes again, our families How do you know your family's not still alive? You're right, I don't But imagine coming home after 22 years, would I even recognize them? What are the stats on the main phaser banks? Emitters available, 60% forward, 52% aft Good, let's take a look at the torpedo launchers I guess I'm lucky to be alive at all You may not like the future, it's been a long war The Federation has lost more than half of Starfleet to the Klingons We were negotiating a peace treaty when I left A lot of changes, Lieutenant, a lot of changes When we get a break maybe you could fill me in on some of them Photon banks are depleted, auxiliary fusion generators are down There is a high degree of probability that the temporal rift is symmetrical, Captain Then what would happen if the Enterprise C were to fly back through it? Back, sir The Enterprise C would emerge in her own time at almost the same instant she left Right in the middle of the battle with the Romulans Yes, sir Is there any possibility she could survive? None, sir Then sending them back would be a death sentence Remember Lieutenant Barrett She was the first galaxy class warship built by the Federation Lieutenant Barrett Forty-two decks Communications Capable of transporting over 6,000 troops How long have you been on board? Four years Straight out of the Academy I was lucky to get the Enterprise Yeah, me too I mean, my Enterprise Lieutenant, how's the ship? We've restored minimal shields in the Ford Phaser banks Still no, Fogtron launchers or warp drive Concentrate on the weapons system What Captain Picard told me, the Federation can use all the help it can get And soon Our sensors have picked up Klingon warships in the sector, Captain Why wasn't I informed, Mr. Castillo? Captain, you shouldn't As senior officer, I want you to be my liaison to the Enterprise D Coordinate with tactical That's me, Captain Where do you think you're going? I'm resuming my duties, Doctor Captain, you need at least another 24 hours Nonsense Doctors always overprotect their patients And Captains always push themselves too hard Doctor, my ship and my crew need me now 24 hours might as well be 24 years I need more There is no more I wish there were I wish I could prove it But I can't Then I can't ask them to go back You've got to Kynan, they will die moments after they return How can I ask them to sacrifice themselves based solely on your intuition? I don't know But I do know that this is a mistake Every fiber in my being says this is a mistake I can't explain it to myself, so I can't explain it to you I only know that I'm right Who is to say that this history is any less proper than the other? I suppose I am Not good enough, damn it, not good enough! I will not ask them to die 40 billion people have already died This war is not supposed to be happening You've got to send those people back to correct this And what is the guarantee that if they go back they will succeed? Every instinct is telling me this is wrong, it is dangerous, it is futile We've known each other a long time You have never known me to impose myself on anyone Or take a stance based on trivial or whimsical perceptions This timeline must not be allowed to continue Now I've told you what you must do You have only your trust in me to help you decide to do it Deflector shield technology has advanced considerably during the war Our heat dissipation rates are probably double those of the Enterprise-C We can hang in a firefight for a lot longer Gynan? Have you ordered yet, Tasha? No, not yet Is anything wrong? Not a thing Can I get free? Just a couple of TKLs, I'm in a hurry Oh, this is Lieutenant Castillo First time for everything First time? It's just that I've never seen anything bother her before What's a TKL? Standard rations, food replicators are on minimum power So everything else is diverted to the defensive systems So where was I? You've told me more about tactical in an hour than I learned in my last year at the Academy You're gonna need it, Lieutenant Hey, I've known you a whole day now, Lieutenant I won't salute if you won't What did she call you? Tasha? Yeah Most everyone calls me Castillo, my mother calls me Richard Okay, Castillo No, I think maybe I'd like it better if you called me Richard Richard This is the Captain, senior officers will report to my ready room immediately Thank you so much for lunch Captain, are you suggesting that we let them return and attempt to complete their mission? I am, Doctor Based on Guinan's intuition? I don't accomplish anything, sir, there's no way they can save Narendra 3 Captain Garrett said there were four Romulam warbirds The Enterprise C would be outmanned and outgunned Unless we would rearm them with modern... We can't do that, if we send that ship back with new technology we'll be altering the past But that's what you're talking about anyway, isn't it, altering the past? We're talking about restoring the past But how could Guinan know that history's been altered if she's been altered along with the rest of us? Perhaps her species has a perception that goes beyond linear time There are many things about her species we can't easily explain Yet it is very possible that she is correct A ship from the past has travelled through time How can we know what effect those events will have on the present? Indeed, we shall never know for certain if Guinan is correct But I have decided the consequences of that possibility are too grave to ignore Dismissed Sir, if you'd like my opinion... I think I'm aware of your opinion, Commander This is a briefing, I'm not seeking your consent With all due respect, sir, you'd be asking 125 people to die a meaningless death Not necessarily meaningless, Commander The Klingons regard honor above all else If the crew of the Enterprise-C had died fighting for the survival of a Klingon outpost It would be considered a meaningful act of honor by the Klingon Empire Even their deaths could have prevented this war If the Enterprise-C returns to the battle and its mission is a success History will be irrevocably changed This timeline will cease to exist And a new future will have been created I've considered the alternatives I'll go with Guinan's recommendation Dismissed If she's right, we may not even be in an alternate timeline Who knows if we're even dead or alive? Engineering Is Engineering your destination as well? What? Oh, Deck Six. Sorry If I interpret your facial expressions correctly I'll be able to see your face I'll be able to see your face I'll be able to see your face If I interpret your facial expressions correctly You are preoccupied with something unpleasant No, I was just thinking About a lot of things I've been working with one of the officers on the Enterprise-C He's nice. I like him I'm worried about what's going to happen to him We may never know what happens If they succeed, we will not even realize that these events occurred Shields are up to 72% That's better Good Do you believe this, Guinan? I discovered long ago that she has a special wisdom I've learned to trust it I'll arrange for you to speak with her if you wish Captain, I would be lying to you if I told you there was a chance in hell of coming out of this alive Why doesn't your ship come back with us? The Romulans would be no match for your weaponry I can't do that No, I suppose not You don't belong in our time any more than we belong in yours To be honest with you, Picard A significant number of my crew members have expressed a desire to return even knowing the odds Some because they can't bear to live without their loved ones Some because they don't like the idea of slipping out in the middle of a fight But I have told them that in the here and now, the Federation needs another ship against the Klingons And we'd better get used to being in the here and now But if you go back, it could be a great deal more helpful The war is going very badly for the Federation, far worse than is generally known Starfleet Command believes that defeat is inevitable Within six months, we may have no choice but to surrender And you're saying that all this may be a result of our rivalry? One more ship will make no difference in the here and now But 22 years ago, one ship could have stopped this war before it started Mr. Castillo Yes, Captain Inform the crew we're going back Yes, Captain The Romulans will get a good fight We'll make it one for the history books I know you will, Captain Lieutenant Yaw Permission to remain a moment, sir Granted Transporter room, Captain Picard is ready to return to his ship Aye, Captain I just wanted to say good luck I'll try to put some of your tactical briefing to good use when we get back Your ship has much more maneuverability than the Romulan counterparts of that era Actually, if you could just isolate... You'll do fine If you get back to Earth and you see a man Say, in his late 50s, taking a hard, long look across a crowded room Hey, you never know Goodbye, Lieutenant Red alert, full power to shields, shields are up, function Initiating evasive maneuvers, gamma sequence Ready phasers, Enterprise D has your Captain return safely Acknowledged, Captain Picard is safely aboard Fire phasers Firing phasers Report One Klingon bird of prey off the starboard bow Firing phasers Load torpedo base The Klingon vessel is recloaked, sir, I have no readings Captain Garrett, damage report Captain Garrett This is Lieutenant Yar, sir Captain Garrett is dead Tonight at 6, the tanks rolled in to try to break the deadlock in Texas I'm prepared to lead the Enterprise back myself, Captain Picard Sir, Lieutenant Castillo is the last surviving senior officer He will have limited support from ops, no tactical, reduced staff and engineering I have good people willing to do their best Certainly, history never meant for this ship to go into battle without her, Captain I can't speak to that point, sir, but I can get us back to where we're supposed to be I believe that's what Captain Garrett would want me to do Commander data to Captain Picard Go ahead Sir, sensors are showing additional instability in the time rift Possibly the result of the battle with the Klingons Any signs of other Klingon vessels? No, sir Our coordinates have been transmitted to the Klingon command, sir We mustn't remain here Sir, it is my intention to return, unless you order me not to How soon can your ship be ready? We sustain moderate damage in the attack I think we can get underway in a few hours Make it so, we'll give you cover Meeting of Darsis Darnett in the area on the double One to beam to the Enterprise sea We keep saying goodbye, don't we? I wish we had more time More time? I think we have all the time we can handle, as it is Lieutenant Can I get you something, Tasha? Guinan, I have to know something What happens to me in the other timeline? I don't have alternate biographies of the crew As I said to the Captain, it's just a feeling But there's something more when you look at me, isn't there? I can see it in your eyes, Guinan We've known each other too long We weren't meant to know each other at all At least that's what I sense when I look at you Tasha, you're not supposed to be here Where am I supposed to be? Dead Do you know how? No, but I do know it was an empty death A death without purpose Come Yes, Lieutenant Captain, I request a transfer to the Enterprise C For what reason? They need someone at Tactical We need you here I'm not supposed to be here, sir Sit down, Lieutenant What did she say to you? I don't belong here, sir I'm supposed to be dead She felt it necessary to reveal that to you I felt it was necessary I see You realize that it is very possible the Enterprise C will fail We will continue in this timeline In which case, your life, hopefully, will continue for a long while I know that I know that they don't fail, Captain That's why I'm requesting this transfer You don't belong on that ship, Lieutenant No, Captain Garrett belongs on that ship But she's dead And I think there's a certain logic in this request There's no logic in this at all Whether they succeed or not Enterprise C will fail Enterprise C will be destroyed But Captain, at least with someone at Tactical they will have a chance to defend themselves well It may be a matter of seconds or minutes but those could be the minutes that change history Guinan says I died a senseless death in the other timeline I didn't like the sound of that, Captain I've always known the risks that come with a Starfleet uniform If I'm to die in one I'd like my death to count for something Lieutenant Permission granted Thank you, sir Thank you, sir I'm showing phase of banks up to 70% efficiency We've got an hour left Let's see if we can get them up to 90 Aye, sir Parker, you've got ops And Fredericks, take the con I'll handle Tactical Lieutenant Tasha Yar reporting for duty, sir You're not part of my crew I am now Captain Picard approved my request for transfer This isn't a joke, Tasha We're going back into the rift Into battle when not coming back I know the mission These are my orders, Lieutenant But I don't want you here You need me here Show me someone in your crew who can do the job better than I can Welcome aboard Take your station, Lieutenant Aye, sir Get into save of the century You'll love it, it's great fun Still the one It's working, don't worry about that I have bring you all the fun All together And you're still the one On Channel 9 From the most outspoken director of his generation Comes America's most controversial motion picture epic Malcolm X Say, Roseland Roseland A pusher who became a savior So I have to stand here today as what I was when I was born A black man A hustler who challenged white rule And a racial explosion is more dangerous than an atomic explosion A thief who grasped greatness That's too much power for one man to have A man too powerful to rule When you have a powder keg and there's too many sparks around it, the thing's going to explode From the author of Roots comes the incredible true story Brother, we don't want black people killing each other Academy Award winner Denzel Washington's most electrifying performance This isn't black supremacy, this is black intelligence And director Spike Lee's most powerful film It's a time for martyrs now Malcolm X By any means necessary Premieres Thursday at a cinema near you The beautiful song by Elton John Just one of the greatest love songs ever recorded on this new release The very best of that loving feeling Daniel's classic and Boris Gardner's 30 unforgettable love songs Roberta Flack and Peebo Bryson This is a very special collection Now you can have the very best of that loving feeling on two great CDs only from Concept Brash's are the video specialists with the biggest range of the best brands Panasonic, Philips, Sanyo, JBC, Sony, Mitsubishi, Akai, Sharp All the latest models, all the latest features like hi-fi stereo, slow motion and 10 hour recording Brash's friendly expert staff will help you choose the one that's right for you And right now Brash's have an unbeatable offer on the latest Mitsubishi 3-head remote video Just $545 including a bonus 3-pack of 3-hour Mitsubishi videotapes That's extraordinary value Get one while stocks last, where? We stopped serving breakfast at 11.30 Michael Douglas, Robert Duvall and Barbara Hershey star in Falling Down, the story of an everyday man with a very short fuse The things he's confronted with are things that we're all confronted with Why would I want to kill you? Samuel L. Jackson and Nicholas Cage star in Amos and Andrew, it's a dramatic comedy about racial tensions And it became a source of concern for the actors I was nervous I'm ready Let's do it And Body Shot stars Robert Patrick, the shape changing Terminator who became an overnight sensation Unknown actor and all of a sudden you're the new Terminator Music From Hollywood and locations around the globe, this is World Entertainment Report Music These days when it comes to production costs for most Hollywood pictures, the bottom line often reads into the millions of dollars But don't tell that to newcomer Robert Rodriguez because his first film effort only cost $7,000 Hi everyone, I'm Mike Jarrett And I'm Wendy Walsh, welcome to World Entertainment Report Rodriguez may not have had a million dollar budget when it came to making El Mariachi But the 24 year old up and coming filmmaker, actually he was 23 when he made the film Will tell us why the film has turned out to be worth its weight in gold Great story, and later in our show we'll talk to veteran singer Tony Bennett about the inspiration behind his latest LP Perfectly Frank But first, in 1991 actor comedian Steve Martin took a humorous look at the quirky characters who live in the city of Los Angeles In his film LA Story But without his sense of humor, chances are Martin's character would have ended up losing his cool Which is exactly what happens to Michael Douglas who demonstrates why laughter isn't always the best medicine in the new movie Falling Down Music Michael Douglas is having a bad day Hey, where do you think you're going? Going home If everybody will stay out of my way, then nobody will get hurt Give me some money, give us your briefcase Give it to me, give it to me, give it to me In the new action thriller Falling Down, Academy Award winner Michael Douglas portrays a shattered everyman unable to cope with the stress of urban society Douglas' character dubbed Defends after his vanity license plate abandons his car on the hottest day of the year in Los Angeles and embarks on a violent journey into madness I think it's ironic that in the early 1990s now Southern California or California is holding down our economic growth And a lot of it was a guy like Defense who worked in a defense contracting plant, you know, defending America Worked hard, was proud of his work And you know what? He did a good job The Cold War is over and he's out of work I'd like some breakfast We stopped serving breakfast at 1130 Have you ever heard the expression, the customer is always right? Yeah, well hey, I'm really sorry Yeah, well hey, I'm really sorry too No, no, it's an accident, it's an accident Falling Down, which was inspired by a newspaper article about a frenzied truck driver who began ramming cars on a freeway, co-stars Barbara Hershey, Robert Duvall, and was directed by Joel Schumacher Although Michael's behavior is outrageous and many times immoral, I think people have an understanding of why he's doing it I rolled back prices to 1965, what do you think of that? Donuts, package of six, how much? Dollar twelve, too much In the course of his destructive trek through LA, he tries to win back his ex-wife, played by Barbara Hershey, and his young daughter You've got to stop calling me It's Adele's birthday Yes, I know it's her birthday, what do you want? I'm coming home I think the things he's confronted with are things that we're all confronted with in one way or another, hopefully more subtle circumstances, but I recognized all the circumstances from my life I think there's a lot of people out there, both in urban situations and outside, who are in factories or jobs, who have been doing a job for a long time and find themselves out of work, not from their own failures, but from something else, and they're confused and they're angry, and I think he reflects that Douglas says it wasn't until he arrived on the set that he was able to nail down the essence of his character I got right there the day and I was still struggling around, the wardrobe worked out, and this wonderful hair person, I said, well I kind of think like this, and she said, let me try something And I said, yeah, that's it, that's it, that sort of represents that ex-military, kind of debauched, slightly debauched look and feeling Douglas found his acquired anonymity an asset during the production Sometimes when I was walking around in that wardrobe, I wasn't getting recognized too often We were able a lot of times to steal shots or scenes of me walking in and out of Los Angeles or waiting at bus stations without having to stage them because no one really was aware that it was me The film was shot in the spring of 1992, coinciding with the Los Angeles riots that erupted after the Rodney King verdict Although our film didn't deal as a racial issue, the economics of the situation were there And the anger that we had in falling down, you certainly saw the reality was going on in the streets I did a picture many years ago called The China Syndrome, and it was about nuclear power and right after the movie opened, about two and a half, three weeks after the movie opened, we had three mile island accidents And there was a strange sense in falling down of being downtown on the streets, actually a couple days before, and we were waiting for this Rodney King verdict And with the police that we had working with us, we knew it was going to be a hot issue And then when it broke, it was, yeah, you felt like your picture was preordained And while the picture is set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, director Schumacher believes the seeds of the story are universal Yes, I certainly think it could happen in Manhattan or Chicago or, you know, Detroit This kind of reality that the movie taps into can happen anywhere at any time One soda, 12 ounces, 50 cent So So he kind of reminded me of you on a bad day What do you mean? Well, when you get really stressed and start throwing stuff around I don't get stressed I'm joking, he's not, he always makes a joke out of things I don't You make a joke Actually, I like his haircut though, I need a haircut, what about that do for me? I don't think it would work Really? I think it would make your cheeks look bigger That's virtually impossible, you know, we shoot with a wide angle lens for that very reason No way Although the hairstyle actor Kevin Costner sported in the bodyguard, remember that one? Oh, horrible Sent a number of young trendsetters to the barber asking for the Costner cut Chances are the Douglas do is not going to be a hot hair item A hot hair item? I don't know, I like his better than Costner's actually Well, now Los Angeles isn't the only place that heats up in the summertime All the way across the United States in a small New England resort town, actors Nicholas Cage and Samuel L. Jackson found themselves in another hot spot along with Dabney Coleman, Michael Lerner and Giancarlo Esposito in the new comedy Amos and Andrew You tried to kill me Why would I want to kill you? Because I'm a thorn in the side of the white man I'm the voice of my people, a loud angry voice that's not afraid to speak the truth about white America What's your name? Andrew Sterling Nicholas Cage and Samuel L. Jackson star in the new comedy film Amos and Andrew where Jackson plays successful black writer Andrew Sterling who after settling into his new home, finds himself surrounded by police who along with his new neighbors suspect him of being a burglar, simply because he's black Saw someone in the house? What was he doing? Well, believe me Chief Tolliver, I'm no racist, I can assure you of that but when you see a black man on this island with his arms full of stereo equipment you know damn good and well what he's doing Freeze! After the local police realize they've made a prejudice mistaken identity they attempt to cover it up by making a deal with career criminal Amos O'Dell, played by Cage Yes sir, I go in, take the guy hostage, get myself up and I'm on the first bus out of town Ain't that the deal boss? That's the deal Cage says that at first he questioned whether this film with a plot built on prejudice could or should make people laugh I was nervous, really because I, at the same time I was intrigued but I hadn't really seen a movie like this before or read a script like this before I have a shotgun, you have a frying pan And dealing with a very very serious topic issue of today which is racism putting it in a mainstream comedic format and how was I going to say the lines in a way that people didn't think I was you know, crossing the line, making fun of a very serious topic Mr. Sterling, apart from being a thorn to the side of the white man, you got a regular job? Maybe you've heard of the Pulitzer Prize You won that? I did How much you win? The police plan backfires as the phase saving charade turns into the real thing a hostage crisis that catches the attention of the national media and escalates on account of it As writer-director E. Max Fry explains, he took special care in bringing such a story to the screen in the form of a comedy There's a fine line, you gotta walk or you're gonna get skewered, you're gonna get slammed or people are gonna say it's racist and I'm racist and you know, my outlook is racist I ain't holding you hostage anymore, okay, but you gotta know we're in this together now, right? You and me, Amos and Andrew, let's go Don't say that Fry says the premise of Amos and Andrew came from a slice of American life It came from America, from the incidents that go on every day there that are on the 6 o'clock news and the 11 o'clock news and you pick up the newspaper and you see so and so has been mistaken for a criminal and escaping in a stolen Mercedes There's no burglar, there's no hostage and there's no crime being committed There are good cops and bad cops and you know, good people, white or black and bad people, white or black and it depends on the situation and a simple incident like this can snowball into a tragedy Co-star Jackson says he had no qualms about making a comedy based on racism One reason was that he feels his character is as guilty of prejudice as the rest You're allergic to dogs and you have hay fever Yes, I'm allergic to dogs and I have hay fever That's too bad Anyway, to him I'm probably just another nigger Dogs are colorblind I saw him as this egomaniac who did things and kind of used his ethnicity to run rampant and dare people to bother him because of it and because he was this brilliant kind of guy that he was allowed to get away with a lot of things Ironically, the film was in production when the Los Angeles riots broke out last year A fact that had a tremendous effect on the cast and crew It was a combination of feelings, you know, I felt embarrassed about it and I felt ashamed about it I'm from LA, that's my home and that whole episode put everyone back 30 years, I thought I know what you thought It was an honest mistake It was supposed to be different It was supposed to be the kind of place where you don't lock your doors at night Where you don't count your change at the grocery store Where a man in his own home doesn't have to worry about being shot at and nearly killed by the local police simply because he's black I had those feelings as well as also feeling like, you know, maybe now more than ever this picture really is relevant But we carried on with our job Because we were there doing something, a whole ethnic mix of people doing something very positive So we knew that if we could do that, then somehow, somewhere, that positive feeling that we were putting together for this film would have to show somehow Or be heard or be felt when people saw this film My father made it in the white man's world, he wanted his son to make it in the white man's world too But don't you for one second think that I've forgotten who I am or where I come from While Cage and Jackson did battle against the bad guys on screen, off screen Amos and Andrew's production crew were busy fighting a cast of creepy Critters that turned up on location in Wilmington, North Carolina Shooting mostly nights, the crew often encountered tree frogs, mosquitoes and other unwelcome extras to the movie It reminds me of when I was in South Carolina, not far from Wilmington, we were doing a shoot down there and there were a lot of palmetto bugs Giant, huge, and you know they go crunch when you step on them And one time I was in this nice resort and I was brushing my teeth and one fell from the ceiling right into the sink, scared the heck out of me And there was one in my bed, I didn't sleep the entire night But they don't hurt you, so don't worry they don't hurt you Oh they don't? No, you know if you'd like to see more of Cage or Jackson, the pair have plenty of on screen credit Cage who was most recently seen jumping from a plane in a sequined Elvis suit, remember that one, in Honeymoon in Vegas Has also starred in popular comedies like Raising Arizona and Peggy Sue Got Married Raising Arizona was fabulous, John Goodman was also in that And Jackson, who's currently battling bad people and puns opposite Emilio Estevez in National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 Has also demonstrated his serious side in the films Jungle Fever, Goodfellas, and most recently, Patriot Games The number one team for action and entry We never had this conversation, okay? Don't ask me For adventure Let's touch and go It's the all new RFDS online Topping this week's international news, Unforgiven and Howard Zinn top this year's Oscar nominations with nine each For best picture, the nomination goes to Unforgiven, Howard Zinn, A Few Good Men, Scent of a Woman, and The Crying Game For best actor, the honors went to Clint Eastwood, Robert Downey Jr., Al Pacino, Stephen Ray, and Denzel Washington And for best actress, it's Catherine Deneuve, Mary McDonnell, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Emma Thompson In addition to the top three categories, there were a few surprises like The Crying Game's Jay Davidson for best supporting actor And Marissa Tomei, who was nominated in the best supporting actress category for her performance in the comedy My Cousin Vinny The truth will be told March 29th when the Oscars are broadcast live from Los Angeles Oscars aren't the only thing people are talking about. The nominations for the 1993 Juno Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Grammys, have been announced And Quebec's Céline Dion topped the list for the women with seven nominations including Canadian Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Album of the Year, all of those For the men this year, it's Tom Cochran who garnered four nominations including Canadian Entertainer of the Year and Best Video And the annual Gospel Music Association Dove Awards have also been announced This year's favorites include Amy Grant, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, 4Him, and Michael English Who will compete against a number of other artists for awards in 33 categories In South Africa, American actor John Savage, who has appeared in such films as Do the Right Thing and The Deer Hunter Suffered minor injuries after he was attacked and beaten in the black township of Soweto Savage, who was white, says the attack occurred when he stopped to help some school children caught up in the unrest between striking taxi drivers and police Savage, who didn't know his attackers, says he was finally rescued by several members of the militant Pan-Africanist Congress In Do the Right Thing, Savage plays a white man living in a rough black neighborhood. The movie opened in South Africa last month Country crooner Clint Black and his wife, actress singer Lisa Hartman, are packing it in and heading east to Somalia The couple have announced that they have volunteered to participate in an upcoming USO tour in March and will sing together for the first time The couple, who will entertain the US troops with a series of informal concerts, have already started getting their immunization shots Including tetanus, influenza, typhoid, yellow fever, meningitis, and measles, to name a few And finally, topping off this week's international news, filmmaker Steven Spielberg has agreed not to make his next movie, Schindler's List, inside the Auschwitz death camp memorial in Poland Instead, Spielberg and the World Jewish Congress have reached an agreement that allows the director to build a replica of the concentration camp outside the camp's main gate The movie about Oskar Schindler, a Nazi who rescued 1,300 Jews, is set to begin filming in March At every Hollywood premiere and party, you'll always find two things, celebrities and celebrity photographers While the stars are kicking up their heels, the photographers are clicking off shots in an effort to capture interesting pictures They can then sell to a bevy of magazines and newspapers around the world In fact, just the other day, I was in Aspen and had a paparazzi photographer take my picture with MC Hammer Oh, he's not MC anymore, with Hammer. I'm hoping they'll sell it, we'll see Now, if you think that the life of a celebrity photographer sounds like a good idea for a movie plot, you're not alone But leave it to Hollywood to add a few twists of its own before the film hits the big screen, and then lights, camera and action, it's body shot With a new hairstyle, that's Terminator 2 Judgment Day's Robert Patrick This time, he's starring in a film called Body Shot Currently in production in Los Angeles, Body Shot is the story of paparazzi photographer Mickey Sass Who becomes obsessed with a rocker named Chelsea Savage, played by Michelle Johnson Okay, I'm ready, let's do it Body Shot is Robert Patrick's third film after he was catapulted to fame last summer as T-1000 in Terminator 2 He says the instant celebrity was great, but also a little bewildering And it was neat to be recognized, but literally, I was like in Chicago screen testing for a movie And the film had only been out for like four days, and I had like business guys like yelling, hey, the new Terminator I was like, wow, I mean, it was just like, you know, unknown actor and all of a sudden, you know, you're the new Terminator So it was a great experience I'm not complaining, but there was new things to get used to, like, go buy cat food You really don't want to be recognized, you might not be having a good day, and then all of a sudden, oh man But the T2 fans are the greatest And he says the newfound attention by the media helped him prepare for his role as a paparazzi photographer in Body Shot Unlike many actors who disdain still photographers, Robert Patrick respects celebrity shutter bugs It's kind of a give and take kind of a deal, it's so surreal anyway They take your picture and you get the publicity So I know that for a big star, it could be very, you know, aggravating to have them constantly after you I'm not hounded like that by no means Action In Body Shot, the plot gets interesting when his character meets a woman who is the spitting image of his obsession, Chelsea Savage I am approached by a model and her manager to do some shots And this model happens to be a lookalike And I sort of fall for this model because she looks like the object of my obsession And we sort of start having an affair And I'm, you know, beginning to fall in love with her But in the back of my mind, something's not up here, you know, something's not right here And his hunch is right That model, Danielle, who is also played by Michelle Johnson, turns out to be closer to Chelsea Savage than he thought And her intentions aren't so pure, as a murder plot is revealed I play a woman who sets up this photographer, Mickey, for murder And I try to frame him, but in the midst of all of it, I kind of make the mistake of falling in love with him So it botches up my evil plans Is that the move? I don't want to have to shoot you, buddy But I will Michelle says playing the conspiring model was a lot of fun I enjoy playing bad girls. It's much more fun than playing good girls I don't know, I just have more fun If you shoot me, an innocent man dies Drop, face down When the police get involved, LAPD detective Christine Weiler, who's played by Kim Meori, is assigned to the case One, she's a really strong woman, she's a very positive female character Which, you know, obviously drew me to the character And on top of that, it was a non-specific role In other words, it was not written to be played by an Asian-American actress Her name is Christine Weiler And so I play her as a divorced cop Her husband was Charlie Weiler And the more she learns about the case, the more she questions his guilt Oh, come on, the guy is a photographer, one court order and he goes maniac Marker And if you ask director Dimitri Lagothadis, he will tell you Body Shot is a film noir thriller that won't turn off mainstream audiences You get to escape a little bit, you have a little fun And you've got some characters that are sexy and interesting and also they walk these fine lines of morality You know, when you wake up every morning you want to say, well, you know, I hope today that I can tell the truth about 90% of the time I can make really good decisions about 90% of the time And at the end of the day you sort of look at the tally sheet and you say, did I do that? Cut That's a cut, thank you, we are cut If Michelle Johnson looks familiar, you might remember seeing her in the film Blame It on Rio with Michael Caine and Demi Moore Do you remember that one? I think you do And though she had supporting roles in the films Death Becomes Her and Far and Away Johnson hopes her role in Body Shot will help her achieve true leading lady status Ianbury Insurance permanently This year overflow crowds filled the screening rooms at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah to get a glimpse of the new features and documentaries from many of the world's undiscovered talent At film festivals like Sundance, up and coming filmmakers who don't have the benefit of big budgets and big studios to back them are forced to find ingenious and inexpensive ways to bring their labors of love to fruition But where there is a will there is a way and nobody knows that better than newcomer Robert Rodriguez whose winning ways have begun with his first feature effort entitled El Mariachi El Mariachi A film is called El Mariachi and it's the story of a Mariachi player who gets embroiled in a case of mistaken identity when his guitar case is accidentally thought to be a gangster's gun case The air thrusts him into the violent underworld of the futuristic border town in Mexico he has unfortunately entered El Mariachi debuted in this quiet rocky mountain town of Park City, Utah where young independent filmmakers make a pilgrimage each year to vie for exposure at the Sundance Film Festival It was here that 23 year old writer director Robert Rodriguez got more exposure than he ever dreamed of receiving for his small film El Mariachi, a film he made for $7,000 Low budgets don't necessarily mean low quality I mean when you have a low budget you're forced more to use your creativity and you have much more opportunity to invent things that probably have never been done before It's almost for making your own rules And make his own rules he did using real life props when he couldn't afford Hollywood sets You work with what you have around you For instance in our movie we use stuff in the movie that we knew we already had That pit bull that everyone laughs at, the dog in our movie, he was our dog The school bus was lent to us, the motorcycle, the turtle we found on the road If you just look around and just look at what's around you in a different way you might find stuff that makes something very entertaining And a lot of people tend to forget that what's around them is very interesting because they've just seen it so many times What's old to you is fresh to somebody else The young filmmaker says he's been directing films since he was a child with an early VCR purchased by his father It came with a camera attached, one of the old video cameras where you needed to look at a TV to see what you were focusing on because there was no viewfinder And since I had nine brothers and sisters I always had a cast and crew and I would make movies for years just for myself really I mean this movie was very expensive to me because I'm used to making movies for 20 bucks When it came time to find an audience for his film Robert thought it would be best received by Spanish speaking film goers So he boarded a plane for LA with an idea to meet film distributors who serviced that particular market So what I did while I was waiting, I'd never been in Los Angeles before, that's where the distributors were I dropped a demo tape off at the biggest agency I knew, I had read Robert Newman's name with International Creative Management They represent guys like Arnold Schwarzenegger, they would never sign somebody right off the street I just wanted to start opening some doors and they saw the demo tape the next day they called me back and said We want to sign you up, we want to represent you as a writer and a director And what began at the Sundance Film Festival has become as they say Hollywood history ICM helped secure Columbia Pictures as the film's distributor and El Mariachi became the lowest budgeted film of all time to be picked up by a major studio Robert credits much of the film's success to the positive word of mouth at Sundance So this is an American independent festival, so these are all independently made movies And my movie fits right in because it was so independently made no one was even supposed to see it, so it fits right in perfectly The Griswolds It's one long holiday The holiday plunge in National Land Food's Vacation, 8.30 tonight on 9 Please consider a Mitsubishi from Bob Moran Considering a No, of course it's true, I wouldn't be telling it When he was a struggling filmmaker down in Texas, a couple months ago He sold his body to science What? For experiments at this medical facility in Texas They took off some skin grafts on the back of his arms He said they looked like little crescents on the back of each arm And he made $2,000 over a five day period by doing that Just to make money for his art Wow, that's dedication don't you think? Sure is So I wonder what I could sell, you know I need some money You know what Mike, nobody would buy any part of your body I could have a small sale You know Robert Rodriguez is on his way, no question about that Since receiving accolades and the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival Rodriguez has also been giving something that he is not used to Cash, Columbia Pictures has recently given him $6 million for his next picture Which is likely to be a remake of his original $7,000 film, El Mariachi They're gonna make it big with car crashes and stuff Special effects and Yeah, probably ruin it We can't wait for that one What do Tom Cruise, Robert Redford, Spike Lee and Danny DeVito all have in common? The Oscars Why? Well after many months of speculation over who would get the nod come nomination day These unfortunate few have one thing in common None of them made the cut But if they didn't, who did? Music While the rest of the world was fast asleep Hollywood, or at least its tireless press corps, was up bright and early 4.45 a.m. to be exact To hear the 1992 Academy Award nominations Now there are always a few surprises But this year Hollywood found out that big money doesn't necessarily mean big nominations For the past two months the talk of the town in Hollywood has been Oscar As everyone places their bets and tries to predict this year's nominees In the past it's usually movies with big names stars and big time budgets that take the nod come Oscar time But this year with nearly 30% of the nominations in major categories going to independent films It's a whole new ball game While it's not a surprise that a traditional Hollywood movie like Clint Eastwood's revisionist western Unforgiven Would be honored with nine Oscar nominations It is unusual for an independent film like Howard's End At eight million dollars Howard's End cost less to make than Tom Cruise earned for a few good men But Jerry Rich, senior vice president of marketing at Miramax Says it's the movie, not the bottom line, that matters It was a very strong year for independents and there were some very noteworthy films from the independent arena And I think that what we saw today was a reflection of the strength of the independents rather than The weakness of the major studio films There's no way I could beat you is there? Howard's End wasn't the only independent film to hit it big in Hollywood Miramax's little known film The Crying Game cost only 4.2 million dollars to make And went home with the second highest number of nominations at six Including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor for Irishman Stephen Ray And the biggest surprise of all The 1992 nominees for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role are Jay Davidson in The Crying Game The Crying Game is a movie of many mysteries And I think the press is very cognizant of that and has been very sensitive to that And very careful about not giving the public too much information So I think with today there will be a lot of discussion about The Crying Game having six nominations And I think everybody will be very prudent and very careful in the information they do communicate Unlike last Oscar season when Rambling Rose was the only independent film to receive multiple Oscar nominations This year independent filmmakers have turned out gems for the price of rhinestones Like the Miramax film Passion Fish which cost only seven million dollars to make An independent film is a film that was made for a modest budget And it's also a film that's released in a more specialized manner And in many cases one or two theaters in each of the major markets So it's a very different type of movie Apparently good things do come in small packages because Miramax's Passion Fish earned two Oscar nominations John Sayles is vying for the Best Original Screenplay award And Mary MacDonald is up for the Best Actress award Against another Miramax film star Joan Plowright who's been nominated for Enchanted April I love creating characters that are as different as possible from the last one I did let's say As long as there is a quality about the script and the quality about the people I'm going to work with That I admire Then I'm happy I got a writer in here who's got a pitch I think you ought to hear I think it's hot Independent film distributor Fineline has also gotten into the Oscar game Their hit film The Player which poked fun at the Hollywood scene took home two nominations One for its screenwriter Michael Tolkien and another for the film's director Robert Altman Who never thought Hollywood would take the teasing all the way to Oscar time The Hollywood community will receive this film probably as a home movie Boy, you thought you could go Finally New Line's Damage rounds out the list of independent nominees As Miranda Richardson goes to bat for the Best Supporting Actress award Had Oscar ever entered her mind? I don't think about that Now Hollywood is unlikely to give up on its big budget features and big name stars But a few wins on Oscar night will undoubtedly mean bigger and better things for independent filmmakers in years to come Well some surprises there I know you were there very early Very early 4.45 in the morning I didn't see you at all Oh no I was in bed Were you surprised by any of the nominations? I was, specifically Malcolm X I loved the movie so much, I know you loved it too They got two nominations, Denzel got nominated and he should have But Spike should have as well Lots of other things, cinematography was beautiful, the music Come on guys A snub there for sure But The Crying Game was one of my favorite films of the last year and I hope it does very very well Of course I haven't seen Unforgiven yet Oh, slap you, I'll not forgive you for that While the Oscar nominations aren't the only game in town, the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has just come out with its nominees For the 13th Annual Razzie Awards Dishonoring the worst achievements in film Contending for worst picture, The Bodyguard, Christopher Columbus, The Discovery, Final Analysis, Newsies and Shining Through Oh I have a good Shining Through story but I'm not going to tell it I love that story For worst actor, it's Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas, Jack Nicholson, Sylvester Stallone and Tom Selleck And finally for worst actress, Kim Basinger, Lorraine Bracco, Melanie Griffith, Whitney Houston and Sean Young take the nomination nod Winners of the 13th Annual Razzie Awards will be announced March 28th, the day before the Oscars I'm so happy they don't give Razzie's for entertainment news programs We'd win them every year A shoe in This week in the United States, Bill Murray's new comedy, Groundhog Day, was number one at the box office with $14.6 million earned Richard Gere and Jodie Foster's new Civil War flick, Summersbee, was number two with $9.9 million earned And Disney's G-rated, Homeward Bound, moves up to number three with $8.1 million earned at the box office Elsewhere around the world, Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston's film, The Bodyguard, is still number one in Germany, Australia and Japan Now here's a look at this week's top films at box offices around the world and their total earnings to date in U.S. dollars The Bodyguard Adelaide Community Music and the Febburton City Council proudly present the Rhythms of Life Festival A two-day carnival of music, dance and arts, celebrating South Australia's many cultures and lifestyles Rhythms of Life, a celebration for everyone Rhythms of Life at the Febburton Oval, Saturday and Sunday, March 6th and 7th, midday to midnight both days Ask tickets or at the gate For whatever reason they find themselves without a partner, men and women have a need for companionship Sharing today's lifestyle with someone else can double the pleasure The simplest, nicest way to find that someone is to call Link Introductions If you think you're the lonely one, phone Link, they'll tell you you're not the only one Link Introductions, corner West Terrace and Waymild Street, the people who need people Howe Leather, huge range, low prices, real leather, right now Why not buy real leather, big savings, right now Howe Leather, three locations, main North Road Enfield, corner Groton Morphett Street City and South Road Edwards Town, open seven days So she said, why not try Adelaide Auto Records? This year, a vintage vocalist singing the songs of another old timer is nominated Yes, Tony Bennett has a chance at another Grammy This time for his new album, Perfectly Frank, a salute to Frank Sinatra I don't believe your heart is going to move Maybe it's going to walk away Bennett's career has spanned more than three decades He says he was inspired to record this album as a reaction to what he calls mediocre songwriting by young singers today Who insist on writing their own music The reason that I did the album was to show the young people if you're going to write songs Stretch up to a Jerome Kern, to a Cole Porter Stretch up to that kind of quality because instead of getting a hit that will last for six weeks or six months Instead of that, get a song that will last right through the seasons, right through the years I love piano In choosing the collection of music for Perfectly Frank, Tony sought the advice of Sinatra's former pianist Bill Miller, his accompanist, I told him I was sketching out an album saluting Sinatra He said, well, stay away from the big hits, he said, do the torch songs of Sinatra And sure enough he was right because those songs are like little stories, like little short stories And they tell stories and they're much more interesting to listen to Softly nice, it's paradise It's what I long to see You made my life so glamorous You can't blame me for feeling amorous It's no surprise that Bennett is paying tribute to Sinatra Old Blue Eyes has often publicly honored Bennett, calling him the best singer in the business Bennett's most remembered song, the tune that put him on the map in the world of pop music Was the 1962 classic, I Left My Heart in San Francisco It's a song that he didn't have a lot of faith in In fact, he chose to place it on the B side of the record I put the A side once upon a time and figured that it would just be a local hit in the San Francisco area, the other side And it was turned around by the public It became an international song, it's become my signature song It's afforded me an adventure, it came out in 1962 I was allowed to sing my first concert ever at Carnegie Hall because of it And then from there, I've been literally sold out throughout the world ever since that time After winning two Grammys in 1963, Bennett is excited that 30 years later he could have a third Oh, it's terrific, you know I'm just thrilled that someone was nice enough to nominate me It's wonderful It's marvelous That you should care for me As if being honored by the music industry isn't enough, Bennett is also being honored for his other love, his paintings This next spring, the Smithsonian Institute is going to give me a permanent collection of my paintings And an exhibition of video of my music So there'll be a permanent collection in the Smithsonian Institute and I'm thrilled with that So whether Bennett's fans are visiting the Smithsonian or the concert hall, this crooner's just thrilled to be able to delight his audiences around the world Gold dust at my feet on the sunny side of the stream They're beautiful! Applause Bennett, who's been nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance category, will compete for the award against Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, Bobby Short, and Julie Wilson on February 24th On the U.S. pop music charts, the soundtrack to Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston's movie, The Bodyguard, is still number one Kenny G's LP, Breathless, holds on to number two And Dr. Dre's, The Chronic, hangs in there at number three And now let's give a listen to Arrested Development's new song, Mr. Wendell, while we take a look at this week's top albums on pop music charts around the world Mr. Wendell has freedom, a free that you and I think is dumb Free to be without the worries of a quick to dis society, for Mr. Wendell's a bum His only worry's our sickness and an occasional harassment by the police and their chase Uncivilized we call him, but I just saw him eat off the food we've wasted Civilization, are we really civilized? Yes or no? We're the judge, with thousands of innocent men who could be brutally enslaved or killed before a racist grudge Mr. Wendell has tried to warn us about our ways, but we don't hear him talk Is it his fault when we've gone too far and we got too far, cause of him we walk Mr. Wendell, a man, a human in flesh, but not by law I need you dignity to stand with pride, realize that all in all you stand tall Go ahead Mr. Wendell Yeah, Mr. Wendell, yeah, yeah, Mr. Wendell Mr. Wendell, yeah Oh, Lord. Musician George Harrison is 50 years old. Harrison, who made it big in the 60s as one of the Beatles, has since found success on his own with the release of a number of solo LPs like Living in the Material World and All Things Must Pass. And actress Elizabeth Taylor is also another year older. Now 61 years old, Taylor had her first major film role in the 1944 national Velvet and has since racked up a number of credits including Cleopatra, Father of the Bride, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and two Oscars for her work in the films Butterfield 8 and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. And singer Johnny Cash is also 61 years old. Cash, who debuted on the country music scene in the mid-50s, is best known for his hit songs There You Go and I Walk the Line. Cash will most likely spend the day with his family, including his wife June and daughter, country music singer Roseanne Cash. Actress Joanne Woodward is also blowing out birthday candles this week, 63 to be exact. Woodward, who is best remembered for her Oscar-winning performance in the film Three Faces of Eve, has also starred in a number of other films, including From the Terrace and A Fine Madness. Woodward will probably be spending her birthday with her husband, actor Paul Newman. And topping off this week's Celebrity Birthdays is actor Tony Randall, who is 73 years old. Randall is best known for his role as neat freak Felix Unger, opposite the manically messy Jack Klugman in the popular TV series The Odd Couple. Incidentally, the pair recently revised their odd couple routine on stage at the University of California in Los Angeles. In Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner's movie The Bodyguard, Costner portrayed a man whose mission was to protect the life of a pop singer played by Houston. This fictional storyline has become reality for some stars, and that's why Moshe Alon, a real-life bodyguard, has found it easy to make a lucrative living, only in Hollywood. At any Hollywood gala event, a casual observer can always spot the stars. On the other hand, the person you are least likely to notice is their bodyguard, unless of course he looks like Kevin Costner. The Bodyguard with Costner in the title role and Whitney Houston as his client ranks as one of the most profitable movies ever made by the Warner Bros. studio, having grossed more than $106 million to date. And just as the Tom Cruise film Top Gun sent young men flocking to the nearest U.S. Navy recruiting offices, the Bodyguard has prompted some would-be Costners to take aim at the prospect of being a real guardian angel. The instructor at this shooting range near Hollywood is among the best in the business. He's Moshe Alon, the head of a company called Professional Security Consultants and a bodyguard to the stars. He and his staff provided security for Elizabeth Taylor's wedding at the Michael Jackson estate. In fact, he's so good that Liz won't leave home without him. And when two members of the popular TV series Beverly Hills 90210 recently visited Israel, Alon's native country, they decided to take him with them. It was there, Alon admits, that the 90210 phenomenon caught him with his guard down. I wasn't prepared mentally to 9, 14 years old, jumping and running and crazed completely. I mean, the first time I saw the show was after I started working with them, and I really got to like the people. Nevertheless, I never know that in Israel or I heard all over the world, there's going to be such an hysteria when they're coming in. Unlike this movie scene, fans in Israel didn't carry the TV stars away, prompting Bodyguard Alon to come to the rescue. Alon says Costner's character could have prevented this by doing more advanced work. And he says he's never heard of professional bodyguards shooting with their eyes closed. Does anybody know why you keep your eyes open? No tears. Alon says don't get him wrong. All in all, he actually liked Costner's bodyguard. For example, I like the idea that he wasn't such a huge guy. You don't look like a bodyguard. What did you expect? Well, I don't know, maybe a tough guy. This is my disguise. I like the exciting part of them falling in love. The only thing I can figure is for you to take me out. Of course, the possibility of falling in love with beautiful, wealthy clients is surely on the minds of new recruits. What has certainly been known to happen, Alon says, is definitely discouraged in his company, which employs more than 100 people, mostly men. It's not because we are chauvinists, it's just that not too many of them are coming out from law enforcement and available in the market. So, women are very trainable. Women are excellent shooters. They find that they have less ego when they come to shooting range or driving range. The problem is the clients. Some clients feel more secure with a man versus a woman. Also, I remember one client, one client I remember, who wanted only women protecting his wife. While being a bodyguard has its mundane side, protecting one of his clients at an event like the American Music Awards can be as stressful as watching for terrorists in South America. And Alon should know he's done both. It's less of a pressure working in the Hollywood area, but we have to be aware that over there we know who we're looking for. We're looking for a certain guerrilla group, a certain group of people who might do something versus Hollywood, versus here dealing with some people who might just want to be famous and push the trigger, you know? Despite the stress and the boredom, Alon says there is simply no other job like his. And by the way, he says, if Kevin Costner ever decides to change careers, he won't have to look very far. Him, I would hire in a second, sure. You know how popular we'll be? How many funkers we'll get then, huh? You know, some people want to have big houses and fast cars. I want a bodyguard. You do? Yes. Why? Well, it would just, you know, because when you're a woman and you live kind of in an unsafe city, it would just be nice to have one. In fact, one day when I was doing a show in kind of a bad area of town, the production crew hired me a bodyguard, which was an LAPD officer off duty as my bodyguard. And it was just so cool. Everywhere I went to have this little shadow there taking care of you. So who would you choose to have as your bodyguard? As my bodyguard? Oh my goodness. Some big athlete or something? Yeah, but I think you'd have to be really bright and intuitive. I think maybe someone who was a former police officer, maybe? Oh really? I don't know. Probably a lot of people would like to guard your body. Awww, aren't you sweet. Okay, that wraps this edition of World Entertainment Report.
