We went into complete trance. Because there was no end to it. We never knew where we were going, which way we were going. Half the time you couldn't see the sun or the sky. And all of a sudden out of the blue we were out of the jungle. Nineteen days later. We were thinner skeletons. There was hardly any food on the death march. But I always had a knack of singing. So I think it helped me through. I was dreaming of Australia. The land we left behind. Dreaming of the loved ones. We could always be reminded. Although it's only fancy. Our hearts within a shun. Gee but we'll make up for lost moments. When to Aussie we return. Although it's only fancy. Our hearts within a shun. Too much. The march was... If you survived that and you were going to get home. That's what we thought. But at the end of the march that's when the tough stuff comes in. At Ranao there was little food and no medicine. Sickness and exhaustion. Dysentery, berry-berry and malnutrition continued to exact a terrible toll. You just couldn't... you just couldn't picture it. You have to be there. I can't explain it. And it smells. You can smell death. The smell of death was there all the time. Unsuccessful escape attempts meant death. The beatings and the torture continued. The old prisoner was staked to the ground for ten days without food or water. I used to urinate on him and kick at him and slap him with sticks and spit on him. It took ten days before he died. And just before he died the guard, house corporal, he called out, Hey I think this man's dying you better come and get him. So we went over and we picked him up and carried him down to a little creek beside our camp. And we washed him and carried him in and laid him on the platform. And we had a doctor with us and Dr. Jeffries was still alive. And he said we've seen some dreadful things but if any of us get out of this camp this is one atrocity that has to be reported. That's the first thing I've done when I got out there to report that atrocity. And three of the guards have got hung over that. Newsbreak brought to you by National Mutual. Good afternoon. The first successful attempts were made by Dick Braithwaite, Owen Campbell and Bill Stipwich. My friend Bill Moxham, the one I could skate with, he came down and he said, I could see a heap of men up on the hill. They looked like skeletons. And it was the second march from Sandican arrive, 150 of them. 150 out of 600. A few days later they moved us up with them. And in the meantime, that happened to be that day, I was out on my working party, I just found a little rice stump. And all along I was planning on my escape. And when I got back to camp I said to Bill, we're going to go now, I know where there's a rice stump. And that's where we moved us up with out a lot. And we recruited another two to take with us, Nelson Short and Anderson. And we escaped that night into the jungle. On the 1st of August only 33 prisoners remained alive at Ranao. And just a few days before Japan's unconditional surrender they were shot. The Japanese attempted to destroy all records of the death marches and the killings and later falsified documents relating to Sandican. Keith Botrell, Bill Moxham and Nelson Short made good their escape just before the massacre at Ranao. With the help of natives they managed to link up with an advanced party of Australian commandos who parachuted into the area searching for surviving POWs. Mick Hodges, otherwise known as Lofty, was a commando in Z's special unit and wept when he saw the condition of the men. I was just absolutely horrified. I well remember seeing my first sight of them, we were walking along, we were being led along the track, and we came to this little clearing and there were these fellows, I'm just looking for a word to describe them really, they were just our fellow AIF guys that just, well to call them in a pitiful state is just not good enough. They were just full of beriberi, absolutely starved. I remember after the war seeing pictures of the horrors of Belson camp and the inmates there, but this was every bit and indeed more so to me because I was there and just saw it. I remember seeing Keith, Keith he was the worst of the lot physically. I thought to myself at the time there was no way this fellow was going to last 24 hours. Fortunately I was proved wrong on that. I said about time you got your Lofty. No I didn't. Keith and Lofty made a rare reunion to help tell this story. They're both members of the Sandarkin Memorial Foundation, which is attempting to raise funds to build memorials in all major centres where the men enlisted. So far they've covered Burwood in Sydney, Wagga Wagga, Tamworth and the Hunter, and have Brisbane and Melbourne in their sights. It's a last tribute to those who didn't come home, the final chapter in a tragic story. I don't like talking about it at all. I could talk for a week and still have more to say. The wheel has swung full circle, the rising sun has set. This is the end of the Japanese dream of empire. For some 14,000 Australians it means going home at last. From Chagie, from jungle hell camps, from Sumatra, from Japan, they're going home. But for some liberation comes too late, and their names are sadly added to the long roll of 7,777 Australians who died in captivity. They had been starved, they had been beaten, they had been forced to work until they dropped and were kicked to their feet again. Cholera, malaria, pellagra, berry berry, dysentery, smallpox, tropical ulcers had worn their bodies down, but not their spirits. Many of them owed their lives to doctors and medical orderlies who were their fellow prisoners. And now they were going home. Australians were horrified at the images of W's they saw on newsreels. Families battled with their emotions as fathers, sons, brothers and uncles were met at the dockside. The Amps they call themselves. Only the toughest and bravest could have lived through what these men did. They had suffered, they had endured, and somehow they had come through. But for some the anguish and the uncertainty of not knowing how or where their loved ones died continued. From the beginning to the end, the tradition of mateship eased away. And now at last, after the terrible years, their own loved land, their homeland, their Australia. They are welcomed with flooding relief, with affection, with love, and with pride too. For they had faced with honor a sterner test of manhood than any other Australian soldiers were called on to meet. It's good to be in uniform again. Along with the heart wrenching anxieties are ended now. There's a future to look forward to again. After the war, an army graves unit moved into Borneo to sift through the ruins of Sandarkin and trek the route of the death marches. A large tree marked the center of the camp. Around it there were pitiful reminders of the tragedy that had taken place. A couple of weathered slouch hats, dog tags, personal effects, photos and tattered pieces of clothing would prove invaluable in identifying the dead and helping to piece together their stories. Recovered remains were later buried at a war cemetery on the island of Lubbawin. For some families the search for information goes on. Newcastle woman Jill Bladen was just nine years old when her father, Sergeant Robert Brown, went away to war. I can remember him going. We were taken to Broadmeadow railway station and there was all streamers and everything like that and everybody was sort of crying and they sang, oh anxiety. He never got off the train. I was lifted up. I remember that to the window. And then I went to my grandma's place and then the next thing I remember I was taken to Sydney with my mum and Bobby, my other brother, and I can remember a boat with all streamers. The next thing you knew that people just say, oh well isn't it a shame a dad died a prisoner of war and you never heard no more. Sort of how he died or when he died on the 11th of July, 45. And it's just more or less been over the years that I've sort of wondered more about him. And different ones that you talk to, well they'd only tell you that he worked at the dairy farmers and he loved the Army and all that type of thing, but you never sort of knew what he really was. So I thought I'll start and ask questions. Jill located an old army mate her dad had taken her to visit when he was on leave just before they were shipped overseas. Who had later been captured by the Japanese at Singapore. That's great. I'm not worried about that are I? I'm a louse aren't I? Well I don't think you'd change that much. No, no, no. I didn't get any better looking I think like that. During news clippings a few old photos and cards were Jill's only tangible link with her father. It was the chance find of a souvenir shipboard dinner menu that helped her locate Garth Walton, better known as Bluey. Here's something I told you this morning, Mr Lin. You forget any of those blanks? Oh yeah. That's a young one isn't it? I lost contact with your dad. You never seen dad after that? I never saw your dad after he got taken back to Changi. Bluey saw the war out breaking rocks for ballast on the Burma railway. He nearly lost a leg after a Japanese guard smashed it with a pick. Mick however was sent to Sandarkin. It's believed he survived the death march but later died at Ranao. I don't think it was fair to go all through that. Had he lived another day or two days he'd have come home. On a cold windy July morning at Tamworth, another Sandarkin memorial is about to be unveiled. It honours the 280 New England and North Coast men who enlisted, never to return. Brass plaques around the base of the monument bear their names. Until now many have never had the chance to reconcile their sense of loss and grief. This memorial is their special place. Jim Milner, chairman of the Sandarkin Memorial Foundation and also a former POW, addressed the gathering. Fearing an uprising at Sandarkin in 1944, the Japanese had relocated a group of Allied officers from the camp, among them Jim Milner. That twist of fate probably saved their lives. Not so lucky was a private William Matthew Keating, 8th Division Postal Unit, who was the uncle of now Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating. Well I think it's important to remember them because for a long time it was forgotten. But important to remember them for the intrinsic value of their lives and for the sacrifice they made, for their indignant stand against the Japanese, for their defence of the values of Australia for which they fought, resisted and died. Did you worry that they'd been long forgotten given that your uncle was one of the people that served? Well it always has worried me. I think that the recognition of the Pacific War in Australia has never been what it should have been. This is when continental Australia was under assault, threatened and we were defended in the first instance by militia, young men in singlets and shorts and part of New Guinea and of course by regular forces throughout the Pacific. And in heroic battles where we were first to stem the tide of Japanese aggression and then of course resist the tyranny of the torture and punishment meted out to Australian, British and other allied service men and women. Most of us here today lost relatives and friends in British North Borneo. We should also remember the large number of local residents from many races who risked their lives to assist the prisoners and the allied war effort. Hundreds of these people suffered cruel torture at the Japanese. Many lost their lives. Be forever mindful of the inhumanity of war lest all tragedy and suffering shall have been in vain. Like mist lifting from the mountains the memorial was unveiled, struck in bronze the rugged relief of the island and a brass ribbon tracing the route of the death marchers. Bless O Lord this memorial which we bless in your name. May it remind all who pass this way of those who served their country even unto death. May it remind us to pray for them that they may gain eternal life. And I sprinkle the memorial with this little vial of holy water. The blessing of God be upon it. They shall not grow old as we that are let grow old. Age shall not weary them or the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. We will remember them lest we forget. We've had wonderful cooperation with the town and the city council to make this possible and we're delighted with the result. Do you think finally too for the people of Tamworth and the relatives in this north New South Wales area it's also something for them now, something physical? It enables them to come to terms with their grief, many of them, and a lot of the people I spoke to didn't have any information at all a few years ago and that's why we were so anxious to honour these men in bronze. Amid the excited clamour which follows the ceremony Keith Botrell moves as if in two worlds, one of private remembrance, the other is a keenly sought after source of information and celebrity. But he can't help everyone. There are just three Death March survivors left and Keith is the only one who makes regular public appearances. He tires under the constant attention. Relatives are still haunted by what befell their loved ones. Their search for any more source of information is unending. Others have found peace of mind. Rhonda Brighton from South West Rocks grew up in a legacy orphanage. My mother died in 35 giving birth, my father joined the war in 39, he went to Singapore in 42 and from then I haven't had any parents. What was your sensation when you first started finding these traces, these threads of information? Oh it was thrilling, it was just so relieving. You have no idea Andrew, it was just as if the doors had opened up and I found out all about my dad. After going through all the records and everything, it was exciting to know what your dad did and all about your father. People that have got parents don't realise just how lucky they are. The end of one chapter for you as well is now having this tangible link here in Tamworth, that must in some way be fulfilling now. Oh yes great and when the one in Brisbane opens it will be more because that's where my dad's name will be on. He was in the second 26th and that will be my biggest thrill, is to go up there and see that one. Getting enough calcium each day is easy. Today Mr Keating spoke of another aspect of Australian history that must never be discarded. It was at the Sandarkin Memorial unveiling at Burwood in Sydney, Keith Botrell met Frank Murray, the son of Keith's best mate Richard, who died on the march. I got hold of Don Wall's book and he mentions my father's name in the book. So I wrote a letter to him asking for more information and three days after I wrote the letter he rang me up. He said, you know that Keith Botrell is your father's best mate. That was it. Keith's been doing all the talk and I've been doing all the listening. He's the one that's got all the experiences and he's got some pretty grim stories to tell about what happened over there and let's hope it never happens again. For four or five years my best friend, I went right through the action with him, right through the prison camps with him, right through all the death and all the horrors, and they run the beina through him for a small bag of rice we stole. And I really worried about that for 45 years. Every day I thought of my mate, a real good friend. And six months ago his son contacted me. I never knew he had a son. And when I told his son, I could tell his son, I was able to tell his son every little thing about his father, saying he was my best friend. And that relieved me. It sort of lifted me right of relief off my mind and like escaping again it was. So pressure pot inside me, thinking about my friend all the time. Now it's eased. I'm happy. Music From Sundaqan they came away, stumbling until they fell. There along the track they lay, leaving only six to tell. The trail is silent now, their voices still. Those scars have ran out, the years have filled. The signs of massacres have all but gone, leaving those of us who mourn to reflect upon. Music Music Rhonda, did you eventually find peace? No, when the war was over, Andrew, I was still trying to find my father. And it took me a long, long time to find him and whereabouts he was. And that was to me a relief because I knew then that he was gone. He wasn't alive somewhere searching for us. And if he'd have come back from the war, I'd know then that my sister, who we were part of as babes, would have come back and we would have had a family. Whereas it was, we were just two sisters in name and just grown apart. And it's a tragedy, a tragedy in life. Let's just say after this moment we've just had, I might start dreaming about you too. I don't know. Finally, John, we have to talk. It's important. Excuse me. No, no, you can't leave yet. We've got to talk. Look. I'll see you soon. I said it was important, didn't I? Maybe to you it is. To both of us. Listen to me, Ella, man, nothing you've got to say to me is important. So just get out of my face, will you? You don't care about Isabella, is that it? What do you want from me? Get back. Get back from where? Have you seen either of them since 5 o'clock? Just answer the question. No, you answer my question. Get back from where? Ella, man, what have you done with Isabella? Would you please just stop hovering around, Kayla? I'm fine. I'm not hurt. I'm in bed. The excitement is over for the day. I'm sorry. Maybe I should just come back later, okay? No, wait, wait. No, don't go. I'm really sorry. Maybe the Brady's have seen her. Good idea. I'll meet you back there. No, I got a better idea. Don't you ever meet me anywhere. On second thought, if you do run into Carly, why don't you put it on a news broadcast? Julie! Chif! Hello. What are you doing? You just got out of the hospital. Out. Got out. That's the operative word. No, no. Operative is the operative word. You just had major surgery. You shouldn't be out at all. Well, I had to have a meeting with my importer. Unavoidably, because he's only going to be in town for this one night, you see. And there is no one else who could have taken the meeting for you? Not that I can think of. Well, I think we need to have a little talk about delegating authority, Mrs. Williams. Now, is now a convenient time good, because I'm free, too. Shall we? Are you looking to lose that arm, sir? Take my chances. Meanwhile, as long as I've got it, this arm is taking you home and tucking you in. What do you belong? I haven't been tucked in in 30 years. Don't worry. It's just like riding a bike. Once you've done it, you never really forget how. Your pulse is a little fast, but it's fine. So, what if we're stuck here all night? Hey, you won't turn it to worry about that. I know it isn't easy, but it's really the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby. What if it comes, Carly? Well, it is possible. Isabella, I don't think... We don't have anything. We don't have any equipment. You don't even have your doctor's bag. Look, we have one contraction. If that's what it was, then let me finish. Look, you're not alone, and we are not helpless as long as we take this one step at a time. Okay. Why don't you crack your window a little bit, let some air in. Okay. Now, if we're careful, we should have enough gas to keep us warm until morning, and then by then, someone's going to find us. Darryl, take off, and I'll find our way around. Oh, no. Come on, I won't go far. I promise you that. No, I'm not going to get that one. All right. Oh, God, it's worse. It's worse than before. It's about breathing. Oh, John! Come on, relax your muscles. Relax your muscles. You're doing just fine. There's nothing to worry about. I'm not going to let anything happen to you. Why is this happening? Something's wrong. Breathe, Isabella. Come on, baby, come on. Their journey begins 9.30 tonight. In a bold, sexy new series. With all the right ingredients. I hear he gives great scent. He's a rude, arrogant, pompous ass. Now it's here. I'll just go find some of the other doctors involved with the case. Maybe I can redeem myself. No, Rob, you know, maybe you should just wait till the morning to start this case. Have you had dinner or anything yet? Dinner? Oh, well, no. Yeah, I brought that with me. Kayla, please, take him out to dinner. Oh, no, hey, wait. There's enough here for all of us. I got others. Uh, are you sure? Oh, sure, I'm sure. I'll see you in the morning. Oh, later. Whatever. It doesn't matter. I kind of need to be on my own for a while. All right. I'll call you later. Mm-hmm. Go on and enjoy yourselves. All right. Hey, you pick the place, all right? Anywhere you want is fine. I really gotta stretch my legs. God, I was on that plane forever. Hmm. That's good. Be sure you get the whole mess up, though. That's it. Okay. Well, you're gonna clean it up, huh? Let's see some things never change. Well, you gotta stay on top of it, right? Right. Right. Right, right. Well, who do I have to talk to to get some takeout chowder for Isabella? Well, that's my department. Coming right up, sir. Well, it kind of looks like, uh, you guys are planning on asleep over tonight, huh? Yeah, it looks like it does, too. Yeah, well, that wasn't the plan, though, you know. Oh, Carly must have got herself tied up someplace. She'll be gone any minute now, huh? She'll be gone any minute now, huh? You're still here. Good. Hi, Lawrence. I'm doing some work for Grandpa C. Well, that's terrific, son Douglas. You did a great job. All right, outside now, man. Sorry. Outside now. We have something to take care of, don't we? Don't we, though. I'll be out in a minute. Go on. How about you take the boy upstairs, huh, and get him set for bed, huh? Yeah, I'll be fine, yes, it is. Yeah, uh, John, the chowder is here. Come on, son Douglas. Good night, Lawrence. Good night, John. Good night, son Douglas. See you soon. Don't be too long. Oh, now you're spending all your free time with Mr. Alamayan, eh? Yeah, no, not exactly. Does this have something to do with Carly not being back? No, no. Isabella and Carly took off somewhere. They're back, I'm down, that's all. It's no big deal. Oh, yeah, no big deal, huh? That's fine. That's why you're spending all your time with Alamayan, huh? Sean, Sean, like I said, it's no big deal. When I find her, I'll give you a call, all right? Dad? You better. Ring. Oh, no. Isabella? No, wait. What is my feeling? I'm not sure. Oh, it's, um... It's over? It's passing. Oh, no. Would you take a deep breath in? Let it out slow. Rise. I swear he's gonna pay for this. Oh, who? Lawrence. That's why we're here, isn't it? That's why this happened. Oh, no, Carly, come on, we need to take a chance. You know, if we... If we thought that Bull was really being held up on those mountains, we had to find him. Dad, what else could we have done? I know, you're right. Look, there's no reason in thinking about what didn't happen. We have to concentrate on what we can do. Okay? We're getting a flashlight. I'm gonna go find help. What? Look, I'm not gonna lie to you. The pain you had was a contraction. It was your second one. Then I was right. It's happening. Look, I don't want you to worry, all right? Because we have plenty of time, even if it is premature labor. I just... There's no point in both of us sitting here waiting, okay? I'm gonna go find someone. What if the contractions start again? I won't go far, I promise you that. Look, I want you to turn on the car. Turn on the car right now, all right? Keep yourself warm, okay? Turn on the radio, how's that? Hey, there you go. Classical, perfect. No way for the music sound, I can't hear what's going on outside. Isabella, I don't have any medication to help you. But the music is the best thing I can offer. Concentrate on that, okay? It'll work. Okay, okay. I'll be back soon, I'm going. I doubt that. Come on. Okay. Ow. Once there was a way to get back home, once. Once there was a way to get back home, sweet pretty darling, do not cry. Morning. John, what are you doing? Oh, I'm just standing here observing you. Oh, I'm just standing here observing how beautiful the two of you are when you sleep. The two of us? Mm-hmm. You and the baby, son of a gun, as it be. I think you popped last night. I did not. Oh, perhaps not. Why don't you better get prepared, it's going to happen sooner or later. Yeah, well, the later the better. What are you doing here? I thought you'd be working or something. No, I drew late shift today. No, I meant trying to help find Bo. Oh, oh. The police commander seems to think he has a lead on that. Really? Mm-hmm. He's acting pretty hopeful, so I guess I have to also. Oh, God, I'm feeling better already. I like to hear that. Now you can dig into this great healthy breakfast I made you. Oh, I don't know if I should be eating if I'm getting so fat. I didn't say fat. I said pregnant. And I think you look beautiful. Oh, Joe. You don't know how much this baby knew mean to me. That's why I'm here to personally take care of you, so I think it's time to start eating up already. Oh, thank you. I can feed myself, thank you. Can you really? I almost got into you, but I have to go. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I almost got into you, but I have to admit I love it. Mm. Let me better get used to it, baby. Because I'm going to heap this on you until you OD. Mm. Mm. Mm. Mm. Mm. Mm. Mm. Mm. Mm. Mm. There. There. And so we ended dearly. Said to relax, but I hope it didn't. Ah, listen to the music. Ah, listen to the music. Oh, I love you. Oh, I love you. No. Oh. Carly? Carly? Carly? Carly? Oh. Oh. Oh. Carly? Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Go. Oh. Oh. Oh. I'm so sorry. Baby, don't fight the pain, all right? You have to let it pass through. You have to relax, okay? Relax. Okay. Come on, the contractions won't ease up unless you breathe, Isabella. Come on, work with me. I want you to take a deep breath. Take a deep breath in. Let it out. Slow and even. Oh, that's it. Now, some short ones like your panting. Good. Count them out five at a time. That's five. That's it. Now, take a deep one in. Another deep breath. Slow. Set a rhythm. Put one grip. Great. Relax your muscles. Sit stuffing. Relax it. That's good. That's good. Take another deep breath in. Okay. Let it out. Nice and slow. That's it. It's over. It's over. That's it. Oh. That's it. Oh. I did... You did great. Oh, God, I didn't think you heard me. You did great. Well, you're kidding. I told you I wouldn't go far. I made you a promise, remember? Yeah. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. Did you see anything? Yeah. Yeah, there's a turn-off. Not too far from Brookville. It's, uh, Big Dirt Road, remember? Yeah. Up to the left, to Service Road, right? Yeah, and I'll be right to the back of the Brookville Clinic. It won't take me long to walk there. Just to walk there, you mean? No. Look, you're freezing already, and you're gonna slow me down. I want you to get back in the car and wait. Carly, if the contractions start again... You'll know what to do. You'll breathe. You'll do just what you did. Oh, no! Look, I can't stay here. Don't you understand that? I can't stay here. Walking would increase the control. You'll breathe, you'll do just what you did. No, look, I can't stay here. Don't you understand that? I can't stay here. Walking would increase the contractions. It might even... Look, you said there was a clinic. If you won't go with me, I won't walk. I will crawl. Do anything I can to save my baby. You have to help me, Carly. You have to help me save my baby. Okay? Okay. You'll go. Come on. Thank you. Just hang on to me. Okay. Okay. All right. You take a breath. You take a break whenever we need it, okay? Leave me, okay? Go on, go on, go on. Your baby's just gonna be fine. Okay. So soon are we at the estate? Mom! Hi, Taylor. Hi. Hi, I was telling him so much about the chowder. I thought we'd come by and get some. I hope it's not too late. No, no, I'm sure there's a bowl left, sure. Great. Thank you. Who is your son, huh? Oh, I'm sorry. Rob Stimkowski. This is my father, Sean Brady, and Caroline Brady. Hi. He's the attorney that's gonna be handling the suit against the trauma center. Oh. You're the one, huh? Yeah, that's me. Nice to meet you. Excuse me. I just gotta make a note of something before I forget what I remembered here. Kayla. Just a moment. I'm gonna help her out here. How'd you get all that stuff in there? Well, it's just... I'm glad you came by. John was just here and Lawrence Alamane. They were here together? Well, I don't know. I don't want your father to get more upset than he already is, but I think maybe Carly and Isabella are missing. Your father was ready to run out the door and rescue them. Well, did John tell you that they were missing? Not exactly. I think he was trying to keep us from being upset. Well, then don't be upset until you have reason to. Don't go sounding the alarm before you have to. I don't want to, but your father's very worried, so am I. Well, don't be worried. Look, I better give him this chatter or he'll forget what he's doing here. Sean? We need potatoes for the morning. Yeah, right, right, right. You know, young man, what you need is a system. We'll be right back. I got a system. What are you talking about? I know where everything goes here. I mean, this goes here, these go over here, and this goes, oh, oh, someplace else. Remind me about that. Hey, what was all that whispering about? Hey, this is good. Um, my parents are just upset about my brothers, so... Oh, Roman and Bo, they're missing, right? Steal trap or what? Well, now it seems that Bo's girlfriend has gone after him, and Pop wants her to go too if my mom would let him. Well, your mom is right. I mean, that's the kind of thing that should be handled by the police, and nobody should be playing hero here. He's not trying to play hero. My Pop's just like that. He likes to help people out. I mean, it's just the way he is. Oh. Well, if he's the kind of guy who needs to do that, let him go. I mean, he should do something. Wait, wait just a second. You just said let the police handle it. Now you're saying let him handle it. I mean... Do I look like Ann Landers? I don't have all the answers, Kayleigh. What do I know about families, huh? I don't know. Mmm, really good chowder, though. I'm sorry. No, nothing like that at all. It's just going to take a little longer than I anticipated. But... but there is no time. We can't stay here much longer. I'm very well aware of my financial constraints, thank you. I must take some action soon. But Miss Danielle, you don't actually intend to... No, of course not, only as a last resort. But I'll tell you one thing. I'm not going to be without money or companionship for long, Gabby. Not for long. On a coward affair... Hailing the herd... This was the front line, newly dead... I guess then it's safe to assume the news isn't good. I'm not going to walk again, am I, Marcus? Look, we don't know that, Shane. Well, what do you know? I'm sorry, Shane. There's still too much swelling in the lower back to determine whether the nerves have been severed or crushed. Once we know that... How are you going to find out? Surgery. Fine, let's schedule it tomorrow then. What are we waiting for? It's not that cut and dry, Shane. Your heart stopped twice right after the accident. Now any type of procedure at all is going to be risky. Well, what kind of risks are we talking about? I think the best thing we should do right now is we should wait. Marcus, what kind of risks are we talking about? If I have this surgery, if it doesn't work, what are you saying? I'll be a vegetable? Shane, we don't use that... Yes or no, Marcus? Yes. Or worse, if you push this procedure and your body is not ready and something goes wrong, you could die, Shane. Hey, how you feeling? Better? Yeah. All right, I'll make sure I bring my baby equipment. I thought about it so much. Yeah, of course you did. What about John and me? We'd be together. Just seeing the look on his face when he sees his child for the first time. And what would you call the baby, huh? You two decided on a name? What'd I say, huh? What? If it's a girl, he wants to call it babe. Babe? Well, you know, he loves baseball. And I was against it from the beginning, but I'd just about do anything right now to see him smile. You know he doesn't smile. Not right now, at least. You ready? Uh-huh. Okay. I can't lose this baby, Carly. This is the only flesh and blood that he has in the whole world. You are both going to be fine. Okay? Come on. There's been everywhere. There's no trace of them. Wrong, pal. We haven't been where they are. So come on, man. Thank you. Help me out, damn it. For God's sakes, I'm as worried as you are. Yeah, I'm kind of wondering why that is. After all, I know what I'm doing here. Yes, we know all about you and Mrs. Bubba. Yeah, we know all about you and Carly, too. Once upon a time, she blew that, didn't you, pal? Did I? As far as she's concerned. So what's the big fire for all of a sudden, anyway? Look, I'm not about to explain my life to you. You couldn't understand anyway, a man with no roots, no family. Oh, I understand you, pal. The original Mr. Badfinger, everything you touch rots. Well, I got a bulletin for you, pal. If I were you, I'd take it to heart. Assuming I have one. Until Go gets back in the picture, you've got to answer to me. So if you want to stay in one piece, you keep your hands off Carly Manning. You got it? Hey, am I making myself clear? Transparent, Mr. Black. If you make yourself any clearer, you'd disappear altogether, which would be a mercy to all of us. Julie, take off your clothes. What? You heard me. I said take off your clothes. Yes, I heard what you said. But did you hear the way I said it? Take off your clothes, please, now. What is it the doctor wants? Your shoulder is stiff. I have eyes. Yes, I know. Big green ones. Sit nice and straight in your head, too. Thank you. Now, the jacket, please. Your deltoid muscles are aching for a massage. I just did not realize that you, of all people, are on duty at this moment. When it comes to my patients, I am on duty night and day. And I do know what's best for you, Mrs. Williams. As a professional, in this case. Lean forward, please. What? Just hold still. What are you doing? Hold still. Chip, I really don't... Well, I hope you're enjoying yourself. My personal pleasure is not remotely the issue. Not even remotely? That's right. However, you should feel free to experience the moment any way you see fit. As for me, I'm just living up to my Hippocratic oath. Yeah. How does that feel? To tell you the truth, it feels pretty good. Just relax. Relax, you're much too tight. Hmm. Yeah, there. Now, isn't that better? Better? Better. And better. Chip. Julia. I want you to go home. Thank you. I don't want you to go home. Now. Oh, God, what the heck happened? Why don't they answer? Oh, we should go somewhere where somebody can find us. Maybe they're all gathered up further asleep or something. Come on. I can't do this. Yes, you can. Come on, this doesn't make any sense. Hello? We lost, nobody's there. No, we haven't lost. Just hang on a second. What are you doing? Look, everything we need is inside there. Just get away from the door, okay? Carly, what are you doing? What did I tell you? Believe me, get in. Believe that you did it. Yeah, believe it. Don't tell anybody, believe it. Look, try and stay warm, okay? Okay. Where are you going? I don't know. Okay. Phone. Phone. Sorry. Okay. Call an ambulance. Everything will be fine. Oh, no. Come on. Don't do this. Come on. Come on. Newsbreak brought to you by National Mutual. Good afternoon. You certainly can't be referring to my mood. That is anything but up. You heard from the ISA doctor, didn't you? Yeah. And you know the test results, don't you? Shane? Well, according to the ISA specialist, my choices are pretty clear. If a little limited, my best option is surgery. Surgery? If I ever want to know, am I going to walk again? But if you have surgery in your condition, Shane... Yes, that's right. I know. Then you could die. You could die. Isabella! Are you sure that's her car? What the hell kind of question is that? Of course I'm sure. Isabella! Well, there's no one around here now. The powers of observation stunned me. Check for a note or a message of any kind. There's nothing in here. The keys are in the ignition, though. Well, then they must have left in a hurry. Yeah, because something happened here, but what the hell did? Well, the roads are icy. I was thinking she went off the road into the subankment. That's just what I wanted to hear, you know it? Well, perhaps someone's hurt, perhaps not. At any rate, they must have realized there's no traffic coming by now. They're on foot. But where? It's freezing out here, not a house around for miles. They took off in a snowstorm. Why don't we just hold off on the doomsday scenario for now? If they're on foot, we can trace them in the snow. Yeah, unless the wind's already covered it up. Well, we won't know until we look, will we? You know what I want to hear you write about now. I can just imagine. What are you going to do, though? Stand around here and threaten me all night, or are we going to find Carly and Isabella? What's it going to be? No, I'm right on your butt, Alamane. If anything happened to either one of those girls, like I said, there'd be no house around here for miles. It'd take them days to find your body. Oh, my God. Shit. It's dead. There's no phone. There's no phone. Yeah, which means nobody's here. It explains it. Wires must be down. I don't know. There must be an emergency generator to keep these lights on. So what are we going to do? We're going to sit tight for a while. What if the contractions start again? We're in a clinic. We have resources to deal with it now. You sound awfully sure. I am sure. Hey, look, you haven't had any real pain in a while, have you? No, I guess not. And if the contractions start again, I have access to the medication to stop it. Really? Really, I'll prove it to you. Look, woman at your stage of pregnancy, with your hypertension problems, the best choice to stop premature contractions would be it. Carly? Carly? Isabella? Isabella, come on. Okay, it's all right. Come on. You're starting to get it. I gotcha. Okay, okay. Don't forget to breathe. Let's do this again, all right? Yes. Oh, it hurts. Deep breath in. Deep breath in. Deep breath in. Deep breath in. Hurry. You're gonna be all right. Okay. Okay. Hurry, hurry. No. No. No. It's coming. The baby's coming. Oh, my God. This program proudly brought to you by Pertax, the true taste of India, the taste for Australia. Hey, come on in. Hold on just a minute, I gotta finish this up. Well, well, well. Gee, what time is it? My goodness, and she's still at the office. We are eating into your little social life, aren't we? For your information, Jack, I put in a hell of a lot of overtime for this company. Well, bully for you. Now, what do you want? I'm busy. I haven't got a lot of time to waste. Why do I take this kind of treatment from you? Particularly when I'm here to discuss something that will save your family a lot of embarrassment. I'm talking about your father and what's going on in his life. What's going on? Do you happen to know who he's taking to the Masquerade Ball? Well, not you, evidently. No, not me, Jack. And I'm very concerned that the person he is taking is going to make a fool of him. I'm talking about that nitwit, Liana Love. Now, surely as his son, you can do something to put an end to this nonsense. Dad? Got a minute? For you, my beauty, always. Come on in. So, what's in your mind? Tracy. Oh? Dad, look, I realize you've already talked to Jack, and I'm sure you're sworn to secrecy. But my every instinct tells me Tracy is pregnant. Ashley, why on earth would you think that your sister's pregnant? Because Tracy and I had a talk about Brad, the relationship, how things were going, progressing. I told her I thought she should step back, let Brad be the aggressor, give it some time, not rush things. And then she said she didn't have time. And to me, Dad, that means only one thing. Honey, look, I'm really very busy right now, and I'd rather not get into all of this. That is true. Daddy, look, there is a reason I need to know this. Dad just told me something that could have an impact on this entire situation. All right, Ash, you insist. What did he say? He said he's not ready to get married again. He knows how Tracy feels about him, but he just doesn't want to be married to anyone right now. And he doesn't want her reading more into this relationship than there is, and he's going to talk to her about it, Dad. God, that's going to crush your sister. That she is pregnant. Yes, Ash. Your sister is pregnant. Hungry, Trace? Um, yeah, I sure am. Well, that's a switch. What do you mean? You usually eat like a bird on this diet of yours. Oh, well, all things in moderation, Brad. I bet I can tempt you to indulge yourself tonight. You know, maybe you can. Maybe? I've got a feast here for you, young lady, my famous barbecued ribs. Oh, boy, there goes my diet. Well, not necessarily. I bought 15 and 14 for me. Oh, you're all heart. I'm just thinking of that gorgeous figure of yours. Well, that's good. You just keep thinking of that figure of mine. Well, I'm gonna start cooking these babies. Brad, we've really had a great summer, haven't we? Yeah, super. I don't know what I would have done without you. You missed your cue. What do you mean? You're supposed to say, I don't know what I would have done without you either. Well, you know that's true. Um, it doesn't mean I don't want to hear it. Tracey, it's been wonderful spending time with you this summer. I mean, you've been terrific company. You made this summer really special. And maybe we can make the fall even better. You know we're not gonna get many more nights like this, are we? No, I guess not. We're gonna have to move inside pretty soon. Well, there's always dinner by the fire. I won't be wearing a bathing suit, but we can find some other ways to show off my figure. You know, you have come a long way from that shy, introverted girl I used to know. You're becoming a very aggressive woman. Is that unattractive? No, not at all. She looks so beautiful, so filled with expectations. How do I tell her I'm just not ready for marriage right now? No matter how I say it, she's gonna be heard. I've got to tell her tonight. I have to tell him about the baby. I just can't wait any longer. I know he cares for me. When we were married, he wanted a child so much. Now I can give him that child. I have to believe he's going to be as happy about this as I am. And I have to tell him tonight. Nina, honey, look what I found in this old magazine. There's an article in here about this fabulous mass grade ball in Atlanta last year. Doesn't it look like fun? Look, honey. Yeah, it does. Looks like it. Were you on the phone just a little while ago? I mean, I thought I heard you talking to somebody. No, I was sleeping. I must have been talking in my sleep. Did you have another dream, honey? Yeah, a bad one. Was it about that ex-husband of yours? Yeah. Nina, I want you to talk to somebody. No, I'm fine, Mom. I just need to relax. I need to...just to get my head together a little bit. I'm fine. What you need, honey, is to have some fun. And this mass grade ball coming up is just the ticket. I've been thinking about that, Mom. I don't think I'm gonna go. Not go to the biggest party the whole year? I'm just not in the mood anymore, you know? I don't have a date, and I'm tired of being the third wheel with Crick and Danny all the time. Well, I don't have a date either. Well, that's different, though. You make friends more easily. You're gonna meet all kinds of neat people at the ball. Well, it won't be the same without you. Yeah, it will be. You'll have a great time. I'm just gonna spend a nice, quiet evening with my son. Well, if that's the way you want it. Yeah, it is. I want you to go and have a wonderful time. I'll be fine. Well, you can always change your mind and come with me if you want. I know, Ma. Thanks. Listen, I'm gonna go down to that costume shop because I want to see what they've got in stock. Okay, I'll see you. You know, that means I can't call you a bride anymore. Oh, great. Just an old married lady. Oh, Penny, it's okay. Starting here Starting now Oh, wait. Let it ring. It's ringing. It's ringing. It's ringing. It's ringing. It's ringing. It's ringing. It's ringing. It's ringing. It's ringing. It's ringing. So daddy's taking Liana to this charity masquerade ball, huh? Yes, can you believe it? Unless you can get through to him somehow and keep it from happening. Tell me, Jill, why in the world would I want to do something like that? Surely you're not comfortable with your father taking Liana to the masquerade ball. Dad is a big boy, Jill. He's gonna have to make this decision on his own. Jack, he's not thinking straight. Okay. Why is that? Well, now, maybe I'm missing something here. What exactly is going on between your father and that blonde bimbo? I know that's the way you look at Liana. There is a lot more competent person there than you give her credit for. I think she is certifiable. Well, maybe that's why she relates so well to the rest of the world. Jack, this isn't funny. I know this is very serious business for you, Jill. Look, look, look, look. I didn't come here to talk about Liana, all right? It is your father I'm worried about. How much is he seeing of Liana? Why is this suddenly of such great urgency to you? Because I don't want to see him hurt. I don't want to see him taken advantage of. And because there's a lot more going on with this woman than you may be aware of. Like what? Jack, she is a devious little witch. And if your father gives her an opening, she will take advantage of him, I promise you. I get the feeling you're talking about something specific now. My instincts tell me there's a bond forming between them before my eyes. Between your father and a brainless... No, I will say this again. She is not brainless. She has a few unconventional ideas. I will give you that. She is not brainless. When it comes to business, this woman is as cagey as any lady you're going to find. I'm talking about her show. I'm talking about her column. I'm just going to lay it on the line here. Is your father sleeping with Liana? Does he have a sexual relationship with her? Tracy's pregnant. Ashley, now you mustn't say a word about this to anyone. Your sister confided in me. And she doesn't want anybody to know about this, particularly Brad. Why not? Because she didn't want him feeling trapped. As if she planned this pregnancy to get him to marry her. It's only natural she would rather he marry out of love than duty. Well, maybe now you can understand why she was so threatened when you separated from Victor. Honey, Tracy has a great deal at stake in this relationship. She truly wants to remarry this man. But not if he doesn't as much as she does. Which may be the case if Brad's serious about not wanting to get married again. Dad, look, they're having dinner tonight. Do you think Tracy will open up about this baby? Well, I know she was thinking of getting into it with him the other night, but obviously something happened to stop her. Daddy, I can imagine what she must be going through. She wants to tell him she wants it to be the right moment. She doesn't know how he'll react. Yes. And no idea he's about to drop such a bombshell. I just hope that when they put their cars on the table Tracy goes first. Hello. Cricut, you're home. Nina, hi. It took you a long time to answer. Were you in the middle of something? Uh, not what you're thinking. Yeah, I'll bet. So what's up? Well, I just thought I'd let you know. Um... I'm not going to the masquerade ball after all. You're not? Why? I'm just not in the mood. All this costume business, everybody hiding behind disguises. But Nina, you were looking forward to it. I know, but I think you guys should go alone for once without me tagging along. That's ridiculous. We want you to go with us. I know. Thank you. You're a good friend, Cricut. But I'm just not in the mood. Look, I gotta go, okay? So I'll talk to you later. Okay. Bye. A new champ tonight on sale. Ashley, did Brad seem committed to this idea of staying single for a while? Oh, Dad, I wish I could say otherwise, but yes, he did. Well, it's hard to understand. He inherited a great deal of wealth. Not to mention a whole new company. He's still considering the merger with Newman Enterprises. Victor and Brad meet on it weekly to sort it out. Well, it's like he's starting a whole new life. That's what he's always wanted, Daddy, remember? A chance to excel at his own business. Oh, yes, honey, and I'm very happy for him. I mean, the young man has been like a son to me. But I also remember how much he wanted children and how devastated he was when Tracy lost their first child. Now, the fact that she's pregnant just might make a tremendous difference to him. Do you really think that might change his mind about not wanting to be married? That's all we have to hope for. Dad, I just hope that if he does ask Tracy to marry him, it's because he really wants to. Daddy, if Tracy feels he's doing it because he's obligated... She'll never go through with it. Brad, please be happy about this baby. Tracy is counting on you more than you know. Okay. All right, Tracy, you ready for these ribs? Um, Brad, before we get started, could we talk for a minute? There's something that I want to discuss with you. Sure. Sounds serious. What is it? Brad, this has been the most wonderful summer of my life. And the year that I spent in New York, well, I wasn't quite sure what kind of relationship we would have when I came back home. And it's really been more than I could have expected. It's been just like old times. Yeah, I know what you mean. And some of the most wonderful, the most memorable moments that we've spent were when we were making love. It's really brought back some very incredible memories. I'm not sure we should have let it go that far. Well, I am. And when I tell you what I have to say, I think you'll be as surprised as I was. Surprised by what? Uh... Brad... I'm pregnant. Pregnant? I didn't mean for it to happen. I want you to know that in no way did I plan this or mean to force you into any kind of marriage. How far along are you? Two months. Brad, remember when we were married, how badly we wanted a child? We both did, and, well, I know the circumstances are very different now, but now I can give you that child. Brad, you're going to be a father. Whew. Well, I'm not sure I can do that. Well, I'll be darned. You're not angry with me? I'm blown away, Tracey. Well, that's certainly understandable. How long have you known about this? A few weeks. Why didn't you tell me? I wanted to, but I was so afraid that you would think I was using the baby to trap you. Tracey, come on. I would never think that you'd do something like that. Sweetheart, this is incredible. And you know how I've always felt about kids. Maybe this didn't happen the way we would have planned it, but the important thing is you and I are going to have a child. I'm going to be a dad. Tracey? Tracey? What were you just now? You seemed like you were a million miles away. No, Brad, not quite that far. Jimmy? Oh, friends. Oh, come here. I've got the biggest surprise for you. Well, where's my surprise? Look at these pictures, Jimmy. His and her costumes from a masquerade ball they had in Atlanta last year. Isn't that really fabulous? It's very nice. Anthony and Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI, Bonnie and Clyde, and my personal favorite, Adam and Eve. They look a little chilly to me. I stopped by a costume shop on the way over here, and guess what I found? What? The perfect his and her costume for us to wear, Tarzan and Jane. I'll be the envy of every woman there. Florence, what are you talking about? The masquerade ball. I have an extra ticket. Oh, Jimmy, now you've just got to take me. You have to. What was that all about? Nina's decided that she's not going to go to the masquerade ball after all. Why not? Well, she gave me the impression she doesn't want to be a third wheel. You're going with us? What's crazy? Honey, I know. I told her the same thing, but she wouldn't budge. Somehow she got the idea that she's always interrupting us. You mean the way she interrupted our romantic dance? Yeah, well, she's my closest friend. She can't help it if her timing isn't always the best. Do you think there's some other reason why she doesn't want to go? I think she's still freaked out about the dream she's having. She's still having nightmares about David trying to kill her? Yeah, and they're awful. Believe me, I'm having them too. Honey, David is dead, all right? He can't hurt you or Nina. And you too, you've got to start putting this behind you. Well, that's easier said than done. This has got to be the worst year of Nina's life. I know, but sitting on home brooding over David isn't going to help anything. She's got to go out. She's got to be with people, have some fun. I know. If there were only some man that we knew that could take her to the ball. You think she'd go? Well, she wouldn't feel like she was tagging along with us. What about one of the guys in the band? Uh, I don't know. I don't think so. I mean, I don't think a masquerade ball is her style. All right, well, we've got to think. Let me get that. Ah, let me think. Hello? Oh, great, yeah, send him out. It's John Silva. He called earlier, said he wanted to stop by. Maybe he knows somebody she could go with. John Silva! John Silva! He'd be perfect. Why don't we think of him? You think he would go? It can't hurt to ask. What the heck? Okay. Joe, my father does not fill me in on all of his amorous adventures. Then it's possible he is sleeping with Leanna. Look, she's an invigorating, captivating woman. She's young, she's vital. Would you stop that? Why is everyone always talking about how young she is? She's not that many years younger than I am. And as for vital, I'm not exactly out to pasture in my rocking chair yet. I suppose that's true. You suppose that's true? Jack, the woman is a flake. She is totally unpredictable. You never know what she's going to do next. Maybe that's the attraction. But your father, your father is a conservative, respected, major corporate figure. Now, how does it look for him to be running around with a woman like that? What will it do to his image? Frankly, I find the idea rather captivating. I can't believe you're saying that. Come on, she's a very interesting woman. Who knows? Maybe she'll keep the old guy looking younger. Yeah? Or maybe she will make him a total laughing stock. Have you ever thought of that? This is Channel 9. Tom. Hi, Danny. How's it going? Good. How are you doing? Good. You wanted to see me? Yes. The police just sent over a report on a suspect they picked up. Six foot one, 180 pounds, Caucasian dark curly hair scar over his left eye. That sounds like him. The man who mugged Mrs. Coleridge. Yep. I thought you'd want to see that right away. Well, are they going to put him in a lineup? Yeah, in a couple of hours. You know, if Mrs. Coleridge could positively identify this guy, we may be able to stop at least one of these creeps who preys on the elderly. Well, I'm going to call her and see if she wants me to go down to the station with her. Thank you so much for bringing this over. Sure. So, how's everything going with you two? Well, we had a little bad news. Oh, yeah? What's that? Nina's decided not to go to the masquerade ball after all. Really? Well, that's too bad. Why not? She feels awkward, like a third wheel going with us. We tried to tell her not to feel that way, that all her friends will be there, but she doesn't want to go without an escort. Yeah, and it's really too bad, because this is exactly what she needs. She needs to get out in the world, see people, have some fun. No matter what we said, we just could not persuade her to change her mind. Yeah. It's just a shame that we can't find someone that could go with her. Yeah. Who are you going with? Oh, I'm going stag. Wow. Really? Well, then I have a terrific idea. Now, Florence, I'd love to take you to that masquerade ball, but you're forgetting something. What, Jimmy? I can't go that night. I told you that. Well, I know you did, but I thought if you saw these pictures, how much fun it was going to be. No, I just can't take you. I have other plans. Well, can't you put them off to another time? Please, Jimmy, please. Florence, I've been working on this a long, long time. It's very important to me. You can't imagine how important it is to me, to my future, and to ours. It's just all going to happen that night. That's why I can't take you. I just can't. I'm sorry, Jimmy. I didn't mean to put a lot of pressure on you, you know? It's just that when Nina told me she wasn't going to go, I got so excited because I had another ticket. Well, you just can't blame a girl for trying. What did you just say? Can't blame a girl for trying. No, about Nina? Well, she's decided not to go. That's why I've got the other ticket. She's not going. You sure? Well, that's what she said. Why? You look like you're upset. No, I'm just disappointed. Well, why? You're not even going to be there. No, but you are, and I know how much you'd want to share that with your daughter. So why isn't she going to go? Well, she was going to go with Danny and Cricket, but she thought three's a crowd. But I think she's a little depressed because she's been having these horrible dreams lately about that monster husband of hers. David Kimball. The husband from hell. Whenever I think about that creep, it makes my blood boil. Yeah, I know what you mean, because when I think of Nina and David Kimball, it gets me real hot under the collar. Listen, I've got to go. You've got the questions, we've got the answers. At over 250 carpet court stores nationwide. I've just got to know it's right. And there's Pinocchio on them. Because they've released Pinocchio on video. How do you know all this? I'm a mind reader. Yeah, we'll read this. You're a very strange woman. Hi, it's me. Aren't you ready yet? I like it by my jeans. Have you tried tight in your room? You mean you didn't notice? So what's this then? They're my Libra Flur. I mean, what are they doing in my jeans? Well, they weren't any pockets in your jacket. Wait for me, wait for me! Dad, you busy? Oh, never too busy for you, my boy. Well, I was gonna kinda ask you the same thing. Didn't you be more specific? Guess you're making big plans to go to this charity masquerade ball, huh? Well, aren't you going? Well, my life's kinda up in the air right now. Oh, of course. What am I thinking? With Nicky being away and all... Yeah, who knows? I may even go solo. Haven't really thought about it. Rumor hath it that you've got a date with Leanna Love. Rumor hath it that you've got a date with Leanna Love. Rumor hath it that you've got a date with Leanna Love. Really? Now, where on earth did you hear that? Now, where on earth did you hear that? As if I have to ask. You probably don't. I will say I was surprised to hear it. Why? She's a respected lady, a fine businesswoman? Why? She's a respected lady, a fine businesswoman? Why? She's a respected lady, a fine businesswoman? Yes, that's true, but is she the right lady for you? What do you mean? Well, Dad, she's an interesting woman, no doubt about it, but... She's flighty, she's unpredictable, she's... She's flighty, she's unpredictable, she's... All right, Jack. Okay, let's hear it all, let's hear all the indictments. No, these are not indictments, Dad. I'm just wondering if she's the right woman for your image. Oh, why don't you let me worry about my image? Oh, why don't you let me worry about my image? Come on, Dad, you know what kind of world we live in. People always talk, there is always gossip. People always talk, there is always gossip. And I have never been one to worry about those things. This is just my point, you don't worry. Maybe this time you should. Jack, for heaven's sakes, I am taking the woman to a masquerade ball, Jack, for heaven's sakes, I am taking the woman to a masquerade ball, not to the altar, and I am trying to make a point with Jill, not to the altar, and I am trying to make a point with Jill, which I'm sure is where all of this is coming from. which I'm sure is where all of this is coming from. So there's nothing to this whole thing with you and Leanna. So there's nothing to this whole thing with you and Leanna. I did not say that. I happen to enjoy Leanna's company very much. She's a great deal of fun to be with, she's young, free-spirited, and of course she's unpredictable, and I happen to find that quite charming. Now, let's not make any assumptions. Now, let's not make any assumptions. I intend to fully enjoy my time with Leanna Love and let the chips fall, so you do not have to worry about your dad. and let the chips fall, so you do not have to worry about your dad. You have any idea what you might be getting into? You have any idea what you might be getting into? No, I'm not sure I do. No, I'm not sure I do. But it just might be the time of my life. But it just might be the time of my life. Be careful, Dad. This lady's got some weird ideas. You really don't know, Nina, socially, do you? You really don't know, Nina, socially, do you? I spend a lot of time with her as her attorney. I spend a lot of time with her as her attorney. That's anything but social. John, she's a wonderful friend. You'd have so much fun. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Why are you telling me all this? Because within a half an hour, my best friend calls and says she's not going to the masquerade ball because she has no escort. Yeah, and then a great friend walks in and announces he's going solo. I think I'm beginning to understand what's going on here. I think I'm beginning to understand what's going on here. Well, what do you think? It's not the worst idea, is it? Well, what do you think? It's not the worst idea, is it? John, it'd be more fun for both of you if you went with someone. John, it'd be more fun for both of you if you went with someone. But if she thinks we had anything to do with this, she's not going to go. It's got to be your idea. Right, so we're counting on you. You know, when you two get going, you're quite a team, you know that? Does that mean you'll do it? Not a bad idea. I'll stop by Nina's on my way home and I'll ask her. John, that's wonderful. You'll have a great time. It'll mean so much to her. What's wrong? The little bitch. She never stops. You know, no matter what I do, no matter how carefully I plan, she always manages to screw it up. Who? Nina. She's ruined everything again. It's big, Australian, and people travel the world for the experience. Music There's nothing like it in Australia. I had everything planned. The last crucial step is just to get her to this masquerade ball so I can put an end to this thing once and for all. What happened? Oh, she's not going. She's decided she doesn't want to tag along with Danny and Cricket. Oh, you mean she's not going because she doesn't have a date? Oh, I don't know. She's having nightmares. She's depressed. About you? Well, she hasn't seen the worst of me yet. Oh. I'm going to make her pay. Music So, did I oversell my famous ribs? Oh, Brad, the ribs were incredible. At least the one you let me have. Oh, that's really nice. I offered. Ha ha. Just kidding. You know, actually, you hardly touched any of your food. What's with you? Well, the food was all incredible. I just was not as hungry as I thought. Um, can I get you an afternoon drink? Oh, no, thank you. The lemonade is just fine. You know, not that you're ever much of a drinker, but you haven't even had a glass of wine. I mean, all you've been drinking is, uh, mineral water, lemonade, diet soda. What's going on? Well, actually, there's a reason for that. Yeah, I know, I know. The calories, the calories. You know, I'm not going to lie. The calories, the calories. No, not exactly. Um, Tracy, there's something I want to talk to you about. That's funny. I was just about to say the same thing to you. Well, this is pretty important. I think I should go first. Um, if you don't mind, I think I better go first. And I don't know what I have to say, I think you'll understand why. Okay. Ladies first. Okay. Brad, um, the year that I spent in New York, I had a lot of time to think about things, to reflect on some mistakes that I had made. Like letting our divorce go through. Tracy, that's all behind us now. Yes, I know that. I know that all too well, Brad. I came home to find out if you and I had a future together, if there was some way we could put our lives back together. And I know that I haven't been very subtle about it. I hope I haven't been a nuisance. No, of course not. Brad, this has been a summer that I will never forget. A summer when I feel you and I have become closer than we ever were before. We have shared some very special moments. Moments in each other's arms, making love. Listen, Tracy, I never should have let that happen. It wasn't fair. No, no, I'm glad that it happened. Brad, I'm glad that we made love. And I'm thrilled about what it's brought to my life. Before you go any further, I... No, Brad, please don't stop me now. The moments that we spent together, that you and I made love, were very special and very beautiful. And an incredible thing has happened as a result. What do you mean? What are you saying, Tracy? I'm saying that I'm not going to be able to make love to you and you. I'm not going to be able to make love to you and you. I'm saying that I'm pregnant. You and I are going to have a baby. She knows better than to head off without saying anything. What are you doing? Taking some photos, huh? Just stuff the things around here so I can send them to Uncle Mark. If you run into him, tell him I want to see you, huh? Sure. Dad? Yeah? I thought I might take a walk. So is it okay if I'm late for dinner? Not too late though, yeah. About seven maybe? Yeah, all right. Blue should take a leaf out of your book. What do you mean? Ask first. Sorry Skip, he can't come. It's undercover work and you need to make me stand out. Okay? I thought I might find you here. I told you not to do it, Luke. Mr. Gorman's trying to hurt us. Leave it to me. It's a good idea. Yeah, but... Just because I thought of it. Yeah, I told you it was dangerous then. I still think it's dangerous now. Maybe if I get caught. Well, yeah. Hello. Oh, it's absolutely gorgeous. Yeah, the colors and patterns, you've got to see it to believe it. Oh, it feels like walking through a tropical paradise. Oh, I could stay here forever. It's spellbinding. No family should miss us. Teach us to pray. Please just wait and look after him. Well, there's another hour before closing. Let's go see the Wild West Show. Hold it right there, Ned. Get him, Marguerite. That's Sanders. Glad he started the fire. Yeah, you'd better put a hat on, too. You'll ruin everything if it's thrown out. It's so hard to... One, please. That didn't happen. It has to be closed. That doesn't matter. It's a big thing. I don't know why Herman and the old battle-heads don't just give up. How can they hope to compete with an operation like this? Well, some people are just too stupid to realize when they're beaten. Oh, Phil? You haven't seen Lou, have you? Yes, I saw her heading off with Chris. You keep an eye on it. It takes up. Oh, good. You know, it's funny. What? Well, first Lou just disappears, then Jerry takes off without Skippy. You ask me, they're acting a bit strange. Well, maybe this trouble is while Gorman is getting at them. Hey, what's going on here? It's up for the morning, mate. What do you do? What? Some work on the main, got to dig up the drive. But this is the only entrance. Our customers won't be able to park. I don't make the orders. Gorman. I don't understand. What? Mr. Gorman's got all this, and he wants to take Habitat away from us. Why's he so greedy? Some people just are. Things would be so much better if people stopped being greedy. Well, I can't talk. I made the animals sick for money. If you stopped, you were worried about your mum's hospital bills. Well, this had better work, or I don't know how I'll ever tell Phil about it. What's the time? Better find a place to hide. Thank you. Bye-bye. What are you doing here? You ought to be over at the canteen catching mice. Come on. How about I get you a nice bowl of milk? Okay, let's go. Your dad's gonna kill me if he gets you mixed up in this. No, he won't, not if we get the evidence. What if I call him? He won't, but he's always with. What are you doing here? What are you doing here? All right, we should be okay in here. I don't know what could have happened. What are you doing? What are you doing? Kate said they were treating the animals bad, so I thought if I got some photos of it... Prove it to the RSPCA so Gorman has so much trouble he wouldn't have time to hassle your dad and Thelma, right? Hey, how did you know that? Because that's why we're here. It's happened again, hasn't it? Yeah. Sometimes we think the same. At the same time. I think it's because we're twins. Most times we tell each other. This time we didn't. You didn't. Nor did you. It's not Lou's fault. I've got some private hassles connected with this that I asked to keep to myself. All right? So what's your excuse? Well, I didn't want to bring you, just in case I got caught. Well, you're both here now. Look, if we're gonna do this, let's do it before beating the place where we swam in with keepers. Get some shots of the horse. Look. You're gonna get me. No one sees it here, so they think it doesn't matter. You're things. They make him pull a cart that's too heavy for him. They stick him in here when he's not working. Isn't there any feed for him? Yeah, they figure what groceries should be enough. Anything to save money. I think we've got what we came for. Yeah. I'll teach you, you mongrel. Hey, what are you doing here? Hey, Rose! All of you more forget the bonus. That's what's important. Interns in section six, the young girl headed for section five exit. Hey, Rose, you're not going to get away with this. You're not going to get away with this. You're not going to get away with this. You're not going to get away with this. You're not going to get away with this. You can't go to section five exit. Right. You better come with me. Look, why waste my time with a few youngsters? I just wondered if we should press charges. Will they do any damage? Nothing I can see. They seem like nice kids. Well, look, we'll just tick them off and let them go. I was hoping you'd say that. Second thoughts. Enya. First, there was the extraordinary album Watermark. Then the magical Shepherd Moons. Now comes the long-awaited digitally remastered album in this wonderful trilogy. Enya, The Celts. Enya, The Celts. A truly remarkable album. Get it now. Oh, it's absolutely gorgeous. Yeah, the colors and patterns. You've got to see it to believe it. Oh, it feels like walking through a tropical paradise. Oh, I could stay here forever. It's spellbinding. No family should miss it. And at the Cockatoo Haven Diner, there's an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord and ice cream dessert bar at very affordable prices. Butterfly House. Just up the freeway at Murray Bridge. It's brilliant. Oh, my God. Music. The same old boring breakfast. Day in, day out. Wouldn't you like something different for a change? Kellogg's Miniweeds. They're unlike anything you've tasted before. Delicious bite-sized parcels of whole wheat filled with real fruit. The usual for breakfast. Not anymore. Cool. Kellogg's Miniweeds. Put the life back into your breakfast. Music. It seemed like a good idea at the time. They took the film. They did it all for nothing. Who's there? He's the crook. We were only trying to help. I know, sweetheart. Are we going to get in trouble with the police? That's for your dad and Mr. Gorman to sort out. Music. Why should I keep the police out of it? Your kids are thieves and vandals. They didn't do any damage and they certainly didn't take anything. That's their story. I'm sure we'll find that they did. I hear young Chris's mother's sick. I wonder what the shock of this will do to her. There is a way out of it though that doesn't involve the police. They can put money in your pockets. What, sell? I'll pay the original price. And I'm sure I could have offered less in the circumstances. You're like Gorman. It's about as low as you can get. You can start again if you sell. But what if you don't? Once a kid's tied with a brush like this. Well, guys, we accept the fact that you thought you were helping. And unfortunately it was the opposite. And it might have seemed like a bit of an adventure at the time. The trespassing is breaking the law. And Gorman's threatening to make it look like it was even more than just trespassing. Gay, just let me finish. Now, Thela and I have been talking about it and Gorman's got us over a barrel. Seems we don't have a choice. We're selling him the park. We should have left it to the grown-ups. Yeah. Don't worry, Skip. We'll let your friends go if we have to sell. Yeah, and we won't let that Gorman hurt any of them. I wish I could go back and get my camera. I don't think about it. They may give Gorman a hassle, but they wouldn't stop him. No, we've done enough damage, I reckon. Especially me, eh, Skip? I better tell Thela the whole story. Have to sometime, I guess. What's he gonna tell Thela? Tell you later. Grace! Is it okay, Thela? Yeah, it's good. Now, this man... You say he paid you to put something in the animal's feed, and when you tried to stop, he set fire to the stables and threatened to implicate you. I shouldn't have said yes in the first place. You should not have said yes in the first place. You say nothing of making all the animals sick. I know. He stopped as soon as he saw what he was doing to them. Yeah. Well, there's something to be said for that. This man, Sanders, you say you've seen him with Gorman? Yeah. Yeah, well, I think I'd better tell Sonny. Why didn't you tell us before? We could have done something about it. So, what happened? Well, Thel was pretty upset. Why did Thel get mad at him? Sort of. Dad would think they should tell the police. Maybe they'd have sort things out. Yeah, maybe. Don't you think so? It's just Chris's word. But they've got to believe him. I wondered where you got to today. Come on. Hey. What's this? Meow. Lou Hamer. Hello there. It's you, isn't it? Larry. Oh, look. It's one of those security guards from yesterday. What's he doing here? Oh, my. Hi, kids. That's my camera. Yeah, I took the liberty of getting the photos developed. I hope you don't mind. You little beauties. Excellent. Dad, Dad, everything's going to be all right. What? Everything's going to be all right. How do I know why the police are trying to contact you, Sanders? I'm about to close the Habitat deal. Okay, let's get the show on the road. You're ruining your kids' futures, Hammond. Oh, you think so? You think photos of a few mistreated animals will stop me? Well, if the RSPCA don't, I'm sure the police will. It's his word against Saunders. I'll just say you made it all up. It's to stop me pressing charges against the kids. Oh, then there's our surprise witness, sir. Brian Morrissey, one of your security guards. Now, he's prepared to say the kids didn't damage or steal anything. He'll change his story when he knows his job is on the line. And a big fat bonus. Everyone's got his prize, Hammond. Not me, Mr. Goldman. Those photos made me see the way things are at the park. I noticed a few things, but I hadn't realized the full extent of it. You'll never make those charges against the kids stick now. So why would we make up stories against your friend Saunders? You'd better hope he can stand up under interrogation. Now, that's the kind of headline I like. Why are you putting it up there? For posterity, mate. What's that? Their future. It's there so we can crow over it every time we go past. Bill, Chris is here to say goodbye. Oh, you didn't have to do that. Oh, you shouldn't. Hey, I wanted to. Oh. You don't have to go. You were good to me and I let you down. No, you made up for it. Thanks, Phil, but that doesn't matter now. You keep in touch, okay? Okay. Good luck, mate. See you. Bye, Chris. Bye. This is so you don't forget me. Good luck. Look out for Skip. Hi. It's a diary. Oh, it's lovely. Why did you think I was stupid? I know you liked Chris. I remember my first crush. I was about your age and he was 15. He didn't even know I existed. I still felt like he was my boyfriend. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I still felt like he was my boyfriend. Hey, honey, there's a little something I've been meaning to tell you. When my baby spread mad I didn't spray so good I didn't have the peanut taste The peanut butter showed I feel so oily, baby I feel so oily There's plenty of imitators, but nothing's as good as the original Kraft peanut butter. It's never oily and it's never dry. I was glad I was chosen to be a school crossing monitor because it really is a very important job. We're responsible for the safety of children crossing the road. Music Hey, look who's here. Engine starts Hi, Brian. How are you? I brought a friend to meet you. And this is Simmo. I'd have never found the camera if it hadn't been for him. I smuggled him out and he's paid. Well, you're a real hero, Simmo. Listen, mate, I'll call you down for us if you want any work around. No, thanks, I'm fine. I got talking to one of the RSPCA blokes and he's offering me a job tracking down creeps like Gorman. That's great. He's chasing kids around Wally World. Looks like everyone ended up fine except for Gorman and his scally mate. Looks like it. What do you reckon, Simmo? I'm sorry. I guess this is the beginning. It's sad because Chris has gone away, but I'm glad I met him and I'll never forget him. I'm gonna do what he says and write down all the adventures we have with Skippy. Hello. What are you doing here? I've been looking all over for you. You wouldn't understand. There's times when I prefer to be alone. Well, that's OK. And that means I get your share. My share of what? Well, Phil baked the chocolate cake and Kate brought over some super-swell ice cream that Dad said had got to find you before he died. Well, what are we waiting for? Race you home. Come on. Come on. Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! The bush can't go wrong. Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! The bush can't go wrong. Skippy! Skippy! Skippy! Our friend never true. Skippy! Our friend never true. Carl. Yo, man, you ever feel like you was being watched? All the time. When you look this good, you have to get used to it. And when you talk that stupid, you have to get used to this. Come here. Come here. See that dude over there? He's been scoping me ever since he got in here. I think he's a cop. Turn yourself in, will you? I'm not a cop. I'm a cop. I think he's a cop. Turn yourself in, will you? It's the only way. You're right. You're right. Wait a minute. I ain't do nothing. Hey. What's up, man? Can I get you something? No, I'm fine, sir. Um, uh, if you need... So is he a cop? He's my father. Now this is a story all about how My life got flipped, turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute and just sit right there I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air In West Philadelphia.
