Good evening and Merry Christmas and what would this time of year be without a story of a Christmas miracle. For a young Surrey family Christmas will always hold a special significance for this year they received the greatest gift of all the gift of life. Rob and Elizabeth Stevens were told their newborn son Peter probably wouldn't make it to the new year after being born with a collapsed lung and defective heart. But not only has Peter defied the odds and survived a last chance round of surgery but it looks like he's on the road to recovery. Andrew, Andrew look this is from Lyndon Soles and his family. Rob and Elizabeth Stevens and three-year-old Andrew arrived home from Edmonton last night all the excitement of unwrapping Christmas gifts take second place to the big news about baby Peter. We thought it was gonna be a real dim Christmas when we went up on Monday afternoon to talk to all the doctors they sat us down and they were all there when the director Dr. Finer sat down talked to us and told us that right now we don't think that he was going to live but we'd like to do this one last surgery to try to help. Yesterday baby Peter went through five hour surgery he's now on a heart-lung machine the family is euphoric about the sudden change for the good. As she said the surgery was a success Mr. Stevens he's improving. While I just kind of dropped the phone I didn't know what else to do I was just so enthused with the fact that he's going to be alright. So while young Andrew is the center of attention everyone's thoughts and prayers are with little Peter. When they phoned me yesterday morning I was so tickled. Everybody in this apartment was concerned about the baby every time I met them they said how was the baby doing. It is a miracle and it's one of the best presents we could ever wish for. Grandpa Peter is a country western singer who devotes a lot of time entertaining seniors and sick kids composing songs about dreams and hope. Little Andrew met his baby brother for the first time yesterday and he brought home baby Peter's special gift for grandpa. And we have a quick addition to that story we spoke with Rob Stevens just a short time ago and he told us that Peter has now been taken off the heart-lung machine and is only on a ventilator and so far he seems to be doing just fine. Twelve people aboard a vessel named Ducky's Boy have a lot to be thankful for this Christmas. All were rescued last night by a passing boat when their craft began taking on water in high winds just south of Prince Rupert. They were later transferred to a Canadian Coast Guard cutter and taken to shore. Things are starting to return to normal after two Burlington Northern Freight train derailments in Washington State this week. Interstate 90 has been reopened near Spokane after three rail cars tumbled off a trestle over the highway yesterday. One of the derailed cars barely missed a Greyhound bus and a car. Luckily there were no injuries. And on Monday another Burlington Northern Freight train jumped the tracks 50 kilometers north of Seattle. One car loaded with butane caught on fire forcing officials to evacuate about a hundred nearby residents. All were able to return home in time for Christmas. The telephone lines are unusually busy this time of year with friends and relatives calling one another with Christmas greetings. But one Lower Mainland man is especially hopeful he'll be able to reach out and touch the love of his life. Problem is he doesn't know her name. Seems the two met on a flight from the Okanagan last week and it was love at first sight. Now the search to find her is on. She was kind of looking at me and I was kind of looking at her and then they called us to go on the airplane. And that's where the story begins. They flirted with each other during the flight but they didn't talk. There was a mutual attraction but he froze. He says he came desperately close to falling in love but he's not giving up. He started an all-out search so he placed an ad in the paper. Just a lot of eye contact and there was really nothing we said to each other. I think we both wanted to say something to each other but we just never got around to it. Yes you're with AirBC aren't you? Listen I don't know if you can help me or not. I came back from a flight on December the 16th from Kelowna to Vancouver. Flight 1521. There was only six people on that plane and is there any way I can find out a passenger's name on that plane? You're not. But it's not to be. The airline can't give him her name and that means he's spending this Christmas hoping and looking for love and passersby at Kitts Beach are rooting him on. It's kind of be thrilling too I suppose if someone pursues you that much then they've got a lot of gusto and they've got a lot of probably have a lot of big capacity for love. Well I'd be flattered but I think he was nuts. He has to go with his intuition. It's absolutely essential. Why? This is what happened to me. I was on a bus in Montreal. I couldn't speak French and this woman couldn't speak English and there was something there and she got off the bus and I walked after her and I said I can't let this person get away and so I said excusez-moi mademoiselle and my worst French and eventually drew pictures to each other and six years later we got married. Did you think he was crazy? No in fact I was hoping that something would happen there so it was... Chemistry of the heart. Yes chemistry. There's something there that tells me deep down inside I have to find her and I'm not gonna give up. What if you don't find her? If I don't find her well I guess I've never really thought about that because I always think I'm gonna find her. I just I think I'm gonna find her. I know it's only been a couple weeks but I'm not gonna give up. I'm gonna find her. We'll take a short break and be back with more news sports and weather right after this. It's becoming ever more difficult to surround oneself with absolute uncompromising quality which is why I take such extraordinary pleasure in telling you about Schweppes with its unique Schweppevesenssel and distinctively refreshing taste it may be the last oasis of true excellence in an otherwise vast desert of compromise. from everybody at bctv and now it's time for a look at sports and here's bernie thank you jennifer football will be high on the agenda of most sports fans in the next few weeks the national football league playoffs open on the weekend along with the usual flurry of u.s college ball games christmas in hawaii not too hard to take stanford and georgia tech were the opponents in the aloha bowl today stanford's tommy bardell ran for 104 yards in this game including a pair of touchdowns this one opened the scoring and georgia tech struck back just under four minutes later to tie the game quarterback sean jones hits michael smith for the touchdown ranked 17th in the country stanford got a solid outing from bardell this his second touchdown of the game but it wasn't enough to beat georgia tech in the hawaiian sunshine today as a touchdown with 14 seconds left by sean jones and a two-point conversion gave georgia tech the game and the aloha bowl today's other bowl game was in alabama this is the blue gray classic quarterback will furor of virginia tech combining with john brown the third for this touchdown it covered 44 yards the gray team scored a gain on its first possession of the second half the key play to a one-yard touchdown was this kickoff return by corey harris of vanderbilt he returns it 43 yards saw the 54th blue gray classic in montgomery alabama scott lockwood scored the lone touchdown for the blue squad they lose by eight points the coach of the year of the national football league is detroit lions wane fonts a panel of sports reporters gave fonts 26 votes that's one and a half more than washington's joe gibbs the lions will be making their first postseason appearance in eight years and quite a season they had a 12 and four regular campaign including eight straight wins at home gave detroit the nfc central championship it's great to have people think of you that way uh especially the road we took to get here but the most important to me is to be the coach of the year for this team uh have them feel that i that i've done my job because i feel that these are the players of the year hockey wise now a night off for all nhl teams the canucks return to practice tomorrow afternoon and prepare for a game friday at the coliseum against the philadelphia flyers and hockey fans in vancouver have had a lot to cheer about so far this season as the canucks have provided an entertaining style of play and we queried many of the fans for their christmas wish the proper christmas spirit is giving this season that's exactly what the canucks are doing for their fans and the fans in turn for the hockey club here the bells say i would grant the vancouver canucks eric glindros and that would take us over the edge that's what we need into the montreal zone along the blue line passes it off to larriana center if they score brink adams great goal it's my first hockey game so you know for them to yeah just kick butt i guess you could grant the canucks a christmas wish or a gift what would it be to win the stanley cup for the next five years for if every day could be just like christmas what a wonderful world this would be people like buray and linden you know they got to get more shots and they got it burry's got to stuff those uh breakaways he always gets and uh you think so oh yeah definitely oh yeah kill for shoots mcclean grabbed it another big save by cripp mcclean what do you think the canucks need for christmas uh win over montreal stanley cup yes on the cup why can't that feeling go on endlessly i have to finish ahead of the l.a king so they have money on them finishing ahead of kings this year i've lost past few years so i got to make it up this year i might say to my wish the canucks might be to have the same success on the ice as you're having in the tennis world no they want to have a hell of a lot better success than i'm having that's for sure but hopefully they'll win the games uh when we're playing the davis cup we can you know maybe they can some come see some of our tennis and you know we can go see some of the games so the canucks are grateful to their fans and show it by leading the smithe division standing this christmas day the fans gratitude well so far they sold out the coliseum nine times and the canucks at the christmas break have 20 wins 45 points only four teams in the nhl with more points the jets have a three-point lead on edmonton the kings and the flames tied at 31 and we have more on the canucks and to report on a special charitable project now to linden in deep it is set at the every time jeff cortnell scores a goal for the vancouver canucks a season bc's children's hospital benefits goals for kids is a program initiated by cortinal every time jeff scores he donates 250 six other corporate sponsors also contribute to the program a big part of my job is to score goals and help the team win and i think uh you know if i can also do something to help kids on the side it's a big thrill today jeff has scored 16 goals bringing the program total to just over 16 000 but linden kept it in there linden to the far circle cortinola scores greg adams was right in front of the net other nhl news the toronto maple leafs have been struggling all season it's no secret they missed the leadership qualities of wendell clark he's been on the injury shelf most of this season despite playing in just six games wendell clark remains one of the most popular members of the maple leafs number 17 crash bang style is one of the reason for his popularity and also the reason for spending so much time recovering from injuries after 34 and 37 goals in his first two seasons he saw action in only 81 games over the next three seasons because of recurring back problem this year he got off to a scorching start only to be shelved this time because of a knee injury and he has every right to say why me you have your good days and bad days but it's uh now you just you accept it as part of the game and work hard when you can and you need your time to rest you have to rest that's just part of the the game and you have to do it it's it's tough to do sometimes when you watch everybody else out there working hard and you're just sitting there watching it's you get frustrated because you don't think you're doing something that you know maybe there's something else you could be doing but uh bottom line is that you got to be healthy to play while his teammates enjoy the two-day christmas break wendell will work out alone at the gardens and vows not to return until he's 100 it didn't look as bad when we first injured it again and uh so they thought it'd come around quickly but it's something that uh i guess over time we've we found out we heard it worse than we did so it's it's just taking time it is uh nothing major it's just something that if you don't give time to heal it won't heal wendell isn't expected back until the new year the earliest would be december 30th at la colise in quebec city from hockey to basketball now in the nba two games were played this christmas day in an afternoon matchup it was the battle of los angeles the clippers against the lakers at the los angeles sports arena ac green had 20 points in this game and james worthy right here he contributed 14 a great tip the clippers had a 14 point afternoon from danny manning including points from this shot the lakers went on to win their 17th game of the season and the win was the first in four games for the los angeles lakers their record 17 and 10 the clippers are at 15 wins and 13 losses the other game was played tonight the chicago bulls at home had little trouble with the celtics scotty pippen had 27 points in this game larry bird had only eight points 14 below his season average this is bird in action for the boston celtics just eight points in this game tonight the bulls winning their 20th in their last 22 games michael jordan had 14 points and speaking of basketball the simon frazer university men's team in ontario they leave tomorrow for the ryerson basketball tournament and the women's team from simon frazer university also have a game in ontario and then they head to the behamas for a shootout tournament new year's day right through the eighth not a bad trip and we want to remind you the ubc hockey team will be hosting a tournament this weekend out at the winter sports center at ubc the first game will be saturday at four manitoba against traurier and saturday night at 7 30 ubc we'll play york that's our look at sports news our final continues with jennifer in just a couple of minutes uh coming to vancouver this january grand hotel you could win opening night tickets and a night in the royal suite watch with the gifts and traditional turkey dinner for others this time of year can also be one of stress and depression according to the crisis intervention and suicide prevention center in vancouver calls go up 20 between november and january loneliness is a big issue so students and teachers at new westminster secondary school got together last weekend to bring a little christmas cheer to some 250 people this is what we have to do with the broccoli too generous donations of cash and food allowed new westminster high school students and staff to organize a dinner in the school cafeteria over 150 people volunteered their time to help serve and prepare the traditional turkey dinner complete with all the trimmings enough gifts and toys were also collected to send out christmas hampers to needy families also in the new westminster community um already i've heard comments that that they're really pleased to be able to do this that it gives us such a good feeling to be able to contribute something positive at christmas time really this is what christmas is about i think a lot of people losing the christmas spirit and this is one way to bring it back by helping other people who are in need you know a lot of people right now are caring by volunteering their time and just helping out well if you're already planning new year's eve bc transit has a reminder for you it will be operating advantage of the free transportation well if you've passed through or by the front of the vancouver art gallery recently you probably noticed the elaborate christmas display of lights and decorations
