to the Southwest have struck up their vans. Tis the season to be jolly as fans from the Northwest and Midwest have traveled to help ring in the new year. CBS Sports is proud to present the Brute Sun Bowl, the Oregon State Beavers and the Missouri Tigers. Welcome to El Paso's Crown Jewel, the Brute Sun Bowl, glad to have you alongside today here on CBS. I'm Craig Bullerjack, and this game matches Red Hot Oregon State from the Pac-10 winners of their last three against the eight and four Missouri titles from the Big 12. Steve Berline joins me now here in El Paso, and hey, Oregon State turned the world upside down back in October with that upset win over USC. They can beat you many, many ways. You hit it exactly on the head, Craig. That USC game back in October, man, put them on the national map, but it was in the middle of an eight-game stretch where they won seven, and they won because of the balance in their offense. Quarterback Matt Moore, running back Evanston Bernard, and wide receiver Sammy Strotter. These are three guys that are making plays, but you start with the quarterback, Matt Moore. This is a guy who's been through all kinds of adversity. A tough season last year in 05, a two and three start this year, but he's realized he's got playmakers led by number 26, Evanston Bernard, a running back who's on the field every down. He is the most dependable, most reliable weapon on this team, but the guy that scares opposing defenses and coaches the most is right there, number 19, Sammy Strotter. He can hurt you quickly in the passing game or in the punt return game. This guy is lightning in a bottle, and he scares Missouri. Let's talk about those Missouri Tigers because their offense, Steve, is in great hands, good hands with their quarterback, the pinpoint passing of Chase Daniel. Yeah, and this kid is a kid maybe you haven't heard of, but believe me, before it's all said and done, you will hear and you will know who Chase Daniel is. This is a kid who's a sophomore. He's not very big in terms of physical size, but he plays very big in the spread offense of Missouri. This guy is incredibly accurate. He's got great poise. And when you talk to the players and coaches about this guy, the reverence which they speak about him, it's amazing because you usually are talking about an experienced guy who has spoken about that highly, but he's got some great weapons in that spread offense led by the two huge six-foot-six tight ends, Chase Kauffman, Martin Rucker. These are guys that can stretch the field from the inside, but the wild card is true freshman wide receiver, Jared Perry. This is a guy that can make some big plays. And Craig, the last thing this Missouri team needed before its final game of the year, a stomach flu. It actually hit them last weekend when they first arrived in El Paso, Texas. Made its way through the team, about 35 players affected, several starters included. Adam Spieger at the starting center was feeling it, the team's final practice on Wednesday. Well, the coaching staff was so concerned that he was going to pass it to starting quarterback Chase Daniel. They made him wear gloves during that practice. He is feeling much better today, but I am told this morning a couple players on offense did come down with it, including backup guard Ryan Madison. Craig, let's send it back to you. Thank you, Sam, and we are moments away from kickoff. Oregon State and Missouri, next on CBS. Strange going on. time temperature not bad for late December forty five degrees wind nine miles an hour should not play a factor and the forecast is for partly sunny skies and today's game is in high-definition television and Steve Berline offense will be invoked today between these two clubs you telling me these are two teams that can light it up the spread offense for Missouri it's exciting to watch that ball gets around gets in and out of their quick no huddle the players are coming at you fast they've got the talent on the outside Oregon State very balanced both sides and really a talented football team head coach of Missouri in the seventh year Gary Pinkle signed a new five-year contract back in November and Mike Riley in his fourth season Oregon State was five and six a year ago and bumped that record at nine and four Riley's second tenure with the Oregon State Beavers Oregon State won the toss deferred so Missouri will receive Serna has a teed up in Marcus Woods is sent to return back at his own goal line the 79 is underway here in El Paso Texas five yards deep and woods will not return as we look at today's Applebee starting lineups Missouri's quarterback chase Daniel through for 3197 yards a single season passing record at Mizzou up front Tyler Llewellyn Mountain on the left side along with Madison speaker Wyrick and Clinger backs and receivers two tight ends Rutger and Kauffman both will play and both are dangerous chase Daniel completing 64 percent of his passes and Missouri will spread it with three wide receivers far side play action and Daniel throws on the run a little skip incomplete at the 26 yard line the intended receiver was Tommy Saunders and let's set that Oregon State defense the front line two seniors on the left side Joe Lemma and Ben Seeger linebackers led by Derek Doggett owns 4-4 speed he will cover both sidelines in the secondary is all about the strong safety Savi Piscitelli a first team all packed in selection second down in 10 from the shotgun Tony Temple first carry breaks a tackle and will the catch pop early just past the 25 the mark Temple out of bounds at the 26 yard line and Derek Doggett the junior from San Diego with a terrific sideline to sideline speed with the stop and you know Craig a lot of people think to spread offense only that can hurt you through the air but Tony Temple is back there for this reason if if Oregon State starts playing the pass too much he's gonna pop up in there and pick up seven eight yards a pop just to try and keep that defense honest a pickup before that brings up third down in six Daniel sets up in that pocket sets up a screen underneath a little pitch and catch chase Kauffman breaks a tackle and still on his feet to the 37 yard line Kauffman with his 54th reception of the season and a pickup of 39 and what you're gonna see a lot of today Craig a lot of man to man defense out of Oregon State and what happens chase Kauffman starts on the right side comes all the way across the field they drop coverage nobody picks them up and which is amazing because this guy has got the the most catches on the Missouri Tigers offense he's got over 500 yards receiving he is one of the best Titans in the country and he was Scott free on that that play for a big pickup only a sophomore on first down Kauffman again inside the 35 to the 32 yard line he comes from a terrific breed his dad Paul was a great tight end to Kansas State went on to become an all-pro with Green Bay and played for Kansas City in the NFL he's got good blood and you're gonna see they're gonna use that little bubble screen is what they call that's the way they use it to receivers tight ends it's almost like their wide sweep play they'll run it 10-12 times a game get the ball on the outside let him run and tuck it up try and pick up seven or eight or more yards on the outside second down in five Daniel again from the shotgun play action rolls to his right sets up looks for help throws at the end zone out of bounds there was pressure coming from the back side Van Orsel Van Orsel Jeff Van Orsel from the right end you're gonna see Van Orsel right here on the bottom of your screen he's gonna come just give good pressure now remember this Oregon State defense is very very good against the past they've put pressure on quarterbacks number two in the country against the past they have 44 sacks they let the pack tape with the most sacks they're gonna find a way they're gonna try and get into chase Daniel's face and every see right now they're flexing chase Daniels out to the outside at quarterback is Martin Rucker tight end little trickery Rucker the junior from St. Joseph Missouri Hilltuck and Ron trying to turn the corner and will be close they mark him out at the 28 yard line and I was wrong that was actually wanted Sarah Jared Perry number eight back there Craig they can line up anybody they do a lot of different things to try and throw you off get you get you confused a little bit then try and pop a big one on you right there Jared Perry the speedster freshman true freshman trying to get him to the outside and I think Oregon State considered that play a success they got him whole now they got a fourth and short big play in the ballgame fourth and one fourth downs this year they're pitching five hundred eight of sixteen for Gary Pinkle and the Tigers double tight set with Rucker and Kaufman on fourth and short the screen underneath and is caught by Saunders and a first down for the Tigers at the 25 yard line so Pinkle with an early gamble and this drive continues and Missouri is known for coming out and starting fast they they have had the ball first in every one of their games this year and they've scored almost every time they've had the ball 11 out of the 12 times they've started with the football they've come away with points Saunders with his 24th catch first down at 10 just inside the 25 yard line for the third time today Kaufman with the crab inside the 20 they'll mark him at the 17 yard line Piscitelli the strong safety made the tackle after a pick up a seven and that was a bubble screen again to chase Kaufman and just how good is this guy well look at this fourth in the NCAA in terms of tight end receptions ninth in yards eight touchdowns they find ways to get the ball to that guy and you've seen him twice there on that bubble screen he's big and when he gets those shoulders square to the line of scrimmage he's hard to bring down Daniel hands off temple inside the ten yard line to the seven and only temple junior from Kansas City Missouri and once again Piscitelli who had 70 stops coming into this game with his second tackle of the day and a good solid run that you see Monte Weierich number 71 leading around the edge good job popping it up in there now Mike Riley head coach for Oregon State said I don't care about giving up yards the key to playing a team like this is not giving up points creating turnovers that's what they're interested in the yards they're gonna it's hard to stop this team break the tackle at the ten at the five touchdown Missouri what a great run by Tony temple boy that play was designed to go right all the way he does a great job though feeling a seam on the back side cutting back breaks one tackle there and then a little stutter step right there got him off balance and then scoots into the end zone pretty much untouched a great start for the Missouri Tigers who again Craig they're a very start fast starting team this is not unusual for them to be on the scoreboard first Jeff Wolford 40 of 40 and point after attempts is in good snap good hold and the kick is up and good the streak is at 41 in a row and Missouri strikes first on Tony temple sixth rushing touchdown of the season Tigers by seven and temple went right cut back and ran it in for six we'll be back on CBS then Get used to more action. Look to the skies for the MetLife blimps and plane as they continue to team up with CBS. And let's take a look now at our Home Depot tools for success. Well, that was the perfect drive for the Missouri Tigers to open the game out. They used a lot of different people, but the big plays came from tight end Chase Coleman right there coming across, for some reason uncovered, coming across the field. Nothing special there. But then Tony Temple with two big runs right here off the left side. Nothing fancy. Just a good solidly blocked play. Now right here, a play where Oregon State should have had him for a lot right at the end of the play. You see Brandon Hughes, the cornerback. He got tangled up with his feet. Little juke move by Tony Temple, big touchdown for Missouri, a great run by Tony Temple. And Steve, you mentioned near perfect. I mean, 10 plays, 80 yards, three and a half minutes off the clock, and the key play was that 32 yard catch by Kauffman. Tony Temple capped it with the seven yard touchdown run. Right. And the fourth down conversion, fourth and one that was inside screen pass to Tommy Saunders. That was a big conversion for them as well. Oregon State, they're not going to get frustrated. They've played teams like Hawaii and Oregon who run versions of this spread offense. So they know they're going to have their good times and their bad times during the course of this football game. Adam Crosick kicks away from the 35 yard line. Deep kick, and this one lands eight yards deep and no return. As we look at Oregon State, the quarterback Matt Moore threw for 2,666 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season. That O-line is anchored by the left tackle, Adam Coates. Adam Spear starts today at the left guard in place of the injured Jeremy Perry in the backs and receivers. Strotter makes the catches and Bernard simply makes the runs. It's a dangerous Oregon State offense, averaging nearly 27 points a ball game. They will open with a three wide receiver set down by seven. Up the middle comes Bernard and a gain of five to the 25. Defensively for Missouri, the sack man is Xavier Jackson on the season with seven sacks. The linebackers are solid with Christopher Harrington and Bacon, and the two big corners for Missouri, 6-2 Dominic Johnson and 6-3 Darnell Terrell. Second down and five. The quick flip, Moore incomplete, and let's go above the line. Well, for Oregon State on offense, we talked in the open, it's all about balance. These guys can hurt you passing the ball, running the ball, they've got threats across the board. They thrive on the bounce. But Missouri, their focus is to maintain discipline and not give up the big plays. They've got to strangle Sammy Strotter. He's the outside threat, the guy that can hurt you in a hurry, and they've got to make sure that he does not get free for a big play at any point in this ball game. Second down and four, facing Oregon State, Matt Moore under center from the 25-yard line pressure. Moore throws, it's caught, and on his feet out of bounds at the 30-yard line is Bernard, the tailback. And Marcus Bacon brought the pressure on Matt Moore. And I think they're signaling first down, he just barely got it, and you see the value of Evanson Bernard running back right there. This is the guy that never leaves the field. In fact, Coach Riley told us he gets mad when they take him out. He does not get tired. He can run all day. He does not want to come out of the football game, and he can pick up blitz protection. He's great on screen, passes everything out of the backfield. That's what makes him so valuable. Had a great chat with him yesterday, and as you mentioned, do not bring him to the sideline. So Bernard is lined up as the tailback on first down and 10 play action for Moore. Blitz protection now flushed, and we'll get back to the line of scrimmage at the 30-yard line. A host of Tigers clawed him down. This definitely was a coverage set. Matt Moore had plenty of time back there, and you're going to see everybody coming up the field. It's going to be vertical routes by all the receivers, going to be a good hard play action. That's what we were told they wanted to do. You see nobody really short underneath. Matt Moore didn't feel comfortable putting the ball up the field, and eventually, those defensive linemen from Missouri are going to get there and make the tackle. Matt Moore, very good on his feet, too. He can run the football if things break down, but right there, a good, disciplined play by the Missouri defense. In round, Reuben Jackson at the 40 stutter step, lowers his shoulder and takes a hard hit at the 46. So Mike Rowdy with a trick up his sleeve, and Reuben Jackson gives the Beavers a first down after a pick-up of 16. That's what having a good, solid running threat like Everson Bernard does for you, make the play action. You've got quick little Reuben Jackson coming around the edge there, does a good job of making a move in the backfield. Then one-on-one, David Overstreet, the second right there. It's hard to bring down one of these quick receivers in the open field, does a good job of keeping his feet and getting in on the tackle. We're heading to the nine-minute mark of the opening quarter. Oregon State putting together an impressive opening drive as Moore sets up in the pocket, throws a dart to the inner sideline, and it's complete at the 41. There is Sammy Strotter, 67th reception of the season, an all-packed 10-second team pick after a pick-up of 13. What scares Gary Pinkle and also Matt Emberfield, defense coordinator from Missouri, is this Oregon State defense, when they drop back the pass, they're not dropping back to pick up four or five yards. They're trying to get up the field. 40-plus percent of their passes travel more than 15 yards in the air, and number 19 is usually the recipient of most of those. They're trying to make plays up the field. Over 1,200 yards receiving for Strotter, it's Bernard, who is chased out of bounds at around the 30-yard line. A nice gain on first, and it looks to be a pick-up of eight. Overstreet, David Overstreet, the second, and on the stop. They'll give nine yards to Bernard. What we're seeing here right now, Craig, is exactly what we thought we'd see. Two very, very, very good offenses. You see the rushing yards per game for the Oregon State Beaver. When they're running the ball well, they got a good chance at winning. You see in their four losses, average only 65 yards, but their balance is what makes them so difficult. Missouri, they can play the run or the pass. You can't play them both on every down, and Oregon State's good enough to make you pay either way. Two wide receivers set to the top of your screen. They're going to go right up the gut in a first down, as the ball goes to Bernard at the 28-yard line. They'll get the very latest in all the major bowl games, including team updates, web-exclusive video previews, and expert analysis from Dennis Dodd. It's all at cbssportsline.com. That play right there, Craig, didn't look like much, but that was about a six-yard run right up the gut, right behind Kyle Devan, the center, and Roy Schooning, the right guard, Andy LeVitri, the right tackle, straight ahead, nothing fancy, and Evanson Bernard, when he gets those shoulders going forward, he is hard to bring down. Three carries for 20 yards, Evanson Bernard averages 100 yards a ball game. One of the co-captains for the Oregon State Beavers, Bernard, the long tailback, batted down at the line of scrimmage on first down, that will bring up second and 10. That was close, that was William Moore, number 21, coming across the top of your screen right there, close to being almost a lateral type of pass, but it was definitely traveling down the line, not backwards. The referee, they made that call pretty quickly, hard to make the call in my book, but good play right there by William Moore, getting his hand on the ball and preventing the Oregon State version of the bubble screen going to the left side. So important to have a balance attack, you saw what Oregon State has done so far, five rushes, three passes on this opening drive, second down and 10 at the 28-yard line of Missouri. Again, Matt Moore sets up in the pocket, little pitch and catch, it's caught, and Strotter with his second grab on this drive, another first down for the Beavers at the 14-yard line. Well, I guarantee you, Darnell Terrell is not going to be one-on-one, wanting to be one-on-one all day long against Sammy Strotter, that's a hard job for anybody to handle right there and good job making the off-the-field tackle, but when Matt Moore sees Sammy Strotter cover one-on-one, I guarantee you that ball is going over there every single time. A gain of 13, two grabs now for Strotter, 27 yards, eight minutes to play in the opening quarter, Bernard tries to dance between the Tiger tackles, and maybe a yard to the 13th, Xavi Jackson, the three-year letterman, and the California with the tackle. You know, Craig, this is Missouri defense, they start out the season 6-0 on this team, but the first six games they gave up an average of 72 yards a game, a little over 72. The last six games, look at that, 202 yards in the last six games they lost for those last six. Pretty hard to win a game when you're giving up over 200 yards per game. Matt Moore sets and incomplete for the second time that Missouri's gotten the big paw up, this time the defensive tackle, Ziggy Hood. Yeah, good job by Ziggy Hood, right in the middle of your screen, you're going to see coming up right over the center, Kyle Devan, it was a screen pass, a middle screen pass, and middle screen being set up for tight end Joe Newton. But Ziggy, he figured out, he saw it coming, made a good job of reacting, getting his hands up, getting those big paws on the ball, and Matt Moore wisely just tries to knock that ball down to let anybody else try and get a hand on that and pop that ball up in the air for an interception. Third down and nine. At the 13-yard line, pedaling back, Moore sets up, scrambles, feels pressure, picked up a block, looks to the end zone, slingshots it, touchdown, Strider, oh, how about the protection the front line gave Matt Moore? Not only was it great protection, it was a great individual effort by Matt Moore to not get flustered back there. I told you earlier, this guy's very comfortable moving around in the pocket, he can run, he can move around, buy some time, and right there, it just shows how difficult it is to cover a modal quarterback. I wish I hadn't seen that happen. But that makes it very difficult for receivers to cover, or to be covered all over the field. So the second point is up and good by Cerna. 13-yard touchdown reception, his fifth touchdown catch of the season. He has 4-4, 40 speed as he breaks off that line, and Steve, Matt Moore was able to, as you mentioned, scrambled, and then finally, Strider got him and helped him out, and there is the touchdown. Seven-seven our score. Great instinct, great instinct by Sammy Strider, Matt Moore, just playing streetball pretty much right there. They got a lot to be excited about. Let's go downstairs and check in with Sam Ryan and Craig throughout today's game you may notice along the 25 yard lines these black purple and white ribbons painted and they are in honor of the late north western guy tragically June 29th of an apparent heart attack. Now he coached seven years at Northwestern including two Sun Bowl appearances. The last game he actually coached was here at the Sun Bowl last year the loss to UCLA Randy Walker was 52 what a tragic story that is but a great gesture on behalf of the Sun Bowl to remember and honor a great football coach very well respected football coach from Missouri goes back on offense tied at seven with Oregon State and chase Daniel has that Tiger offense spread out goes back up top and complete at the forty seven Martin Rucker with a near circus catch on the far sideline and that shows you right that's a six foot six two hundred fifty pound tied in right there. Martin Rucker this is a guy that can get up the field inside outside and chase Daniel he sees the matchup he wants to see he's going to give these guys a chance to go make a catch for wide receivers shotgun handoff temple cuts back to the 25 and let's go back above the line on Missouri on offense. It's all about in chase. We trust this guy averages over 300 yards a game total offense he can make plays. You'll see it all day long. But for Oregon State they've got to shut down the running game whenever they try to run and then attack what they do best is come blitzing from every angle pressure up the field they want to get chase Daniel thinking about where that pressure is coming from on every play from the shotgun movement up front no flags and Daniel drops the football covers up at around the eleven yard line. You know Craig I saw that in practice this week four or five times in the same practice I saw the ball on the ground on the shotgun snaps now they're in the shotgun every single step that was the bad snap to left chase Daniel did a good job getting his left arm out there to knock it down and right there Adam Speaker he's there their leader on the offensive line. He should be able to have that down pretty solid Adam Cross it will put into a slight breeze and a high hanger at the forty nine strotter watch out stacked up still on his feet at the 40 yard line in Oregon State is going to have terrific field position after that boot by crossing seven seven our score five fifty three to play in the opening quarter in El Paso. You love our burgers and that's just the beginning. Strange going on over a thousand people insist they've seen something in Loch Ness and yet when science is applied like this expedition first I want to thank my rival coach here for getting my favorite pizza delivered that was a class act thanks coach. It's not delivered. Hey if this isn't delivery we'll play the entire game and. Taste the pizza that has no rival it's not delivery it's DiGiorno. This is just too sparkly. They're real celebrities who become real cops both hands outside Eric's going to call it an airstrike and famous in reality series Wednesday January 10th. Well let's check back some bull heroes of the past how about this name Tony Dorsett running back led the Panthers with a big win in the nineteen seventy five sun bowl and then Thurman Thomas Cowboys eighty seven sun bowl and the late Derek Thomas the linebacker led the Crimson Tide to a victory back in nineteen eighty eight and priest homes led Texas to a win back in nineteen ninety four and the late Pat Tillman nineteen ninety seven the Sun Devils pick up a 17 to seven win. What will happen today. What a quick start. Oregon State and Missouri tied at seven and I'll tell Oregon State right now great field position starting at the 40 yard line. The bad stamp by Adam Speaker Chase Daniel knocked it down but forced Missouri to put on their own end zone. Oregon State also as we mentioned a very fast starting football team they've outscored their opponents this year 115 to 48 in the first quarter and it's hard when you get down in the first quarter it's hard to come back especially against a team like Oregon State because they like to they like to come after you when they get that they like to come up the field and put as much doubt and uncertainty and questioning that quarterback line as they possibly can. Strotters punt return at the 40 yard line gives the Beavers terrific field position on their second offensive series here in the opening quarter clock running under 5 20 to play handoff Bernard ran out on one tackle but the Tigers wrap him up at the thirty nine. See Ziggy Hood right there clapping excited. He knows it's on it's on the big boys up front to shut down that running game because they don't want to give Matt Moore the looks where he's seeing Sammy Strotter one on one on the outside all day long. They've got to be able to shut down the run without bringing the safety up inside to make the tackle Bernard the long tailback up the middle he'll kick it outside makes the nifty move to the 30 and to the 29 yard line Bernard with the first down and how about Oregon State's big wins this season. The Beavers upset the then third ranked Trojans 33 31 thanks to Jeff Van Orso who battled down John David Booty's two point conversion in the game's waning seconds. And then it was Oregon State prevailing at Civil War 30 to 28. Ben Seeger blocked the field goal with just 20 ticks left on the clock. What a year it's been first and 10 for the Beavers at the Tiger 29 yard line that more five step drop nearly had the ball stripped out of his hands. He'll toss it out caught by Jackson spins past the 15 yard line. And right now just taking big chunks out of Missouri's defense. You know what's impressive about this is that it looks so easy right now for Matt Moore. You've got to understand this is a quarterback again that was under all kinds of scrutiny after last year in the first part of this year. But he looks so cool and so calm out there knew exactly where Reuben Jackson was. He takes a hit that the cheap shot should have been a call by the referees by Xavier Jackson right there that that definitely if he's going to play like that he's going to cost his football team quite a bit. You can't take a shot at anybody much less the quarterback during the course of the play like that pick up a 15 they go back to the ground and Bernard shuffles his seat maybe three to the 12 and the clock now running up on three minutes left in this opening quarter. That surprised me about Xavi Jackson there. He's such a nice mellow humble guy we talked to the other day and there's a total offense you look at Oregon State a few more plays both teams average and pretty good yards per play one touchdown a piece but the field position right now always so key in a big game. Oregon State trying to take advantage of the right now second down an eight at the 12 yard line in Missouri under center is Matt Moore and again will stretch it out Bernard and Missouri starting to kind of pick it up a little bit defensively up front on the yard down to the 11 yard line. Good job by the middle of the Missouri defense right here Oregon State just trying to power it up trying to give Evanson Bernard a cutback lane not their good discipline everybody was in the right gaps and again that's tackled Xavi Jackson and you look at the scoring defense from a year ago they go from 80 first rank to twenty seven in a year's time and now a timeout is called and I saw one of the coaches from Oregon State run onto the field at the 20 and call for the time that was the coach Mike Coach he's moving pretty good Mike Riley seven seven Oregon State and Missouri in 2006. Thursday on CBS it's an hour of television you won't forget when Grissom leave CSI it's Thursday at nine eight central on CBS to 18 to play in the opening quarter. Oregon State 25th ranked in the country seven and Missouri seven. And how about this. Both teams were invited to breakfast on Wednesday morning with the troops from Fort Bliss. How about that. The fellows sit down and had a chow. These are some of the really unique fun interesting things that players get to do during their bowl weekend. They don't have classes to get to they've got the whole day in these bowl committees do such a super job of mixing in the fun with the special moments like something like that. I guarantee you those guys that were at that breakfast. They come out of something like that an experience sitting down talking with the soldiers. They come out of there with a much better understanding and appreciation of what these guys go through a moment to remember many moments throughout the week here in El Paso with a red carpet has really been rolled out here by the Brooks Humboldt committee third down and seven at the 11 yard line for Oregon State tied with Missouri seven seven more goes to the flat and it's caught inside the five at the four by Sammy Strotter. He's everywhere. What a great job by Sammy Strotter right there. He knew exactly where that first down marker was. You'll see Matt Moore. He gets back. He wants to throw it right there. Nope, not there. He's patient Sammy Strotter. You see him flash the hole knew exactly where that first down marker was. Now he comes up about a half a yard short because he fell forward. Didn't quite get enough, but he knew he was right near that marker would have been nice. Mike Riley says if he could have got an extra yard, I thought he had enough but just short and they got a tough decision to make. Well, Alex Serna, 21 of 28 field goals and Oregon State's going to take a timeout again to talk this one over. This would just be an absolute chip shot like an extra point for Serna. So Mike Riley will talk it over with Matt Moore. We'll come back to the Brute Sun Bowl on CBS. This is the supply line and is connected to the angle stop. Hey Jack, can I help? Not right now, Jack. Armed and Famous, a new reality series, CBS Wednesday, January 10th. High above the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, over 50,000 have come to watch Oregon State take on Missouri. So the timeout call by Mike Riley to talk about the fourth is short. I mean, it's a sure three. Do you go and put the three on the board or you're risking it early? You know, it's one of those, you're hoping you're right whichever way you can make a case, a strong case for it either way. I like the aggressive attitude. I think his players will respond. They like that. The coastal confidence in him. They put in a fullback, Micah Strickland, who will block for Bernard. So fourth and short. And scooting up the middle post of the goal line is Bernard. They'll mark him about a foot shy first and goal. There's a fumble. They fight for the ball. The question is whether or not he was down before he fumbled the football. You'll see great push. You got to feel like with with a really good running on the ball and he would find that elbow and hit the ground. The ball popped out with your good, solid running game against the defense that has not been very stout against the run the last six weeks of the season. I think Mike Riley did the right thing. Go straight at him. Let your big boys try and create a hole. Let your work force. Evans and Bernard stick it up in there and pick up the easy first down. We're looking at that angle coming straight at you. That ball was coming out, but the elbow was down and Oregon State first and goal inside the one quarterback keeper pushing Matt Moore touchdown. Oregon State was able to push Matt Moore and you know what? Matt Moore just followed. It wasn't very pretty, but it was effective. It worked. Matt Moore was driving those legs, trying to get that ball in the end zone and Kyle Devan gave him just enough room to scoot on in there. That's a point to come by Serna by Alex Serna and a moment ago Everson Bernard coming right at you. Ball comes out. They're going to call it down inside the one yard line and then Matt Moore behind his big center Kyle Devan puts Oregon State on top 14 to 7. Code White, do you copy? Copy that. Hey. Need a lift? Oregon State 14 Missouri 7 37 ticks left in that opening quarter and see we got to go back and look from one angle. As you look straight down the sideline, it looked like he was down. We're talking about Bernard. But now you look at it coming right at you. This was a play a little bit earlier. The first the first touchdown that Matt Moore threw. But that we look back at that. We had a really good angle from the end zone showing the play before the quarterback sneak for a touchdown. And that ball was definitely coming loose before Evanson Bernard's elbow hit the ground, which is what we thought initially. You're going to see right here at the end of the play before his elbow hits the ground right there. Running back just a little bit. You see that ball definitely came out. It was definitely on the ground I think. And it should have been ruled a fumble because it was a great defensive play. I mean it was a play that should have gone probably to Missouri in my opinion. They place 40 yards and more credited with a one yard touchdown run so Oregon State gets the first big break of the game and the kick is away. Line drive Marcus Woods and puts it on a knee five yards deep no return. Both kickers have really hit the ball well in this opening quarter. Yeah we've got some altitude here you know in El Paso. I know I don't know exactly how many feet up we are but the altitude is definitely a factor here in El Paso. The ball is really flying well off those kicking teams. Thirty one seconds left in the opening quarter and Oregon State owns the seven point lead and Missouri goes back to work. Tony Temple breaks the tackle with a 35 spins his way down to the 38 yard line. Boy quick as a whip and Koy Francis the left corner makes the tackle after the pick up of 19 15 six left in the quarter. How about how about that run. Boy quick as can be as Tony Temple. He got that he saw that scene and tucked it up in there. I don't think we're gonna get another playoff before the end of the quarter but a good start to the drive for the Missouri Tiger offense so that is the first quarter. Oregon State 14 Missouri seven the brute sun ball will continue after these messages and a word from your local station. We'll be right back with more welcome back El Paso Texas the Brute Sun Bowl our score after this Oregon State 14 Missouri seven we apologize having some technical difficulties with our score and game clock. We hope to have that working in a moment and Wednesday on CBS comedy is king and Kevin James rules catch a new King of Queens Wednesday at eight seven central only on CBS Tigers are in full force here in El Paso chase Daniel and the shotgun first and 10 from the 39 yard line quarter number two underway a pump to the near side and pressured him down then or so Jeff and or so the right end. You're going to see him coming off right off the right the top of your screen there just a good solid inside move faked up the field did a great job coming back underneath. That was Joel Klinger the right tackle the left. Actually the left tackle it got burned on that when he was playing the speed up the field and then or so did a super job coming back underneath the finishing off the play forty fifth sack recorded by Oregon State's defense this season and the third by Van Orsel incomplete will be the call Tommy Saunders could not grab the handle and you see on that play right there Craig what Oregon State likes to do they like to play aggressive man to man coverage on the outside bring pressure with their linebackers and safeties. That was not a good man to man decision by Chase Daniel right there he threw it to a man who just ran up two or three steps turned around that's an easy guy to cover. There was not a good place to put that football third down. Daniel throws it up and over the middle and complete and the intended receiver was the freshman Jared Perry and now a flag comes out at midfield. They're going to get boy Francis for a little bit of contact up the field. I thought it could have been thrown. I wasn't sure but he was on the back pretty good at Jared Perry first flag of the day. It's been a very clean game. Yeah definitely a good call though on this one here. Fast interference. Number four on the defense penalty of the fight now you're going to see boy Francis he's coming in over the top you see that right arm right there on the right arm of Jared Perry kind of kind of hooked that right arm so he couldn't go up with that hand and pull the ball in Gary Pinkle. Yeah that's right. They got the one on one matchup they wanted. Chase Daniel went to the right guy and they opened. We got Jared Perry quarterback again right here heads near sidelines stacked up and driven back at the forty seven. Maybe two dispense on this depends on the spot. You know what teams are doing a lot of if anybody has seen Arkansas play this year with Darren McFadden the very very talented running back sophomore running back. They've lined him up at quarterback and now you're seeing teams trying to get the ball in their playmaker's hand line up in the shotgun. You're seeing it in college and the NFL. Carolina Panthers doing it with D'Angelo Williams running back but they're trying to get creative with how they can get the ball to their playmakers again from the shotgun. Boy Oregon State staying at home and absolutely nowhere for Temple to go. Alan Darlin the middle line backer and Jeff Van Orsel again on the right side of the street coming straight up. He's sitting right there almost like he knew the play was coming. It was Alan Don. I'm sorry Craig. Right there and right in front of me super job slipping the block and Tony Temple tried to get a straight arm in there and get him off of him. But that's a much bigger man. Alan Darlin finishing off the play real real solid defense this drive by the Oregon State Beavers a loss of seven that brings up third down in 16 as Daniel stands up throws the deep ball single coverage down field. From Arlington Texas goes forty two yards and the Tigers move the chain. What a great time for the play. Chase Daniel did a great job buying time moving in the pocket a little bit and I'm covered down the field right there. Not a not a very good job at all by Gerard Lawson number five. The safety right there. He got caught up watching Chase Daniel and ran right past him. Oregon State Gerard Lawson. Lucky that wasn't a touchdown. First and ten at the 18 yard line of Oregon State Tigers down by seven and on the move after that big pass play to correct with Daniel Scott. Drop no game. I'll bring up second down. I can't get over what Gerard Lawson was doing on that play. He was almost like he was standing in quicksand let Brad Ekwar Ekwar run right past him before he realized what was going on. There wasn't any play action or anything. Chase Daniel rolling. Lawson should have been given ground and trying to respect the speed up the field of Ekwar Ekwar. Four wide receivers set to near side to the top of your screen on second down at 10. Martin Rucker the tight end. Pushes his way down near the 10 yard line. Knocked down by the middle linebacker Bryant Cornell and a pick up a seven. And one thing I think we need to get into Craig. How is it to this young quarterback. Chase Daniel is so comfortable in this offense. Well he's been running it for a while. He grew up in this offense all the way back to middle school running the exact same offense through high school at South Lake Carroll High School in Texas. So when he came to Missouri he was way ahead of the curve. He already knew most of the offense. Well as Gary Pinkle said the head coach of Missouri his accuracy is unmatched. In college football today on third down and three they will show blitz. Here they come. Daniel steps up in the pocket. And that's exactly what Missouri tries to do. They can flex these big tight ends on the outside six foot six going up and trying to get that football almost pulls it in a super job. Defending the play by Keenan Lewis the most athletic D.B. The Oregon State defense has but Kauffman almost came down with that football. You're going to see a lot of that. They like to give those big boys a chance to go up and make a play. Fill goal attempt for Jeff Wolford. This will be from 30 yards on the season 17 of 19. Good snap. The hold is down. The kick is away. And from 30 yards Missouri puts three on the board. Oregon State with the lead of 14 to 10 in El Paso. This referee's a jackass. No I believe that's a zebra. Hey baby. Hey what's up. Not much. Back at the Sun Bowl where Oregon State leads Missouri 14 10 in the second quarter. Hard to believe. But Oregon State quarterback Matt Moore actually took a year off from college football after starting four games for UCLA in 2003 2004. He wanted to focus on baseball was drafted by the Angels in the twenty second round of the 2004 draft as a third baseman and outfielder. But it was actually his dad Don who talked him out of playing minor league baseball. Don Moore spent six years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He said you don't want to take those long bus rides in minor league baseball. Craig will send it back to you. Sam. Thanks. I think his dad also told Matt listen pal we don't need to have knees and elbow surgeries. But you know what. Football is a rugged game. You know that my friend. Yeah. He told me that I kind of said when I had 18 surgeries in my 17 years in NFL there's more of a chance of having surgery playing football than baseball. But I think it was the long bus rides that Matt didn't want to deal with. And that was probably a good decision. He's playing really well in this game right now. Oregon State up by four and the football. And that more on the keeper rolls out fires and complete strotter with another catch inside the 40 at the 36 yard line a pick up a 17. And there you see the creativity and the mobility that Matt Moore has the creativity in the play called a little little rollout play right there where you can just give the defense something else to think about get those defensive ends worried about keeping Matt Moore in the in the pocket. He's got the ability to get on the outside throw the ball very well on the move. Sammy Strotter had a lot of space out there to find an open hole and give him a big target five catches for Strotter sixty two yards and that touchdown in the opening quarter play action and a dart to the sideline incomplete and against Strotter was the intended receiver. We're seeing a very concerted effort by Matt Moore to get the ball to Sammy Strotter. He had good one on one coverage on the outside. I think that particular play right there he had a good shot at Joe Newton the six foot seven tight end over the middle as well one on one but not a bad decision by Matt Moore at all right there. He likes Sammy Strotter one on one on the outside just wasn't a very accurate throw by Matt for the first time today. That more today seven of eleven passing for eighty one yards and five of seven to Strotter. They'll go back to the ground Bernard stacked up and maybe lost the yard. How about the Tigers swarming on defense. Xavier Jackson number forty eight always around the football. He is he's an he's an energy guy and he told us he does have seven sacks on the season but he says he doesn't look at himself as a pass rusher. He said I think I pretty much got lucky seven times this year with the pass rush but he said if they try to run the ball to me my mentality is they're making no positive yards on the ground to my side. And what a motor. Remember in our talk his high school coach told him he'd never make it never. And that is the motivator for Xavier Jackson told him he'd never make it in life much less in football. Out of the pocket comes Matt Moore throws and dropped at midfield Ruben Jackson and that people see it again. Looks like maybe turned him around a little bit and was unable to plant his feet for the catch. I definitely was a little bit behind him but Ruben Jackson can make this should be able to make this catch with his eyes closed. Maybe maybe his eyes were closed on this play. I don't know but definitely a ball that should have been caught sure a little bit behind him but that ball hit him right between the circles of the eights right there. He's got to make that catch would have been easily a first down. Kyle Loomis is set to get to the first time today. Saunders with the fair catch at the twenty two for Missouri. Forty yard kick no return with nine twenty five left here in the first half of the group symbol and his little plays like that. You know Ruben Jackson he's made a lot of big catches with his team but you know in a close ballgame which this is right now 14 to 10. You got a chance to make a big play convert a first down keep the ball in your office and you're playing against an explosive offense like this Missouri Tigers offense. You hate to give them more chances by making simple mistakes and mistakes that you can routinely make make a positive play on that catch. You got a first down instead Missouri's got the ball back now free wide receivers set to the near side on first and 10 Chase Daniel and that little handoff to Tony Temple. Well he turns that corner and then just hits another gear. My goodness. Out of bounds of the twenty six and a pick up a four. I think what Missouri is seeing is Oregon State's going to a very unique defensive alignment on first and second down there. They're having three down line and one of their defensive ends lined way up outside and then Alan Darlin the middle linebackers coming up almost in a defensive tackle position standing up. You can see him standing up right there on the inside pitching catch. Watch out. There's the throw. Sanders lets it fly. There's a battle incomplete right there on the inside. That's correct. We try to give himself a little room to make that catch. But Tommy Saunders he bought it after he threw that ball. I'm telling you he took one in the mouth. You know what it's like to be a quarterback now taking one right in the chops. That was what he got to throw off. They ran this plan practice. But man that was Dorian Smith number 93 coming right there and also right in front right in the top of his head. You know you're looking at him as well. That is not a good feeling when you're throwing that football totally exposed like that. Well not the way to ring in the new year. You know you get your bell wrong. Third down and six for Missouri as Chase Daniel again exclusively going shotgun sets up with a 20 yard line. He's caught at the thirty five spectacular play both in design and execution by the Missouri Tigers. They set that play up with some of those short little bubble holes in the inside screens. Chase Daniel made a pump fake on the short guy coming in with the inside screen and then that left Dorian Alexander wide open up the field seventy four yards and now Wolford and to try the extra point through the uprights and he's got it. Steve time now to check the playbook presented by the Hartford. Well you're going to see the Nario Alexander he's lined up in the slot right here. This is him. What's going to happen. They're going to have a little fake screen pass right here. Chase Daniel is going to make a pump fake to him right there. Quick pump like everybody flies up for the Oregon State defense that leaves the Nario Alexander wide open up the field the safeties for Oregon State overreacted. They thought for sure was the middle screen coming and Chase Daniel he knows that play worked to perfection. He's excited about it. The Missouri Tigers are back in the lead in this ballgame. Twenty seven touchdowns thrown by Daniels and how about Alexander the freshman from Marlin Texas his first Division 1 touchdown. Well a good time for it right there and I think that might have been part of the deal. I think Oregon State probably wasn't too sure who the Nario Alexander was or maybe they didn't respect him very much and great design in the play again the pump fake on the screen. Got everybody flying up easy throw and catch for a touchdown big play from Missouri Steve they know they know who Alexander is now. Yeah they know that now that is very clear in their minds. What a big target to six foot four two hundred five pounder in high school a year ago at Marlin High School in Marlin Texas. Forty nine grabs nine touchdowns and he's a terrific high jumper and a triple jumper over forty five feet. Yeah there was nobody. He's got some speed too. He got those long strides going nobody was going to run him down. He knew what to do with that football when he got on the sideline there maybe a return first one of the day at the two yard line. They make the reverse around Lawson past the twenty five and there's a pile up at the twenty seven yard line on New Year's Day. Two high octane teams collide when Steve Slayton leads the West Virginia Mountaineers against Calvin Johnson and the Ramblin wreck at Georgia Tech and the Toyota Gator Bowl number twelve against number twenty five how about this shootout in the first half. Seventeen fourteen Missouri Oregon State first and ten at the twenty seven yard line and maybe a yard for Bernard MetLife is teaming up with CBS to provide today's aerial coverage of all the football action below a fixed wing aircraft is being used today. So blimps Snoopy one and Snoopy two can remain in warmer weather. Forty five degrees of game time expected to warm up about fifty not bad for late December. I'll tell you I'll take this every time. It's a beautiful clear day little cloud cover in the sky but super day to play some football second down and nine Matt Moore pedals back sets fires throws up over the middle and is caught at the forty yard line by the tight end Joe Newton Newton an interesting story. People he's a big target to at six seven but did not play last year had an injury to his left leg in practices in August and had to ride the bench the rest of the way. He is also one of the top tight ends in the country. He was a semifinalist for the Mackie Award much like Chase Kauffman the tight end for the Missouri Tigers. But he's a big six foot seven two hundred fifty six pound guy Matt Moore he's got to got a security blanket and Joe Newton that was his one hundredth career catch for Oregon State eleven yard pick up first and ten fevers at the 40 yard line and boy Bernard Denson now has been figured out. Brock Christopher the stronger Sam linebacker dropped him for a four day four yard loss. We know Evanson Bernard is a great cutback run. You see number twenty one right there coming off the edge. William Moore he's the safety blitzing on the back side of that play. He's there to prevent the cut back of the super job right there of stacking up. Evanson Bernard you're going to see he wants his read takes him to the back side. But William Moore and company are sitting right there waiting for him. That was also Brock Christopher number thirty four linebacker ready to make a play second down in 13 five step now seven step drop is more pedals. They run to the sideline and hurdles out of bounds at the 38 yard line. Darnell Terrell how about that jump on the far side. Great great tackle. There was no indecision on Terrell's part there at all. Matt Moore is a good athlete running with the football trying to trying to hurdle. I don't think that's his strength. Good job in the open field tap keeping Oregon State now in a third and twelve situation with the Missouri Tigers have to look out for now though is Matt Moore is comfortable buying time trying to freeze the receivers up the field by moving around that pocket if it isn't their claim for third down in twelve with six twenty nine left to play in the opening half more pedals back again pressure call sidesteps trouble sets up and throws inside the 50 yard line and it's Brandon Powers the slot receiver with the grab of 13 yards. That's what a mobile quarterback does for you. He was pressure he was athletic enough to get on the outside by some time for Brandon Powers to get across the field. I think Missouri felt like they had the right pressure call. They thought they had the right shot at getting Matt Moore but he was athletic enough to get it. We now go to Katie Couric for a CBS News special report. Craig thank you so much. The official state funeral for America's 38th president is about to begin six days of ceremonies honoring Gerald R. Ford. The Ford family will be gathering at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert California for the first ceremony a private family prayer service. This by the way is the first time former first lady Betty Ford is appearing in public since her husband died the day after Christmas. Following the prayer service the president's body will lie and repose inside the church until tomorrow morning so the public may pay last respects. Then his body will be flown to Washington D.C. where it will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda until the service at the National Cathedral on Tuesday. President and Mrs. Ford have been members of St. Margaret's Church since the mid 1970s and they've lived in Palm Desert since leaving the White House in 1977. CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker is at the church. Bill? Katie this is about to begin in just a few short minutes here but we were told by the Ford family's pastor Mr. Robert Susan. Mr. excuse me I was just being patted here by someone here by Mr. Robert certain that excuse me. Excuse me. I'm sorry Katie we're being told that we have to get off camera now. The ceremony is about to begin so I'll step aside and let you watch. No problem Bill we understand. As we sit and watch and wait for the family to walk into the church presidential historian Douglas Brinkley is here with me in our studio in New York by the way Doug is a CBS News consultant who's writing a book about Gerald Ford right now and he'll be sharing his insights about the former president today and in the days ahead. Doug President Ford has been remembered in the last few days primarily for his decency and kindness as a person even more than what he did as a president although the pardon of Richard Nixon is also front and center in many of these obituaries. How do you think he changed the nation his presidency itself? Well the word that everybody keeps using is healing and his memoir was called A Time to Heal but think how Ford had a big role in all the big moments in baby boomer history. John F. Kennedy's assassination it was Gerald Ford that was part of the Warren Commission report the last surviving member of the Warren Commission. You deal with Watergate which is such a defining moment and he had the key role in taking over for Nixon and then pardoning Nixon and all that that meant and then finally the evacuation of Vietnam I mean he's the one who got us out of the quagmire and brought over all these Vietnamese. He's the one when you look at the documents Katie that said these Vietnamese should be brought into the United States so he had a key role in all those key moments. It's hard to remember for many people how controversial that pardon of Richard Nixon was. There's still many some people who feel it wasn't the right thing to do but by and large history is remembering him well for this act. Well a couple big moment happened when the John F. Kennedy Foundation up in Boston gave Gerald Ford the Profiles in Courage Award which usually goes to Liberal Democrats and here was Ted Kennedy who had hammered on Ford for the mistake of the pardon. Senator Kennedy invited him there to Boston and said you did the right thing. I was wrong. You were right. That meant a lot. Suddenly liberals and Democrats start saying you know what the pardon probably was the best thing for the country. There's still some in Calcetran people that don't think Ford should have done it but history is starting to work in Jerry Ford's favor that he did pardon Nixon. And I know that he used to carry around a piece of paper a Supreme Court decision about what a pardon was that it really was an admission of guilt in many ways and that gave him a lot of solace in the years after he did in fact pardon Richard Nixon. In fact when Bob Woodward had interviewed him not too long ago Woodward said that what he did was pull out of his wallet President Ford a faded clipping of a 1915 decision saying see I wasn't saying he wasn't guilty. I pardoned him but by the book of the law that doesn't mean that I'm saying that he was innocent. As we wait for the family to arrive I know that you have spent a lot of time with former President Ford in recent years. He was in incredible shape wasn't he? Tip top. I interviewed him in 2003 out at Rancho Mirage and beyond being so relaxed and comfortable in his own skin you couldn't help but notice how healthy he looked. At tan he was swimming two times a day. The valley out there in California with the services taking place is very restorative to your spirit and he told me the one indulgence that he had while he tried to stay perfectly fit was his relentless love of butter pecan ice cream and he would get a quart of it and eat it and then feel guilty and try to work off those pounds the next day. He was a delightful man to talk to. You usually don't say that about politicians but he truly was. He had any inner time with him or interface with him you had to like him. And I know that Betty Ford really was a wonderful spouse for him for many, many years. She's now 88 years old and was certainly praised for everything she did and her candor about having breast cancer and her addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs which resulted in the opening of the Betty Ford Center which has helped countless people deal with their own problems of addiction. Absolutely. I mean they got married in 1948. A few weeks later it was I think October 1548. A few years later he became a congressman. She was his wife for his whole long political career and they're in retirement in Rancho Mirage, California. He confronted as a husband her drug addiction and actually went with Betty Ford to Long Beach, California to sit in on how she could get healed and together they really did the Betty Ford Clinic and he took on a lot of the fundraising responsibilities, particularly East Coast while she fundraised in the West and made that this first class institution that it is today. And Mrs. Ford will be obviously in attendance along with their four children, Michael Gerald Ford who was an ordained minister who actually gave the president his last rights and was at his bedside obviously and Jack Ford as well as Stephen Ford and Susan Ford Bales. Let's watch and listen for a moment, Doug. We're waiting for the Hearst to approach the front of the church. Over. Over. Over. There you see Betty Ford, Ford's wife of 58 years. I see Susan Ford to her left. And I believe that is Jack Ford next to Susan. Steve Ford is immediately behind his mother. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Over. Here. Okay. With faith in Jesus Christ, we received the body of our brother Gerald for burial. Let us pray with confidence to God, the giver of life, that he will raise him to perfection in the company of the saints, deliver your servant, Gerald, O sovereign Lord Christ from all evil, set him free from every bond that he may rest with all your saints in the eternal habitations where with the father and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign one God forever and ever. Amen. Let us also pray for all who mourn that they may cast their care on God and know the consolation of his love. Almighty God, look with pity upon the sorrows of your servants for whom we pray. Remember them, Lord, in mercy, nourish them with patience, comfort them with a sense of your goodness, lift up your countenance upon them and give them peace through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. That was Reverend Robert certain of ST Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, California, where the Fords have been worshipping for 39 years. As we mentioned earlier, after this private family prayer service, the president's body will lie in repose inside the church until tomorrow morning. Here's a look at what's coming up as the state funeral for President Ford continues tomorrow. The casket bearing our 38th president will be flown from California to Washington, D. C. There will be a state funeral at the U. S. Capitol tomorrow evening. Beginning tomorrow evening, the body will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda for public viewing. Then on Tuesday, a national day of mourning, there will be a funeral service at the National Cathedral. The body then will be flown to Michigan for burial Wednesday on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford Library and Museum. Now we turn to another big story developing today, the impending execution of Saddam Hussein. David Martin of the Pentagon has an update on that story. David, we've been hearing rumblings all afternoon that this execution is imminent. What are you hearing? Katie, the latest is that Saddam remains in an American jail cell still awaiting execution. The Iraqis have legal custody of him since he was tried and convicted in an Iraqi court, but the U. S. military still has physical custody of him. That could change at any moment, and once it does, his execution could follow in very short order. In fact, he could go straight from his jail cell to the gallows. The Iraqi government wants to execute him as soon as it possibly can, but the timing has been complicated by the fact that a Muslim holy period is about to begin, and Muslim law or Iraqi law, excuse me, apparently holds that you cannot execute a Muslim on a holy day. But the issue really is now one of timing. Will Saddam's life last a few more hours or a few more days? And David, are U. S. forces in Iraq in a state of alert? Have they been doing anything differently in preparation for this execution? Well, they have. They anticipate that there will be some kind of violence. Saddam is a Sunni, so some of the Sunni insurgents might lash out either against the coalition, the American troops, or against Shiites who are the the faction that is now in power in Iraq. But frankly, Katie, the level of violence in Iraq is so high that it may be hard to notice a spike. All right. Well, David, I know you're gonna be watching this story very carefully throughout the day, and of course we will have more on the Saddam Hussein situation and the funeral services for Gerald Ford tonight on the CBS Evening News. Now what you missed while we were away, he plays late in the second quarter. And we start with the fumble by the quarterback of Oregon State, Matt Moore. It was a very clean first quarter, but things got a little sloppy after he went away. That ball was recovered by Missouri, but the Tigers gave it right back. Chase Daniels chased out the pocket, and Daniels drops the football. The Beavers recover, and then this pass ruled not an interception. Moore tried to hit Reuben Jackson. The play went to review, and it was called incomplete. And that's where we stand at the half, 17-14. And when we come back, Sam Ryan will have Moore and Geico at the half at halftime in El Paso. One of the most dramatic stories of this college football season was the rise of Rutgers, and no one enjoyed the team's success more than their senior fullback, Brian Leonard, who has experienced both the highs and the lows of being a Scarlet Knight. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Leonard was the recipient of this year's Dratty Award, better known as the Academic Heisman and our Red Lobster Scholar Athlete of the Year. It's been a memorable season for the captain of the team that won the biggest game his school has ever seen. When we won that game and 44,000 people rushed the field, that was probably the most amazing thing I ever had in college football. Then after that they had to shut down the streets in New Brunswick and close down everything, and now people can look at Rutgers and say, you know, that's my school. I am proud to announce that this year's recipient is Brian Leonard of Rutgers University. To win the Dratty Award is important to me because it's not only academics, but it's on the field, too, and in the community. It's a great experience, and it was fun, you know, being narrowed down from 100-something guys down to 17 guys and then to the number one guy, and it's really a great honor. I really appreciate this award. I'd say you come to college and get your academics first, and then, you know, football second. I mean, really that's how you got to have your priorities there. I'd definitely tell people, do your schoolwork, you know, study all hours, get them in, and then you'll be fine, and then you'll be able to do what you love and play football. You know, I first came here through the 1-11 season and, you know, getting booed off the field. I mean, until now, the 10-2 season, and everyone, you know, loving us in Jersey. You know, I think that's the best feeling I've ever had, you know, since I've been here and to change this program around the world is today. Brian Leonard closed out his collegiate careers. Rutgers won its first bowl game in its 137-year history as the Scarlet Knights defeated Kansas State in last night's Texas Bowl 37-10. Coming up next, we'll tell you about another running back who's displaying a tremendous amount of character. A touching story of football and family when the Geico halftime report continues. Welcome back to the Geico Halftime Report and the 73rd Annual Sun Bowl. Every college athlete has to juggle the demands of schoolwork and sports, but Ray Ray McElrath Bay of Clemson University has taken on a more challenging responsibility, raising his 12-year-old brother, Famar. Over the summer, the 20-year-old redshirt freshman was granted custody of his brother because of their mother's continuing drug addiction. We caught up with Ray Ray and Famar on Christmas Day in Atlanta. In this season of giving, one young boy is thankful to be on the receiving end of heartfelt brotherly love. My name is Famar McElrath Bay. I am 12 years old. I live with my brother Ray Ray. He is a football player at Clemson University. I live with my brother because my mom is trying to work through her drug addiction and my dad has some gambling problems. Famar, say cheese. My brother and I came down to Atlanta to celebrate Christmas with my family, including my mom. Living with my brother is great. He loves me and takes care of me, and I get to hang out with the football team. I think it's really tough for him because he has to be three things, a student, a student athlete, and a parent. They do have a special bond. It's amazing to see, and sometimes it breaks my heart to see. I think Ray Ray may have stress, a lot more stress than he should have at his age, but he's handling it pretty well. I'm so, so very proud of both of them. It's a blessing, I guess. My teammates, my coaches, and their families, the whole Clemson community has been very wonderful. A lot of people in Clemson had to donate to Famar's trust to contribute in some other way, so that's been really good. So I'm thankful for the people in Clemson. Sometimes it's pretty tough for Ray Ray, but if Ray Ray didn't take care of me, I would have had to go back to a foster home. It's really nice to come back and see all of my family. It means a lot to be back home in Atlanta during Christmas. Ray Ray has been awesome this year. He just stepped right on in and I think he's kind of taking the role of a father for the whole family. He's been a very, very big part of my support, and in keeping this family together, I don't know what it would have been without him. Sorry. That's my baby. Christmas is not just about the presents. It's all about the thought that counts and being with your family and everyone. That's pretty good. I couldn't say that. The thought that counts. Christmas actually came early for Ray Ray and Famar. Back in September, the NCAA granted an unprecedented waiver so Clemson could set up a trust fund to help with Famar's care. Thanks for watching the Geico Halftime Report.
