World News Tonight right after Como News 4 at 5 o'clock every week night. Her boots are made for walkin' and her figure is made for perfection. Nancy Sinatra is stepping straight from the steamy pages of Playboy and into the white-hot spotlight of a whole new career. Get one step ahead on what's next and take a stroll through a star-studded path filled with personal stories about the biggest names in showbiz. Are you ready, Boots? If you thought she revealed all in Playboy, wait till you see Nancy Sinatra. Here it is, ladies and gentlemen, the latest issue of Playboy Magazine and, whoa, gracing the cover and the inside pages, the daughter of one of the most powerful and respected entertainers of all time, the legendary Frank Sinatra. Now, our guest today became a 60s icon after her huge hit record, These Boots Are Made For Walkin'. And right now, those boots are walkin' right out on our stage here in the Broadcast Center, New York City, for her very first in-depth, exclusive broadcast television interview. Please welcome the actress, the singer, and now Playboy centerfold, Nancy Sinatra. Hi. Hi, Penny. Just stand up a second. You're so little. You're so little. What size are those boots? Right now, six and a half. Six and a half. The rest of you is considerably larger, I noticed. No, just kidding. Just kidding. So why did you do Playboy? It's so controversial. Playboy? Well, you know, we sort of started out together, Playboy and I. And I guess I just felt it was appropriate at this time. It wouldn't have been in the 60s, though. That's for sure. There was one picture, Mike showed me of you with your bikini, and you're picking it up just like that from back in the 60s, and I heard it was banned in the U.S. Banned in Boston. Banned in Boston, okay. It's true. Times have certainly changed. Haven't they? So why did you do it? I needed to really turn things up a little bit because it's very competitive out there, and I figured, why not? My kids said, go for it, Mom. As long as they said it's okay. How old are your kids? Two girls. 19 and 20. And they said, go for it, Mom? Go for it. Now, if your children are 19 or 20, then you are of a certain age. It is unusual, is it not, Nance, to come back into the public eye in such an altogether way? Are you embarrassed at all? An altogether way, yes. Embarrassed a little bit. A little bit. What did your dad say? He told me that I should get more money. You explained to Frank Sinatra what they were paying you, and he said, ask for more? Double it. So he didn't scold you? Do you still have that kind of relationship? There was a minute where he hesitated a little, but no. He understands the reasons for it. What's been going on in your life recently? Oh, my goodness. Well, I met a man about a year ago who just insisted that I start working again because he was a fan of mine from way back. And he sort of engineered this comeback via reissuing old albums and the release of a new album and t-shirts and calendars and yada yada. And he's done an incredible job. And here we are a year later on Geraldo. That's right. And we're delighted to have you. We really are. Thank you. I was a tremendous fan. When these Booths Are Made For Walking came out, you seemed to almost epitomize that whole era, the Carnaby Street fashions, the mini skirts, the kind of you were the flip side to Annette Buñuelo. She was kind of a fifties straight, and you were kind of sixties racy. It's funny you would bring her up because she, I copied her the first five years of my recording career. In what sense? Look at that. I can't imagine Annette ever doing that. Look at that. So cute. You know, kind of Nancy Nice Lady we used to call her before the Booths thing. Whose idea was the Booths? Lee Hazelwood, the writer of the song. He said, you've been married, you've been divorced. Who are you kidding with this little girl stuff? He said, why don't you behave like an adult? And my friend Amy's laughing. It's true. And I didn't know what he was talking about, to be honest with you, because I was still very naive and innocent and silly. But he showed me through the songs how to do it, how to bite lyrics and be a little bit nasty, and a little bit tough. And strangely enough, even though there were no feminists then, or if there were, we didn't have the label on it. Right, definitely didn't. I sort of started to lead a movement, which I wasn't aware of it then, but in retrospect I could see it. I could see what happened. Is the Playboy cover kind of, as it is, rebellious? Is that a conscious effort to be back to that kind of little bit racy, well, some people would say quite racy, that kind of tough girl, I'm no Miss Nice? Nice lady? Yeah, definitely. There are two sides to every woman, I think. Maybe the women disagree with me in the audience, but I think there are. Actually, I want to ask some of the ladies in the audience what they think about your decision to take it all off. Let's start with you. Come on, stand up. Go ahead, don't be shy. What do you think? I don't know why. Go ahead, go ahead. I just don't know why you went for it after all this time, you know, outside of knowing, I mean, what you said before, that you have to go for it. Like your children said, go for it. So I guess if that's what's in your heart, you go for it if you want to try something new. But you are mildly disapproving. I'm not disapproving of you, because I've seen you at a different light, you know. A lady. Yeah. It kind of disappointed me a little bit. Oh, sorry. But I, whatever, you know, whatever your sure thing, that's okay with me. Is that your husband? Yeah, great. It's your husband? Do you have the same opinion? Friend. Friend. Oh, you do? Oh, I thought you bought the magazine and had it secretly danced away someplace. Well, you knew that would be part of the reaction, but that's okay though, isn't it? It's okay. Controversy is better than nothing. People don't have to look at it, you know, they don't have to buy it. But this woman's very kind because she, in essence, said that she respects my right to choose to do it. Has there been any backlash, though? Any backlash? I think this type, yes. But I expected it. I knew it would be controversial, first of all, because of my age, you know, and secondly, because of my name. Do you want to share your age? Fifty-four. I don't know which I can show. I'll show you one without a, oh, here. Now, that's fifty-four. That's very cool. Not to mention with the dress also. But changing the face to fifty. Changing the face to fifty. I can definitely relate to that. I'm not the first one, Geraldo. Look at Jane Fonda. Really? Definitely. She is amazing to me. You and Hugh Hefner are friends, are you not? Mm-hmm. Did he play an instrumental role in getting you in the magazine? Not initially. Initially, we went through the proper channels, you know, sort of one step at a time through the organization. But eventually he did, because there was some concern about doing a cover, another cover, of a middle-aged woman. And he made the decision to do it. He called me and he said, I love the cover, I love the pictorial, and we're going with both in the spring. So he made that choice. And you never had any qualms about it? Oh, yes, I did. Are you kidding? Oh, my God. You have no idea. Well, tell us. I was frantic. I mean, it took an awful lot of courage to do this for me, you know. And people still say, well, why then? Well, you have to understand the nature of promotion and tools that you need to work with. And the miniskirt in the 60s was my tool then. The boots, the short skirt. Well, you know, the skirts can't get any shorter. So they have to disappear. You save a lot on wardrobe. I don't think I'll ever do it again, but that's OK. And you know, something else, kind of a fringe benefit that's happening is that women my age are saying, yeah, great, you know, you're striking a blow for us. So that makes me really happy. This man over here is nodding. Yeah, it makes him really happy, too. Do you still wear boots? I should have worn them today, I guess. But I just thought I'd try to be a little more conservative. And my mother said I should look like a lady. I'll stand up one more time. So Nancy Sinatra, she's wearing all but her boots, talking about dad, talking about family, talking about her life and love, the focus of this edition of her album. From young star to international beauty to Oscar winner. What's the matter? Don't you think that was funny? I thought it was a screen. He's truly a living legend. I love your father, and you're just terrific. I was having a long-distance conversation with my 42-year-old son last Saturday. And in the middle, he said, Whoa! I said, What is this? He said, I just saw Nancy's centerfold. He's a subscriber to Playboy. Is he single? Yes. I thought there was a new love interest. Is there not, Nancy, in your life? Not yet. He would love to meet you. Do you have a 1-800-NANCY number? Wouldn't it be fun for him to meet Nancy? Oh, it would be very fun. I'll have a telling to be sure and watch Monday. OK, we're going to post the number at the end, all you eligible bachelors. Now, you married Tommy Sands. That was when Tommy was kind of like an Elvis... Teenage idol. Teenage idol, yeah. And you two divorced not long after, though, right? About three and a half years. Three and a half years. And then you're, I'm sorry, I forgot the name of your husband. Hugh Lambert. Right. And he passed away in the 80s, right? 85. And so you've been a widow for 10 years? 10 years. Hi, Nancy. Early in the segment, you mentioned that your daughters are supportive of you posing for Playboy. My one question to you is what your feelings would be if your daughters themselves posed for Playboy. I would kill them. No, they're too young. You've got to be, well, I shouldn't say that. You've got to be 50 to be in Playboy now, a new rule. No, no, no, I don't mean it that way. I just think you have to make a very informed decision, because once you do it, it's out there forever, it's etched in stone, and you can't take it back. Will you totally nude? Yes. Do you want to say it? Here. Here. Come here. Just stand up. Come here. What do you think? What do you think? Oh. Here, hold on to this. Don't pass it around. Now that you've reinvested in your career, where do you plan to go with it? I have no idea. You know something's funny. If the people don't buy the albums and they don't come to see the shows, this whole thing is history. I don't know. We have to see what happens. You know, first I'm trying to get people's attention. Oh, I think you've done that. Certainly that lady over there in the fourth row. I don't really have a question. It's a statement. I think your girls were right. I'm very proud of you. And if there's any question about the negativity, any doubt about you being a lady after this show, there will not be. That's it. Thank you. What exactly is your relationship with your fabulous, famous dad? It's perfect. It's a perfect father-daughter relationship. I can't imagine anyone having a better relationship. Growing up, did you feel deprived on the one hand because he was so often gone in the pursuit of his career? Yeah, sure. I did. My mom said I used to, when I was very small, I used to cry when his voice would be on the radio. You know, we'd be in New Jersey and he'd be in Santa Barbara and doing a remote broadcast from like the Dorsey band or something that I would cry and we're talking about one or two years old now. I saw your dad not too long ago in Carnegie Hall. I mean, he's still fabulous. His voice still fabulous. I understand he's slowing down a little bit now. How is his health? We're trying to strap him to a chair. We'd like him to stop. He's terrific. As a matter of fact, excuse me, he had a physical two weeks ago and Barbara told me that everything is checking out 100 percent. He's in his 80s now? No. He's going to be 80. He's going to be 80. One of the only interviews I've ever seen him do, you actually conducted the interviews for Hour Magazine, the late lamented Hour Magazine back in the 80s. Your producer, Marty Berman. Marty Berman, our executive producer was executive producer of that program and he helped arrange that you interviewed your dad and what I want to do now is show an extended clip of that interview. Maybe the, I don't know if your dad's going to give any interviews anymore. He hasn't in years. I don't know why he would at this stage, maybe he will, but it could be the last interview he'll ever give of that depth and nature. So why don't we roll that for everyone. Here is Nancy and her dad. Can you be objective and tell me how, what kind of a father you are or is that too tough? No. I think you're a wonderful father. Not too tough, no. I've been, I have been at times a lax in my, very lax in my duties as a father in the early days because I was on the road all the time and away once at a time and then right on top of that kind of lifestyle came the divorce from your mother so that that wasn't very good as being a father. But on the other hand, I, you know, always loved you three kids and constantly, 24 hours a day, worried about you all the time, thought about you, wanted to do more things for you, but your mother would stop me every once in a while. She'd say, you're bored enough now, let's not do any more because you're going to spoil them and all that kind of jazz that went on. But I think objectively that's the only way I can explain it. I love being a father and a grandfather. I wish there were more grandchildren. I know you do. You know, with your sister and your brother. They better get busy. But they're still in a bullpen somewhere, they can't get about a bullpen. Okay. Now, how do you think Frankie and Tina and I have behaved as kids? How do we... I think the three of you were pretty good. I mean, seriously, you know, when you come from a, I think the world understands that the children are born of a family whose name suddenly becomes nationwide known or even internationally known, it can cause a problem. It has a many families that we both know and particularly in California I'm talking about or in New York, any part of show business. But I must say in all honesty for you and for Tina and Frankie that you've never disappointed me. Neither of you have ever disappointed me. Nobody's been in any serious problems. Nothing like that. And I'm proud of that. I look at families and I think to myself when I see something about a boy or a little girl or something where they just go astray, I begin to think about the parents and think to myself, boy, I'm lucky. One of my favorite albums was with Gordon Jenkins was September of my years. Yeah, it was a pretty marvelous album, yeah. That was the first time for me that I ever came face to face with the possibility of not having you with me. Oh, well, that ain't never gonna happen. No, I'm gonna be around a long time. Don't worry about that. You know, I was looking at that baby, they show that they show that shot yet. That's so cute. That is so sweet. That family, that family shot, that's so nice. Oh, there she is. Are there still stubborn misconceptions about your father? People keep writing lies about him. I don't know why, unless it's to sell magazines or books, they just love to go after him. I'll never understand it. That whole, all that mob stuff and... Well, some of that is accurate, but it's accurate in the sense of the showbiz at that time. You know, if you worked the night, I'm crying. If you worked the nightclub circuit, chances are, thank you, you worked for those people. I don't know what to call them, I mean, but they owned most of the clubs. And when I was doing my book in the early 80s, the people that I spoke with about it, they all said, sure, well, I worked for him, too, or I worked for them, or whatever. My dad just seemed to be singled out as though he would actually do things that mobsters or wise guys did, which is absolutely ridiculous. I mean, you know he's not gonna do drug pushing, I mean, you know what I'm saying? It doesn't make sense. And the FBI has a file on him that goes from the floor to the ceiling two times. And it's all the same junk. I've been through it. I've seen it all. And it's just nonsense. But for some reason, I don't know whether it's people like to hear it, you know, maybe the Robin Hood thing, or it's the mythical... You mean the movie that he created with the Rat Pack, that whole... Well, that idea, you know, maybe that's part of it. I'm not sure. It seems like every time he gets knocked down a peg, though, he comes fighting back, and you know, I always think of the people who can't fight back, who aren't Frank Sinatra and who don't have that kind of power and talent, you know, are their lives just totally destroyed? I mean, you know what I'm saying, what happened? I think a lot of it had to do just with his ethnic background. I do believe there's still stereotypes and ethnic discrimination. And I think Italian-Americans really get the short end of the stick when it comes to... Oh, your name ends in a vowel, too. I know. I get a whole other bundle of baggage. Did you ever meet the Rat Pack? I mean, of course you did, but how did you get along with them? You mean Dean and Sammy? I mean, were you friendly? Did you get to know them? Oh, yeah. Were they really pals with your dad in the real sense? Absolutely. They're like brothers. Dean and Sammy are... Talk about Dean. Talk about Dean first. Dean was, is still, actually I saw him a couple of months ago, one of the funniest men you'll ever know in your whole life. He's got the biggest hands you've ever seen. He looks like he's wearing catcher's mitts all the time. He's sweet, he's kind, and I love him. Love him. Sammy was... You can't cry the whole time. No, Sammy was very special, and my dad used to say, as a matter of fact, my dad captioned the picture that's in my book, it says, he's holding Sammy up in his arms, and in the caption reads, he ain't heavy, he's my brother. Before that was him. How about Peter Lawson? Peter Lawson. Peter had troubles with substances and things, and it colored his life, but he was a dear man. I just wish he had been able to break free of the demons that he had. What about the whole image that your father through the Rat Pack portrayed? Macho, fiercely independent, iconoclastic, outlaws, was it accurate? That side of it, yeah. But there was the other side, too. It's like these pictures, you know, of me. The pictures of you. The yin and the yang of you. I said that women have two sides. I guess it's true of all people, probably. But they had so much fun. That's why this new book... Are you having a new book? What's it called? Not mine, somebody else's. Oh. I don't understand. Oh, the attack biography of... Yeah. I saw the same things, and I saw them with humor. I mean, they were so funny, and she's turned them into something ugly, and I don't understand that. Your father did a song for you. I think it was for you. Mike, what's the name of that? Nancy... With the laughing face. With the laughing... Nancy with the laughing face. Okay. Okay, we'll play that as we go to commercial here at Frank Sinatra and Nancy with the laughing face. I miss her. Right there. Nancy Sinatra. And gee, what a thrill each time I kiss her. Believe me, I've got a case for Nancy with the laughing face. He takes the winter and makes it summer. Yeah How do you feel about it's use in that particular context? I wish it had worked, I wish they had come out Oh me too, obviously Is that it? Play it louder Where you shouldn't have been a-messin' And now someone else is getting all your bets These boots are made for walking And that's just what they do One of these days these boots are made for walking Applause I think you look great, you have nothing to be ashamed of Thank you so much Thank you so much I'd just like to find out how you stay in such great shape Oh good question Well thank you for the compliment It's two things and I'm very serious about this But you have to talk to your doctor about it Number one is herbs, they're wonderful, they're all natural and they give you energy and keep your spirits up Get into herbs, they're great And number two? No, California, Warner Avenue Elementary School And was she snobby and a little star? She's never been snobby, she's never been the little starlet She's boringly noble Oh no, and next then? Isn't she beautiful? She is indeed And next to Bethie is Diane Sappenfield Diane came into our lives best in mind in what, sixth grade was it? Seventh Seventh grade And so we've been pals for all those years Has she changed much? Transform her? My late husband Milton Green met Nancy and introduced her to Jack Haley So that's how our romance began And she was brought to me at Glamour Magazine I was the beauty editor of Glamour And she looked like something from California Mouth? That was mouth? Never mouth But maybe a surfer girl Mouthy brown hair But within this mass of brown hair was this sweet little deer face And we spent two days at Kenneth's And we made her a lion in Maine And I remember that when we actually took the photograph There was a pair of white boots and a pair of black boots And I said, put one of each on And then that was part of her act after that She always had different coloured boots on Did you ever expect it would be so incredibly lasting I guess? Yes Because we're really along the same wavelength Early feminists Yep, definitely And interestingly enough, our husbands in 1985 died within two days of each other Oh, too bad So we were both But then I found Charlie Charlie, hey Charlie Charlie, you never had a friend for a dance?
