Search and rescue officials estimate that as many as 400 hunters are stranded in the areas of Autanum, Chinook, and White Passes
by a weekend storm that blanketed much of eastern Washington.
Lieutenant Ron Ward with the Yakima County Sheriff's Office says as many as 25 hunters were airlifted out today
and that darkness forced rescue efforts to end.
Now, according to Ward, the search has been hampered by snow with areas with drifts up to four feet,
making it impossible for rescue helicopters to land.
Many roads into the region are mostly impassable, so authorities have no way of knowing which hunters are in need of help.
This is as Rod Smith reports on today's rescue efforts.
