Distinctive, informative, entertaining, and award-winning, King 5 Television, in association with area businesses, continues the dedicated task of producing special programming that brings significant topical issues to the people of the Northwest. Since Companies That Care began in 1985, our locally produced programs have won well over two dozen local, national, and international awards, including the Presidential Award for Private Sector Initiatives. But the number of awards isn't as important as the fact that Companies That Care specials continues to perform the valuable community service of issue-oriented programming. We appreciate the support that these companies provide and salute their continued effort to make a positive impact on our community. Companies such as Northwest Subaru, Frederick & Nelson, Milam Recovery Centers, and Windermere Real Estate. All Companies That Care. I don't understand. I was a good husband. I gave my wife everything she wanted. I had nothing. I had a home, but no husband. Eighteen years of my life that company had. I was the best. He'd go to lunch and never come back. I liked him, but... Sometimes the last person to see an alcohol problem is the person who has the problem. Why me? Why? Beats me, pal. Call Care Unit, we help more people stop using alcohol and drugs in any other hospital program. Ever since King 5 began, we've worked to protect the precious place we live. Because the more the Northwest has grown, the more the environment has been threatened. There are bays in Puget Sound where the bottom is covered with sediments so lethal and toxic that they cause cancer in fish. Caring for where you live, looking at the problems and doing something about them. It's what Northwest people do, and it's what they expect their television station to do. For 40 years, it's been the King 5 difference. I'll be joining the King 5 Morning News Team beginning Monday at 6.30. Good evening, everybody. I'm George Michael and welcome to the Sports Machine. Tonight, through the use of the Sports Machine, here in Week 5, the Bengals remain the surprise of the NFL. On the other hand, the ranks of the undefeated, the Rams are no longer listed therein. In the world of baseball, the New York Mets Daryl Strawberry leads the Mets in the east. And it was indeed an explosive month for the plays of the month of September. You know the old saying goes that when it rains it pours. Well today the Bears defense poured all over the previously undefeated Buffalo Bills. See the Bears harassed Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly. They actually just destroyed the offense of Buffalo, held the Bills to zero offense rushing. Buffalo falls crushed by the Bears 24-3. Let's go out to Chicago. Walter Payton on the sideline with a few words of wisdom for quarterback Jim McMahon saying, hey now if you're really a man Jim you're gonna run the football like I used to do. Come on man I want to see you run the football. So sure enough the first touchdown of the day for the Bears would be set up by Jim McMahon. He'll call his own number, fake the inside handoff, he'll come to the right. Jim McMahon takes a pounding, picks up 16 yards. It would set up the Bears first touchdown of the game. To the second quarter of the game again Jim McMahon continuing to be the main man in the spotlight will look for Ron Mars. Now Jim McMahon who was running was doing all that you could ask a quarterback to do was also on target. Here over the middle to Ron Mars. Mars into the end zone 14-3 with a tremendous run. He outruns Mark Kelso. The Bears taking command of this game in the early moments they would never let go of it. Defensively they were spectacular. The Bills Jim Kelly he was sacked six times. Here Richard Dent gets him from the backside. For Buffalo this was not exactly the way Jim Kelly and the Bills had planned this game. No I knew I was putting the ball most of the time where I wanted to put it. We had some draw passes didn't have as great a time. It wasn't one of Jim Kelly's best games but I thought we moved the ball at times but again we just kept on screwing ourselves with penalties and stupid mistakes. What was probably the best play of the game here the Bears on their own 42. Neil Anderson on a reverse to Dennis Gentry check out the block. The block is thrown by the quarterback Jim McMahon that on Cornelius Bennett. As a result Gentry is able to scoot up the right sideline cut back against the grain a little bit goes into the end zone touchdown 58 yards by Gentry. The play however originally was set up by a key block. That block on Cornelius Bennett was turned in by quarterback Jim McMahon. I'm glad to play work for touchdown and that's my job. The guys there I'm supposed that's my block and I got in his way. Gentry ran it the rest of the way. I don't think anybody in this league goes out and hope they get the buzz like we got today so you know it was very you know very big sharp attack. This is how bad it was for the Buffalo Bills. Check out this play Ronnie Harmon he comes to the right whoops three Bears there goes back the other way giving up more yardage giving up more yardage. Mike Singletary gets him lose 24 on the play zero yards rushing for Buffalo as they fall 24 to three. The product the vehicles the testing grounds the results STP oil treatment is the edge. This is not the time to learn that all antifreezes aren't the same. What's in your radiator. Thanksgiving Day in Seattle 1948. Howdy Frank is that it. This is it. The Northwest was about to change forever. So this is it. This is it. Across town they were getting ready for the big high school football championship game and few people noticed a small van parked behind the stands. Well I hope this works. It'll work it'll work. Honey what's that gonna happen. Any moment now. Oh wonderful. Okay stand by everyone. And a camera. Live from the city. This is the Washington State high school. It was the first television broadcast in the Northwest. Take a look at this Frank. On Channel 5. That thing work. Live and local. Try to get your stuff. One of these Frank. My name is just a fad. From the very first day bringing home the best to the Northwest. And for 40 years it's been the King 5 difference. Registering to vote is easy. I registered to vote in 1974 when I was a high school senior on the day that Richard Nixon resigned as president of the United States because it demonstrated to me that our democracy really does work. It was a special day for me. I know it was a special day for him. Make it a special day for you. Register. If you're a new voter pick up King 5's invitation to vote at libraries our voter van or call 3 2 9 4 8 4 8. Giants linebacker backer Lawrence Taylor back from his 30 day suspension had an impressive debut this afternoon but the biggest reason that the Giants beat the Redskins 24 to 23 was Washington's inability to kick a field goal and an extra point. The Giants have now won seven of their last 10 meetings with the Redskins. Let's go to RFK Stadium nation's capital first quarter the third play of the game. Mark Rippon at quarterback from the right of your screen will come LT. Lawrence comes in he hits Rippon strips him of the football at the same time Giants recover they would kick a field goal take a three nothing lead. Now move with this game into the third quarter of the game. The Giants are leading 17 to 9. They're building control. It's third and 12 with a 28. That's Phil Sims looking for the end zone. He's got Odessa Turner touchdown 24 to 9. Turner hurt on the play in the end zone late in the third quarter. The Giants are leading 24 to 9. Mark Rippon starts the Washington quarterback come back looking for Ricky Sanders up the middle 49 yard touchdown. It's 24 to 16 Redskins are getting within striking distance. Move into the fourth quarter now it's 24 to 16 the Giants again it will be the combination of Rippon and Sanders. This time Sanders comes to the left of your screen perfectly thrown football on the target 24 to 23 at a 22 yard touchdown late in the game. Chip Lowell Miller who had missed an extra point early on can win it with a 36 yard field goal. The snap is good the hole is there the kick is terrible. It is low and wide to the left. As you watch Chip Lowell Miller in dismay and coach Joe Gibbs of the Washington Redskins he their head coach saying boy this has got to change something is wrong with the kicking game folks. I just had a bad day and I you know I let the team down and it's just not the way I'm supposed to kick and that's not the way I've kicked and I got to really get down to business and get after it. On the other hand for the Giants it's redemption for the 45 to 31 loss that they suffered to the Rams last Sunday. You know we wanted to establish a lot of things today of course we wanted to win get two games up on the Redskins and our rivalry against them and just to reestablish ourselves again after we went out last weekend and just let down completely. So I think we did we established the kind of football game we want to play hard and physical and we did it today. Phil Simms and the Giants edge the Redskins will be Houston Oilers shot the Eagles early on built a 16 nothing lead but in the end it was the Oilers who were shot. Their lead was wiped out in the second quarter. It was down the Oilers 32 to 23 for the Eagles this win snaps a three game losing streak. Let's go to the vet in South Philadelphia where the Boo Birds were out with justification early on. John Telchik would have his first two punts blocked. This one blocked by Eugene Seale. Chris Dashman picks up the football touched down that quick Houston. They then get a safety it was awful punting special teams play early on. The Eagles would lose all pro receiver Mike Quick. He'll lose him for eight weeks. This is Mike Quick. Over the middle he goes down then his hip watch his left leg. His left leg gets caught under him. Broken fibula left leg. Quick will be out at least eight weeks from the Philadelphia lineup to the second quarter of the game. Randall Cunningham who had a spectacular game again. Boy this guy can run folks. Randall Cunningham will come with an excellent pass. Is this a great catch? Gerrity one foot two feet. Excellent haul down by Greg Gerrity 16 yard TD. The Eagles take the lead 17 to 16 and then the best play of the game. Again it centers around Randall Cunningham. He'll roll to the left. Nowhere to throw. Plenty of room to run. Cunningham picking up his blockers as he goes to the 10. Now a cut back towards the center. Touchdown Cunningham. Eagles over the Oilers 32 to 23. Maybe the biggest surprise of the season has to be the Bengals. Last year the Bengals won only four games all year. The Bengals tonight are the only unbeaten team in the NFL. Boomer Esiason 332 yards. Three touchdowns. Cincinnati blasts the Raiders 45 to 21. Jay Schrader had a nightmare intercepted four times. Let's take you out to Los Angeles where one of the Raiders biggest fans will be on hand today. Magic Johnson on hand to cheer on the Raiders as they meet the Bengals. You know the Bengals never win in LA until today. This is the first quarter of the game. Raiders third and goal at the six. Schraders pass over the middle. Got a man picked off in the end zone. It's tipped. Intercepted by Lewis Billups in the end zone. Billups brings it out. 30 yard return. Schrader would be intercepted four times. Second started quarterback. He gets a signal from the bench. Looks down at the wrist and says let's see here. Find Tim Brown somewhere over the middle. So sure enough having checked off the armband out of the shotgun. Jay Schrader will look for number 91. The super rookie of the Los Angeles Raiders. Brown up the middle. Takes the pass from Schrader. Brown outruns a couple of Bengals. Has two more to go. He's got them all out in the distance. You do not catch Brown from behind. 65 yard touchdown. So it was 17 to 7 Bengals. Boomer Esiason what a day. 332 yards. Three touchdowns. This time Boomer rolls. He'll get hit as he throws but he's on the money. To Tim McGee. The Bengals would rip the Raiders. 45 to 21. Sam Weiss you call touchdown. The Bengals continue to be undefeated. Most of my friends don't know what they're going to do after graduation. But I've already locked in guaranteed skilled training in the Army. By now you can reserve even the Army's most sought after technical training. Up to 12 months in advance through the Army's delayed entry program. Sure, being a soldier won't be easy. But then nothing worth having ever is. It's the right gear to stay it out loud from the fans in the stands. And that's what it's all about.
