I'm back with Barney Fife, head of security for our show. You're darn right. And head of our comedy tally. You mentioned him earlier. Well. Steve Dacry. Let me tell you something. You know how a lot of people think I'm a magician? No, not actually. No, because of the karate. Oh, yeah, that's right. Quick hands, right hands. I was looking in this book, magic and magicians, and who do you think I saw? Who is that? You know, I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. I'm a magician. Yeah, I saw. Who is that? You recognize that picture? Tony Orlando. No, no. It's Steve. It's Steve. It's Steve Dacry. Yeah, he's open. He's a magician. He's open for, well, Bob Hope, Susan Anton, Don Rickles. He was on Bozo Circus. Did you know that? Seriously, he was Bozo's sidekick. Why is he working this show then? Well, I thought I'd bring him on. I mean, don't you want to see some magic, folks? You want to see some magic? He's on our staff, and I think we should bring him on. magic folks you want to see magic this guy has been on our staff ever since the show began as our talent booker he looks the talent on the show he no you're not great don't please don't pull a fast one I'm not pulling a fast one you'll see it for yourself hey you know you're in trouble when Barney Fife jr. says trust me on this one well you'll see it for yourself now Steve you got to tell the people I know you primarily I know I've seen you do a couple of magic things but right but primarily is the guy who gets all of the people on the show you know whether it's Ted Shackleford or whether it's a specialty act mainly the specialty acts and you and Trisha Daniels have been doing that very well for some time there's another part to your life right you also are the guy I was told earlier and tell me if they're just giving me a line on this you were the one the only one who could duplicate that Houdini trick upside down in the water escape actually a couple of other guys can do it but not I use the same method that Houdini did I had a problem with it actually I did it a couple years ago at Radio City Music Hall I almost died in the damn thing it was a you know you hang upside down and just before you go underwater they stop and they wait for my signal and I do some deep breathing I do my deep breathing and I say okay now and then they let the way they lower me in and lock me in and they said I said now they lowered me down so just my hands were in the water and they stopped for some reason and I let all the air out waiting to see what was going on and before I could take another breath they lowered it the rest of the way locked me in no I had no air and I figured I was going to pass out and you know that would be it I don't know how but I did I was still able to you know it takes like six weeks of of practice cardiovascular exercises to be able to hold your breath that long and two and a half minutes later I got out but it was a very close call thank heavens you do another thing sleight of hand sleight of hand yes now we're gonna just take one shot of you doing this because well have you ever seen a Martian I've never seen a Martian yeah well I just in my mind here I thought I did one here's a couple of Martians there's two of them right there you see I just keep them in my purse check are there any more in there Rick I don't see I know just two which one do you like the best just pick one um let's go with this one here this guy here all right place your hand right up here on the table all right okay now I'm gonna hold on to this one real tight right you hold this one very tight turn it over when I say three you say go one two three go did you see it go it's gone when you open your hands you'll have not one but two marshes oh come on yeah go ahead oh for heaven's sake Oh okay Steve what's the trick now because we work together I'm gonna show you the secret is I have three Martians you see I never told you that in the beginning only told you about the two of them these are the two I showed you these two here this one stayed over here in my pocket now how many are here but let me start again from the beginning there's three Martians remember I said there was a three Martians three Martians is what I started with these two go in my hand this one goes into my pocket now how many are over here I'm gonna say two are in your hand no see there's none now Rick they've disappeared completely this is just a map I'm gonna show you how the trick really works you see if I take this one and cut it down the middle it makes two of them see now that we have two I can explain to you how it's done it's really done in steps ten steps I do them very quickly you'll see how it works watch one two three four five six seven eight nine ten did you see them jump across all right yeah you know I could imagine what you must have been like on a date what it wait a minute um I get I get over here that was good that was really good this is a trick with four little items one two three four okay you know what this is this is a die okay two of them is dice make this one good this is our last one right here they tell me so we'll use four okay we'll put one of them right in the box right here okay so you see what we have we get four dice all together right watch closely everything's gonna happen right here in front of you on the table the Houdini this guy will sit here one there one over here and one here watch closely now we'll start with the two in the front ready watch did you see that one go watch the next one jumps from here to there and then the last one the Houdini die from the box just like so gone and here it is whoa that's tough to do of course Rick this just went gold I'm very excited about it Magic Secrets the 20,000 units is gold it's just past that and I know you can get it in a lot of the video and toy stores around the country boy do you celebration I feel good saluting the 50th anniversary of the USO where did we get such men and women with President Bush general Colin Powell and direct from the Gulf general H Norman Schwarzkopf thank you you are going Tony Danza Frank Sinatra Tom Sellett the Pointer sisters Merle Haggard James Woods Bob Hope and more with 4500 troops to welcome home America Sunday we got a guy known worldwide as fun-loving Luke Duke of the Dukes of Hazard and he's on Broadway now doing real well let's catch up with Tom Wopat oh great just having a ball how you doing man I've been working eight days a week yeah I hear you've got a schedule that is just a you know yeah I've been doing Broadway for the last three and a half months I started the first of the year in City of Angels and then on my days off I've been going back to Nashville to finish a new album for epic records so got a got a playful you really and you know when I mentioned you before you came out we were talking earlier tonight yeah these people went crazy when I said Luke Duke well you know that's uh it was a phenomenon it was something that it was one of the top ten shows the 80s mm-hmm it was a gas we ruined a lot of cars how many of you had to guess how many did you go through that's the first time I've ever been asked are probably about 150 of the Dodges I guess yeah right about two or three times that many of the cop cars probably about 500 altogether let's forget that you've asked that I've been asked that so many times all right did it help or I think the overall question really now that now it's all distilled did it help to be Luke Duke or has it hurt you in a career sense well the big the problem with it I mean it was great in a lot of ways by itself it was wonderful the problem with it is that it really didn't do anything for my credibility either as an actor or a singer so what it did was it gave me a lot of you know box office it gave you a name so it's opened the doors a few places but it hasn't helped convince anybody of anything so I've kind of had to reestablish some some things fortunately in Nashville and in New York I've had real good luck oh obviously yeah you stay in touch with John Schneider whose birthday is today his birthday is today yeah I saw Schneider a couple days ago I was they had a birthday party for him Saturday night in Manhattan and he's there working on another show called Grand Hotel so we got together afterwards and we had a couple of drinks and ate birthday cake and carried on mm-hmm like you guys can do yes we can carry on mm-hmm knows and the play is now if you had a chance to do the play or have a number one country album and you had a choice whoo now that's hard that's a hard one to pick see the country album I could work off for a long time you know that's the deal is that what you have a country hit it goes on I mean it's the Lord the kind of way like it was but it's getting more like pop now but it still is they're very loyal yeah great they're really great and the thing about Broadway is that one of those an opportunity like this comes along maybe once every five or ten years this this part is perfect for me City of Angels great show the music's by Cy Coleman and the and the book is by Larry Gelbart who wrote mash and it's just terrific the lyrics are by a guy named David Zippel and very very good books probably the best book been on Broadway in a while I think and it's about it's like a film noir kind of thing it's a detective story yeah and I play the Bogart kind of detective except these things like Frank Snotthorpe you know so you get to sing oh yeah I sing big time yeah it's great and you also get the women oh yeah you know that's so that's the story you know he's a he's a moral man in the immoral world and he's there there's one point where I come in after looking for this this lost gal mother her stepmother comes to hire me to look for her and I go through all the nasty parts of LA looking for and and I come into my apartment and oh switch on the light and about a being there she is on the bed naked uh-huh yeah well you know a blonde in your bed what more could you ask oh every night you get to see this every night eight times a week oh wow it's a you know it kind of makes you look forward to work makes me look forward to go to see the play city of a lot I will I haven't seen it but I got it I'm gonna be in New York pretty soon I'm gonna see it definitely Tom Wopat City of Angels and a country album coming out if you can get a Nashville again soon be right back this is
