Weekday mornings at 9 a.m. Hello, I'm Martha McSteen, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. I have an important message. If you received Social Security checks in 1985, you will get a 1099 statement sometime in January. It will show the total amount of Social Security benefits you were paid for the year. You may need this information if you file a federal income tax return for 1985. For most people, Social Security benefits may be taxable only if they had substantial income in addition to Social Security benefits. An IRS notice comes with the statement. It should be used to help decide if part of your benefits are taxable. Only one out of ten people will need to pay income tax on any of their Social Security benefits. If you have any questions about the information on this statement, call toll free, 1-900-200-1099. What's going on? Nothing Herb, absolutely and totally nothing. From ABC News, The Weekend Report, here's Jean Mazur. Good evening. President Reagan took to the airwaves tonight to ask the American people and the Congress to support $100 million in aid for Nicaragua's confra rebels. Opponents on Capitol Hill said U.S. military aid now could mean U.S. military involvement later on. But officials in Nicaragua have made no response to the president's speech. Our first report from Kenneth Walker at the White House. The president marshaled all the arguments used in 10 days of nonstop lobbying to make his case that the Sandinista government is an unacceptable danger to U.S. interests. This danger will not go away. It will grow worse, much worse, if we fail to take action now. The first threat, said the president, is Soviet and Cuban influence in the hemisphere. Established there, they will be in a position to threaten the Panama Canal, interdict our vital Caribbean sea lanes, and ultimately move against Mexico.
