And I'm Kathy Gertson.
Tonight, there's good news for South Seattle residents waging war against drugs and crime.
It's the first payoff for the citizens who are fighting back.
They're going all out to help police make the community safe.
As Len Cannon reports, it's a tactic neighborhoods all over Seattle are starting to use.
In the past couple of years, the drug business has exploded in South Seattle, along with
it an increase in burglaries.
The activity has often overwhelmed the police department's South Precinct.
Then folks decided to give them a hand.
Earlier this year, the South Seattle Crime Prevention Council was formed to restore both
pride and safety to the neighborhoods.
Volunteers started cleaning up graffiti here on Rainier Avenue and informing police of
drug deals and crack houses.
As a result, there were fewer dealers on the streets and several crack houses have been
shut down.
There's no question that the recent drug epidemic involved...
Tonight, the council gave the good news to about 50 South Seattle residents and a few
police officers.
Through the first two quarters of this year, crime is down dramatically, thanks to improved
neighborhood awareness programs like the Community Hotline, manned by volunteers who relay information
to police.
So far, police have received 359 calls on drug activity.
