Well now I'm sure everybody's thinking how accurate was this story about Babe Ruth. Well let's just say that Hollywood didn't want to tarnish the image of one of our favorite sports heroes. That's very much the way they did things back in the 1940s. The more recent John Goodman version was probably a lot closer to the truth but this movie had something that all the other pictures about Babe Ruth did not have. This movie had the assistance of the babe himself which we mentioned before. He along with Bob Considine wrote the autobiography which was the basis for the screenplay. Now by the time the movie went into production Babe Ruth was seriously ill but he insisted on visiting William Bendix on the set all the time. We mentioned before that when they filmed at Yankee Stadium Babe Ruth left his hospital bed to be in the stands and when the picture was completed he did attend the premiere at New York's Astor Theater. It was one of the last things that the great Babe Ruth ever did. Two weeks later August 16 1948 Babe Ruth died at the age of 53. Next on AMC, Jimmy Stewart tries to get away from it all in the family comedy Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation featuring Maureen O'Hara. Next on AMC. Well, think about your last vacation. Did everything seem to go pretty well? I mean, just the way you planned it? If you answered yes, the question is, are you really telling the truth? It seems that everybody has at least one vacation disaster, no matter what happens. In the movie we're about to see, Jimmy Stewart plays a banker who takes his family on one of those ill-fated vacations and everything happens. Now, some of the events in the film seem just a little bit too real. It's because probably the screenwriter, Edward Streeter, was the only successful Hollywood screenwriter who was also the vice president of a major New York bank. So he makes a central character banker so that he could use some of his own experiences as a model. Since this was a 20th century Fox film, you'll notice a lot of Foxy references along the way. They're from the Fox Library as well. We'll be back with James Stewart in a great classic, Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, right after this. Thanks for watching.
