In an exclusive interview on the Nightly Business Report today, Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Alan Blinder said the economy is showing fewer signs of slowing after five interest rate increases than he would have expected. He said the Fed is watching and waiting. His comments, along with a weaker dollar, helped push bonds and stocks down, but the markets recovered most of their losses late in the day. The Dow Industrial Average closing down only four and three-quarter points. Both the Nasdaq Composite and the American Stock Exchange Index posted modest losses. On the corporate front, Sprint Corporation said it's joining three large cable TV firms, namely Telecommunications Inc., Comcast, and Cox Enterprises, to offer local phone services and set up a national wireless communications network.
