Judge Clarence Thomas overcomes 11th-hour accusations of sexual harassment to win the confirmation of the Supreme Court. Hello again. The 52-to-48 vote was the closest in this century for a successful nominee to the high court. Skip Lozier reports live. Clarence Thomas and his wife are smiling tonight, their devastating ordeal finally over, but his margin of victory was very small. The yeas are 52 and the nays are 48. The nomination of Clarence Thomas of Georgia to be Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court is hereby confirmed. Yes! It's the answer to a prayer for the family and friends of Clarence Thomas in his boyhood home of Pinpoint, Georgia, and their joy is overwhelming. But Thomas' mother has not forgotten her son's anguish and what pulled him through it. With all his travel, he went through. God brought him through. And I know God had the last word. The newest and youngest Supreme Court Justice was at home with his wife when he was confirmed. He emerged in the rain tonight to thank his family, God, and the American people. I'd like to thank this country for the things it stands for and the people for the things that we stand for, our ideals. And I'd like to think that at least in my life and our lives that we can uphold those ideals. Anita Hill was back at the University of Oklahoma Law School today trying her best to stay out of the limelight. Hill says she did the right thing by, as she puts it, telling the truth, and she hopes other sexually harassed women will follow her lead. We should continue to come forward, and I hope that no one will feel that they could not come forward. What does Thomas' mother think of Anita Hill? And you don't get angry. You love your enemy as well as you do your friends. The Hill-Thomas controversy has created deep divisions in the country and in the Senate, where the usual comity was replaced by acrimony. But tonight, Thomas called for healing. But this is more time for healing, not a time for anger or for animus or animosity. President Bush phoned Thomas tonight to congratulate him, Mr. Bush calling Thomas a man of honesty, dedication, and commitment. Live in Washington, I'm Skip Locher. We thought you would like to know how your senators voted and what they had to say after the vote. On the Missouri side, Senator John Danforth, Thomas' chief advocate, voted yes. Danforth says Thomas will surprise many people with his performance as a justice on the Supreme Court. Senator Kit Bond also voted yes. He says Thomas is a man of the highest integrity. On the Kansas side, Senator Bob Dole also cast a yes vote. He says Thomas will be a better and stronger judge because he withstood questioning about allegations of sexual harassment. And Senator Nancy Casabon, one of two women in the Senate, she also voted yes. Casabon says it would have been unfair to destroy Thomas' nomination solely on the testimony of one person against him. The three-day Thomas Hill hearings contained high drama and even a few low blows, and it was well watched. And a good many viewers also tuned in for this afternoon's final Senate debate and vote. KCTV's Brent Huntsaker watched with a class from Rockhurst College and later sampled opinion in Waldo. Mr. Lugar. Mr. Mack. This was an assignment for a class in global studies. Now, most of these students already have career goals in mind. Few include public office, perhaps even fewer after the Thomas hearings. Well, it's rather disheartening to see that our political process has become so demoralized. The mudslinging has to stop. I mean, it's evident that Americans like sensationalized television just like they like the love connection. Eleven of the thirteen students who watched the final vote with us agreed with its outcome. The choices on the menu at Waldo Pizza tonight were easier than the choices presented by last weekend's testimony. These women opposed the Thomas nomination, but that does not necessarily mean they sided with Hill. I think the truth probably laid somewhere in the middle. I think both probably believed what they were saying. I think some of the things that Anita Hill complained about were somewhat petty. If she felt that strong, then I think that it was something that she should have come out and said before. Professor Hill returned to class today at the University of Oklahoma. Judge Thomas is headed for the Supreme Court. Both say their lives have changed. Many of those we talked to this evening say the process they endured must change as well. Brent Hunsaker, KCTV News. Of course, all the debate over sexual harassment took the focus off the broad question of what Clarence Thomas' presence means on the Supreme Court. Most court observers say his confirmation will undoubtedly accelerate its march to the right. With Clarence Thomas now on the bench, it is more likely that in the near future, the Supreme Court will ease requirements for school desegregation, cut back on affirmative action programs and other protections for minorities and women, get tougher with reporters in freedom of speech cases, further crack down on the rights of the accused in criminal cases, and overturn the basic right to abortion. Thomas is expected to be sworn in next Monday, and ironically, one of his first cases will deal with sexual harassment. While Thomas' confirmation was squeaking through the Senate, legislation to establish a tall grass prairie preserve fairly sailed through the House this afternoon. By a vote of nearly three to one, representatives said yes to an 11,000 acre prairie ecosystem on the Z-Bar Ranch about 30 miles east of Emporia. The most vocal supporter of the preserve is Congressman Dan Glickman of Wichita, who we talked with by satellite right after the vote. Still ahead is the Senate. You're halfway there. Do you expect the sailing to go so smoothly there? Well, I hope it will. I'm not sure. Neither of our senators have committed against this proposal, and neither have committed for it. And the ball is in their court, however. It is up to the Senate to act. And if both senators choose to get involved and try to work something out here, then I think we can get something done, get to the president's desk for signature. But if the senators decide not to want this park or this monument, then the issue is dead. So it really is in their hands right now. The campaign for a tall grass preserve has drawn heavy opposition from Flint Hills ranchers, who fear it would open the door to Park Department condemnation of their land. Round two began today in the battle over a proposed landfill near Hodge Park in Kansas City. Today, the new Board of Zoning Adjustments got a firsthand look at the property, but that's not all they saw. People opposing the landfill welcomed the committee as well. They followed the board around, as laid law executives showed where they proposed to build the landfill. Tomorrow, three days of hearings will begin on the landfill proposal. The Kansas City School District is asking a federal judge to order the state of Missouri to resume payments for the construction of schools. The district is undergoing a multimillion dollar construction program, and school officials say it will run out of money unless the state starts making payments. District lawyers say the school district cannot afford to pay contractors without the state's financial backing. The construction program is part of the court order desegregation case. There haven't been any escapes from the McCune Home for Boys since angry residents from that area met last month, but they're not holding their breath. Many residents of the Blue Hills neighborhood in Independence spoke to a special Jackson County committee tonight, and after numerous car thefts in their neighborhood over the years, the residents want the escapes from the Boys' home stopped. And they were avert to the fact tonight that something would be done. I worked really hard to get out to Blue Mills to buy that house, as I'm sure a number of the other residents have. If that facility was around where I live, I would be a very, very disturbed resident. People wouldn't see my yard at night or through my pasture or hide in my barn or whatever to steal my vehicle. So we intend to get something done, believe me. Jackson County Legislator Fred Arbanis said he hopes his committee will decide in the next two weeks what needs to be done to prevent the escapes, and he plans to solicit the money needed from the County Drug Commission by the end of the month. Kansas City firefighters are investigating a suspicious blaze at a school. The fire started inside a classroom at the Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School. About two dozen people were inside at the time of the fire, but all were evacuated safely. Firefighters say it appears that the blaze was intentionally set. Firemen say water pressure was a big problem last night when they tried to put out a blaze that destroyed a building at Watkins Mill State Park northeast of Kansas City. The fire, believed to have been caused by an electrical problem, destroyed one of two buildings at a State Boys camp that's on the park grounds. The building housed a dormitory, dining room, staff offices, and library. Firemen say they had to haul almost all their water from a nearby lake because a hydrant virtually right beside the building had almost no water pressure. Local water district officials say they simply don't have sufficient water supplies to provide fire protection to the state park and have urged the state to put in its own water storage tank. A tanker truck filled with anhydrous ammonia overturned near Camden Point north of Kansas City today. The accident happened near Highway EE and Interurban. It released a cloud of ammonia over the area and surrounding fire departments were called in to disperse it. Authorities evacuated a two-mile, mostly rural area for a time. No one was injured. A brief court appearance this morning by the owners of the puppy mill, raided three weeks ago near Odessa, Missouri. Aga and Kerry Hassan are charged with misdemeanor counts of animal abuse and neglect. Aga Hassan today pleaded not guilty and is due back in court in three weeks. A plea is still pending for his wife Kerry, who will go before the judge again next week. So far, just about half of the 58 dogs and puppies have foster homes. An LSD chain that started in the Midwest and ended in South Carolina may have been broken up in Missouri. Yesterday, the Missouri Highway Patrol stopped this man on the right, 29-year-old William Remick, for speeding on I-70 in Lafayette County. A search of his van turned up marijuana and more than 11,000 hits of LSD. The Lafayette County prosecutor says he has information the LSD was made in Nebraska and was being delivered to someone in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Remick is behind bars on $200,000 bond. He faces 20 years to life on drug charges. Well, it looks like Secretary of State James Baker's multiple missions to the Middle East are about to produce results. After meeting with the Syrian president, Baker says he's on the verge of sealing arrangements for a Mideast peace conference. He says progress has been made on the issue of Palestinian representation, the major issue blocking the talk so far. Health officials have a warning for parents tonight. How would you like to sell your home but not get the money? KCTV's Stan Kramer says that happened to a Kansas City, Kansas woman when a mortgage company paid her and her savings and loan company with bad checks. He has more in tonight's call for action report. This is the woman's house. She sold it for $120,000. In any real estate deal, a mortgage company has a responsibility to collect the money and pay it out to those who deserve it. In this case, the payout was with bad checks. Sheila Schaucky learned the bad news when her bank said the check was no good. Then I just went berserk and I've been that way for four days. Sheila's bad check was for almost $17,000. Others went to her savings and loan and real estate companies. How did the mortgage company explain it? He just said, I'm working on it and he was just very arrogant about it and thought I was just kind of a bother to him. You know, asking all these questions about something so petty, you know. The mortgage company is called Prime Mortgage near 105th and Metcalfe here in Overland Park. One of the principals of the company says it was just a problem of closing one bank account and opening another. The company claims the bad checks were mistakenly written on the closed account. In recent days, Vice President John McHugh, who wouldn't talk to us on camera, made the money good to Sheila and the real estate company. And the day we stopped by, he sent a cashier's check for more than $90,000 to Sheila's savings and loan to pay off her old mortgage. If you're thinking of selling your home, it's important to remember that mortgage companies are not regulated like banks and savings and loans. It's a case of simply having to trust that they're going to manage your money properly. With Call for Action, I'm Stan Kramer, KCTV News. Stan says demanding cashier's checks is not a bad idea if you use a mortgage company in the sale of your house. Kansas City's weather brought to you in part by the people of Cellular One. Call 1-800-IMAGINE. Well, the winds are kicking up. Unfortunately, they're going to kick up more than the dust, aren't they? Yeah, there's a lot of stuff floating in the air this time of year. They've had the harvest going on for the past week or two, or several weeks as a matter of fact. And still a lot of pollen. We haven't had a good hard freeze yet. So that's going to cause some problems for folks with allergies and respiratory problems the next several days. We'll have some winds up to 30, 40 miles an hour by Thursday. Today was a nice one. If you were out in the sunshine, it felt pretty good. 62 for the high. Pretty nippy this morning though at 36. In fact, that 36 degree reading was just four degrees off the record low at 32. So way back in 1891, normally we should have a morning low around 49 this time of the year. Currently it's clear and temperatures of 48 at KZI, 53 downtown, and 45 here at the weather center. Don't think it's going to get too much colder tonight. The humidity at 49 percent. Winds very light from the southeast. The barometer is currently rising from 30.02. Sunrise tomorrow, 729. Sunset tomorrow evening, 639. First thing this morning, we had a thick band of clouds running right along the jet stream from the northern plains down through the Kansas City area. Now to the west of that, the skies are sunny all day. It was very hot. And to the east of it, nice and chilly, we were in the transition zone. And as the jet moved overhead, the clouds kind of thinned out and we had plenty of sunshine today. But it's kind of ironic as our upper level winds die down, the low level winds, the surface winds will be picking up over the next several days to 30, 40 miles per hour. We're already seeing some high winds develop up along the eastern slopes of the Montana Rockies up to 70 miles per hour tonight, and that'll spread down into Colorado by tomorrow. Fire danger is going to be very high because of the winds. The dry conditions don't make things any better. So dry, dusty, and hot for the next several days, what it looks like. Eastern Seaboard, different story. Cool air slamming into a lot of tropical moisture. They've got showers dotting the coast and heavy rains in southern Florida due to tropical storm Fabian, which is setting right over Cuba tonight and will spread more heavy rains into Florida through tomorrow. And a lot of flooding is going to be a problem there. As for Kansas City, had sunshine all day, generally clear skies coming our way tonight. Temperatures are the coldest to the east of us, 49 St. Louis, 38 Chicago out west, Wichita 54, 59 in Goodland. So we'll probably cool a few more degrees tonight and then actually warm up between midnight and sunrise. Tomorrow looks like a nice sunny day. Gusty south winds by the afternoon and the daytime high is up to the mid 70s. 80s just to the west of us around Topeka should shove in by Thursday. So for Kansas City tonight, generally fair skies, light winds, the overnight low to 40 in the next couple of hours. Then by morning we'll be back up to around 43, 65. By noon the winds picking up to 25 miles an hour in the afternoon and a dry, dusty high of 75 in the afternoon with 25 percent humidity. Very, very dry. Even windier on Thursday with a high of 84, Friday breezy 78 and partly cloudy. Over the weekend, highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s and the extended outlook on into next week. Hold some promise for rain about the middle to end of next week. In fact, pretty good chance it looks like, but temperatures don't cool down much. 84 on Thursday, high temperatures hanging in there. 84, that's pretty close to a record. Not 4. I wouldn't doubt it. Well, time for a little college basketball. The season is upon us, huh? Tigers worked out today, the Kangaroos started. We'll tell you all about it coming up. The Pirates who lead it three games to two will send Doug Drabeck to the mound to try and end it. And of course, Atlanta pitches Steve Avery who won game two for the Braves. And you can see it only here on KCTV starting at 730. You know, the Chiefs haven't won in Denver since 1982. But Milehawks Stadium is also a house of horrors for their head coach. Marty Schottenheimer has never won there either as a coach with the Chiefs or Cleveland. Sunday, the Chiefs will play the Broncos to maintain sole possession of first place in the AFC West. And they'll face a much improved team offensively according to Schottenheimer. Great speed and you know, he's a guy who's a threat not unlike Harvey as an example to go the distance anytime he gets the ball in his hands. Vance Johnson's been out some but it's being worked back into it now. And you know, I don't have to talk about John Elway. I mean, you know, that guy's been a thorn in my side for many, many years as it has, I'm sure, the Chiefs. As college basketball practice officially opens, Kansas announced they have suspended guard Sean Tunstall from the team for what were called undisclosed violations. He'll have to sit out the fall semester. Meanwhile, the Missouri Tigers held their first practice of the year in Columbia. Norm Stewart was in a jovial mood as he took his team through their paces that included Jamal Coleman, who's still awaiting disposition of theft charges against him. Stewart's optimistic and is also glad his assistant coach was cleared of NCAA wrongdoing and his back. We have a former insurance executive, Rich Daly, who is back with our staff. And I'm really, I'm really pleased about that. I think all of our guys know Rich because he is, he is on the recruiting of most of them. I don't think there's any doubt now that the league is established so well that I can see, for instance, I can see the possibility of six teams being in the NCAA. I can see all the teams being involved in the postseason play. And UMKC opened practice this afternoon. Their fifth season in Division one hopes are high over there. In fact, guru Dick Vitale picks the Kangaroos as the number two independent in the country. And he also named Ronnie Schmitz to his all offense team. Leif Lysik has more. The Kangaroos return all five starters from last year's squad that went 15 and 13, including big man David Robinson and high scoring Ronnie Schmitz. We really have the depth that we lacked last year inside and we have a lot of players that are coming on strong and I hope it continues to practice. Schmitz averaged 19 points a game last season and only two active players have scored more career three pointers. But this year, the junior guard is looking at knocking down some team goals. Really, I'd like to see the team come out. I think we can finish better in 1711 than they predicted. And I'd like to see us possibly get a postseason bid. I think this year we got a real good chance. I think we have a great bunch of guys coming back and I think that's team goal and I think everybody's striving for that. We first started the program. We were halfway decent inside, but had no outside at all. Last year we had the outside, but then when Dave got hurt, we lost her inside. And now if we keep everybody healthy, I think we can have a balanced attack. And that's what it takes in order to win. No doubt about it. The UMKC should be much improved this year, but with games at Oklahoma State, at Southwest Missouri State, at K-State and Nebraska, it won't be easy. Leaf-Lysak KC-TV Sports. This kid's got a tough schedule coming up this year, but it just keeps getting better and better. Boy, if you haven't gone to see the Roos play, do it this year. Make it a point to get down there.
