KMGH-TV. This is Colorado's number one news at five with Bertha Lynn, Ernie Bjorkman, Jeff Passeldt on sports, and meteorologist Pam Dale. Colorado's seven news starts now. In just one day, O.J. Simpson gets a new lawyer and an alibi. The football hero's new attorney now says Simpson was at home waiting for limousine to the airport when his ex-wife was murdered. Good evening everyone. Thank you for joining us. I'm Ernie Bjorkman. And I'm Bertha Lynn. We'll have more on that Simpson case in just a moment, but first, a major development in the search for a missing young girl from Greeley. Nine-year-old Candace McLean has been missing for nearly two weeks now, and it appears that case is about to be solved. A search team right now is in the Raywa wilderness area where the girl was seen last, and our Mark Hayes reports to us now live with this story. Mark, what's the hot tip that police have? Well, Bertha, we have been told to wait right here at the Raywa trailhead by Larimer County Sheriff's Office. They told us they will come and get us when it's over. They believe they have some solid information as to the whereabouts of Candace McLean and 42-year-old Gary Ford, the man they believe abducted her. Now, just moments ago, I saw a Larimer County Sheriff's Office cruiser scream by here going at a high rate of speed headed about six miles north towards Glendevey Ranch. Now, we don't know if the ex-wife of Ford is providing them with the information. They would not elaborate as to the tips that they did receive or the information that they have now leading them to this area just north of here, but they did say that they were reasonably confident that they could wrap this up within the hour, and that was at about 4.30. So we will continue to monitor the situation. We, as I said, we have been told to wait here by law enforcement officers, and we will continue to monitor the situation and bring you the latest developments as they happen. Okay, Mark, thank you very much. We'll check back with you about 5.30 to see if there's any late developments in that. Thank you, Marques. Well, just as investigators are believed to be closing in on O.J. Simpson, his new attorney has offered an alibi, making this a case that's more complicated as a murder mystery. Jane Hamden is monitoring the story for us from the Satellite News Center, and she joins us now live with the latest. Jane? Well, Bertha Simpson's former attorney, as you say, stepped down today. He said he was too busy and too close personally to Simpson to take on the case, but within hours, the new attorney said that O.J. Simpson has an alibi. Lawyer Robert Shapiro says at the time of the murder, Simpson was at home, waiting for a limousine to take him to the airport for a scheduled trip to Chicago. He says Simpson is depressed by the loss of the mother of his children and is under a doctor's care. Meantime, the family of murdered model and waiter Ron Goldman shared their grief with reporters. Police say the 25-year-old was not involved romantically with Nicole Simpson. Colleagues say he stopped by her home to return a pair of glasses she had left at the restaurant. It doesn't surprise me that Ron would have been the person to offer to return Nicole's glasses. And a therapist of Nicole Simpson's is speaking out to say her client was afraid of O.J. Simpson. To the best of my recollection, she told me of several incidents where he said, you know, I'm going to kill you. If I can't have you, I'm going to kill you. Investigators are analyzing blood stains found in Simpson's vehicle and on his driveway. Of course, it has been a media circus in Los Angeles, and later in the news, we'll have an update from that city on developments in the Nicole Simpson murder case. Bertha, back to you. All right. Thank you, Jane. In medical news tonight, there's another case of the so-called flesh-eating bacteria in Denver, the third case in just two weeks. This while a woman continues to battle for her life with that bacteria. Let's get the latest from Lynn Setzer, who's live at Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital in Denver. Lynn, what do we know about this latest victim? She is a 34-year-old Denver woman who had a cut finger. That's all. But it got infected, and she didn't get medical attention until yesterday. Now she's in critical condition. Now, even though her case is the third here at PSL in two weeks, doctors say there's no need for alarm. They say tabloid newspapers are making a big deal out of a disease that's been around for decades. And if it's caught early, it can be controlled. I don't think people should be alarmed. This is a condition that's exquisitely sensitive to antibiotics if it's caught early. This particular patient had plenty of warning. She had an infection in her finger, and she drained the infection herself over the period of two days using a sewing needle. She actually stuck the needle in and squeezed the pus out. If she had sought medical help at that point, then she would have received antibiotics, and we wouldn't be talking to her in the television. Now, doctors have removed this latest patient's right breast, as well as most of the tissue from her pelvis to her armpit on her right side. They believe they do have the infection under control, and they're hopeful that she will be out of ICU by tomorrow. The other strep A patient here at Presbyterian St. Luke's isn't doing as well. She is still fighting for her life. She is also a woman from Denver, 51 years old. Both of her legs have been amputated, as well as her right arm and her right breast. So this is a devastating disease, but it can be prevented if you get medical attention. Ernie? You know, the doctors are saying not to panic, but there's only two cases since 1989, and now we've got three in two weeks, so I guess there's something to be concerned about. Well, they're saying it's a case of statistics, that they don't expect to see many more cases this year. Okay. We'll wait and see. Thanks, Lynn Sensor. Denver police confirmed this afternoon they have found the gun used to murder Capitol Hill businessman Tom Haller, and detectives have made another arrest in that case. Shane Davis and Steve Harrington were convicted of killing Haller and beating his wife. Today, police revealed that a tip last week led them to a gun that, according to experts, fired the fatal bullets. Police arrested Davis' brother, Rodney Lewis, who allegedly sold that gun to another person shortly after the murder. Lewis is charged now with being an accessory to the murder after the fact. While engineers at DIA struggle to get the baggage system working, there is concrete evidence of another construction problem there. Concrete on the aprons alongside concourses A and B continues to sink into the ground. Contractors are back-compacting the soil there, trying to bring the apron back up to level. We are told that at one point there was concern that the sinking apron on concourse A was pushing in the basement wall and threatened the alignment of the baggage system, but engineers now say that is no longer a concern. Well, they weren't runaways, but what looked like tidal pools blocking traffic in Lower Downtown today. An accidental high tide slowed traffic this morning during rush hour. Just two lanes of traffic flowed through 18th and Broadway because of water surging across the roads. Workers blame a 19th century water main that burst under pressure from all the high water usage the past few days. Well, it is a murder case that has worldwide attention. Coming up in our update after sports, a live report from Los Angeles on the possible link between O.J. Simpson and his ex-wife's murder. Also ahead tonight, a financial rollercoaster ride finally ends for Eligeus. And the good times dry up at a popular play park. Stay tuned. The people who build Dodge Ram have a saying, big.
