Why have all these draftees of my orders sent me there?
On reporting, I found out that the regimental veterinarian had requested a person who could tell you.
I was that item. The man the hour and the need had met.
Horseback instruction was learned by doing. Stay on or fall off. One learned quickly to hold on to the front of the McClellan saddle.
To my surprise, my first extended ride, resulting in blisters on my rear-ending bow-legged walk, corrected itself inside.
Shortly after Pearl Harbor, the sudden arrival of new equipment was noticeable.
The regiment was pinpointed to go south, down to Baja, California,
get off when the roads ended, and saddle up in case the Japanese landed there as in the illusion.
It was a possibility then, especially if we had lost the naval battle at Midway Island.
Thanks to a few, we didn't, and the war moved on, and so did I to new adventures.

In the early spring of 1942, at the age of 20, I joined the Marines.
I shipped overseas and ended up on Guadalcanal in early 1943.
We were bivouac some area distance from Henderson Field and the cemetery.
Prior to my landing on the island, a boyhood friend of mine by the name of Ralphie Hall had been killed.
It was my desire to pay my respects to his grave.
I reached the cemetery and found row upon row of white crosses.
It was a tough task to find his grave.
As I was approaching a row of crosses, a voice within me sounded and said,
Over here, stupid.
I took two steps over and found his grave.
Immediately after, an explosion took place and where I had been standing was now a piece of shrapnel beside the textbook.
It was either a delayed bomb or a lobbed-in shell from some distance.
It could have even been a submarine from offshore.
I often wonder if that voice hadn't sounded.
Whether I would be here today to recount the story of how I found the grave,
my boyhood friend, John Femeli, Oradale, New Jersey.
