He was tall, blonde, and handsome.
A Hollywood dream.
And over three decades, Randolph Scott became a Hollywood legend.
You throw out your guns and come on out.
I ain't ready yet.
When I am, I'll be coming out the same time my gun does.
At age 50, when most actors begin to worry about more lines meaning fewer roles,
Randolph Scott became the ultimate weathered cowboy that audiences could follow across the silver screen.
I'd like to give you what you and your boys gave me.
Take the law into your own hands, Daddy.
No, just you.
In 1928, a young Southerner named Randolph Crane left his parents' North Carolina home and headed for California.
What was supposed to be a vacation turned into work when an old family friend, Howard Hughes, put a call into Paramount.
From that launching pad, Scott was able to get himself seen at the right time, the right place, and with the right look.

Scott showed a remarkable versatility in roles ranging from war pictures to romantic comedies.
And in 1940, he made My Favorite Wife, co-starring his chum and bachelor roommate, Cary Grant.
Let me ask you this. How long were you married to Ellen before the island?
Four years.
Why?
Well, I was with her for seven, so I claim we're on the basis of seniority.
But no matter what role he played, producers and directors liked him best in Westerns.
Between 1932 and 1960, Scott made Westerns nearly every year.
And in 1956, he teamed up with director Bud Beddicker.
Tough, adventurous, and thinking of himself as kind of a cowboy,
Beddicker would team with Scott to produce seven memorable films together, including Decision at Sundown,
where Scott played a bitter cowboy seeking revenge for losing his wife to another man.
Haven't you had enough hate for one day? If you killed Tatan 300 more, you still couldn't change things.
You were married, but you never had a wife. Do you hear me? You never had a wife.
They were unusual Westerns for that period.
There wasn't an obvious line between good and evil, and Scott wasn't always the clean cut hero.
Wouldn't you say you made your living as a gunman? I've turned a dollar with a gun.
You put in a lot of jail time? I've been in jail.
Beddicker said of Scott that he cared about the other actors in his movies and didn't worry about being upstaged.
In Ride Lonesome, Scott recognized the talents of a young James Coburn and asked Beddicker to give him more lines.
Me and you, we're gonna have to figure a plan. Find some way to get in between us.
Randolph Scott could play the cowboy tough, but he also had a disarming charm.
And unlike many other screen cowboys and roughnecks of his time, there was a graceful Southern style to Scott's masculinity.
