Good morning, I'm Tom Miller. This is NBC Nightside. The trial of four Los Angeles police officers charged with violating Rodney King's civil rights could be in the jury's hands later today. But first they're going to hear from one more defense attorney and then the prosecution's rebuttal today. They won't begin negotiations after getting instructions from the judge. The defense told jurors that King has repeatedly lied to keep from going to jail for violating the terms of his parole. Meanwhile, the city of Los Angeles is bracing for the worst. Foreowners have armed themselves with guns in the event of a repeat of last year's riots following the state verdict. Well I don't want to use it, but if I have to, I will. Police Chief Willie Williams does not believe violence will follow the verdicts, though police are barricading some station houses with sandbags. The jury in this case has virtually the weight of an entire city on its shoulders. They are simply 12 citizens whose decision is anxiously being awaited and then will be critiqued severely no matter which way they rule. NBC's Phil Schuman reports. The jury that will deliberate behind closed doors up on the eighth floor of this federal courthouse will no doubt be facing the most difficult decisions of their lives. There are eight men and four women on the panel, nine whites, two blacks, one Hispanic. Jury expert Elizabeth Loftus of the University of Washington gives us some insight into that process. I see problems in the selection, I see problems with people who might be very well meaning and wanting to be as fair as they possibly can, but perhaps because of fears of what happened in the past repeating in the future, they simply might not be able to. Defense Attorney Mike Stone talked about what he hopes the jury can do. The jury should make the decision, either these guys were out there doing the best, they're doing the job the best way they could at the time, or they were out there lying away and assaulting someone who, assaulting someone without justification. NBC's legal analyst Dan Kapless expects this jury to perform well. Jurers have a way of rising above the pressures of the moment, of putting themselves above the fray, particularly in a case like this where they've been sequestered for two months, they've been treated like judges in court, people stand when they enter and leave. Of course, once this is all over, everyone will want to talk to the jurors, find out what went on behind the scenes, the emotions, the ups and downs of the case. The big question, if any of the jurors will be willing to go public in such a controversial case. Phil Schuman, NBC News, Los Angeles. The federal government is asking General Motors to recall millions of trucks it built between 1973 and 1987. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration believes the placement of the trucks' fuel tanks poses a safety problem. The agency says the risk of fire in side impact crashes involving GM trucks is two and a half times greater than that of Ford pickups. The government has given GM until April the 30th to respond. Benjamin Chavis was named Friday as the new executive director of the NAACP. Chavis will replace Benjamin Hooks, who is stepping down after 16 years. In the early 70s, as a member of the so-called Roamington Ten, Chavis and nine others were sent to prison for firebombing a white-owned grocery store in Roamington, North Carolina. Chavis served over four years in prison, but a federal appeals court in 1980 threw out the conviction. In South Africa this morning, one of the African National Congress' most popular militant leaders was shot and killed outside his home in Johannesburg. Police said a man has been arrested in the shooting death of Chris Hany, leader of the South African Communist Party, which is closely allied with the ANC. Hany was a hero to South Africa's militant youth. Police would not say whether the suspect was white or black. U.S. military jets dropped bombs on an Iraqi anti-aircraft site Friday after they claimed they were fired upon. The incident occurred on what officials call a routine monitoring mission over the no-fly zone in northern Iraq. The area was set up after the Gulf War to protect the Kurds from Saddam Hussein's forces. Iraq understands clearly what its obligations are in regard to the no-fly zone and will be held solely responsible for the serious consequences of failure to comply with these obligations. The exchange marked the first hostilities in Iraq since February when two French reconnaissance planes were fired on. Bosnian Serb leaders are angry at the United Nations peacekeepers. The Serbs say they found ammunition aboard a UN relief truck outside of Sarajevo. Thursday, Serb troops claimed they discovered 48 boxes of bullets hidden on a clock carrying flour. Another search at a UN-controlled storehouse apparently revealed thousands of rounds of ammunition and bags of explosives. The UN has repeatedly denied Serb accusations of smuggling arms for Bosnia's Muslim
