54 people died today in Manchester, England as a British passenger jet burst into flames.
The aircraft never left the ground at the Manchester airport.
The pilot aborted the takeoff when the left engine started to burn.
The fire spread instantly as the jet came to a rest at the end of the runway.
There were 83 survivors and later in this hour we'll have more on this tragic airline accident.
President and Mrs. Reagan took a political break from their vacation to attend a Republican fundraising dinner in Los Angeles this evening.
The president, flanked by California's GOP leadership, lashed out again at the Democratic controlled Congress
and called on the gathered Republicans to join forces in electing a Republican Congress.

Another California official in California today.
Interior Secretary Donald Hodel met briefly with the governor at the state capitol.
Hodel has been traveling the country trying to convince people that his north coast drilling proposal is a good idea.
The governor has said he doesn't object to drilling of fisheries on the environment or protected.
Hodel says he believes the public is behind the plan.
Well, the people who have spoken have indicated that provided the right safeguards are there,
provided we proceed in an orderly fashion, cautiously, how are we?
Begrudgingly, I think they recognize that some of this is essential to the country.
Hodel believes some sort of off-coast drilling plan will be implemented by 1987.
Yolo County sheriff deputies were held at bay for hours today by a barricaded man armed with a shotgun.
The incident began when 25-year-old Randy Reed allegedly threatened a visiting mental health services worker at his West Sacramento trailer home.
Sheriff deputies were summoned and their special enforcement team evacuated the surrounding trailer homes.
The tense and potentially dangerous situation was resolved safely when negotiators talked the barricaded man into surrendering.
