Doug made commitments around the world. Doug convinced me to risk it all. And it was Doug who shipped everything with some company I'd never heard of. Screwed the whole thing up. And that's why Doug is locked up in the closet. Hello? You okay in there, buddy? Next time, make it FedEx, the most reliable express company there is. Can I come out now? No, Doug. I'm not finishing singing your praises. Coach, right over here. Well, that was quite a surprise allowing a risk guard to do a six-step rush receive into the drop zone. Well, I tell you what, this Boston team, they're tough, but, you know, toward then I knew they were faking. How? I hit them with a spectrograph gun. They're like thermals, they're sunspots, about 127, 128 degrees. So you knew they were ready for a course life? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, the spectro didn't lie. Well, of course it is the only beer that's frost-brewed to really cool down that thirst. Anyway, 28-second warning, no timeouts. Congratulations, coach. And after what you said about my gland problem? Max and I are... You hit? I... I... back to you. The Braves needed an extra innings, but they knocked off the Fills 3-2. It's just the second time this century the Braves have won 100 games. The other was just four years ago, but that was also the only time, since they started this postseason streak in 1991, that they failed to reach the World Series, denied by the Phillies in 93, whom they finished 10-2 against this year. Tom Glavin puts his ERA under three for the fourth time in his career. Even though they've sensed it for most of the second half, now the Indians and Yankees know for sure they'll see each other next week in New York. They got a chance to get extra familiar. The Slated Tuesday starters, Oral Hershizer and David Cohn, going head-to-head tonight in the J. David Cohn, if he's healthy, he will be the game one starter. So his last check out against native New Yorker Manny Ramirez. Look at the stop by Derek Jeter. They almost turned two on this great, sprawling play by Jeter. And Hershizer bulldogging it against Cecil Fielder and... Big guy! Crushes the hang and slider. His 12th of the year, Yankees break a school this time. They were still up a run in the fifth, 2-1. Cohn facing Marquise Grissom. Gets it up a little bit and Grissom... Waaah! By Andy Foxx! He's everywhere! Now he's in Whitefield making sliding catches to all in the eighth. You're not going to get to this ball right here, but watch the relay. Nice relay by Foxx. That's himself nice. The throw, the strong play. Are they going to send him all the way to send the case into the play? Oh, Posada's hanging in there! Nice play. They got it. There is no joy in Mudville. Casey is meat. Game tied at two. Ivan crews up with the bases loaded. Singles to right, Andy Foxx will come. Manny Ramirez is no Andy Foxx in right. Whitebox comes in as well. 4-2 Mike Stanton hangs one. The plate's being grabbed by Derek Geter, who had an outstanding defensive game. The eights pulled out in ten. 5-4 win this season, series 6-5. They'll meet the Indians in the postseason for the first time ever, starting Tuesday night in New York. Paul Osmacher picked the perfect seventh. He's given up just one earned run since mid-June. Lloyd and Romero Mendoza also picked school as relief, and Cohn proved himself sound for the postseason. I thought my stuff was fairly sharp and a little better than last time. I feel pretty good about it. Your arm feels okay? It feels okay, and obviously we're still in a situation where you have to see how it feels tomorrow and the next day. But for the most part, I thought I was sharper in terms of velocity and movement on my pitches. I wish I was a little better with my location on my fastball, but I take what I have. Well, Joe Torre's got some dilemmas he's got to deal with. Cecil's starting to get hot again. He's swinging the bat. We saw his 12th home run in the highlight. Nobody expected him to be healthy. He had a great postseason last year. But he's got to be tough. So we'll see what he does here in this G.H. slot. Because you've got Tim Raines. He hasn't stolen a base since May, but you can bring him off the bench, provide some speed. You can hit from that left side for you and right side. He's a switch hitter, but mainly from the left side. So he's got some options there. And then they picked up Stanley in the middle of the season. And Mike has been a clutch here. You can bring him off the bench for big hits that you might need late in the game where you can have Stanley hit and Raines run. He's got some ammo. He's got some options. And it's going to be interesting to see how he uses those coming to Tuesday's start of playoffs. That's one of the things that won the World Series for him last year was his awesome fans. Hershizer and Cone go Tuesday in Yankee Stadium. Hershizer, lights-on postseason 8-1, Cone's 4-3. A surprise, Mike Hargrove will be rookie Jared Wright in the Thursday's Game 2 slot going against Andy Pettit. Hargrove purposely shielding Wright from Yankee eyes in this series. Charles Nagy slides to third. It's either Doc Gooden, who's 3-0 in Jacobs Field this year. That's where Game 3 will be. Or David Wells, who has been hit hard by the Indians. An emotional night in Skydome. Check out Joe Carter. He's wearing number 43. So is Robbie Alomar, his old teammate at second base. That's in honor of Cito Gaffner who was fired by the Blue Jays yesterday. Sean Green will race home from first, loses helmet flying around those bases. Blue Jays take a 1-0 first inning lead. It's still a one-run game on the sixth. Carter again, annihilating this Mike Lucina pitch. His 21st home run of the year. 203rd home run as a Blue J. That's an all-time franchise record. And Joe does it all for Cito. As they pull it out, 4-3. Carter's heroics helped snap a five-game Blue J losing streak. It didn't help Gassley's cause either. Jelana wins for just the third time in the last 15. Lucina's final tune-up, 10 hits, four runs, three earned in seven innings. He'll take on Randy Johnson next Wednesday. Joe Carter won a few holdovers from Gassley's championship teams, and his reaction defines why Cito is known as a player's manager. Cito's a very important part of my life. And it was very emotional yesterday to see a person, to see him leave. It's just something that you could just tip your hat and say thanks for all the times that he did for us. All the times he did listen and care about you as a player, as a human being, and not just as a player. But you know, Robbie said it best. He's more of a father figure, a person you look up to, and a person that if you had someone there to emulate, he would be that person. Joe Carter and Robbie Alomar telling just how much Cito Gassley has meant to their baseball careers. Carter passes George Bell for the Blue J's franchise home run record. 354 career American League home runs. 151 of those came with Cleveland. The 10th season, he's had 100 RBI's. 90 seconds from now, the $3.9 million starts. Steve Avery changes his contract decision from theirs to his. This is the playoffs, man. None of the Bat Boys need to step up and make a difference. No Bat Boys, no bats. No bat? Let's just say the offense would suffer. One of the Marlins' ball girls is smoky. For the playoffs, a super spitball. Holy cow! Someone trips on a bat, and I got the whole city of Atlanta on my butt. We don't actually bat, but we do set the tone for the organization. I'd be a boss I've always wanted to have a big TV party, and I'd like the best spy to help me. That, my friend, is your brand new television. Check it out, fellas. Picture on it. Picture, picture. Let's begin one of these. It's like it was built for your hands. Wow. This is awesome. Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim. Tim's big TV party at Best Buy. Now that's a great idea. Deal of a Deal is brought to you by Best Buy, just the store you've been shopping for. Well, the Tigers have a chance to finish with a winning record, even though they lost today. We'll show you that in a minute, but it's amazing. When I went to spring training with them this year, 23 new guys on the roster. Nothing could have worked out better than Willie Blair has, but that's only the start. They've had a lot of moves that have paid off for them. Yeah, that's a nice pick-up, like you were saying, Willie Blair and Phil Nevin, but really these three guys kind of stand out in my mind when I think about it. Bob Hamlin getting released from the Royals and coming back, and bam, he hammers 18 home runs in 313 at bat this year. That's a nice comeback for the former Rookie of the Year. And then Brian Hunter, what a tremendous pick-up from the Astros. He's leading the American League, actually leading the Major League, 73 steals, 111 runs scored, and they said he couldn't play defense. That's one of the reasons they let him go. 990 fielding percents in 159 games, he's going to play 162 this year. But really the big pick-up, Angels gave up on Damian Easley, he bounced back, and 22 home runs. He's a 20-20 guy. 22 home runs, 26 stolen bases, but you only do that when you've got a manager that lets you play. And Buddy Bell has been tremendous for all these young players to get a chance to play. Look at these improvements. The last two they lost, they won 53 games and lost 109. They have a good chance of finishing 500 this year, they finished up with the Yanks. It is one of the great turnarounds of this decade. Ask Steve Avery and he'll tell you straight, he hasn't done anything to deserve the 18th start he needed to kick in a contract option that guarantees him $3.9 million next year. His last start was on the last day of August against his old Atlanta buddies who bombed him. But Red Sox manager Jimmy Williams came from Atlanta too, and today he turned the decision into Avery's. Avery, who had been pitching out of the bullpen, not pitching much at all, got the start in his home state of Detroit. He looked pretty good, Harold. Yeah, he pitched well. He got back to using his power pitch to set up his off-speed pitches, and that's what he did right there. Easley smoked when he picked it, but I tell you, he threw the ball really nice today. That's a good fight on it, good break.
