This is News 4 Tonight. Good evening. U.S. military has suffered its first death on the U.S. peace mission in Bosnia. An American soldier whose name has still not been released died in a land mine explosion today in northern Bosnia. The soldier was manning a checkpoint about 25 miles from the U.S. base at Tuzla when he apparently stepped off the road and onto a mine. He was taken to a mobile army hospital nearby where he was pronounced dead. Many of the American checkpoints are in areas where thousands of mines already have been identified. All soldiers understand that even though an area has been identified, there may be other mines around. They take nothing for granted. The dead soldier's name and hometown are being withheld until his relatives can be notified. On a campaign stop in New Hampshire, President Clinton said the death has not changed his mind about the mission in Bosnia. He extended his sympathy to the dead soldier's family and encouragement for the troops still there. We will continue to take every precaution we can to protect our troops as they work to secure an enduring peace in Bosnia. And all of our troops should know that today our thoughts and our sincere gratitude are with them. The American death wasn't the only incident in Bosnia today. Two British soldiers were cut in their faces when their vehicle was hit by sniper fire in a Serbian suburb of Sarajevo. Broken water pipes are causing major problems here in the metro area. Frozen pipes that burst are now thawing out flooding homes and businesses. And there is a major power outage downtown which doesn't help in the cold weather. News 4's Marcella Lee is live on 4 with more. Marcella? We have breaking news tonight. You see downtown Denver behind me. Well about a 10 to 12 block radius is without power right now. About a half an hour ago, public service company had to shut off power to buildings between Platt and California and 15th Street and 17th Street. There was apparently a fire in the Bank Western building that's at 17th and California. And the fire inside of that, the fire happened in a vault and inside of that vault, public service has some of their equipment. So in order for the fire department to go in and take a look, they had to shut down power. We will of course bring you more as more details become available. Back to you. Alright, alright Marcella and we understand too that you did some work on broken pipes today as well. Right, the cold has caused many major problems for people across the Denver metro area and we will show you that there could be more problems tomorrow. Freezes it and expands it and expands it at a certain point and what it does is it busts the pipe. Jeff Dozier is finishing up a 16 hour day. He's been repairing busted water pipes since the wee hours of the morning. We'll open up the wall and there will be a tunnel insulation in it but it's just not enough because the room is not heated. Water poured out of pipes all across the Denver metro area. Here at the King David Towers, the building's main hot water tank burst above the front door. It looked like a rain storm indoors at this office building at 1900 Glenarm. People armed themselves with vacuums and squeegees cleaning up water in flooded offices like this one at G.A. Wright Direct Marketing. This guy just got home and his basement is filled with water. Denver Fire Department's dispatch center was literally swamped with water related calls all day. Over 50 water related calls and probably 180 calls besides that. So yeah it's been a fairly busy day. Basements, outside wall tapes. Once again, there were some water problems at the Bank Western building and that is the building in which a fire was sparked in a vault. And that fire in that vault, that vault contained some equipment from public service company so public service had to shut down power to about a 12 block area downtown. We will head that way and get more to you as it becomes available. Alright thank you very much Marcelo Lee in downtown Denver. Now within the next couple of days this deep freeze is going to be just a memory and Glen Gerberg is in the weather center with the latest. Glen? It may not be a fond memory Linda but it will be a distant memory as temperatures are beginning to warm up. We still have one more very cold night to get through and we had a very chilly day today although certainly a vast improvement from yesterday. Here's how the high temperatures stacked up around the state today. We finally got into the, well teens in some areas, 17 in Denver otherwise a lot of teens around here. The mountains always stay a little bit warmer than us. They were mostly in the 20s. Western Slope, well Grand Junction had the warmest temperature of about 36 degrees. Western reading though, it's cold, the western slope is still doing a little bit better. The mountains though, very cold. Some of those readings well below zero and in the front range we're struggling to stay above zero as you get a little bit further out to the eastern plains alignment right now at minus 12 far exceeding where we expected that to go. As you get back into the foothills down sloping winds will begin to warm things up as we've already gotten reports in Kittridge it's 20 degrees there. So we do have a warm weather forecast coming up for you. We'll have the details on that in just a little while Linda. Alright looking forward to it Glen thanks. Well the heavy snow on the mountain continues to pose an all too real avalanche danger. In Chaffey County tonight a snowmobiler is missing after disappearing in an avalanche today. The man was on a snowmobile near Cottonwood Pass west of Univista this afternoon when he was caught in the slide. The search has been abandoned for the night. Rescuers will go back tomorrow morning with avalanche dogs. Parts of the country have been clobbered by snow again while in many spots the situation is cold, colder and coldest. Millions of people have died from the cold including three in Chicago where 17 fires were sparked overnight. Records are shattering across the middle of the country with temperatures as low as 69 below. In the east the snow is back. In some places more than a foot has fallen and in the south storms have brought down trees and power lines. This worker was shocked and sent running. We'll try to cut one line. Violent weather has left major destruction around Jacksonville Florida tonight. Trees and power lines were mowed down by strong winds and at least one tornado. Utility crews spent the day trying to restore power to thousands of homes in Jacksonville. One person died in the storm, a man who was hit by a falling tree when he went out to let his dog in. And the death toll in China continues to rise tonight after a magnitude 7 earthquake there this morning. So far more than 170 people are dead, 1,700 injured. The quake hit about 4 a.m. our time in southwestern China. It's a popular tourist region and now without water and electricity. But the airport is still open and is being used to fly the injured out to hospitals. Details reportedly from O.J. Simpson's deposition show he is claiming his ex-wife Nicole made up domestic abuse charges against him. That from excerpts of his deposition published in today's Los Angeles Times. Simpson reportedly claimed Nicole Brown Simpson abused drugs and left false journal entries about spousal abuse. He says it was part of a scheme to avoid their prenuptial agreement. Meantime, one of Simpson's attorneys, Effley Bailey, was found in contempt of court today. He has until the end of the month to turn over stocks he's holding for a former client and drug dealer or he could go to jail. Rapper and actress Queen Latifah was arrested today for allegedly having a loaded pistol in her car and possessing marijuana. That arrest came during a traffic stop for speeding in California. Last July, Queen Latifah was the victim of a carjacking. The London tabloids are reporting tonight that a settlement has been reached in the divorce between Charles and Diana. An unattributed report in Sunday's mail says Charles will buy Diana a nine million dollar house, provide her with a million and a half dollars a year to cover expenses and buy her a country home. The report goes on to say that the princess wants to remain a titled member of the royal family and be assured that...
