The Highway Patrol is deactivating its K-9 unit and rebuilding it. It's all in response to a controversial video showing a trooper kicking his K-9 partner. WRAL's Erin Coleman is here with more on the changes. Well Deborah, they will start by changing the breed of dog that they use instead of the aggressive, high-strong Belgian Malinois. They'll now use Labrador Retrievers. It is just one of many changes that came about because of two 15-second video clips. And we want to warn you, some may find them difficult to watch. When this cell phone video of former trooper Charles Jones kicking his K-9 partner went public, Jones was fired. When it was clear during an administrative hearing that his actions were consistent with the Highway Patrol's training methods, the program was suspended. There was no oversight. We did not know some of the things that were taking place until the hearing. Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety Brian Beatty ordered a review of the program in April. Now, the Highway Patrol is starting over after 18 years. We're completely disbanding the K-9 unit as it exists, or used to exist. We've hired a new K-9 training supervisor and we'll hire all new K-9 handlers. We'll also use Labs, a more passive dog, to only sniff out and...
