Today we're talking with women who've given up dieting and accepted themselves and their weight. Now by day, Denise Simone is a high school teacher and by night, she does stand up comedy. Wow, that's a change. How about during the day, can the kids be tough on you? Well, sometimes, but once they know me and they know I love them and I respect them, it's a really wonderful relationship. This is very important. I want to know how you cut through that because I am sure that there are a lot of large, if we say fat people, who really are the object of taunts and teasing. Well, it's not only children that do that. Men in suits do that. Oh, sure. But I think that what you really have to look at is I see myself not as a fat woman, but as a woman. And I think once that everybody stops seeing themselves as a person of a particular size or group, then you can be happy with yourself. So you don't, in other words, you can't show imperfection, you can't show vulnerability, and if they see that you are a happy, strong person, they'll get the idea. Well, I see myself as a role model for them, especially for young women who are overweight. Do kids ever say mean things to you? Sometimes. Well, what would they say? Oh, well, they'll call, you know, fat, you know, fat, look at the fat person, you know, just the same taunts that any large-sized person would get. Once they know me and once they realize that I'm funny, that I do, I go to the high school dances and I dance with the kids. I'm a good dancer. I play basketball in the high school, you know, basketball games with the faculty and the students. I can get the ball in, I can run down the court, and I think that what's important is that we all look at ourselves as for what we can do for people, for society, instead of looking and saying, oh my God, I'm a large woman, I can't do this, I can't do that, I can't go and impress kids that, you know, to be their best. If I don't feel my best, how can I teach young adults to feel their best? Did you try to play the game for a lot of years? In other words, try to diet, try to be thin? Absolutely, absolutely. I get the feeling you all are happier when you've tried that game, failed, and then you realize, hey, I'm not happy trying to do this. Life is not a dress rehearsal. This is my life. And at this weight, I'm comfortable with who I am. Okay. Now, also, where's Nancy? Hi, Nancy. How are you? I'm getting over there. Nancy is the, you're the head of Goddesses, right? And I want to find out what Goddesses is all about. Hi, Maury. How are you? Hi, how are you? Okay. Goddesses is an organization for large size women and men who love them. We've been doing this since 1987. Oh, it's a social organization. It's a social organization. It kind of fix people up. Where women, yes, where women come to parties and meet men and men just adore the large size women. We have dances. We have shows. We have fashion shows. We have standup comics. And we've had Denise on many times. She's great. She's been at the Goddesses many times at the parties. And she's also been master of ceremony. And we had a lot of marriages through this. Okay. Lots of marriages. Well, that's great. Now, Denise, in your standup act, you don't do fat jokes, do you? No, I don't do self-deprecating humor. Society makes enough fun at fat people without fat people making fun of themselves. Okay. But you know what we'd like to do? We'd like to, we'd like to have a little bit of a conversation. You know what we'd like to do? We'd like to see a sample of your routine. Love to. Okay. Here we go. Denise Simone.
