Renton Honda Automobiles is having a silent sale. Silent sale? Where the lowest price is clearly posted on every vehicle's window. The price is on the window. Based on dealer original cost, no negotiating, no selling. No negotiating or selling. More Hondas, less money. Renton Honda Automobiles Thanksgiving Day silent sale. It's that simple. Renton Honda Automobiles Thanksgiving silent sale has been extended through Sunday the 25th. This was not the greatest day to go shopping. Yet this night after Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the busiest shopping nights of the year. Retailers bet the farm on Christmas shoppers. Much of the year's profits come in the next four weeks. But all the indications are you are very nervous. Recession and uncertainty in the air. Hopeful it's the best you'll get from the big retailers who will lure you in with the kind of sales before Christmas you're used to seeing after. Here's reporter Bob Branham. Power outages may have struck other parts of the region but today's nasty weather didn't stop the annual lighting of the downtown Seattle Christmas tree or prevent die-hard shoppers from picking their way through post Thanksgiving sales. But as the night wore on, the shoppers wore out and by eight o'clock it seemed deader than Scrooge's doornail. The shopping on this day after Thanksgiving mirrored merchants' projections about the season as a whole. It may be great or it may be greatly disappointing. Duane Covey at Frederick's expected great things this year before all this talk about an economic recession. We had a healthy increase planned and everything you read in the paper and you hear on TV and everything like that, we wonder how much everybody's going to follow that and so we're kind of cautious right now but we're optimistic and we still plan on having a great Christmas season. Reporters agree saying the Northwest should dodge the worst of the recession bullet thanks to local economic giants like Boeing and Microsoft. So we're riding that wave as a springboard into the season and I think that that's going to make a big difference. One thing worrying merchants here is that talk of a recession elsewhere may turn into a self fulfilling property here and people won't feel like buying as much. Still for the time being at least, downtown merchants say they're bullish on Christmas. In Seattle, Bob Randall, Cairo News. And amid all the shoppers today, cautious or otherwise, the protesters, the anti-fur demonstrators, encourage shoppers to buy something else, almost anything else but fur. About 300 animal rights activists marched through downtown this afternoon handing out leaflets calling for a fur free tomorrow. The protest was organized by the Progressive Animal Welfare Society. Pause and pause, paused to thank Nordstrom for closing its fur salon and spent time trying to persuade other department stores to do the same. Coming up still tonight, Harry's here with the weekend weather forecast. Couldn't possibly be wetter than today. Plus the outlook for new car ferry service to Victoria all when we come back. The bodies of a Seattle couple who died in a plane crash in a remote part of Thailand are now on their way home. Edward Lincoln and his wife Kathleen were among the 33 passengers on board a Bangkok Airways flight that crashed on Wednesday. The Havilland Dash 8 was preparing to land when it went down in heavy rains. No one survived. The Lincolns had just completed a mountain trek in Thailand, had planned to relax on a Thai resort island before coming home to Seattle. The bankrupt BC Stenaline says it will give bidders with a plan to resume Seattle to Victoria Ferry service next summer the highest priority. At sale, the company stopped its service a week ago tonight after losing millions of dollars over the past several years. Stennis President says there have been a number of inquiries since the ferry line went up for sale. Stennis says a quick sale would be good for a buyer, giving the buyer more time to prepare for next season, presumably profitably. The group of homeless people braving the rain and the cold for the third night tonight trying to prove a point in the city of Seattle. The group is living in a tense city in the empty lot across from the Kingdom where the New Seattle Arena will be built, which is why I think they're calling it. Twenty seven people spent the night in tents last night trying to prove the city needs to do more for its poorest citizens. Turn to Harry. You were mentioning to me earlier and you may have mentioned it a little bit earlier tonight. There's been a lot of rain since late this afternoon. There has been. Olympia with an inch and a half and a similar amount out of Hokkaido on the coast and in the cascades from Snoqualmie Pass northward, amounts have been as high as nearly two inches and nearly one inch in two hours. That's a lot of rain. But fortunately we're coming out of it. Let's check SeaTax observation. And right now they're showing a temperature of 53 degrees with rain. It's lighter rain than it has been. Humidity is high at 96 percent. And though the wind is still strong, it is not as strong as it was. Steady speeds from the south to 17 with gusts to 28 miles per hour. The barometer is still falling to 9.74. We have a little recovery yet to do. Now let's check the Almanac because this is kind of interesting. The high was 54, the low 51. Nothing too exciting there. But the record low is 10 from 1985. Remember? Last week Thanksgiving fell and we had snow and cold and that was the snowiest month of November ever, 1985. The rain gauge today with the last six hours counted shows about 75 hundredths of an inch of rain and 7.11 inches per month. This is a wet November. The normal for the whole month, the whole month would be 5.6. That's as of November 30th. So we're ahead of average for the entire month. And the year to date is so far ahead now it's almost seven inches over the average. That's a huge number. This is where I left earlier with a satellite photograph showing the low pressure center moving inland into British Columbia. As it moves inland it will cause gusty winds and is causing gusty winds in eastern Washington but it will reduce the wind speeds in western Washington here and they are indeed doing that and will do so more overnight. And you see the rain band off the coast here has thinned out a good deal too. So things should be gradually improving though we're hardly coming into sunny weather here. But nonetheless this is our picture over the last 24 hours showing this long fetch of tropical moisture arcing over the area and aimed just about on target for the Cascades, for the Seattle area, the whole interior of western Washington. But now we're seeing an upper level load digging down on the Gulf of Alaska to cut that rain train flow off and that means we'll start drying out and cooling down over the next couple of days. In the mountains the rain will be turning to snow on Saturday and it may be heavy at times toward the end of the day and colder with the snow level dropping to 3,000 feet Saturday night and possibly even lower Sunday night. And for the waters of western Washington tomorrow starting out with small craft advisories everywhere but these winds will be diminishing during the day. Here's our forecast. Tonight you can expect the rain and wind to be gradually decreasing though not again eliminated. The low is 40 to 45 and south winds 15 to 30 miles an hour. For tomorrow showers and cooler, the high is 45 to 50, the winds west 10 to 20. The five day forecast will be probably pretty cool on Sunday and Monday in a kind of a mini cold snap and then coming back to recovery with periods of rain Monday through Wednesday. So this is indeed an unusually crummy day even for November which is not one of our sunny or better months. Yes, crummy a scientific term. Yeah, I didn't mean to deduce that. I should explain that. That means, well you can you explain it yourself. Everybody knows. Means crummy. Means crummy. Turned away. What happened? What? What happened? Did you ever try? What happened to you? See, well, I thought those games were outdoor games. I can't believe it. Now, you know what happened in Utah tonight. Oh, this has not been, folks. Come on, a good week for the Sonics. First, the X-Man and Dale Ellis went at it. That left the team in a bit of a daze. And tonight, the Utah Jazz applied the final punch. They knocked out the Supes in Salt Lake 97-96. It was showtime at the Salt Palace. Sean Kemp made a couple of amazing dunks. First a two-fisted jam. How about a nice little reverser? Up and over and in. And Utah would have some highlights of their own. Thoroughly Bailey driving baseline. Carl Malone with the rebound and two. This was a pretty play of the night. Watched Payton with a miss. Edwards with the rebound. Stockton saves the pass. Gets it back. Dishes to Bailey. Outlet pass to Stockton. For a little in-your-face dunk. Ooh, that's good. Second half, Utah led all the way. But Sadell Threatt would cut the Jazz lead to one with a little trade. But with time running out, it went to the X-Man. And he unfortunately missed a fallaway jumper. No good. And Utah wins it. Carl the Mailman Malone sure did deliver tonight. 30 points. X leads all Sonic scores with 33. The Supes now four and five. Now to the upset of all upsets. No, not the Gorilla. The New Jersey Nets. After losing 34 straight away from the Meadowlands, Mookie Blaylock's baseline jumper gives the Nets a two point win over the Phoenix Suns. My. Elsewhere around the league, Chicago and Boston. They come away with wins. Miami over Charlotte. Indiana wins. Philly and Detroit both win at home. San Antonio spurs Dallas. And Portland goes 10 and 0 on the season thrashing Golden State. Colleagues basketball in the finals of the Big Apple NIT tournament, Arkansas and Arizona, two of the best. Looked good for the Razorbacks early. Kenny Mayberry with a floating shot in the paint. He was able to hang on. And they beat North Mason in a brilliant game with a field goal at the wire 17-14. Tumwater led 21-zip over Bremer at the half. They end up winning that one. 41 to 12 was the official final. And in a triple A play game, Newport beats Franklin. Both were undefeated going into that one. That one, 41-12, leave the Tumwater Bermadon score at 41-20. And stay tuned because immediately following the newscast and the prep locker room show, we'll have highlights of all three games played. And we'll talk about interviews and talk about the King Bowl coming up next Saturday, of course, in the King Dome. What else in the world of sports tonight? College football this afternoon. A classic rivalry in Nebraska, Oklahoma. Except today, it was a classic blowout. Unranked Sooners ineligible for postseason play. They were led by running back Mike McKinley. He scored three touchdowns as the Cornhuskers turned the ball over seven times. Oklahoma wins it 45-10. Now to soccer, where the PLU women were playing at Erskine College in due west South Carolina. And the 21st running of the Seattle Marathon, that will be coming up tomorrow. Finally tonight, the Seattle sports scene lost a beloved man last night with the death of Torchi Torrance at age 91. Out of Lewis and Clark High School and into the University of Washington in 1917, Torchi was part of the Washington sports scene for all of his adult life. He was part of the fundraising group who helped build the 30,000 seat Husky Stadium in 1920. He worked with Tubby Graves and Heck Edmund at the UW. And he was part of the team that built long acres in 32 and Six Stadium in 38. He simply loved sports. And sports in the Northwest will miss one of the grandest guys of all time, Torchi Torrance. Who was that? He was a terrific man. Yeah, really nice man. He lived 91 good years. Yeah. Let's hope for you and I, right? Thank you. Have a nice weekend. Mm-hmm. Still to come tonight.
