Called the greatest television movie of all time. Now, People Magazine says ABC's new production of Brian Song improves on the Emmy-winning original. TV Guide says Sean Mark is a star-making performance. Makai Pfeiffer has perhaps even more emotional power. Brian Song, tonight, 7, 6 Central on ABC. Finally tonight, Japan is celebrating the birth of a new royal baby. For eight years, the 41-year-old crown prince and his 37-year-old wife have been trying to produce an heir to the throne. Yesterday, as much of the nation came to a standstill, they finally delivered. Here's ABC's Mark Litke. Within minutes of the birth, the special editions hit the streets, and people were literally fighting to grab a piece of history. For a country that's paid little attention to its royals in recent years, they are certainly reveling in this royal birth. Television is devoting hours to the occasion and the arcane imperial rituals here. Though born to an Oxford-educated prince and a Harvard-educated princess, the royal child's first hours are cloaked in centuries-old traditions. On day one, two royal messengers deliver a symbolic samurai sword and kimono. On day seven, a royal attendant will give the child a ceremonial bath in a cypress tub. As court scholars read poetry and wave wooden sticks to ward off evil spirits. Scenes Japan hasn't witnessed for 41 years since Crown Prince Naruhito was born. The child is then named not by the parents, but by the current emperor Akihito, just as tradition dictates. And then there's the question that's on everyone's mind here today. Will the princess, born behind these gates, eventually be designated the heir to the Chrysanthemum throne? Though Japan has had eight empresses over the past 1500 years, a post-World War II law dictates that only men can occupy the throne. Some ultra-conservatives want to keep it that way, but opinion polls indicate the public favors changing the law. And the government, with a record number of women in office, seems ready to give it serious consideration. The birth of a princess, in fact, has left them with little choice. So long as the crown prince and crown princess have no further children, she will be almost surely the first reigning empress in Japan's modern history. For now, the gender of the royal child seems of little concern to ordinary Japanese. With their economy in such dire straits, most are simply happy to have something to celebrate.
