First in the Northwest, this is King 5 television. And now, with all the news for Western Washington, Gene Enerson and Barry Judge, meteorologist Jeff Renner and Tony Ventrella Sports. This is King 5 News at 11. Good evening, our top story tonight, a warning for Eastside neighbors scared by a recent rape. It comes after the assault of a teenager this week in Bellevue. King 5's Robin Kish joins us live from Bellevue with our top story. Robin? Gene, Barry residents here at the Pines Apartments in the crossroad section of Bellevue are double locking their doors tonight after a crime watch meeting with police where they were warned that they should lock their doors and stay safe so those who live here are protected from a rapist who's still on the loose. These young Pines apartment residents now know that preventing crime, like basketball, calls for a strong defense. On Tuesday, a 14-year-old girl was raped in this complex while taking out the trash in her apartment. We just don't want you to be another victim. At this crowded community meeting, young and old were reminded what they can do to keep out of harm's way. That guy could be around, he could do it a second time if you're not safe. So what are you going to do to protect yourself? Keep all doors locked and kick the rocks out of the doors. Shawn, do you remember how you felt? Kind of scared. Adults are also scared. I mean, it's awful. I have an eight-year-old kid that could happen to me. It could happen to my baby. Bellevue police assure residents that apprehending the rape suspect, who is described as a heavyset Hispanic male in his late 20s, is the department's top priority. As of this afternoon, we'd had over 40 good tips from people who had thoughts and feelings about who this might be or something that might help us with the case. Residents are also afraid that the crime may divide the community. And I am just concerned that people are going to turn against the Hispanics in our community. It is one person. It is one person that prayed upon another person. And it is that one person that we want to get. As many as 10 detectives are assigned to this very one case. And the major says that those detectives are working between 12 and 13 hours a day to try to track down that suspect. I'm Robin Kish reporting live in Bellevue. Well, besides the tips, how can residents help the police, Robin? Well, residents are being asked to call 911 if they see anything that's suspicious, anything at all. And besides that, they are also considering forming a block watch, a neighborhood crime prevention organization, so that they can assist police. And on another note, residents here are also trying to form a trust fund so they can help the family of the young victim. All right, Robin Kish, live in Bellevue. King County police are on the scene of a drive-by shooting that downed two teenagers tonight. It happened less than an hour ago in front of a convenience store on 4th Avenue, Southwest, near Southwest Roxbury in the White Center area. King County police say an older model white Chevy drove by and opened fire on a group of people in front of the store. Right now, the teenagers who were shot are being treated at Harborview Medical Center. The suspects are still at large. Tonight, first degree murder charges have been filed against a 19-year-old for the brutal death of his former girlfriend. Police claim that Matthew Byron Wright confessed to a friend he had stabbed and strangled, Audreletinus. I mean, I was with Matt every day, and she'd page him like 20 times a day, just wouldn't leave him alone. But he was starting just to live with that, you know? There wasn't no reason for him to kill her just because she was paging him so much. Friends of 19-year-old Matthew Byron Wright believe he's innocent, that he had nothing to do with the death of his former girlfriend, 16-year-old Audreletinus. The Sherwood High School student's body was found last week severely beaten in this Richmond Beach Park. Wednesday, police picked up Wright for the murder, even though they have few physical clues linking him to the death. They do have circumstantial evidence. Audre's uncle read her statements on a petition for a restraining order. On 11-24-92, he dragged me by my hair, held a gun to my head, and hog-tied me. Audre's uncle says Wright had a charisma that captivated his niece. Experts say about a third of all relationships involving young women can get out of control, even abusive. Several peer counselors say there's a lot of pressure to have a boyfriend or a girlfriend. I know a lot of people just get into a relationship because they don't want to date many people because that's bad or they're a slut or whatever. There is kind of a pressure to have a steady boyfriend or girlfriend. At the time of Audre's murder, Wright was awaiting trial for the third-degree rape of a 14-year-old girl from Richmond Beach. Report records also show Wright was charged with forgery of a check along with juvenile arrest for burglary, attempted robbery, assault, and theft. In other news tonight, downtown Tokyo has been jolted tonight by a strong earthquake causing high buildings to sway for several minutes. As yet, no word on damage or injuries. The earthquake registered a preliminary 5.2 on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was said to be in a largely rural area in southwestern Japan. Disanthropologists say tonight that a quake above 5 is considered very strong. Well the sun will look just a little different when it comes out tomorrow because of a partial solar eclipse. The moon is moving into the path between the sun and the earth. It will block half the sun from sunrise to 7 a.m. in the Seattle area. We'll see only a portion of the eclipse, however. And remember, don't stare directly at the sun. Instead, punch a small hole in a piece of cardboard and then use a second piece to catch the sun's light through that hole. Well it's the sun's we won't see in Seattle next week unless the Sonics can get the Rockets out of the way. And it's Anthony Ventrella's favorite son, Tony, who joins us with a quick look at what happened in Houston tonight. A rough one tonight in Houston. Unfortunately, well we didn't predict it correctly. We did yesterday. Should have stuck with that one. It will be a seventh in deciding game between the Sonics and Rockets Saturday afternoon at the Coliseum. The pattern held true tonight. They played in Houston so the Rockets won, although Gary Payton helped give Seattle a four point halftime lead, 47-43. But in the second half, the Rockets got hot from three point range. Kenny Smith with 30 points tonight. Houston wins it 103 to 90. I think that home court advantage is going to be a big factor. I'd rather be going home than to be coming back out here for game seven. And I'm sure they know that too just by how we beat them there, the three games we played. And we certainly know that just by how they beat us here, the three games we played here. This is even a three games apiece, game seven Saturday, 1230 at the Coliseum here in Seattle. The winner of that one, yes, will go on and play the Sons in the Western Finals. All the marbles. That's right. More about that and then some. More about that in a few minutes. One way or the other, it's over Saturday. Yep. Tony, thanks. In health news tonight, vitamin E is being touted as the newest weapon in the war on heart disease. Two separate studies tonight back up the vitamin's virtues. The studies found a large dose of vitamin E every day can reduce the risk of heart disease by 40 percent. The vitamin helps fight cholesterol built up in the arteries. The New England Journal of Medicine says vitamin E works best on heart problems when more than the recommended daily allowance is taken. I've been interested in good nutrition and have taken vitamin E supplements, but I think I'll boost it up a little bit to keep my heart healthy now that it is. But the jury's still out on what the long-term effects of taking vitamin E in large doses really are. Next to King 5 Special Investigation. Tonight we're talking pension plans. I think the state pension system is kind of the dirty little secret of many legislators' careers. Find out what we've uncovered next, then later. We're going to take you live to Boston for one heck of a cheers party. And then Jay Leno does his show from there, so stay up. Lots more to tell you about tonight. All over Puget Sound, they're asking for it by name. A new taste sensation, the Taco Time Chicken Caesar Salad. Tangy Caesar dressing, crisp romaine and sauteed chicken breast with fresh parmesan. Now that's a Caesar salad. Hail Caesar. Actually, the Caesar salad was invented in Mexico. Mexico. It's in the encyclopedia. Oh, oh, oh. Olé. The new Chicken Caesar Salad. Try it. He was killed by a five-time drunk driver. Now for the first time, the driver talks. Tomorrow on King 5 News at 5, what he has to say for himself. I wish it was me instead of their employee. I wish I were to die. But he's fighting hard against the punishment. What you don't know about the case could make you furious. Tomorrow, King 5 News at 5.
