Washington Post. We'll never be as short as the apples. But how tall do you think that balloon is? 45 feet tall. 90 feet or something. These trees are waving at me. That's a strange thing. Those are people dressed as trees. They're balloon handlers actually. Wave to them, Jim. They're not trees. Oh wow, this looks familiar. The Wizard of Oz is coming down Woodward Avenue right now. Brought to you by Hudson's. This is one of the newer ones. Brought to you by Hudson's Department Store. We're not in Kansas anymore, Carmen. Not at all. Each year Hudson's creates a walk-through holiday display. I don't know if you remember that, Tim, when you'd go downtown and meet Santa Claus. Well, they're doing it now, not downtown any longer. At the Northland. Yeah, and this one is going to be the Wizard of Oz. Hudson's has... And the display runs from now through December 31st. Hudson's has 1,000 other employees out doing what you used to do, Tim, freezing. And watching along the parade route. This is a nice day today. It is. It's not raining, it's not snowing. The sky is relatively blue. Oh, let me tell you, my favorite part in the Wizard of Oz... Flying monkeys. Flying monkeys. I would cringe at the sight of the flying monkeys. All right, there's Dorothy. And Toto. And him, there's and him. I like the soldiers. The soldiers that... The evil those... Or Rio by Nabisco. Those things with the big heads. We've got something for them. This is the grand marshal of the parade. The grand marshal of the parade, Big Bird. And he doesn't take that stuff. Welcome Big Bird. Big Bird has performed at the White House, appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, has visited China twice. And he's taking on Joe Lewis. He's telling Joe Lewis. Big Bird's a boy. We never got close enough to tell last night. And you would have. I was wondering. I always thought I was a girl. And I think that's Bob Seeger's head, Joe Lewis's head. Tim, is that you on the other side? That's me right here at the glasses. Oh, that's Elmo. You know Elmo. What kind of car are they driving, more importantly? Well, it's hard to see that. It's a Sea-Bring. It's a new...priceless. That's right. But you know, Big Bird and his friends always travel with Sesame Street Live. And they're going to come to Detroit in January. And so tickets actually go on sale, I guess, very soon. Tomorrow, in fact, at all ticket national locations. Nice shot, Downward Grid Avenue, here in downtown Detroit. We're going to be right back to continue with America's Thanksgiving parade. Should we tickle Tim so he can just say hello? Ah! All right, he'll be back too. I'll be back. I'll be back. I'll go. He's describing every kind. How did Limit Voyager get to be the best overall value in minivans? It all starts here. Use clever ideas like cab forward design. The show begins Monday, 9 p.m. at the Bedroom Superstores. MUSIC All right, and we're all waving hello from Detroit here in Michigan. America's Thanksgiving Parade with the boardroom, Carmen Harlan, and our special guest, Tim Allen. He's an expert on the parade. This is the West Bloomfield Marching Band. You probably competed with their school when you were in high school here, didn't you? No, they didn't compete. Let's take a listen. Sort of like Northwestern used to be. Yeah, they wouldn't compete with anybody. This is like a new high school. This is a new subdivision pretty much when I was... You know, I know the tuba players in this band. Marissa Torre, Matt Herman, and Jay Gaslake. Wow, you get around more. You really do. That's interesting. By this time next year, I'll know all. This band gets around. They were in London, England, and New Year's Day in 1993 in Paris, France. And so fun to welcome them here today. Last night they performed at the Op Nobbel Gobble, which is the big fundraiser for the parade, Black Tie Indoor Carnival in Cobo Hall. It's a party. It's a party. Carmen said they had food there. She said it was a big party. You know, I'm not going to share anything else with Tim, okay? No, it was a big party. They had food. I went, wow. Well, Jack and the Beanstalk was there. He was there. Yes. And that float. This is the 1995 Art Band theme float, and certainly Art Band has been responsible for keeping this parade alive and well and this tradition alive and well in this area. A few years ago, Art stepped to the plate when the parade was just about to go out of business and put up $200,000 of his money and said, we've got to keep this going. It's a Detroit tradition. You know what's neat about this float though? It has a 35-foot hydraulic beanstalk. You can go up and down. Can you see that? Yes. It's the tallest float ever in this parade. It's made entirely of roses. Oh, I hear that. No, I just... Thank you. It's just made out of furniture. It's made totally out of... I think they forgot to send you the briefing book. There's no briefing book. It's made totally out of daffodils with orchids. Oh, you know the story of... That's the Rose Parade. This is a cow that jumped over the moon. Now, you remember that. What, the cow that jumped over the moon? I tell you, no. That's just a myth. That never really happened. The cat in the fiddle. Chuck, you've got a better view of that one, don't you? Oh, I sure do. I'll tell you what. And I've got the view with Mayor Archer of the City of Detroit, the Honorable Trudy Archer. Happy Thanksgiving to both of you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and all of America. Isn't this great for America's parade? This is fabulous. And I know we were just talking a few minutes ago. It's obvious by the crowds here that there's a feeling that the crowds are bigger, that positive things are happening in this city. It's outstanding. And it's thanks to all of the great citizens and our corporate community that's been heavily investing in our city. We've got excellent job growth, excellent opportunities. If anybody wants to do business in this city, come see us. We'll make it happen for you. This is Archer. This is a great time for you and your family. Oh, it's a wonderful, wonderful time for us. I've always enjoyed coming to the parade as a child, bringing my children in now as the First Lady of the City of Detroit. It's beautiful. Everyone, if you're seeing this all across America, please come. So you don't mind if we bring a million of my closest friends to your house for dinner. Absolutely. Come on by. Mark, Carmen, back to you. All right, Chuck. Tim Allen's got a briefing book now so he can keep up with the rest. We're on Unit 12 right now. Hold on. The Lionel train floor. Okay, okay. Wait a minute. Everybody loved the toy train, especially at the holidays, and especially a Lionel train. Did you have a Lionel train? I have a brand new Lionel train. They made a special edition that the Smithsonian bought. You've got to get the names right. Raymond Luwell, Luwell, who's a famous industrial designer, made a bullet train. Lionel made a series of them last year about one of those. Well, did yours have an engine, a mail car, a toy car, and a caboose? You just slide the stuff. You're like a pro at this. You slide right in here. Dick Kuhn used to head up Lionel trains. He's now the Chairman Emeritus. And his wife, Linda Kuhn, who's been very active in the parade, actually they both are, was in. She's one of the distinguished clowns this year. And actually, Dick is a distinguished clown. He's still with Lionel, right? He is now Chairman Emeritus, meaning he is no longer with them, but he saved Lionel trains. Chairman Emeritus, and they're waving. You can see the mail car there. He also has quite a car collection, I might add. And we're going to have more from America's Thanksgiving Parade from Detroit. In just a minute, stay with us. I'm going to go skipping. MUSIC Here's another clever idea from Plymouth. To make the new Plymouth Grand Voyager even more versatile, they simply went back to the drawing board. And voila, a driver's side sliding door was born. Now it's twice as easy to get into, twice as easy to get out of, twice as easy to load, twice as easy to unload. Grand Voyager instantly slides, folds, protects, unfolds, rolls, and drives better. Smaller electrodes, more power. More electrodes, faster start. Suddenly everybody has a spark plug idea promising instant higher performance. But one plug's idea is higher performance that lasts. Auto Light Double Platinum. Platinum on both sides of the gap for faster starts and more power every time. Platinum to Platinum firing for guaranteed peak performance, long after other ideas have peaked out. Auto Light Platinum and Auto Light Double Platinum. More precious metal for your precious metal. Heard the news today about the Fred Meyer sale. Starts tomorrow morning, it's a four hour sale. Seven till eleven, the store's gonna hop. Lots of gifts and ideas to find them all in one stop. Kicking off the season, you just gotta swing by. The four hour sale, come on and give it a try. Come on and join the fun. Get all your shopping done. Your holiday one stop. You'll find it at the rally one, two, three. Four hour sale. More and more people are interested in the way Washington's forests are managed. At Boise Cascade, we don't export logs. And for us, clear cutting is a last resort. Used only when trees have been killed or damaged by wildfire, insects or disease. And we've launched major environmental studies. Near the Tianaway River, we're learning more about the role of our company's forests in the larger ecosystem. What we're learning and practicing today will benefit the forests for generations to come. Boise Cascade. We care for our forests naturally. Music Welcome back to the 1995 America's Thanksgiving Parade from downtown Detroit, where we're joined this year by Tim Allen. That's right. Who's complaining because there are no tanks in the parade. You know, he was complaining because there wasn't enough music. And we've got music now there right out there. This is the Henry Ford II Marching Band from Sterling Heights. We want to welcome all 200 members this morning. All 200 members. You know, after America's Thanksgiving Parade, this band will travel the Pasadena in your neck of the woods. This is the first time in 25 years. This is the first time in 25 years. What a memory. A band from South East Michigan. A band has memorized every bit of this. Right at the top of my game. 46 pages a week I memorize. Whoa. Doesn't it put you in the mood though? This band has performed in many of the bowl games. The Blue Bonnets, the Cottonball of Fame, the Holiday Bowls. I wonder if they're going to play for Northwestern and the Rose Bowl this year. Is Northwestern going to be in the Rose Bowl? Absolutely. You can count on it. Well, that's if Ohio State loses on Saturday. They will lose on Saturday. We don't know. But if you're from Michigan, Ohio, you know. And I think we should mention that the band was under the direction of Rick Snyderhouse. And certainly welcome to America's Thanksgiving Parade this year. This is a fun one. This is a fun one. This is absolutely my favorite. The Fred Mills Retraced Will Tees. This is the Fred Mills Retraced Will Tees. Oh, you've got to watch this. Can you see it? Yeah. It's alright. You watch it. Well done. You've never seen anything like this. One of these days when I'm retired, I'm going to audition for this group. 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. Discipline. We'll name it again. There you go. So what did you think? You can't wait to see Morton do it? I want to see Morton do it. Well, they're a lean, mean marching machine. One out of two is not bad for me. I'm mean. Remember that song, there was a farmer had a dog. What's his name? Oh, that's it. And that's the end of this. Oh, it's the end. This was sponsored by one of the outstanding philanthropic foundations in our community, the Skillman Foundation. And this was the 1995 winner of the Parade's float design contest. It was designed by a 12-year-old from Jefferson Middle School, Joe Vasace. St. Clair Shores admitted this winning design and look, it's a float. Carmen has to like this one. She has about nine dogs in her house. She likes it. Of course I do. This year the rules of the contest were expanded though to allow children's songs, in which one of the most famous was Bingo. Was his name oh. Bingo was his name oh. And this is another story that you remember. This would be the three. No, I actually. Redhall Pig. I read a book for Storytime on PBS for the little kids who read books. I read the book about the wolf. It was a real story. Well, he's here too. And boy, if he. This is also sponsored by the Skillman Foundation. Right. And it was designed by an 11-year-old from Newborn, Ali Alali of Lowry Elementary School. And isn't it wonderful the imagination that truth come to life. Now if there was too much helium in that thing, would it actually take those children away with it? We don't really want to think about that, do we? No. That would be a bad thing to think about, although right now I'm picturing how exciting that might be. Might be. To carry seven children off to Canada. That wolf is 30 feet tall, filled with helium. But you know a lot of wolves are full on hot air. But you know what we've got coming up next is one of the greatest love stories, and that's Beauty and the Beast. Often the music is wonderful from the Broadway play. It's often how they refer to Carmen in the on the airs. Beauty and the Beast. Brought to you by Allied Signal Automotive. Presents Beauty and the Beast. Classic tale of love conquering all and a stunning reminder that beauty is more than skin. Allied Signal Automotive is the sponsor of this float. And our own Chuck Gatkin is down on this float. Chuck, where are you? Well Carmen, Morton, Tim, I'm down on the Frosty the Snowman float. Brought to you by the United States Postal Service. There are letter carriers surrounding this float. They're getting letters for Santa from the kids on the sidelines. And they will whisk those away just as soon as this parade is over. You might also get a glimpse of the new Christmas stamp as you look around the float. But they're all excited. And this is a great day for not only Frosty but for the letter carriers as they'll pick up the important mail and get it to the right place on time. Morton, Carmen, Tim. Alright Chuck. Now if you're not in the Christmas mood you're going to be because we're going to be right back with more of America's Thanksgiving parade from downtown Detroit. Stay with us. Music. Over the past three years Dodge has offered a choice of more new name plates than anybody else. I'd only ask Santa for one thing. In fact I started sending letters to the North Pole around July. Christmas morning I got so excited I tripped over the coffee table. As I tore through the package with my name on it I realized two things. Santa actually could read my handwriting and there was no better gift than a Lionel train. 30 years later my kids are telling me the same thing. Lionel, experience the magic. Happy Thanksgiving from Lionel, a proud sponsor of America's Thanksgiving parade. America's greatest offer. Do not pay till 1997. Only at the Bedroom Superstores. Now she can keep your heart right next to hers. Zales, the diamond heart pendant store. And it says welcome home Tim Allen. But Mort, what does that make us? We're already home here in downtown Detroit. I'm Carmen Harlan with Mort Crim and welcome Tim. Thanks. I have to be quiet now. No you don't. Yes. Well that'll be the day. One of the big brass just came in and said Tim. Big shot. Actually you're listening to the music of the Athens Redhawks. High school band. They're from Troy, Michigan. Oh they're good. And I'd like to point out that they won the band competition last night. There were six bands competing at the Michigan State Fairgrounds. These are the folks that won. Listen to those drums. It's their 12th year to appear in this parade. 120 members strong. No you're getting your fill of music. You said you wanted to hear bands. More bands. More bands. More bands. We're still waiting for the fans. You have to look at the monitor. Notice that building in the background there. See that? That building back there is made out of concrete. Here's Alice in Wonderland. I thought that would be in the foreground. This is the 1994 Art Van theme float, Alice in Wonderland, backed by popular demand. 60 feet long and this is one of the longest units ever in America's Thanksgiving parade. And that lettering that people did the parade, actually, I can't see, that's just on the television screen. Those letters don't like fly around. It's live from Detroit. And you see the man hatter, he spins around actually. March Hare's Crazy Clock spins. And we look closer. Alice is Iceland. Where are they making these boats? Here in Detroit? Right here, yeah. We've been through the large building where they make them, repair them. Speaking of large buildings. No small toy soldier, is it? Bada bing. And you want a tank. Well, this is close. This is so, it's one soldier. And you know the building behind the man is made of a, that's, that's Glengarry Brick. Interestingly, that building has been there every year in the parade. A few of the Guardian buildings. It's a regular feature. It's just a facade. This balloon is sponsored by Comerica. One of the biggest things. 65 foot tall balloon. Stand 65 feet tall, do you think that makes sense? He's trying to, if you do know what he's talking about. It sounds like he's not. Okay. There you go. Linda Coon. And I gotta tell you. One more distinguished clown. For the first time in the Distinguished Clown Corps, Carmen's husband, Joseph Cobb, is out there as a distinguished clown. It'll be hard to recognize. There's Dale Austin. Don Austin. A lot of distinguished clowns. Oh, I recognize that face there. There's Alan. They look just about like he does in the other places. The general manager of WVIV. He doesn't wear that hat though. No, no, not the hat. The hat looks pretty much the same. The nose and the suit. Nose and the suit. Let me tell you, these guys are having a lot of fun. But, and they're men and women, folks, but without their contribution. They pay a thousand dollars a piece, and that money goes to the parade company to help keep this parade going. So they actually pay for the privilege of being clowns. With us, it's the other way around. They make you a lot more. They keep the excitement going. Oh, we know this one. Humpty Dumpty. Sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. Oh, you remember those things. All these men. Couldn't put Humpty back together. That's right, and if you look a little closer, I think he's tilting just a little bit. He's the 1994 winner of the Parade Student Floats sign contest. Another student. Humpty's looking just a little bit tipsy. I think he drank his breakfast this morning. Could have been. Pulled by a fabulous Jeep Cherokee. You like the cars, too, don't you? Just the cars. And we will have more from America's Thanksgiving Parade here in downtown Detroit when you join us just a moment. Over the past three years, Dodge has offered a choice of more new nameplates than anybody else. Here are three more new choices, but they aren't cars. They are three choices that make it easier for you to drive a new Dodge. Choose from generous cash incentives. Or exceptional interest rates. Or extremely low lease rates. But Tim, it's been great having you with us to share this part of the parade. Oh, wow. Well, thank you. Stay with George. If it wasn't anything we said, was it? No, as soon as I leave you guys will talk about me, I'm sure. Oh, yeah, we might not even wait until you're out of the booth. Actually, we were going to talk about the Caff High School Band. Great to have you here. Happy Thanksgiving to you. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone else. All right. Thanks so much. It was fun. Thanks for being here to improve our little home on this Thanksgiving Day. I do what I can. And the Caff Tech High School Band is marching down Woodward Avenue here in Detroit. Let's take a look. And that's the Caff Tech High School Band. Always good, always enjoyable. And we've got, this man looks familiar, Aladdin. General Motors Foundation presents Aladdin and Chuck Edekes. Nearby on that float, Chuck. I get to ride all the cool rides, Morton Carmen. This one is brought to us by General Motors. This is the Aladdin float. This elephant is pneumatic. It's actually a robot and it has a bunch of different working parts. The balloon you see back there, Aladdin himself, is over 14 feet tall on top of this float. And they'll actually have to duck his head or even deflate him to get him underneath the people mover as we move down Woodward Avenue. A lot of floats this year have big moving parts, and this is just one of them, a great one brought to you by General Motors. Morton Carmen. All right. Okay, Chuck. Sounds like you're having a great time down there. And fortunately, it turned out not to be too terrible for your weather wife. You ever thought about what you would do if you had a genie, like, and he put three wishes, Mort? The only one I have opens my garage door. Okay. This is Aladdin, of course, based on the figure. And now we've got the black, or I should say the Michigan black horsemen. They were founded in 1986 as a non-profit organization. 30 members in all. Both in 1990 and... You know, over the past five years, the Michigan Black Horsemen Association has awarded scholarships to graduates at the Fort Public High School. And they've always had a strong commitment to academic excellence in this area. They won the State Fair equine division in 1993 and 1991. Now, some people just know how to fly. This is Dumbo, sponsored by Northwest Airlines. Actually, Dumbo is probably a real famous cartoon character. He's able to fly for the same reason I am. He has big ears. Oh, I think he's also a favorite of boys and girls of all ages. Getting a little extra encouragement, though, from his pint-sized friend, Timothy Mouse. He's tucked away in Dumbo's head. I don't know if you can see him there, but we're getting a closer look. Doesn't make anybody fly if they had a mouse tucked in their ear with them. And Treasure Island is making its way down Woodward Avenue, brought to you by AAA Michigan, a loyal supporter of the parade. This is probably one of the most beautiful floats ever to appear in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Treasure Island is surrounded by an eight-foot-tall paper mache set of pirates and sailors. You know, accompanying the float are four safety patrollers chosen from all of the dedicated young people who participated in Chick-fil-A's school safety patrol. Were you a safety patrol boy? You know, I was. And as a matter of fact, one of our Christmas tree ornaments is the badge I made lieutenant when I was in the sixth grade. I have rank I ever achieved. Oh, don't brag. Don't brag. But anyway, we do have four safety patrollers who are on this float. Thank you, AAA of Michigan. And I hear more music more. Well, what would a parade be without the bands that we've got lots of today? And we'll be back to continue with America's Thanksgiving Day Parade right after this. Even though the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited is more sophisticated, more refined, and more luxurious than ever, you can be sure that underneath it all, it's still a Jeep. Smaller electrodes, more power. More electrodes, faster start. Suddenly, everybody has a spark plug idea promising instant higher performance. America's greatest offer. Do not pay till 1997. Only at the Bedroom Superstores. This holiday weekend, four days only. Choose from over 50 beautiful bedroom styles, including a huge selection of kids' beds, mattresses, futons, and waterbeds. And do not pay till 1997. Do not pay this Christmas or even next Christmas. Pay no interest and make no payments till 1997. And remember, the mattress is always free. Plus merchandise available for holiday delivery. Hurry offer ends Monday, 9 p.m. at the Bedroom Superstores. Heard the news today about the Fred Meyer sale. Starts tomorrow morning, it's a four-hour sale. Seven till eleven, the storm's gonna hop. Lots of gifts, they're here to find them all in one stop. Taking off the season, you just gotta swing by. Four-hour sale, come on and give it a try. Come on and join the fun. Get all your shopping done. Your holiday one stop. You'll find it at the Freddy's one, two, three, four-hour sale. And that little thing I was gonna tell you is coming to you from Detroit, Michigan for America's Thanksgiving Parade. I'm Mort Prim with Carmen Harlin and without Tim Allen who joined us for about the first 40 minutes of this hour and has now gone on to another commitment. And happy Thanksgiving everyone. You're watching or listening to Springfield's local high school band. The Golden Eagle Marching Band I should say. They're from Ohio, the new Middletown, Ohio. One of a few out of the group. Oh and they call themselves the Tigers. Let's take a listen. And they're visiting us all the way from new Middletown, Ohio. Tiger Pride Marching Band. I believe that's near the city of Springfield. Alright, take your word for it. Now we've got the U.S. Air Force Grill Team, a specialty unit. This honor guard began in 1948 when the Air Force decided to needed an elite ceremonial unit like the other armed forces had. They're coming in right behind the band. Put no music. But get in still. Very, very difficult to stand up. Sort of like we all would be after dinner today, right? At first I was gonna say what is that? But that's a mouse. Three blind mice, of course. That's why you can't stand. Once again a float sponsored by the Skillman Foundation. The foundation's support has been a vital part of helping present this national caliber event. And now that the first one has passed you can see the next two. Three blind mice. The former winning design in the Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Balloon Suits and Design Contest. We've got some very talented students in this area. This is not the first float or balloon design that we've seen come to life from one of the students in this area. Look at this one. You can even do the sports. Oh, that looked like me on a good day with the sunglasses. Well, I've never seen you on a bad day, Carmen. Alright, these are the Winans. They were born and raised in Detroit. They began singing in their local church. They are now one of the top gospel groups in the entire world. Certainly a hometown favorite and certainly a favorite, I hope, of course, of the country as well. The Winans have won five Grammy Awards for best gospel group. They've got a brand new release out Heart to Soul. I think you have a copy of that. Oh, certainly do. And we're going to have a lot more from Detroit for the America's Thanksgiving Parade when we come right back. So stay with us. Testing the new AutoStick system on the Eagle Vision is test pilot Captain Orlowski. You comfortable, sir? I love the smell of a new car in the morning. I'll take that as a yes. Engaging AutoStick. No clutch, easy to shift. No bulky oxygen masks. Amazing control. Even without the wings. You can't hook it out of the F-16 much, do you, flyboy? And that's okay. Test it yourself. Make the call. 1-800-2-TEST-Eagle. I'll never forget that Christmas. I'd only asked Santa for one thing. In fact, I started sending letters to the North Pole around July. Christmas morning, I got so excited I tripped over the coffee table. As I tore through the package with my name on it, I realized two things. Santa actually could read my handwriting, and there was no better gift than a Lionel train. Thirty years later, my kids are telling me the same thing. Lionel, experience the magic. Ridders House of Christmas, North 10120 Division Street. And hello again from Detroit, Michigan, home of America's Thanksgiving Parade. I'm Carmen Harlan with more trim. This is certainly one of the premier events in the city of Detroit, and one that we look forward to, and about a million people who come and line Woodward Avenue every year for America's Thanksgiving Parade. And if you're not in the holiday spirit, this is certainly one way to get into it, because we've heard good music, we've got clowns, we've got floats, we've got just about everything that would make any parade a success. And there's more to come. Right now you're looking at the Golden Eagle Marching Band from Ferndale High School, under the direction of Roger Smith and David Coleman. You know, this band finished ninth in the overall state competition at the Pontiac Silver Dome. That means they're really good. Karen Miller and Matt Mackinder are the drum majors. And our own Chuck Gatica, our friend and colleague, is keeping us abreast of what's going on along the parade route. Chuck, are you there? Carmen, I'm way down here with the Paul Bunyan float, and this is brought to you by WDIV, the Telecast Friginator. And I'm down on the street level with all the Paul and Paula Bunyans of the world. This is a 50-foot tall balloon. The Babe the Blue Ox is about 45 feet long and has 4,000 square feet of blue fur, formerly from Orkrim's basement, adorning the back and sides of this wonderful idea. This was a past parade winner and is now again WDIV's float that's entered in this year's parade. And I'm out here with Paul and Paula Bunyan, dressed appropriately so you know, having fun and staying warm. Wave hello to everybody in America. Hello! Hello everybody in America. Happy Thanksgiving. Mort Carmen? Well, I was going to say, where did you get the Paul Bunyan outfit, but I was afraid to ask. Oh, Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, sponsored by WDIV, Telecast Friginator of this parade, and helping to send this parade signals to millions of homes nationwide. Chuck has a lot of fun down there jumping on and off of floats and checking out the various things from street level. You know, this used to be the art van being flown and features a dual float and balloon unit of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. Babe is 45 feet long and 16 feet high and covered with 4,000 square feet of blue fur. Handsome, Babe. WDIV TV here in Detroit is the originator of this parade for national telecasts. And they're helping send this parade signal right now to 85 million homes nationally. And we're glad that you're one of them this morning. Just to give you an idea, we talked about how long Babe was. I guess how tall Paul Bunyan is. 15 feet tall. And these buildings downtown are pretty tall and you can see them. I don't know, Carmen. I don't know how that sounds like a myth. Babe and Paul Bunyan are going right by our booth here right at this very moment. And we want to welcome you again to America's Thanksgiving Parade here from Detroit, Michigan. I'm Carmen Harlow with Mort Crim. And we'd like to say goodbye now to our audience. No, we're not going to say goodbye to our audience. Oh, no, we've got much too much to go on. Well, let's just take a break then. And no, we're not going to take a break. Let's just continue with the parade. Are we having fun yet? Yes, we've got to. In fact, if I listen closely, I can hear the sirens. It might be a real siren or it could be that of, you know, we've got a distinguished clown form. We've also got some other clowns in the parade who like nothing better than to pull a practical joke. And that siren might, might indicate that they're heading in the wrong direction. One of the most exciting toys are us. Sponsors this one, the Jeffrey Mobile. It's a modified hot rod, a London double decker bus. I thought I heard a siren and that's why. We've got Jeffrey and Daisy Andrew. I think there's some more kids on that. Hello from Detroit. And as you can see from looking at the picture on your screen, the weather is just about perfect for today's parade. It's a little chilly out there. You'll see people bundled up, but everybody's having a good time and we don't have any rain or snow. So the skies are mostly the skies are mostly free of clouds, some clouds up there. And we want to welcome the clown brought to you by Kmart. And what's a parade without a clown? Well, this guy's a little bit bigger than most, but he's one of the parade favorites every year. And this clown was actually built originally to honor the parade's distinguished clown for the individuals who make a one thousand dollar donation to the Thanksgiving parade in order to dress up as clowns and march. So they include some of the city's top business leaders and professional people. I suppose we should mention that Kmart headquarters are located here in Metropolitan Detroit and Detroit, Michigan. Speaking of clowns, this is the Detroit Fire Department's clown team. Units consists of 15 clowns, a pickup truck, and a 25 foot ladder truck. Guys who normally are engaged in very serious business. We're having fun today. And they deserve it. I think they've got a little problem here, but I'm sure they're going to work this out. What would a clown corp be without a problem? Right. Or creating a problem. You know, this clown team is supported by the Detroit Firemen's Fund. They were founded in 1866 and it's a fund for disabled firemen and for widows and orphans of Detroit Firemen killed in the line of duty. So all of this fund has a very positive purpose. But Liebler is the vice president of marketing and communications for the Chrysler Corporation. And he's joining us now here in our booth. But welcome. Hey, you got the best seat in the house. Happy Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving to you too. What a great way to start it. And one of the warmest seats in the one of the warmest seats, but also the best. How important is it that Chrysler take apart and support this wonderful parade every year? I think the thing we want to do is so much good is happening in Detroit right now. And all we're trying to do is we help to get the message out to 85, 90 million homes across America. And see how terrific this city really is and what Mayor Archer's doing. And you know, we've had some bad times in the past. We're having good times. We want to show the world. Well, Detroit is one of the nation's best kept secrets. Those of us who live here, who have lived here for a long time know what a terrific place it is. And this parade certainly helps to put the best face on a wonderful community with some great people. But you may want to talk about Santa's workshop. I mean, this is Chrysler funds float sponsored by the Chrysler Fund. And we know that that's the busiest workshop right about now. This is actually the first chance I've had to see the thing. But no Santa on it. Mrs. Claus is on it. And some of the others are on it. And they're clearing the path for Santa to come down here. That's quite a show with all the confetti and the streamers. It's pretty good, doesn't it? You know, we all know that in a couple of weeks Santa Claus is going to make that annual trip around the world. Spreading joy and gifts to little boys and girls everywhere. But it's got to start somewhere. And we thank you, Bud Lieber, for being with us. And we certainly thank Chrysler for serving as national television sponsor of the parade. I think it's said America's Thanksgiving Parade across the country, as well as in the parts of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. I hope they're having as much fun there as we are here. Did you bring your family down? They're all out on the curb. Well, you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thanks, you too. Enjoy the turkey. And we'd like to say goodbye to our national audience from around the country. We're glad you were able to share this Thanksgiving tradition with us. On behalf of Carmen Harlan, Chuck Gatica, Tim Allen and everyone here in Detroit, I'm Mort Frim, hoping you have a warm and a wonderful holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Happy Thanksgiving.
