Hi, I'm Nina Griscombe for HBO Entertainment News.
Although his brief career in the spotlight spanned only three short years, Buddy Holly
and the Crickets had a string of unforgettable hits and paved the way for a brand new form
of music called Rock and Roll.
Holly was killed in a plane crash in 1959, ending what most likely would have been a
long and brilliant career.
No one will ever know what great songs were still due to come from the artist who brought
us such classics as Peggy Sue and That'll Be the Day.
But one thing that lives on and continues to be felt today is his tremendous musical
influence on some of the top performers of our time.
In New York, Paul McCartney along with wife Linda played hosts for what has become an
annual musical birthday tribute to Buddy Holly.
Commemorating what would have been his 55th birthday this month, the crowd at Manhattan's
Lone Star Roadhouse was treated to a Rock and Roll evening complete with a Buddy Holly
look-alike who ventured over from rehearsals of a new Broadway play on Holly's life.
Holly's widow Maria joined in the celebration, as did members of his original band The Crickets,
who put in a rare musical appearance.
The grand finale of the evening featured Paul McCartney and rocker Dave Edmonds singing
one of Holly's biggest hits.
Edmonds admits he feels Holly's influence in his own work.
He's a guitar player basically, he's a fabulous guitar player and he had a lot of style, you
know, he was one of the dozen people who made Rock and Roll in my mind.
Thirty-one years after his untimely death, the music of Buddy Holly continues to hold
its own and as long as there is a form of music called Rock and Roll, Holly's influence
will continue to be heard.
