Everybody's talking. Matt Lauer is talking about that day and how he got us through it. I've never seen people in our studio start to cry. Brad Pitt is talking about that man and how they've teamed up. Julia is talking to Dave and now what's so funny? And Snoop Dogg doesn't talk, he raps. Well, he talks to and lectures and preaches and smokes. That plus Brittany, Michael, and a host of people including the next big sensation who talks a language we all understand. It's Access Hollywood, the talk fest. The day before, the turkey fest. All right here, right down. Matt Lauer on one of the most emotional days in today's show history. Hi everybody and welcome to Access Hollywood. I'm Nancy Odell. Hi Nancy, hi folks, I'm Pat O'Brien. When news of the September 11th attacks broke, Matt Lauer was live on the air. It was a moment unlike anything in his career. Tony Potts sat down with Matt as he relived the day and joins us now, Tony does, outside the Today Show studio. Tony? Hi Pat, at that moment millions of people were watching Katie and Matt. We saw what they saw but now for the first time Matt opens up to me with his thoughts, his perspective as the events unfolded. Have you had time to step aside and comprehend what has happened? We're all going to react to this and I don't think I have yet. I haven't stopped and broken down. I've had moments where I've been nervous and it's bothered me but I haven't really had a chance to stop and say, my god, what did we just really have to cover? I have got to interrupt you right now. I had been doing an interview on Howard Hughes, on a book on Howard Hughes, and they said in my ear, they don't talk in my ear very often so when they do it means something's happened. Do we have it? And my executive producer said wrap this interview up right now, we have a breaking story. We're back with dramatic pictures of it. The most vivid memory I have is when the second plane went behind the building and we were on the phone talking to an eyewitness and she went, oh my god, oh another one just hit, something else just hit. Oh my god. And I saw the explosion and I grabbed my pen and I wrote, looked at Katie and I wrote, pure terrorism. David, I'm sorry to interrupt you but we're looking at live pictures of the pentagon where there is billowing smoke. And we immediately found out it's a plane and I looked in the studio and one of the women who's our floor managers started to cry and a camera guy over here had tears in his eyes and we were all thinking, what's next? How many more of these are there going to be? You can't break down, you can't be an alarmist, you've got to do your job at that point. However, I've never seen people in our studio start to cry. Matt's personal reflections came as we took part in his annual J. Robert Lauer golf tournament named in memory of Matt's father and benefiting the hospice of Palm Beach County which cared for his dad. Matt went on to tell me it was later when the terror really hit home for his family. An NBC News employee who worked for me in fact has a cutaneous anthrax infection. Did that scare you at all coming home because you have a little son? It was a bad day to be honest with you. Matt, his wife Annette and then four month old son Jack were in the car for a weekend getaway when he received a phone call from his assistant giving him the NBC anthrax news. There was a noticeable weight came over the car and I pulled over the side of the road and I told Annette to drive on. I got a cab and went back to be tested and yeah you know as I left the car and I watched Annette drive away with the baby in the back seat and I thought to myself is it all my clothing? Did I bring a paper home? You know I didn't know anything about anthrax at that time. Fortunately all were okay and now more than ever Matt finds himself savoring the little things in life. How has that been for you being deaf? It's been so great. I mean I am every geeky thing that I promised myself I wouldn't do. Despite the fact you're going to promise yourself you're not going to go you will do it and I do it. Now tomorrow the private side of Matt you rarely get to see and how his father inspired him to help so many and Matt also discusses the future of the Today Show at this critical juncture. Nancy back to you. Tony thank you very much. Well Brad Pitt has always been called the next Robert Radford and today for the first time ever on screen they joined forces as secret agents in spy game. I'm done with your reasons Nathan. I'm done with you. I'm not ending up like you. Good luck. I've read one place where you said that you feel more like his equal in this movie. I wouldn't say equal. I got a ways to go. Where are you from? When's your birthday? Come on you know everything about me. I don't know a thing about you. He's an Oscar winner. He's an Oscar nominee but both wear a title of Hollywood heartthrob. Like it or not it's a comparison of which they are painstakingly aware. I'm aware of the comparisons that people make. Sure there is a physical resemblance and even some similar career choices but the reasons to work together in the action thriller spy game had less to do with comparison and more to do with camaraderie. Robert also said that this is the first film that you guys had talked about doing together. I can only think that people have been calling you all along talking about doing a film together. No not that no. Because there's so many comparisons between you two. Well listen there's so many films there's well the f well if you got one guy why do you need the other. Joking aside the 37 year old star and 65 year old veteran pay no mind to the reports but Redford did discuss with Brad just how different their rises to stardom had been with Brad's era much more difficult. I've always called it the minefield. Going through the minefield. Meaning you can you can lose focus of of the actual craft and and that's when it goes awry for me. Plus there's so many more media outlets today. Right there's a lot of. There were a few years ago. Right a lot of creatures to be fed. But they're not all as friendly as Access Hollywood right. No that's so true. Isn't it. My God it's true. Put those words in his mouth young lady now more Brad news he's making an appearance with Jay tonight and look for Brad to do a little comedy. Brad's spy game is not the only new film opening today in fact there are three. Here's what our critic thinks. It's going to be a killer weekend for Harry Potter. The other movies I'm not so sure. Spy game is a spy thriller it's about the CIA. The mentor is Robert Redford the protege is Brad Pitt. Redford's directed pit before and they've actually got pretty good swing chemistry. Are you kidding me. No sir. It's too long and the story is kind of unbelievable. Black Knight is about this guy who's magically transported back in time to the middle ages. I think Martin Lawrence does have talent it's just that not much of it's on show here. It's got like two or three smiles on the whole thing. Outcomes is like a snowboarding version of those skiing movies from the 70s. Right at the beginning and right at the end there's some really quite cool snowboarding sequences. In between there's just these really lame jokes. This is the kind of movie that's so bad they should pay you to watch it. Without a doubt this is one of the worst 10 years of the year. More reviews now on the new films. Our critic aside spy game is getting mostly see it's in our poll. Associated Press calls it a high obtained thriller. Black Knight is getting mixed reviews USA Today calls it Blah Knight. And Out Cold is leading most critics out in the cold. Los Angeles Times calls it a frost-bitten fiasco. More fallout from the Michael Jackson concert. Just a week after reports broke claiming that Whitney Houston's frail body was electronically altered to make her appear heavier and healthier. Now People Magazine is reporting that Michael Jackson's appearance was changed too to make him appear darker. You decide. Here's the original feed of the concert unchanged. And here's the reportedly digitally darkened footage as it appeared last Tuesday on CBS. According to People Jackson had himself made darker with a visual effects device that changes the picture one frame at a time. In this case more than 100,000 frames. Representatives who are Michael Jackson were unavailable for comment and Whitney Houston's people couldn't be reached. The upcoming issue of People with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kiffin on the cover appears on Newsstands Friday. Coming up at home on the court and a stunning moment as Snoop met the press. And as close to Shakira as you can get is she the next Madonna? Coming up. JLo does so-so as we fire up the ratings scoreboard. Jennifer Lopez's first ever concert did okay for NBC with about 12 million people tuning in. That's nowhere near the 26 million people that watched Michael Jackson's 30th anniversary special. And it's a surprise for the fans that he's been on the anniversary special on CBS last week. But Lopez did give NBC a respectable second finish in the eight o'clock hour behind CBS's Jag. Over on Fox 24 continues to falter with its lowest ratings yet. Dateline's annual special on the McCoy septuplets took second place for the 10 o'clock hour with about 13 million. In just five days Harry Potter has already raked in nearly 105 million dollars. It's just the latest blockbuster, a trend which began over 25 years ago. But for all the money these movies make, a new television special claims, there is a downside. Jaws was significant as a watershed film. When the movie Jaws first opened it created a sensation. They would create this enormous swell of momentum that would create gargantuan box office from the beginning. How could there have been only one? In a straight to the point no-nonsense style front line dives headfirst into the genesis of the blockbuster. Two years after Jaws, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader created white hot box office and something new. Ancillary prophets, toys and dolls and other doodads. The sequel was born. Rocky lost. You'll go back to being a stupid nut. And then he won. And then there were three more Rockies. But there was a dark side to the enormous bottom line profits. As an independent producer, Michael Douglas brought one flew over the cuckoo's nest to the big screen. There's no time now for a movie to breathe because by the next weekend there's three, four, five other pictures coming in. Each maybe who spent an average of maybe 25 million dollars for their marketing alone. Frontline the monster that ate Hollywood airs tomorrow night at nine on PBS. The gangster rapper has a cult following and with a successful clothing line and three new films Snoop now has a site set on the White House? At home in the dog pound. The day in the life of Snoop Dogg. You're gonna need a wash screen for this. From his suburban home to his Beverly Hill suite to his movie premiere in Hollywood. Spending a day with rap artist Snoop Dogg begins on this quiet cul-de-sac near Los Angeles. His house is undergoing a major renovation but that's not the only reason it stands out. First there is his collection of colorful cars. And sometimes there is an equally colorful collection of visitors. This is one dog who runs with a huge pack of friends. Believe it. Y'all wanna see a dog access Hollywood? Call me Brian. He's my teacher. Actor and comedian Alex Thomas served as our tour guide during our stay with Snoop. What's up man? And what we found was an artist who may act like a kid at heart but his mind is set on being king. King of the hill in music of course. But last week's premiere of The Wash means that alongside phones and the Denzel Washington thriller Training Day Snoop now has three movies currently in theaters. Snoop also teamed up with Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flint to produce an adult video in which Snoop performs but only on the soundtrack. And it's selling like crazy. Like gum and cheese. Still to this day. And his Snoop Dogg clothing line is selling so well that projected sales figures have increased from 30 million to 50 million dollars. What got you into this? I mean what made you want to get into fashion and put it down like that? So when I decided to put this plan together I got with Quincy Jones' daughter Kadada Jones and Tommy Hill's bigger little brother Andy Hill figure. You know they said it'd be a great idea so we became a team and we launched it. Now Snoop wants to be the mogul who has the Midas touch with cars. Look at the interior. Beautiful. Me and Cadillac we're in discussions about them creating a car called the Snoopy Bill. Business plans aside Snoop points to the mural on his 69 Riviera as proof that his family still comes first. Just letting the world know how I felt about my wife and my daughter. I ain't afraid of it. They my biggest fans you know I gotta do the most for them as far as being a great example. Right. And I love raising my kids. We followed Snoop with his posse of security and friends in Toke across town to Beverly Hills. We met with the press to promote his new movie The Wash. He invited us to his hotel suite for a brief visit. He even let us sit in on all his interviews but all the while we couldn't help notice that wherever Snoop went the unmistakable air that followed him was not just the sweet smell of success it was the distinct odor of something else. Why not go ahead and legalize marijuana? Snoop's liberal views on marijuana were clearly on display for reporters who couldn't help but comment. Do you feel that you're kind of picked on though because you are open about your your your smoking? Snoop has always been the bad boy poster child for gangster rap. He was arrested but eventually cleared of being a murder accomplice in the mid-90s. And just last month even though Ohio police stopped his tour bus and charged him with possession of marijuana the rebellious rapper remains defiant. Go to the White House when I go meet the president he can better believe when I slide to the bathroom I'm going to his side. Regarding Snoop's condoning the use of drugs the office of the national drug control policy tells us bad dog that's part of the quote here drug abuse steals 52,000 lives a year in the United States. America's youth deserves positive role models and healthy futures that won't go up in smoke. Nancy? Well from Snoop to Shakira the Latina sensation's first ever English language album debuted today on the charts at number three. That is one notch below Britney and four spots ahead of Madonna and it's fitting she keeps such good company. Some have already pegged her the next Madonna. Tonight Access discovers Shakira. It was a complete mop scene as thousands of fans rushed to see Latina superstar Shakira at Tower Records in LA. Shakira is breathtaking she's just awesome. Great to make people happy and great to feel that kind of connection that I have with my audience. A native of Columbia Shakira is a megastar in Latin America where her four Spanish albums have sold eight million copies and where she regularly sells out huge arenas. After winning two Latin Grammys last year the hip swiveling bombshell is now attempting to conquer the states with her first ever English CD Laundry Service. At the beginning I was like oh my god I'm in trouble now I have to make a record in English and how am I gonna do it. You see Shakira writes her own songs up until now in Spanish she had to learn to write in English for this album. The first time in my life I wrote with the rhyming dictionary on my right and a you know a laryse on my epasaurus on the left. To her relief the first single Wherever Whenever is a hit here in the states and as it has through several hairstyle changes in Latin America her Madonna like image is catching on here so much so Pepsi put her in an American commercial months before her English album even came out. I always feel like oh my god this is never gonna happen again just let's celebrate this miracle. And coming up next Julie Roberts, David Letterman and fireworks on the set coming up. Good night everybody. On the next Access Hollywood, friends, enemies, country, man. First up, Brad Pitt hates Jennifer Aniston. Got your attention? Well then, so should the next friends. Just hanging out with those guys on that show was epic for me. Then, they are probably friends in real life. I mean it's only television. But Matt Lauer and Katie are in a tough ratings race. With the folks over there on GMA, we've got Matt talking about the quest for the morning crown. Then, a little bit of country and a little bit of pop princess. It's a big battle between Garth and Brittany. We know who would win a dance contest, but that's not what's at stake here. So, there you have it. She's not impressed with Pitt and his wit.
