I mean the whole, this relentless prosecutor going to unnecessary lengths to prove something that may not be true begins to go away and the whole thing begins to be seen as Bill Clinton strung us all along for seven months, caused people in his own team to spend I don't know how much money for witnesses that had to be hauled before the grand jury, all because he refused at the outset to say what he may say in his testimony. That's another area in which the world changes. One of the other ways in which this gets humanized is the relationship with the president and his family. I want to pop up yet another Fox News Opinion Dynamics poll question about whether Mrs. Clinton knew about this. Does she believe that her husband had sex? 65% say yes, 17% say no. But Mara, you've got a different insight on this. I think, look, this is also one of the complete unknowables. I mean no, what does that mean? Does she know in her heart of hearts? Does she know meaning that he told her about it? I don't think we'll ever know that, nor do I think we necessarily should ever know that. This is a marriage and marriages are very complicated and certainly Clinton sounds like it's one that's more complicated than most. I think that one of the things that I have been told though is one of the most difficult things for the president is dealing with his family. All along he's had to decide how much of this he wants to tell his wife and daughter, that's what I've been told. And one of the things he's doing only very recently is completely leveling with them. And Mrs. Clinton is one of his closest advisors. She's one of the very few people without the danger of getting a subpoena and she's involved in this strategy and that's one of the reasons it's taken so long. I differ with you, Honest Mara. I read this week where Jim Carville, the president's political advisor, said that when he told Mrs. Clinton about the Jennifer Flower situation, what was breaking, her response was not, dog on it, my husband's been cheating, what's wrong? It was, how's Bill? There was a sense of sympathy that he was trapped in a political mess. And I sense, look, I mean, I don't know, there seems to be an element of hypocrisy in this. Maybe it's the case they have an open marriage. Maybe she doesn't object to the idea that he has a sexual appetite that's greater than hers. He likes to do things and says, go right ahead. And it's the American people and maybe the press that has the problem. Well, I can see the mail now, go ahead. I'm not even going to touch that one, but I will say this. Mrs. Clinton did say on the Today Show, first of all, she said, if these allegations are serious, the American people should be very concerned about them. It means that these allegations are true. I'm sorry, if these allegations are true, they would be very serious and the American people should be concerned about them. I mean, she said many different things in that interview. One of them was, of course, we know everything there is to know about each other and we love each other and trust each other and respect each other. But also, she denied these allegations. What does that suggest to you? If she says we know everything about each other, maybe she knows her husband. I think the American people, the historians at this point, know who Bill Clinton is. They know his character. Well, that being the case, let's go back to the very beginning of this. The president made a very public statement that you're going to see over and over and over again, including here, when he was wrapping up an event in the Roosevelt Room. And he made a quick statement, I think it was in the Roosevelt Room, a quick statement to the press. And here's what he said. But I want to say one thing to the American people. I want you to listen to me. I'm going to say this again. I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky. I never told anybody it's a lie, not a single time, never. These allegations are false, and I need to go back to work for the American people. I think that statement is almost more, put him in a more difficult position than anything he said in the deposition in the Paula Jones case. I think there was no doubt on the part of the American people when they heard him say that what he meant. Not only that. I've talked to people who are familiar with Monica Lewinsky's testimony, and they say that there is no way that her testimony will bear out any idea, some kind of one-way, look ma, no hands sexual activity between the two of them, where she was the giver and he was the taker and he never did anything. And so even if he were to try to construct for the purpose of getting around an apparent lie in the Paula Jones case, some sort of highly legalistic testimony, he would still run into conflicts from her testimony and such other evidences may have accumulated bearing out her testimony. So my sense about this is that there's no way anything like that could possibly apply. Let me suggest that the American people would say, we appreciate the fact that you've come clean now Mr. President, and let's move on. Yes I know, but he's got to come clean. How clean do you think the American people want him to be? Do you think coming clean means coming out and saying, well you see I was there, but it didn't mean any person, you see I'm not just any person, I'm the president or whatever. In fact I've heard you say this, what if he says, hey look I was trying to save my family from embarrassment and it's none of your business anyway my sex life. But how do you save your family from embarrassment without somehow obstructing the investigation? Well that's a tough question. He definitely lied, I think the man lied, I don't know that, but that's my perception of events. But maybe, I think mostly American people would be forgiving if he said, look I was trying to save myself from humiliation and I don't think it's any of your business, it wasn't about the public operation or the presidency, this is not about foreign affairs or even domestic policy, this is about my house. Domestic affairs. Well, one of the best things the president has going for him obviously is the support of the American people and the overwhelming desire of the public for this to be over. People are saying stop, enough, let's just get this over with. Would you impeach him Britt? But I do, I think the difficulty for the president is that by doing that he opens up a whole other can of worms. And one thing I was told by one presidential advisor is what they're mostly worried about tomorrow is that he doesn't try to outlaw Ken Starr. In other words, all this legal hair splitting that we're hearing about, the definition of sex, what is it, that that's not going to fly because it's going to basically feed into a public perception of the president that has been established for years. Which is that he shades the truth. Between some sort of legalizing or legalistic explanation and basically I lied. That's right, well that's what it sounds like. That's a lousy choice. It's a lousy choice. It's a lousy choice. Unless he's Stonewall. There's one other thing and I don't know the way of time to pop it up, but we did a Fox News opinion dynamics poll question on whether he would try to get out of testifying tomorrow. Is there any possibility? I don't think so. What do you think? Well I must tell you, I wouldn't rule it out. I know that there are people, I'm thinking with the investigators side of this, that will believe it when they see it. It's a little late now. Yeah, it's too late. I think he's got himself in a trap. In fact, I think there is a rising expectation that he will now address the American people and the question is how will he answer that issue? How will he deal with the fact that he went before the camera and said one thing and now is trying to say another? Okay, and very quickly, yes or no, would you, and I mean yes or no folks, would you advise him to make an address to the nation? Yes. I'm not in the business of giving presidential advice, but everybody else wants him to and I think it's likely he will. Absolutely, gotta do it. Okay, panel, thank you so much and I'm sure he's taking notes. Now let's check in with Katherine Crier to find out what's ahead this week on Fox Files. Katherine? Thanks, Tony. From the effects of wind and water we are losing the fertile topsoil that took nature thousands of years to create. The 1930s dustbowl warned us all that food cannot be grown without topsoil. Today American farmers are leading a change in the way they work the land so they can feed the world's growing population. Instead of the old methods of plowing, many use no-till farming which leaves the soil virtually undisturbed, reducing erosion by as much as 90 percent. Stalks and leaves help to hold the soil in place, improving wildlife habitat and keeping our waterways cleaner. Conservation efforts now save nearly a billion tons of soil a year. As stewards of the land, farmers have a duty to preserve Mother Earth and as a leading agri-processor, the Archer Daniels Midland Company salutes no-till farmers for making a difference in the lives of people now and for generations to come. People who should know better are acting as if the President's appearance plus any subsequent public statements will put an end to the controversy. But legal proceedings aren't like TV courtroom dramas. A good guy doesn't gallop in at ten minutes before the hour, expose the bad guys and tie up loose ends just like that. That's the difference between Perry Mason and Ken Starr. The Lewinsky case challenges all of us. It demands that we figure out what we want from prosecutors, presidents and ourselves and it asks us to decide how seriously we take our laws, morals and constitution. At the heart of LeFerre Lewinsky are simple questions. Did the President lie and cover up? If so, should he go? Come Monday, 23 grand jurors, one President and a handful of lawyers will make some history. But that will be the final chapter because someday folks, you and I, the American people, will have to render the final verdict. That's it for today.
