For a brief summary now of where things stand this morning at the White House and on Capitol Hill, we turn again to Scott Pelley. Scott.
Good morning, Charles. We are expecting the President to be heading to church this morning. Part of what he has described is the healing of his broken spirit.
But at the same time, his attorneys are attacking the Kinstar Report vigorously.
In a defense that they released yesterday, those attorneys said that Kinstar hoped that the shock value of his report would overcome any of its legal shortcomings.
The President's lawyer, David Kendall, accused Star of putting almost pornographic material in that report.
He said that the President's answers to some of the questions that he had been asked under oath may have been false, but that was only because the President was confused or mistaken.
You will recall that the President said in the Paula Jones sexual harassment suit that he had never had sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky, only remembered seeing her around the White House on three or four occasions, and couldn't remember any specific time that he was alone with her.
Kinstar, of course, is arguing that the President said those things in an effort to beat that lawsuit.
Tomorrow, the President is off to New York to raise money for Democrats.
One of his lawyers said today that the President has already been punished, and now is the time for the gift of forgiveness.
