I recommend a diet that includes 20% fat, 15% protein, and 65% complex carbohydrates. Foods such as potatoes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Beyond adequate complex carbohydrates in your diet, water is the single most important thing for an effective, safe training program. Dehydration robs the body of strength and has a direct effect on your performance. Thirst is often not a good indicator. You need 8 ounces of water before you exercise, and 2 to 4 ounces every 15 to 20 minutes during vigorous exercise, and then again 8 ounces after. This is just to replenish your body's natural fluids. Fourth and finally, any exercise program should include rest. Allow yourself to get adequate sleep for the body to rejuvenate itself, and muscles need at least 48 hours between strength workouts. The importance of being in shape to ski cannot be overstressed, especially when it comes to staying warm, skiing longer and thereby enjoying it more, and reducing your risk of injury. Another way to reduce your risk of injury is to pay attention to a piece of equipment that's often mishandled and neglected, your release system. You ought to treat it with a little respect. Can't touch this. Can't touch this. Can't touch this. The binding companies have taken a lot of time in research, R&D, research and development, into finding out what makes a binding a little bit better and safer for the skier. Break it down. If you see, they're a little bit more maneuverable now, the toe pieces. You have some that have gone to an upward release. From side to side, lateral or inside-outside movement. So the problem comes in the negligence of the skier, him or herself or their family, of not one, checking the bindings, two, make sure the snow's off the boots. Really clear it out. Check your binding even in the morning before you get on the mountain. Let's say you've had them professionally checked. See if the thing is working. So I really believe that the technology is there and it keeps growing. And I'm glad to see it keep growing. And we need to keep working on it. We all appreciate good design, especially when it comes to ski bindings and ski fashion, when the GGP Ski Magazine 1991 Buyers Guide continues the latest designs for the upcoming season. Plus, we'll turn to snowboarding and discover that the latest equipment may convert the skier into a wave rider. Don't fly away. Along the edge of San Francisco Bay, just off the Embarcadero, you'll discover the Fog City Diner. So leave your troubles behind, but bring your Visa card, because at Fog City they take things easy, but they don't take American Express. Visa, it's everywhere you want to be. High performance Serengeti sunglasses slash glare boost contrast and self-adjust to changing light conditions for optimum visual performance. Because if you can't see it, you can't ski it. Serengeti sunglasses only from Corning Optics. Welcome back to the GGP Ski Magazine 1991 Buyers Guide. You know, high-tech innovation is not only found in ski hardware, it's present in ski software as well. The new materials that are used in ski fashion are rugged and waterproof. No matter how good they are, you've still got to look hot. Did you think last year's ski wear was about as wild as it could get? Think again. Obermeyer, the Aspen-based manufacturer, started by Klaus Obermeyer, has introduced patterns, designs, and so many colors, you're sure to be noticed. The look is clearly international, and it's not only in ski apparel, it's in ready-to-wear as well. Function and comfort are industry buzzwords, but now you can look good and feel good as well. Designs at Rothy are also riding the wave of innovation and style. Really new and important in the Rothy line this year is, first of all, our Steamboat collection, which is a collection to be worn by racers, but is extremely popular for recreational skiers today because of its look. Also, very important for men this year is the use of color, as bright as anything that you'll find in the women's line. It's exciting for men to have this kind of multi-colored choice. And also featured today was the Luna suit, and what is really outstanding about it is that it's very fashionable with a stretched bottom, and when you need rinsed resistance, we have the shell pant that slips right over the top of it and still looks completely fashionable. We've always, in our men's fashions, we've always modeled them around the World Cup outfits, the Swiss, Canadian, and Spanish ski team outfits. We're staying with a classic World Cup look. We've always been very focused on the men's fashion, and we've always been very focused on the women's fashion. The Swiss, Canadian, and Spanish ski team outfits, we're staying with the classic World Cup look. We've also come in with what we call Style 2, which is style 2 is generated out of the world championship line. What we've done in the women's line, we're looking to do more oversized, rounder silhouettes on the upper portion of the garment. And a lot more tapered on the lower portion. Well, we're really excited about it this year because we've been able to tie it graphically and color it with our ski program. Indeed, we've considered the aesthetic part of that too, so that it's very pleasing to the figure, shows off a good, sporty figure, but very unprofessional. You can also dress up your older outfits with a creative use of accessories. Gloves, hats, and scarves are a great way to spice up your wardrobe. Sunglasses and goggles are also regarded sometimes as accessories, when in reality they're a vital piece of your equipment. There are thousands of sunglasses on the market, but the great style you have for wearing around town may not be appropriate for the more rugged conditions in the mountains. In higher altitude, the sun's intensity increases rapidly. Its effects are magnified. Ultraviolet radiation is greater in this environment and is much more damaging to your eyes, so your eyewear is crucial. A specifically designed sunglass for these extreme conditions is the best way to protect your eyes. For example, Corning Optics manufactures Serengeti sunglasses. Their high performance all-weather Vermilion line was developed to meet the demands of extreme daylight conditions. Your sunglasses should provide two basics, protect you from both Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B radiation, and enhance contrast and reduce glare to see those moguls. Frames are more than a fashion statement. Not only should they fit, they should also provide the widest possible field of vision. So take a closer look at what you're wearing. The difference is worth seeing. Sunglasses can also be useful when you're relaxing in a lodge full of bright neon-colored skiers. This techno-color explosion that's evident in skiing can also be found in the relatively new sport of snowboarding. As the fastest growing winter sport, snowboarding is reaching record numbers of skiers. When we return, an asymmetrical twist to the sport hits the hill this year as the GDC ski magazine 1991 fireside continues. Desens, technology that you can wear. Seize the high ground with Desens skiwear. Now, I'm minding my own business, and this guy on the phone is chewing my ear off about how I gotta leave AT&T. Save big, wear better. So, now I'm wondering what's in the fine print. Like, where do these savings come from? If I got a problem with my bill, can I speak to a machine or can I maybe talk to somebody with a pulse? They say switch and save. Don't take their word for it. Have them put it in writing. So I said to the guy, let's put it in writing. Guy says, excuse me? You know and I know, it's still not AT&T. GGP ski magazine's 1991 buyer's guide will return right after this. Come on, you gotta be kidding me. No way. When it comes to all time great sports moments, I'll take Hank Aaron's 715 home run. My book is the Franklin Harris' immaculate reception in the 72 AMC playoffs. What's your pick? Is this Olympic hockey triumph one of America's greatest sports moments? Industry experts estimate that over 95% of the areas in North America allow snowboarding and that there are over 300,000 snowboarders in the States. It's not surprising as more and more skiers give it a try that snowboards take on a liking to snow skis in both design and construction. As snowboarding explodes into a new season and record numbers of alpine skiers cross over, new technology in the sport has taken another turn and another and another just to keep up. I could point out three things that are really taking off in the snowboarding scene this year. One would be the development of a real alpine snowboard made for a more traditional GNS kind of carving person. Manufacturers call it asymmetrical sidecut design. In common English, that means the sidecuts on the board are matched to your feet. Up for toe turns, down for heel turns. That means more edge on the snow and better carving down the hill. Second point would be skiers crossing over into the industry for the first time in record numbers. Snowboarders want to make the transition even easier with hard shell boots. The stiffer boot offers more stability, precision and power plus the feel of alpine skiing. That's important when you're just starting out. And that has a lot to do with the third point which is the fact that rental and lessons programs are mushrooming across the country giving access to these people. And selling them on a brand new sport. If snowboarding doesn't interest you, how about a bobsled ride down the mountain or a sled dog tour through the Rockies? And you thought just skiing was going to keep you busy. There's so much to do in the winter time besides skiing. Here now is a peek at some other winter sport fun. Vail Colorado is best known for its skiing. A wild ride down this public bobsled run is the latest attraction. At over 40 miles per hour the one and a half mile course pulls four G's so anyone can now fulfill their need for speed. It was great. We had to kind of give it the old one, two, um and it did it. We got it. We came in first. We're the fastest sled today. Another way through the winter landscape is by snowmobile. After the first big snowfall these riders in Aspen take off into the back country. The speed is up to you. Fast or slow, the scenery is spectacular. When you stop to take a look. Travel back in time with Buster Tom Daley and his Alaskan sled dogs. Dogs really love to see what's new. What's around the corner. New smells and their eagerness makes it a lot more fun for us. It's an escape from the modern world. A definite change of pace and a return to a pioneering era. Both man and dog answered the call of the wild. The Eskimos used it to haul their food around in their camp. They had to be mobile because there was no supply of food in any one place. So they had to cruise around and they had these dogs hanging out by their campfires asking for handouts. They made a deal. You go and we'll give you the leftovers. So join the team, climb aboard, slide off into history. In Steamboat Springs, Marty Perlman can take you away from it all. For 12 years, he's flown balloons high above the more populated resort areas. Close to that little people. It has a ball on the very top, a grass ball. You get a little more or less, give half hour, hour long balloon flights and some real pretty mountain crossings. You can see from looking around here we have quite a few mountains across. Look into a hot air balloon ride next time you're in the mountains during the cold of winter. Another way to heat things up involves the aerobic exercise of cross country skiing. Modern equipment makes it easy to start and the relatively new technique of skating has converted many devoted alpine skiers to the Nordic way. If you enjoy great exercise in wide open spaces, the experience of cross country is available at a track near you. Or perhaps you're ready for the open-heeled freedom and the challenge of telemark turns. This ancient form of skiing with its graceful fluid movements is back on the hill. Those that telemark claim it's the purest form of skiing. With so much to choose from, winter never lasts long enough. Next time you're in the mountains, take advantage of the short season. Telemark skiing is also increasing in popularity. Devoted traditionalists of the telemark turn claim that it's the only way to ski. You ought to give it a try sometime, but before you do it, be sure your legs are in shape. For those of you who don't care how you ski, but where you ski, you've got to look at some of our favorite resorts. The G.G.P. ski magazine, 1991 Buyers Guide Returns, will take you on a tour of the finest places we'll visit this upcoming season. Don't go away. Along the edge of San Francisco Bay, just off the Embarcadero, you'll discover the Fog City Diner. Elegant as a formal dining car, yet friendly as a main street cafe, where people reserve weeks in advance to taste the red curry mussel stew, or the grilled chicken with roasted peppers. So leave your troubles behind, but bring your Visa card, because at Fog City they take things easier, but they don't take American Express. Leave them. It's everywhere you want to be. The best skiing in the world, from the 1991 Buyers Guide Returns. The faster you go in life, the more complicated it gets. Which is why Security Pacific has come up with a better idea in checking, with no per-check charges or ready-teller ATM fees. Sometimes, all you need to make life simpler, is a little perspective. Introducing Simply Better Checking. Security Pacific. Simply Better. I'm Warren Millard, produced my latest feature film, Extreme Winter, presented by Audi Quattro. We traveled the world in search of the extremes. All across the United States and Canada, France, the Soviet Union, we even went to Antarctica. We filmed the world's best extreme skiers, and sometimes, the extremely dumb. Warren Millard's Extreme Winter. Extreme Winter's coming soon to theaters all over Winston and Eastern Washington. Check local listings for the date and time of the show near you. More and more skiers are taking three-day weekend trips instead of full-week vacations. Many resorts are developing packages to take advantage of this trend. Over the course of all winter, we'll visit many of these resorts and see what they have to offer the expert and the novice skier, as well as the non-skier and the op-raise ski enthusiast. 100 miles west of Denver, Colorado, lies one of the world's best ski resorts, Vail and Beaver Creek. This season, Vail Village will serve as our headquarters. This bustling town located in the heart of the Rocky Mountain is an American version of the classic European ski town. This resort houses over 90 restaurants and bars to choose from, as well as a vast number of exclusive boutiques to satisfy any shopper's needs. But the main attraction in Vail is the mountain itself. Vail is one of the largest skiable mountains in the world. There are seven high-speed quad chairs more than any other resort, which service over 6,000 acres of skiable terrain, including some of the best champagne powder you'll ever find. This season, we'll also visit nearby Aspen Mountain. Elegance, culture, and great skiing best describe the hills of Aspen. The adjacent areas of Buttermilk, one of the best beginner confluxes, and Snowmass, built from scratch for skiers' vulnerabilities, are just a few of the amenities Aspen has to offer. For those of you who just can't wait to get started, it only takes 13 minutes in sheltered comfort to get from the bottom of Aspen Mountain to the top. Aspen is the most cosmopolitan small town in the world, and is the uncommon beauty and the natural splendor of the Rocky Mountains. To the north of Aspen is a small western town called Steamboat Springs, better known as Ski Town USA. Over 100 ski runs crisscross four mountains and 2,500 acres of skiing, some of the most challenging terrain in the country. Steamboat is famous for having fun, whether on or off the slopes. It's a town filled with friendly people and real live cowboys. Some down-home excitement? Just frequent any of the 60 bars and restaurants in the town. We'll also travel to Crested Butte, tucked away in the southwestern Rockies. It's a town of about 1,500 permanent residents who all seem to know and like each other. The first thing you'll notice about Crested Butte is the old west architecture. The old town hall and the marshal's office are still in use. The resort itself has some of the finest skiing in the Rockies. While Alpine Skiing is a staple of the area, Crested Butte is the telemarketing center of the whole world. This town is considered a year-round recreational playground and will host the 1991 U.S. Nationals. And we'll journey to the beautiful and rugged mountains of Whistler, British Columbia. Whistler is located just over 30 miles from Vancouver, Canada's third largest metropolitan area and one of the busiest seaports on the west coast. Just minutes from this big city, you can find some of the prettiest scenery in the world. British Columbia is known for its wilderness and vast waterways. Shannon Falls is one of the most expansive in North America. Whistler Mountain is known for having the largest vertical drop of any ski area on the continent. And then overseas to Albertville, France, host of the 1992 Winter Olympics. Val d'Azerra is known for its rich racing tradition, as well as its 116 lifts and 26,000 acres of skiing. On the edge of town is France's first funicular, which transports 500 skiers a mile and a half up the slopes through a tunnel in only four minutes. There are 180 miles of ski runs and 18 miles of cross-country trails to choose from. Fresh air, French cuisine, and fabulous scenery attract visitors from across the globe. This village, a mile high in the Soaring Alps, is an ultimate experience for skiers of all abilities. Back in the good old USA to the west coast, it's one of the most gorgeous vistas found in any ski resort in the world. America's largest ski area overlooks the Sierra, rising 10,000 feet over Lake Tahoe. Highest resort in the region is appropriately named Heavenly. Twenty square miles of skiable terrain divided by the California-Nevada border. Heavenly Valley's 24 lifts transport up to 31,000 skiers per hour into two states. Of course, with apres ski activity, just try your luck in the state-line casinos where the action never stops. Some of these resorts are famous not only for their breathtaking ski mountains and their excellent lodging facilities, but also for the special events they host during the wintertime. Coming up, we'll take a look at some of these events as the GGP Ski Magazine 1991 Buyers Guide continues. Descent, technology that you can wear. Experience the world's first solar apparel. Descent's exclusive and patented Solar Alpha fabric absorbs ultraviolet rays, guaranteeing warmth without the sacrifice of style, function and comfort. Wear the Descent technology. Along the edge of San Francisco Bay, just off the Embarcadero, you'll discover the Fog City Diner. Elegant as a formal dining car, yet friendly as a Main Street Cafe, where people reserve weeks in advance to taste the red curry mussel stew or the grilled chicken with roasted peppers. So leave your troubles behind, but bring your Visa card, because at Fog City, they take things easy, but they don't take American Express. It's everywhere you want to be. We'll be back with more of the 1991 Buyers Guide after these. What comes next you may ask yourself. How can it change even more, you may wonder. It was only a few years ago wasn't it that television was just four channels. Today, thanks to cable technology, it's over 40. And while we may not watch them all, it's nice to have the option, isn't it? As it will soon be, being able to order up a movie, select a camera angle, or someday, maybe even a president, right from our living rooms. For some, maybe it's happening all too quickly. But for the rest of us, it's the future. A future that's being shaped today by a television company that already brings the world into more than 8 million homes all across the country. Changing forever the way we see and understand and bringing us tomorrow. Whatever in the world it is, tomorrow will bring.
