If you're looking to give a piece of furniture or a closet door or maybe even your fireplace a bit of extra pizzazz, you might want to think about decorative accents. Hi, I'm Chris Madden, and today on Interiors by Design, we're going to find out how these accents are made and are finished to create the perfect touch for your home. Also today, if you're tired of that tone-on-tone look in your bedroom, stay with us because we're going to visit with a designer who turns sleeping spaces into living color. But first, you know, if you're a fun and adventurous person, your home should definitely reflect that spirit. And what better place to start than in the kitchen? And that's exactly what designer Trish Gorman did in her own home outside of Philadelphia. In planning the design for the kitchen, it was an older home, 18th century, with small rooms, so it was really necessary to break down one of the structural walls and add the space of the adjacent room to it to make one large, open country kitchen. The layout of the kitchen is a pretty important feature of the home, clearly, and a tight cleanup space and cooking area that the cook can involve herself in without the traffic flow is real important. And I hope that that was achieved in this space so that the seating for comfort and TV viewing and or music listening or just for reading is in an adjacent area which doesn't really interfere with the cook. To tie the kitchen and living space together, Trish installed cabinetry, which hides kitchenware as well as the TV and stereo. Each piece has been stained and stenciled to create a fun look for the entire room. The cabinets were designed in keeping with a furniture vintage look where each cabinet was designed as a piece of furniture, and I wanted to achieve that here. And the cabinets were made out of wormy chestnut, which is an old vintage wood. In fact, they don't have any new wormy chestnut today, so it's all old renovated wood. Since each of the cabinets takes on an image of themselves and a presence for itself, it was important to let each of them stand alone. In doing so, we chose to have some of the panels remain stained and waxed, and the other sections become painted with original milk paint, which was then blow torched and applied with many different coats to give it a layered effect. As if the paint had been on there for many years and had chipped away through its age. The open fret work at the top of the cabinetry is not only decorative, but also covers the air conditioning vents, allowing for proper circulation. In the seating area, Trish used a combination of bright and bold fabrics to give this space life. The upholstered seating is overstuffed and very comfortable, and we chose to add many fabrics and mix and match to have that whimsical, fun look. We used French fabrics and brought in a few colors that were complementary of each other that gave the room life. And yet was very practical because if one side became dirty or soiled for any reason, it could be turned and reversed and changed at any time. The coffee table, like the seating area, also combines fun and function. It's a new piece made to look old, made out of pine and stenciled to give it a whimsical look. It not only adds interest and color to the design of the room, but it's also practical for putting your feet up on. This comfortable and fun space is divided up by an island, which serves both sides of the room. The design of the island is really fun because it is viewed from all angles, and yet services and is very functional from one side for the kitchen, which houses the sink. But yet from the other side, it's viewed from the entertainment side. And on the entertainment side or the seating area side, you needed to have it look like one thing and very comfortable and have flexibility for storage and display and tray storage. And yet there is a hidden door that flips down that becomes an auxiliary tabletop surface for extra space when you're on the comfortable, casual side. When you're around the other work side of the kitchen, you have your daily functions of dishwasher and trash storage and a very, very large sink that is reminiscent of the old laundry tub sinks. In the kitchen area, the original fireplace provides a wonderful ambiance to dine in front of, while also giving Trish an auxiliary cooking area. And the professional cooking range is reminiscent of the type found in an old country home. Instead of using traditional kitchen chairs, Trish has put semi-formal chairs in the window area. The large window, the architectural window, is a very inviting view to the outside, letting outside nature come in. And what better place to sit in front of the window and be able to just relax and look outside and yet enjoy what's in front of you and be a part of the kitchen as well. So I opted to place comfortable seating in the bay window, which allows you to do that. To give the entire area a finishing touch, Trish has accentuated the playfulness of the room with treasured items. The accessories really start to make the space come alive, and I think they become a person's, well really it's a personal statement. Clearly, things are treasures that are handed down from families. Some are purchases, new purchases that you end up finding someplace and cherishing. And I think that I've tried to do that in the kitchen because it is a love of mine to be in the kitchen. And it's nice to have all those around me. Because of her fun design work, Trish has created a room which has easily become the favorite room in her home. It's a great congregating area. It's where I bring people together. People naturally gravitate towards the kitchen. It's the heart of the home. And it's the place where everything begins. It begins in the morning and it ends in the evening. And it's a place to gather and a place to share. It is clearly, I guess, my favorite special place. If you'd like to make some bold design moves in your own kitchen, here are some things to keep in mind. Give cabinetry a variety of finishes, staining and stenciling them with various designs and colors. Design an island for the space, which combines function and fun. Choose several fabrics to mix and match on overstuffed furniture. Use large, comfortable chairs in the kitchen. And accessorize with personal items to make the space really come alive. Designing a bedroom with rich jewel tones is a perfect contrast to the tone on tone look that is so popular today. And that's exactly what designer Sarah Zook did in this guest bedroom right here in Denver. And Sarah used really bright colors in here. Very interesting. Thank you. Well, my clients wanted something that would be very warm and cozy and yet not stuffy. It isn't. No, and so we thought we would do something in their favorite colors, which are blue and green, and kind of do a juxtaposition of the contemporary and the traditional. You know, it's really a fun guest bedroom and I bet everyone just feels so good when they come in here. And I love how you have a backdrop. Now, is it paint or is it wallpaper? It's wallpaper and it is manufactured in the way that it is a hand-screened paper. And so it's made panel by panel as opposed to just a roll of wallpaper. OK, so it's very, very custom. Yes. Now the carpet, the rug is very bold in colors. Very, very unusual. Deep teal green. And then we decided to do the fun ribbony effect of the border, which is cut in as opposed to being woven in. But it allowed us to get more colors in besides the blue and the green. Yeah, you really do. You've added the yellow and the hot pink. Now, I love the way you say the ribbon effect that goes around it because you see on the top of this beautiful canopy bed, that wonderful ribbon effect of the wood. Yes, and this is a bed made by my company, New Classics, and it has been a fun design because of that canopy, the way they make the sandwiching of the wood to create that curve on the top. Yeah, and you know, it is traditional, but it's a waterbed, which I thought was sort of cool. That is sort of unusual, especially for a canopy bed. Yeah. Now the fabric that you've chosen for the duvet and the pillows, it's a really rich, many different colors of blue and green going on in there. Yes, and the fabric is sort of unusual because it's a more traditional pattern with the paisley kind of look and yet a little bit of an oriental flavor. And yet the clarity of the colors, of course, punches it and makes it feel that little bit more contemporary. Yes, and the detail on the pillows is exquisite. I love the welting that you've put on. It's really very exciting. And then you come down here to this very nice bench. Well, the bench we did overscaled and once again rather contemporary just as a way of saying that usually, you know, when you're going to do a very traditional bed, you normally wouldn't put a more contemporary bench, but it was fun to do this contrast. You know, I also love a big bench at the end of a bed. You throw your covers there or your books or a wonderful throw. It's a nice idea in a guest bedroom. What about the chaise? This is also, you've done it in the same fabric. You haven't chosen any other fabrics in here. We did that because we have obviously a somewhat lively background in both the wallpaper and in the rug. So we felt by putting it on the bullnose cornices and on the drabries and the bedspread and the chaise that that would unite the room and just make it feel more cohesive. It really does, especially on the window treatments. I love the way you've done that. Now the piece behind us is it looks like it's been around for a while. It's not a contemporary piece. No, this is a treasure from the owner and has been in her family as well as the chair. And it's kind of fun, you know, to take something that has a family history and put it into a space. And then the more we worked with it, we kept thinking at the curves and we thought, gee, it would be really fun to take off on that design and continue on with the mirror in the oval shape. I love the punch of the blues in that mirror. That is a great piece. It's actually, yes, clear blue glass with kind of an opalescent type of glass. And then that once again we took and repeated onto the armoire and had custom doorknobs made that were in blown glass. And this is, as you can see, a traditional style in the armoire, but we just kind of added that as an extra punch. It really is. It just sort of makes it all come together. Also, the little pieces that you see around the room, the table, looks like something that they might have picked up on their travels, which is always so nice and personal to add to a guest bedroom. Now, Sarah, you have a lot of display space in here too, which I think is important in a bedroom. Yes, and as I had mentioned, they travel a great deal. And so this was a way of them being able to have small remembrances on this bookcase to just, you know, say, oh, this was a special trip and have personal photographs and so on. And it's probably fun for their guests to be able to look at that too and get a little sense of the history of the family. Very much so. Well, thank you so much, Sarah. This has been really fun. Thank you. And if you'd like to add some colorful touches to your guest bedroom, here are some things to keep in mind. Create a colorful backdrop to the room with a wall covering and a vibrant design. Choose a solid color rug, which has a bold border design. Select furnishings and update them with contemporary fixtures. Pick bed coverings, which incorporate all the colors of the room in an interesting design pattern. And choose accent pieces, which bring additional design interest to the space. Still to come on Interiors by Design, we'll find out how decorative accents can give your room a finishing touch. Decorative accents and ornamentation can be added to new furnishings to make them one-of-a-kind pieces. Or these same accents can also give new life to old furnishings. Scott's Sofa designs and installs all kinds of decorative accents from his shop in Denver, the SMS Studio. And Scott, it looks to me, looking at these pieces, that you can use this in virtually any room in your house. Absolutely, Chris. It's a very flexible product that can be used very formally or very informally. So from the largest piece down to the smallest detail is what you're saying? Certainly. From a lampshade all the way up to a complete architectural installation. Now, when you pick it up, I'm amazed because it's so flexible it feels like almost like a cookie dough. It is a dough. In fact, it's a secret formula dough that has been used in architectural ornament and decorative treatment for many, many years. In fact, it was used extensively in palaces such as Versailles and those like it in Europe. I see. Okay. And I love the way it comes in all the different patterns. I mean, this looks sort of like a modified fleur de lis. Here's an acanthus leaf. You can almost picture this in Versailles. Certainly. And there are also informal designs such as acorn leaves, acorns leaves, everything all the way up to... Anything you can think of. Egg and dart. Certainly. Well, let's see some of the pieces because I've been eyeing this ever since I came into your shop. I love this. Thank you. This is a lambrican that we designed and built. My cabinet maker made a wood frame for us. And we've used a wood, standard wood crown molding and then decorated it with composition ornament. It is French Empire in style. The composition is applied and you can wrap and actually create dimension. For instance, here on the corners, we've shaped it to fit the corner of the crown. It is amazing to me with the braided trim and then even these little birds are made out of the composition. Yes, they are and they're doubled in such a way so to add more dimension later. Great. Beautiful, beautiful piece. Thank you. Now, Scott, what about these pieces? You've got... It looks like you've almost got a pair of Gothic panels. This is a commissioned project. In fact, it will be used to cover a wall safe on hinges. Oh, clever. The client ordered it specifically. What we've done here is our cabinet maker has made a blank out of wood. We have applied here a somewhat Gothic feeling capital, but we've shaped it and formed it during the installation process to give it great depth and dimension. So you're actually going to put that over here. Certainly. Great. It'll look perfect. Thank you. Now, what about this right here? How do we get that? This is also composition ornament, lineal, and it's wrapped during installation to fit the contours. I love touching this. It really does have great hand. It's great. You can form it around all types of radius and curves, bends. So then you're going to put a mirror behind this, then do a little faux finish or painting and you've got a pair of them. Certainly. It seems like it's very easy and that it would work even in a kitchen, right? Yes. Here we have a panel that we have done, a sample. This is an example, for instance, of something a little bit less formal. Yes. It is the composition ornament, which is shown here unfinished, and then done in a distressed painted finish. Over here. It could look very elegant actually in a kitchen. Certainly. Somewhere where you wouldn't normally think to use it. You know, the lamp shade I think is so clever and it looks like it's just a little teeny piece of detail of the composition going around it. Yes, it is. And I used a gold color to accent the black and it's just a simple little detail that can add a lot of mileage to a piece. I also love this box because I don't know if you know this, but I collect boxes, but I've never seen one with a medallion on top of it. It's a found piece that actually was missing hardware and we covered the missing spot with a composition medallion. It's a little hole you just put that composition on. What about this? Because this is a glass hurricane lamp. Certainly. This is an example of the self-adhering properties of the product. It can be applied to mirror and glass. In this particular case, we finished it before applying it. And it just sort of sucks onto it. Just grabs right on. Okay, now I saw some beautiful finishes here. You do everything, but these are incredible. Tell me about these. Well, these are examples of the many different types of custom finish work that we do. For instance, this is something that's more informal, a faux stone finish, more formal. This is antique gilt. This is an example of the flexibility then with the product. You can make it look like many, many different things. Oh, it's unbelievable. Now you have picture frames out here for us. What is this? These are corners of stock lineal frame moldings. And you can see that when this is mitered because of the pattern repeat, it doesn't line up at the corners. Yeah, you can see almost a split right there. And it's a little bit boring. What we've done here is we've taken a composition corner. We've installed it in such a way as to form and wrap around and then color it to match. Makes it more formal, dresses it up a lot. That is so cool. It's unbelievable how you do it. Okay, I want to see how we do this because this is magical stuff. It's really remarkable. What we've done here is we take it and we put it on a hot steam table. Okay. This is a small acanthus leaf that we're going to dress up this corner with. You can see here that they've done a good job of matching the miter, but we'd like to punch it out a bit. To another layer. Exactly. Okay. So you put it on the boiling water? We put it on the steam table for 20 to 25 seconds. And in this particular case, it's unfinished or unprimed. I usually prime it ahead of time just to make it faster. I see. Okay. For when we do the finish work. I think we're just about cooked. That's amazing how flexible it's becoming. It's remarkable. Almost melting. What we do is in this particular case, we're going to double. You can see I've got a left and a right. And I'm going to put them back to back so that we create a totally three-dimensional motif. Look at that. That is so great. And then we form it around our corners and press it in place. As it cools, it begins to harden again. It looks like it's been there since the 18th century. I have to tell you. It certainly does, doesn't it? And it doesn't take that long. No, it doesn't. And with the finish work, it will blend in beautifully and look like an integral part of the corner. Absolutely. Well, thank you for showing us this real behind the scenes. This was great, Scott. My pleasure. And coming up next, we'll have a design term defined, so stay with us. If you're looking to give your furnishings an antique look, you might want to consider painting them with milk paint. As we saw in that fun multifunctional kitchen outside Philadelphia, designer Trish Gorman painted and stenciled her cabinetry with milk paint. Milk paint is a paint made out of milk, oil, lime, and color. It was first used on furniture and interior woodwork during the 1700s. Milk paint is one of the most durable paints ever invented. Today many shaker style furnishings are painted with milk paint. Well I hope you've enjoyed today's show.
