Tonight on Access Hollywood, it broke records in Tokyo so can AI conquer America? We take you to the New York premiere and reveal what caught Spielberg off guard. I'm a little stunned by all of this. We'll introduce you to the man who got Gwyneth over her Oscar night blues. Plus, Matt Lauer becomes a dad. The name, the sex, and the latest. Then why some of your favorite hit makers can't sell out their summer tours. And Catherine Blake's show, Mistake. I will leave now. I will go. No, don't go. We're just getting started. This is Access Hollywood for Wednesday, June 27, 2001. Don't look now. Spielberg is coming. Hi, everybody. I'm Nancy O'Dell. Hi, Nancy. Hi, folks. I'm Pat O'Brien. Let's get right to work with last night's big premiere in New York City of Spielberg's AI artificial intelligence, the jet-setting master director is about to take aim at the box office. And if AI's recent record-breaking success across the globe is any indication, current champ, the fast and the furious, better watch its back. Oh, wow. I didn't know. I'm making my note. You're important in Washington, D.C. right now. Such is the whirlwind life of Steven Spielberg. Arriving at his New York premiere to a heartfelt hug from wife Kate Capshaw. Straight off the plane from shooting with Tom Cruise, the legendary director had yet to learn this about his promising new film. Smashing the previous mark held by Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace, AI artificial intelligence's preview screenings in Japan rang up a record $2.6 million in just one night, pulling in almost 200,000 people in only 286 theaters. I just arrived, so I'm a little stunned by all of this. You're a machine. I'm a boy. Stay away from people. Only others like you are safe. Now the huge question is, how will the wildly anticipated film play stateside going into the crucial Fourth of July week? A stark and often disturbing fractured fairy tale from the minds of both Spielberg and the late Stanley Kubrick. It's the story of a robotic boy who just wants to be loved. Make no mistake, AI is not ET. But Steven's confident audiences will respond. They can make what they want of it, and they can embrace it, they can question it, as long as it stirs up some talk and leaves more questions unanswered, I think it would satisfy Stanley Kubrick in his memory and certainly would satisfy me. Get it! AI will try to take down the surprise number one film, The Fast and the Furious, starring Spielberg's old friend from Saving Private Ryan Vin Diesel. And George Anna Brewster, who knows, they've got a fight ahead of them. Look out! I know, I've got to check out the competition, that's why I'm here. Ha ha ha! And this competition is fierce. Respected reviewers are singing the praises of AI, and especially the brilliance of Haley Joel Osment. Do you think he deserves an Oscar nomination? I think so, you know, he is so good. This kid is going to go directly into adult roles. I guess I'll see what happens early next year, but I'm definitely happy that people are saying that, you know, I'm honoured. He's an extraordinary actor, but more importantly, he's one of the most extraordinary people I know. Ha ha ha! Nancy and I love that guy. Steven Spielberg heaping huge praise on young Haley Joel Osment. We think that definitely qualifies as our quote of the day. As for AI, it isn't Spielberg's only high profile summer film. Spielberg is also executive producing Jurassic Park 3, which opens three weeks from today. And tomorrow we'll have interviews with the stars of that movie and all the behind the scenes stories. Nancy? Well, absent from last night's AI premiere, Gwyneth Paltrow, good friend of both Steven Spielberg and star Jude Law. And ironically, Gwyneth was just across town and seeing another party. There's only one of me, people. I do the best that I can do, you know what I'm saying? While she would have liked to have been at the AI premiere supporting her uncle Morty, that would be Steven Spielberg, you and me, Gwyneth Paltrow was just down the street at New York's hip hotel, The Hudson, proudly standing by another close friend at his book party. Photographer Mario Testino, the man who Gwyneth credits for saving her on Oscar 1999, when she began to freak out at the after parties while celebrating her best actress win. It's just a very sort of unnatural experience to go through and to have that many sort of people's energy focused on you. So I was very kind of at odds with what was happening and very kind of outside myself. And then I walked into the party and I saw Mario and you know, I just, he's such a good person and he's so sparkly and he just took my hands and we started dancing to the Cuban band. But it was fun after that, no? After that moment, I started to enjoy it. So I owe it all to him. Testino snapped a candid picture from that night, which is featured in his new book, Alive. I think that the name of the book came from that photograph, Alive. You know, that's the most alive you can possibly be, I think. Well, today in Los Angeles, Martin Sheen pled guilty to trespassing at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Sheen, a longtime activist who has been arrested numerous times, unlawfully entered the Air Force Base last October with about two dozen other activists to protest a proposed space-based missile system. Pat. Meantime across the country, another premiere where the ultimate survivor hinted about a truly wild survivor three and one young gun sported a truly wild new look. Holy peroxide! Hollywood goes platinum at the premiere of Legally Blonde. Although we're not sure if these guys are legal, but one natural beauty and blonde in attendance was the star of the film, Reese Witherspoon. I think we should break up. What? In the movie, which hits theaters July 13th, Reese plays the super popular Elle Woods, who enrolls in law school to prove to her Ivy League boyfriend she can overcome the dumb blonde stereotypes. Reese, who is the current Cosmo cover gal, brought along husband Ryan Philippi, who could possibly make the cover of Military Weekly with his new look. It's the summer, you know, to keep cool and kind of, you know, switch it up a little bit. Speaking to somebody who is always cool, survivor host Jefferson Propes was on hand at the premiere last night, but he had Africa on his mind. I leave in a couple of days. I am literally packed and ready to go. Jeff will be joining the 16 new contestants of Survivor Africa at the Shaba Game Reserve in Kenya, coincidentally the same place where the 1966 will be born free was shot. The semi-arid reserve is 140 miles north of Nairobi and jumping with all things wild. The wildlife are everywhere. It is just stocked with zebras and giraffes and elephants and tigers. And this should be really spectacular and very difficult for the survivors. Oh! What I'm gonna be nervous for, the game is mine, baby. Today in theater is the Snoop Dogg movie star. Is this Jodie living at your mama house, running around on the streets like a little boy? The rap star makes his big debut as a gangster who's in love with another man's woman in the new gritty urban drama, Baby Boy. And at the premiere, he admits it was a role worth begging for. I wanted it, I had to have it. I mean, it was off the hook. I was glad that they gave me the opportunity to get on the big screen. Credit to director John Singleton, the man who 10 years ago introduced Hollywood to Cuba Gooding Jr. in the first of the so-called Hood trilogies, Boys in the Hood. And now we get Cuba's younger brother, Omar, who admitted that he got tips from the older Gooding on working with John. You know, he does a whole lot of rehearsing. He loves to do rehearsal, but it'll be good. It'll be good for him, just listen to him. It's a lot of comfort with all his homies to shoot me, my girl, and my baby. Tony! MTV VJ Tyrese lands the title role of a 20-year-old man forced to choose between those he loves and a life marked by violence. It's his first starring role, too, and he still can't quite believe his luck. It's a beautiful thing, man. I'm used to being on the red carpet because it's always about everybody else. It's the night. It's about the new family that I'm a part of. Baby Boy is in theaters now. I ain't the same, tantalum in it. I'm so happy that she's out, and I wish her a quick and full recovery. That's Cindy Crawford wishing friend and fellow supermodel Nikki Taylor well. Taylor was released from the hospital yesterday after spending two months recovering from a car accident. Taylor is in good condition and was released to a physical rehabilitation center. She's already fought a tough battle, but I'm sure she has a little bit of ways to go, even though she's out of the hospital. I just hope it goes well for her. For Crawford, who's seven months pregnant, things are going well, and she's not slowing down. Last night in Hollywood, she hosted the Omegas Spend an Evening with the Stars event, and just last week, she and husband Randy Gerber attended the Phase One Cancer Gala to benefit UCLA's Johnson Cancer Center. I feel pretty good now. I mean, I definitely feel pregnant, but I feel good. Well, yesterday Felicity star Carrie Russell and Anthony Kiedis, lead singer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, had to be rescued from the ocean. Russell, Kiedis, and two friends, including Carrie's Felicity co-star Amanda Foreman, were swimming at a beach outside of San Diego when they were caught in a riptide. Two lifeguards rushed out and brought in all four who were never in life-threatening danger. All are doing just fine today. Good news, Pat. That is good news. Now, how did the Today Show handle Matt Lauer's baby leave, plus the biggest summer concert busts, and Harry Potter, new scenes, and a special marketing ploy? But first, tonight's access info. Yesterday we told you that NBC pulled an episode of Weakest Link because it was discovered that a contestant on the show who won $92,000 was the ex-wife of an NBC executive. They were divorced 15 years ago, and she claimed she didn't know he worked at the network. Now the network will air the episode and she will keep her money. Access Hollywood brought to you by HBO. Originals ruled again last night, as long as the original is either a game show, reality show, or news magazine. At eight o'clock, millionaire and spy TV ruled. At nine o'clock, 60 Minutes 2 was big, and at 10, Dateline was topped. On the downside, NBC's two original sitcoms, Goldfish and Kristen Hanks. Well, Matt Lauer was a no-show for the Today Show this morning, and with good reason. He was changing diapers. My name's Katie Couric, along with Ann Curry. Matt has some important business he's dealing with. I'm sure we'll hear more about that. Important baby business for Matt Lauer. The Today Show co-host did an abrupt exit yesterday to be with his wife Annette, who went into labor and gave birth to their first child. Of course, we're playing the supreme's baby love, because today is a very special day for one baby. Brian Williams filled in for Matt this morning, as Katie Couric announced the new arrival. Jack Matthew Lauer, who was born yesterday, Annette and Matt are doing great. The baby's doing well, seven pounds, three ounces. Oh, I hadn't heard seven, three. Undoubtedly, a beautiful baby, knowing both parents, and we're just thrilled for everybody in the Lauer house. Big news around here. Congratulations, Matt, Annette, and little Jack. I've been so many places, I've been so many faces. Eminem and D12's Devil's Night CD is the number one selling album released this week, selling 372,000 copies. This is just a fraction of the 1.7 million copies that Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP sold, its first week out last year. Hot pills, pills, hot. As we reported, the album features the song Purple Pills, but this blatant drug reference was objectionable to radio stations. So after a little musical rehab, the lyric was changed for radio play to Purple Hills. Now today, MTV has agreed to air the video to the cleaned up version, but only late night. Hey, Red Red Red Red Currently, Eminem is in the middle of a world tour, but he's facing a roadblock down under. His first Australian tour is under threat by family and women's groups, who are requesting the government to deny Eminem a visa on the grounds that his past criminal activities and homophobic and misogynistic lyrics are a bad influence on young people. Over to TV now and tonight, Stole Food kicks off its second season on Showtime at 10 o'clock, while over on Comedy Central at 10.30, Seinfeld's back. Jerry's a guest and he stars on Prime Time Glick. Nancy? Well, still Ed, who can't sell out their summer tours and why? Plus the Harry Potter marketing boy and what Catherine shouldn't have said in tonight's moment. But first tonight's staggering stat, with the economy continuing to slow down, the networks are being hit hard. For the most part, the networks have discounted ad time and will bring in a billion dollars less than last year. Wondering where all the money went? Well, when was the last time you saw a dot com commercial? What, 10 million dollars? Everyone knows Publishers Clearinghouse gives away millions every January. 10 million. Oh my Lord. If you're one of AOL's 60 million customers, you've got more than mail today. Keep an eye on the staircases. They like to change. Catherine Borsnik is president of AOL programming, and she says releasing the new preview for the highly anticipated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is not only good for Megaportal, it's also good business for the movie. Not only can they preview the trailer, but they can present lots of other information. So the medium really lends itself to helping build the buzz against a particular movie. Welcome to your first flying lesson. Stick your right hand over the broom and say up. Up! Wow. Mr. Longbottom, Mr. Longbottom, Mr. Longbottom, exactly where do you think you're going? The studio wants to secure that buzz from now till its release in November. Wait, kid. Mr. Potter, our new celebrity. First years, you'd note that the dark forest is strictly forbidden, that no magic is to be used between the classes and the corridors. Patrificus totalus. This Friday, the preview will run in theaters with Steven Spielberg's long-awaited film, AI Artificial Intelligence, but today it's members only. I think that this promotion will exceed my expectations, but I would be very happy if we had five, six, seven million people looking at the Harry Potter trailer today. I think it is clear that we can expect great things from you. Well, you can see more of that preview for Harry Potter tomorrow on harrypotter.com. As for the film, well, you will have to wait. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone opens everywhere November the 16th. Pat. Last night, Madonna played to a sold-out crowd in Paris, and earlier this month, record crowds lined up for Nashville's fanfare. So why then are album sales lagging and some big bands playing to half-empty arenas? Attendance for most summer concerts are anything but red hot. Slow time summer in the city. Tonight's Inside Story. Stand back How can I tell you how much I love you I'm gonna give up my world I'm not gonna give up Beautiful things Yeah U2's Elevation Tour is a huge success, but Donna tickets are nearly impossible to get. Both the Dave Matthews Band and NSYNC are drawing near sell-out crowds to outdoor stadiums. But REO Speedwagon is having trouble selling tickets. Even the popular radio station concerts are in trouble. LA's 2-day Wango Tango concert featuring the Bee Gees was a major disappointment. The music industry is singing the blues. We haven't had the big blockbuster releases that have defined the last year. There hasn't been any record that's come and done five, six, seven million copies so far. Album sales are down 5 to 10% compared to the same period last year when several acts including NSYNC, Eminem and Britney Spears had huge releases. The decline in CD sales translates into fewer tickets sold at concert venues, which pulled in $364 million in the first six months of this year, down significantly from $510 million, this time last year. Spin magazine's Alan Light points out there's another reason ticket sales might be down. Ticket prices have gone up and up and up the last few years, driven by the economy. Take Janet Jackson's concert tickets, for example. Fans will pay as much as $125 when her All For You Tour opens in Vancouver next week, compared to a top ticket price of $75 for her Velvet Robe Tour three years ago. And then there's Madonna, tickets to her Drowned World Tour in Europe, cost a whopping 250 bucks. Good news regarding prices might be found in the resurgence of rock. $25 gets you in to see punk rockers Pennywise and they're selling out. The guys tell me it's a good deal. And they're selling out, the guys tell me they are being true to their name. How much wealthier do you think you guys would be if you had your ticket prices like other bands, you weren't so fan favorite, you know what I'm saying? People are really surprised all the time because we are really not a money oriented band and we've turned down a lot of money to do a lot of things that we thought weren't right for us and our fans wouldn't like. The resurgence of rock might spell some lower ticket prices, but promoters of the big ticket concerts have yet to do it. Despite all this, some artists are big enough to buck the trend. And even the Backstreet Boys are not immune from problems. They've moved their summer concert tour from outdoor stadiums to smaller indoor arenas. Well, coming up next in our moment, what did Catherine Zeta-Jones say to Dave that asked her blushing red? That's straight ahead. Missed NBC's must see TV comedy this year. Last night, Catherine Zeta-Jones sat down with David Letterman on the Late Show to promote America's Sweethearts. For a second, though, she forgot where she was and who she was talking to. That makes tonight's moment. And he has a son. Is that his oldest child? Yeah. He has a son who's 22. Yeah. And a daughter who is 10 months. Son. Son, 10 months. Yeah. What did I tell you? Son. Son. Ha ha. I will leave now. That's right. I will go. You want me to go? I'm so sorry. I feel like Farrah Fawcett right now. No, you're fine. You're fine. We all make mistakes. But as I was trying to point out. I am so sorry, David. God, I'll never work again. No, I think you're fine. Oop. What did you think about that, Bob? It was fine, Mary. Thank you. Catherine will be on with Jay July 19. And tomorrow, new interviews and new scenes from Brando De Niro and where Norton's the score. And it's a really good one, Bob. That's it, Farrah. Good night, everybody. Bye. So there you have it. Oh, that comes later. But you see what happens when you re-edit something. So on the next Access Hollywood, we speak to the guy who took Star Wars, The Phantom Menace, and re-edited it without permission. Oops. Hello us. George Lucas calling. So there you have it. Oh, we already made that point. Well, how about this point? Ah! We're sitting around watching Jurassic Park 3, and it's scary. Ah! But is it too scary for the kids? We'll let you know. Then that's Dr. Sweet. He's not real, of course, but he is. That's Phil Morris, and he's the first African-American in a Disney animated movie to star in and play a human. We've got Phil's story, and it's, well, sweet. So there you have it. Because our summer concert tour story went so long, we're out of time. Ah! So guess what? No rhyme. Good night, everybody. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.
