The stars were invited for charity events and photo ops. Little did they know they were standing next to a convicted killer. At times, I did fear for my life. A killer's obsession. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie. When I found out it was really true, I was saddened. And I think it's a terrible mistake. Now, after three months of marriage, Lisa Marie's family speaks out about the controversial pair. I know Elvis would never accept it. He wanted the very best for Lisa Marie. It's the final word from Graceland about Lisa Marie and Michael. I think that there will be problems. There was one king, and that was Elvis Presley. Exclusive, Lisa Marie's grandmother. For Tuesday, September 20th, 1994. This is Hard Copy. Hello and welcome. I'm Barry Nolan. Thanks for joining us. You won't believe what Lisa Marie's grandmother, Dee Presley, is saying about Lisa's marriage to Michael Jackson. That's coming up. But first, OJ and drugs. Doug Bruckner reports on the story that just won't go away. Doug? Barry, with the court proceedings on hold until tomorrow, OJ Simpson's defense team must now decide how to deal with two serious issues. OJ's admitted physical abuse of Nicole. And widespread allegations OJ also abused cocaine. It was well known that OJ did drugs. When you're in Hollywood, Hollywood's so small that you know who does drugs and who doesn't. OJ and drugs. The very idea that this wholesome American sports hero could have been involved with drugs like cocaine would have seemed preposterous not so long ago, but not anymore. He leaned over the blonde girl that I was with and leaned over to me and said, Race, Marcus said you might have some coke you want to sell. Race Newman is an admitted former cocaine dealer who wrote this book about the Hollywood drug scene. He says that OJ and pro football star Marcus Allen spotted him in an LA restaurant and that OJ quickly asked him if he had any coke for sale. At the time I didn't, which was rare, but I wish I could say I did because it was so millions of books, you know, but unfortunately I didn't sell OJ drugs because I didn't have any. Bill Fibbedo was a golfing buddy of OJ's and actually lived with the juice and partied with him and Paula Barbieri. He says that just a few weeks before the murders he and OJ went to this LA nightclub with friends. Someone had mentioned cocaine and OJ got a little goofy and said, you know, kind of like, yeah. And it took me by surprise and I looked up to him and I said, do you use cocaine? And he says, he told me yes. In recent weeks, reports of OJ's alleged drug use have surfaced in magazines as diverse as The Star and Newsweek. The Star reported that a former LA policeman attended cocaine parties at OJ's mansion. Newsweek wrote that Nicole believed OJ was a drug addict who suffered from wild mood swings. Newsweek also quoted two sources as saying OJ snorted cocaine at parties. The roots of these reports are found back here in Buffalo, the city of leafy neighborhoods and local taverns where photographs of OJ's record-breaking heroics hang on the walls and where after many years his autograph can still be found in the unlikeliest places. Buffalo was the scene of OJ's glory days on the gridiron, the 1970s, the very peak of his career and his popularity both on and off the field. OJ became a fixture in Buffalo's ritziest nightclubs, often arriving in stretch limousines with smoked windows, hamming it up for the cameras as he did while entering this Buffalo club with friends. OJ has always enjoyed the nightlife. In recent years he's appeared at scores of club openings and charity events. But back in Buffalo most of the action centered around this now closed-up nightclub Mulligan's, owned by Michael Militello, an old friend of the Juices. Militello recently admitted publicly that he used cocaine with OJ back in the 70s. Others who declined to be named also said they did coke with OJ. They spoke with hardcopy reporter Frank Grimes, who investigated the Juices years in Buffalo. Folks were pretty eager to talk to me off camera. In other words, well we'll tell you something but you can use it but don't tell anybody where you got it from. A lot of the stories about OJ's Buffalo days came straight from the back rooms of this now defunct nightclub. There's a black door with a little black button on it and the window people could look through to decide who gets in or not. People dressed up to go in there, the limousines pulled up, very much the opposite of the local ball and a beer joint that most of the football, Buffalo football fans would watch their games from. As one ex-cop put it to me, OJ had money and he hung around with people who had money. And in the 70s, late 70s, early 80s, if you had money and you were a celebrity and you were a bar goer, you were around cocaine. Former employees of Mulligan's reportedly held cocaine parties with OJ. Police sources quoted in this Buffalo news story said there were even two investigations into the Juices alleged drug use, but authorities never arrested the superstar. Buffalo investigative reporter Tony Farina thinks he knows why OJ was never charged. Why would a cop necessarily want to target the most prominent superstar in the area? If it fell into his lap, he would do his job. But I mean, did they go out of their way to look for cocaine use or drug use by superstar athletes? I don't think they did. It wasn't something that was out in the open. People weren't exchanging cocaine at the bar like you'd see in some places later on. It was kept quiet. And OJ's alleged drug use remained quiet until after his arrest on the murder charges. If reports of his cocaine use are true, the drug could well have fueled the rages that resulted in his physical abuse of Nicole. Coke might have even brought on a furious rage like the one which allegedly led OJ to commit those horrifying murders. OJ's back in court tomorrow and that's when his lawyers will try once again to convince the judge to throw out much of the evidence against the superstar. And we'll probably hear more about the latest disclosure that when police came looking for documents, OJ's secretary shredded the evidence. Barry? Thanks, Doug. Now, this is a question many of OJ's supporters keep asking. Is he being framed? OJ Simpson. He says he's innocent. But if he didn't kill his ex-wife and her friends, who did? I don't know about the gambling, but he owes somebody some money? From a triple execution in Florida to an unsolved murder in LA and the witness who refuses to talk. I'd rather be taken in custody and have my heart still beating than end up there. Now, Hard Copy investigates the Simpson conspiracy theory. OJ, the unsolved mysteries. Tomorrow on Hard Copy. Now coming up, a blueprint for finding celebrities like Roseanne and Tom Hanks. Little did they know it was written by a man with blood on his hands. I had the feeling that if and when he was ever let out, that there was a possibility this type of thing could happen again. A killer's obsession. That's next. And then, Lisa Marie's grandmother speaks out. And wait till you hear what she thinks of the Jackson-Presley marriage. Now, Weight Watchers offers a choice of weight loss plans. A famous Sonic burger, fries, and a medium co-classic right now just $2.49. Qualitatively spanky. It's awesome. It is a frightening tale of obsession. One fan who surrounded himself with his favorite celebrities. He posed for pictures with them. He invited them to charity events. But little did they know that they were standing next to a convicted killer. Jodie Baskerville has the disturbing story. Barry R.W. McMurray admitted brutally stabbing an innocent young woman to death more than 15 years ago. An insanity plea got him sent to a mental hospital. That's where he began a long obsession with Hollywood and celebrities. If I was the celebrity, I would be concerned. R.W. McMurray loved celebrities. He often invited them to his hometown for charity events. He even wrote a book on how to track down your favorite star. What's so incredibly disturbing is that the author began his obsession while locked up in a mental institution for murder. This crime was so vicious that to me he should have been put away forever. I don't believe that you can stab somebody 80 some odd times and never be talked back into being a sane person. But McMurray eventually got out and he made a hobby out of hobnobbing with the stars. Little did they know they were standing next to a killer. At times I did fear for my life because there's so many people, there's so many ill people. It was a murder that jolted the sleepy town of Joplin, Missouri back in 1977. 20-year-old Barbara McNeely was brutally attacked in the parking lot of the North Park Mall. As I recall, there was approximately 80 stab wounds to her body. There was a large amount of disbelief in this community because we don't normally have murders that occur like that or with such viciousness. R.W. McMurray was charged with first-degree murder but was proven not guilty by reason of insanity. He was sent away to the Fulton State Hospital. And what he did there may make some stars crazy. Seems while locked up, Mr. McMurray developed an obsession for celebrities. He began this enormous fascination with celebrities which started with collecting celebrity autographs and that sort of thing and progressed to compiling lists of addresses and phone numbers of his favorite celebrities. Seven years later, a legal technicality had the celebrity fanatic out on the streets. And that's when the killer began to really focus on the stars. He started inviting celebrities like Victoria Jackson and Billy Ray Cyrus to his charity benefits. We would like to raise a lot more money. Our goal right now is $10,000. He published books on how to meet celebrities. He turned his hobby into a full-fledged business. The bizarre thing here is that in this age of celebrity stalkers, here's somebody that is facilitating the potential stalkers by giving not only addresses but in some cases home phone numbers and contacts for you to get in touch with your favorite celebrity. Lonnie O'Grady from 8 Is Enough Fame is one of the hundreds listed in his book called Reaching For Your Star, but she was unaware of his criminal past. It's like at any time, you know, if somebody chooses to get a hold of me, here I am. But since his release, RW seems to have kept on the straight and narrow. Hardcopy tried to talk to McMurray about his rehabilitation. Well, under a little better circumstances, we might be able to do that. I'd like to hear your side of the story. Okay. So where would you like to meet? We can't do it here. McMurray never showed for the interview, but others were not so camera shy. At the time he was committed to the Department of Mental Health, I had the feeling that if and when he was ever let out, that there was a possibility this type of thing could happen again. Many fear that even if McMurray is rehabilitated, his book is a guide for others who may not have the star's best interests at heart. It goes with the territory of being a celebrity and you either hide out for the rest of your life in fear and terror, or you just go day to day hoping that nothing happens and watching your back and being careful, being real careful. RW McMurray continues to work with celebrities and has raised thousands of dollars for worthwhile causes. His next charity event is scheduled for next month. Barry? Thanks, Jody. If you think you were surprised by their marriage, wait till you hear from Lisa Marie's own grandmother. Dee Presley has just come forward with the first reaction from Graceland. Diane Diamond reports. Barry, no one was more surprised by the wedding of Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley than Lisa Marie's family. But despite their concerns, the Presley family has stayed quiet until now. I refused to believe it. And then when I found out it was really true, I was saddened because I, I didn't like it. When Michael Jackson took Lisa Marie Presley as his bride this summer, everyone was shocked by the unlikely union. But perhaps none was more stunned than the Presley clan. And now for the very first time, Lisa Marie's grandmother discloses just how outraged her family really is. I won't accept it. I can never accept it, but not meaning that I don't love Lisa Marie, but this is a pretty hard thing to accept. Dee Presley was Elvis's stepmother. The woman, Vernon Presley married after Elvis's mother passed away. Dee was about as close to Lisa Marie as a grandmother could get. Vernon and Elvis and I were the first ones of course that walked in to the nursery to see Lisa Marie. And I said, little girl, this is your daddy. And the look on Elvis's face was, oh, it was wonderful. She was just his pride and joy and Elvis's little princess. But despite the fond childhood memories, Dee Presley says she watched Elvis's little princess grow into a troubled young woman. Elvis died when Lisa Marie was just nine years old, and Dee says she watched Lisa struggle under the relentless spotlight that goes along with being the daughter of an American legend. Lisa had had some problems. She became very, I think, confused. And I feel like that she really herself really needed someone to be strong and to help her. Lisa Marie married rock and roller Danny Kehoe at a young age, and when that marriage failed, Dee says she was disappointed. But nothing could prepare the Presleys for the news of Lisa Marie's surprise nuptials to the King of Pop. I know Elvis would never accept it. Doesn't mean that he would discontinue to love his daughter because she was the greatest love of his life, but it would be most difficult for him to accept this. He wanted the very best for Lisa Marie, and he would be very troubled. Troubled by Michael Jackson's questionable past, including allegations of child molestation, allegations that still haunt the pop star and now haunt his new bride as well. The fact of the charges that have been brought against Michael Jackson, it leads one to wonder, is it true? But it's certainly not good for a happy life and for Lisa's children or for Lisa. And just think, nobody thought this would last. And Dee Presley wasn't impressed with that announcement either. My God, it hasn't been very long. I mean, you know, come on, Michael. That remains to be seen whether it will last. Dee Presley's first concern is for the welfare of Lisa Marie and her children. But she also worries about how this unusual union will impact the future of the Presley dynasty. I'd like to say to Michael that there was one king, and that was Elvis Presley. Yet with all her outrage over her granddaughter's new husband, Dee Presley says she still wishes Lisa Marie nothing but the best. You can't turn back, it's done. But if this is what you want, and it's really love, Lisa, my prayers are with you. And there is a new development in those child molestation allegations against Michael Jackson. The district attorneys from both L.A. and Santa Barbara met secretly yesterday with the lawyer for Michael Jackson's young accuser. Now sources say it was a last-ditch appeal to get that boy to testify against the king of pop. Hard Copy has learned that without the boy's testimony, no charges will be filed. Expect a formal announcement on this in the next few days. Barry? Thanks, Diane. Now, your thoughts on the new Miss America. When we come back, stay with us. Take a deep breath. Count to 10.
