They found that the lizards start each step with a quick foot slap and powerful downward stroke on the water.
An air pocket briefly forms on top of the foot.
The lizard has just enough time to pull its foot out of the water before the air pocket closes.
Researchers say a human foot would have to hit the water traveling at about 70 miles an hour to run on water.
