In today's top stories, Denver Police investigators say they've arrested four former Denver school bus drivers for possession of cocaine in the past year. 430 bus drivers served the school district, some were part time. Denver Police have been investigating the drivers undercover for a couple of months, but their cover was blown. At this point they're hoping other drivers that may know something about drug use come forward with the information. School Superintendent, Eddie Dennis, says the district is considering a new drug policy that could possibly call for random testing of pre-employment drug tests. One of the more enthusiastic Easter egg hunts today took place at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center. Dozens of youngsters competed for eggs and chocolate bunnies. The scene was repeated countless times across the country as the magic day approaches. In the past few years there's been a huge increase in the number of people who really try to eat healthy. People exercise more these days. A lot of folks have cut down on fattening foods, but sometimes the healthy choice is the hardest choice. Susan McMullen reports. Whether we're driving through the fast food lane, eating in a restaurant, or shopping at the grocery store, we've all become more conscious about the food we pick out and what's in it. But let's admit it, temptation often gets the best of us. When you're used to eating all the other cakes and pies and then the fatty fried chicken and all that, and I want to continue to do it, but I know it's bad for my health, so hey, I'll do better. When I go to eat out, I eat everything. I don't have to cook, so I naturally just eat whatever I want. And even when we think we're making wise choices, we're often not. The labels may say low in oils or fat, but the numbers may add up otherwise. This nutrition seminar at the Women's Hospital in Greensboro, diet experts say the answer is to get back to the basic food groups and plan ahead. It won't happen overnight, but start now. Learn to make the changes, make gradual changes, and that's something you can't switch to the type of milk and have leaner meals. You have to do gradual steps, and it takes planning. It also takes a little learning, learning to tell the healthy from the hype and passing all that knowledge on to your loved ones. These days, nutritionists are talking less about willpower and more about skill power. They say as your skill in reading labels and choosing the right foods goes up, the fat in your diet will go down. Susan McMullen, Nine News. You are what they eat, as they say. Actually, that's a rather frightening thought for those of us who are junk food junkies and like hostess Twinkies and cupcakes and all the stuff we're not supposed to have. But in today's Nine Family Healthcast, an interesting story about what you eat and how it makes you feel. It can affect your moods, Warden. It's very interesting. If you're not sleeping or you're getting too much sleep, it may be because of your diet. What you ate for lunch today may have a lot to do with how you're feeling right now. Some nutritionists say that people feel and act differently after eating certain foods. If you feel like you need a nap after eating a cheeseburger with fries or you actually fall asleep after drinking a warm glass of milk, you're experiencing a mood change. Calcium is a sedative element. They use it to relax muscles and to relax the nervous system. Milk is also higher in fat, and fat has a calming effect. According to Wilson, other foods that calm your moods are dairy products, carbohydrates, beans, seeds, nuts, and even turkey. You shouldn't eliminate those foods. If you do, you could become hyper or angry. A better idea is to have a banana instead of coffee. Bananas contain potassium, a natural stimulant. The dangers of cocaine abuse are by now well known. The drug can cause heart attacks. In today's Focus Report, the same appears to be true for another substance of abuse. Crystal methamphetamine, or speed. It's an illegal drug known for its long high and now heart attacks. Doctors report a 41-year-old man with no history of heart problems came to an emergency room 90 minutes after inhaling crystal meth. He complained of severe chest pain, and his electrocardiogram revealed evidence of a heart attack that was in the midst. Blood was flowing in an artery that supplied his heart, but it suddenly stopped. It is completely blocked from a blood clot. Doctors used a clot-dissolving drug to limit the damage and a balloon to flatten hard fatty deposits called plaque and open the artery. Completely open and blood and dyes actually flowing all the way down to the end of the artery. The cardiologist who treated the man believes methamphetamines increased heart function and led to the heart attack. We believe that acute changes in heart rate or blood pressure, or the force with which the heart contracts, may actually cause disruption of the surface of the plaque. Other doctors think speed may create a spasm in the artery similar to the well-publicized effects of cocaine. Drug treatment specialists fear people have heard a lot about the dangers of cocaine and have forgotten the speed kills message of the 60s. One should shift into realizing that the risk is the same, in my opinion, with the amphetamine type drugs. And what about the man who had the heart attack? He recovered, but doctors say had he not received help so soon, he could have suffered massive heart damage. The high from crystal meth is very addictive, some drug experts are expecting an increase in the use of that drug and the effects could be fatal. A new device for underwater jogging, aqua jogger, is a lightweight flotation belt that allows a person to stay afloat while performing underwater exercises. The water provides muscle strengthening resistance and protects the joints from impact. It has been beneficial to victims of joint and back injuries as well as heart patients. Aqua jogger will be available in stores this summer. Bizarre mystery is just coming to light. Rare but true, some victims of sudden head injuries or stroke developed foreign accents. One of the 15 known cases occurred during World War II. An Austrian woman was hit by German shrapnel. Ironically, after her recovery, her Austrian accent changed to German. The accent lasted for the rest of her life. The cause of this phenomenon is unknown, but all cases involved a shock to the brain. Most patients can overcome those accents with speech therapy. Coming up tomorrow in our 9 Family HealthCast, your prescription pills may become toxic if you eat the wrong foods. We'll talk to a doctor about that tomorrow. Tom Green is joining us here this evening. What are you going to have for us? Well, we're going to talk about Sugar Ray Leonard. Montell Williams delivers his inspirational message live from South High School at 10 a.m. and again at 7 p.m. April 8th on Channel 9. In the final moments of the Kansas game, I had to wonder when I was watching this afternoon, even though these are very experienced players and they've come all through the process, they've got to have a lot of jitters today. Especially, it's interesting, in the Kansas-North Carolina game, the most experienced players are having some of the toughest times, I think because they realize this could be the end of the line. And for North Carolina, it looks like it is. Rick Fox, the forward, their team leader most of the year, a miserable day from the floor. And it looks like Carolina is going to be upset by the Kansas Jayhawks. Final four underway in Indianapolis, the action going on. Game one wrapping up right now, the Kansas Jayhawks leading North Carolina. Then of course, the nightcap tonight has Duke taking on Vegas, Kansas holding to a seven point lead about a minute to go in game one at the Hoosier Dome. That'll be followed by Duke and Vegas. Meanwhile, the women's final four in New Orleans, Stanford, the defending champions, a tough time inbounding the ball. Jody Adams says thank you very much for Tennessee. It was Adams again with a shot clock winding down. She pitches it in off the glass. Tennessee downs the defending national champion, Stanford Cardinals, 68 to 60. They will face Virginia for the women's national championship. Virginia beat Connecticut, 61 to 55. In the NBA, the Sacramento Kings took the upper hand in the race for the most ping pong balls at the NBA's draft lottery. They lost their 31st straight road game here in Denver last night to the Nuggets. Michael Adams had 37 in a 140-122 Denver win. The Nuggets are in San Antonio tonight taking on the Spurs. One day game in the NBA today and it was the Orlando Magic pulling out all the stops trying to end the 13 game winning streak of the Houston Rockets at the Orlando Arena. Good game for Scott Scales, 25 points, one of his 14 assists there to Jeff Turner. And then the lights went out while Houston had the ball. Orlando definitely pulling out all the stops on the home court. Otis Thorpe was so stunned the next time he got the basketball he said, I'm going to wing it as far as I can to no one in particular. The Rockets staggered today as they lose in Orlando, 114 to 82 ending their streak. Well more bad news for Roy Tarpley and the Dallas Mavericks. Last night the power forward was pulled over by Dallas police and was charged with DWI. Tarpley has already violated the NBA's anti-abuse policy twice, once in 87, once in 1989. This could very well be the third strike against Tarpley which would result in a permanent ban from the league. It was observed by an on duty police officer committing a traffic violation. He, the traffic violation was doing 63 miles an hour and 35 miles an hour zone on Greenville. He also was observed drinking and driving. He was arrested on the scene and when he was stopped he was administered field sobriety test and placed under arrest for DWI. Similar problems for Sugar Ray Leonard. At a news conference today he admitted to having drug and alcohol problems in the early 1980s. The story broke when his wife testified that Leonard had used drugs. This was during their divorce trial she made these statements. At a news conference today in Washington Leonard confirmed that he battled these problems. The five time world champion and Olympic gold medalist was very emotional in talking about his problems. I've always been one that was rather stubborn and I did things that I wanted to do no matter who said so. So I resorted to drugs and alcohol. So occasionally I did cocaine. Occasionally I would drink heavy. And I forgot about my problem, my dilemma. It was okay for a while for that day to explain further the detriment of what I indulged in for those three years. With the field marriage. Private embarrassment to my mother and father. And hopefully not irreparable damage to my kids. Tough times for Sugar Ray Leonard right now. Well a big announcement out of the CU football program. Not a shocker but some tough news for Bill McCartney as Charles Johnson officially announced he would not be returning to play football this year. Johnson was the backup this year behind Darien Hagan but was superb every time he was called upon. In Missouri he scored that famous fifth down touchdown to beat the Tigers. At the Orange Bowl he scored Colorado's only touchdown in their 10-9 win over Notre Dame. He will leave the team this year to concentrate on his education as a fifth year senior. Colorado's quarterback situation is up in the air going into 1991. Darien Hagan is out of spring drills trying to rehabilitate his left knee. Well in golf it was another wild day at the Players Championship at the TPC of Sawgrass. The wind was not a factor. Still we saw some interesting shots on number 16 Tom Watson. For Eagle, five footer goes in a 65. He's at nine under par but Billy Andre knows you can't go right on 16. You go into the water if you go to the right. So you hit it left but then it hits a tree. Goes by the pin and goes into the water. We were avoiding all along. Then on 14 one of the best shots of the day. Fuzzy Zeller off the uphill line. You know it's going to be a high shot but Fuzzy can't find it. Wait. Wait. Wait. There's a ball about a foot from the hole. Birdie put him at 11 under par. Paul Aizinger is the leader on 15. The birdie putt would put him at 12 under par. He shot a 69 today. He has the lead but the shot of the day. You thought you saw them all. Brian Claire on 17. The putt, bring it on back. Hole in one. Thanks very much. Eight under par. Brian Clark. Meanwhile the women, the Dinah Shore at Rancho Mirage. Amy Alcott is all over here off the fringe on 14. The birdie, she shot a 4 under 68 today. Another bird on 16. She is at 11 under par and she has a 7 shot lead with 18 holes to go over 4 golfers. In tennis, the U.S. took a 2 to 1 lead over Mexico in Davis Cup first round action being played in Mexico City. The doubles team of Jim Pugh and Rick Leach needed 5 sets to beat Jorge Lozano and Leonard Levalle. The reverse singles matches tomorrow will determine who advances in the Davis Cup. Well in the race towards expansion the city of Miami is going to try and take a giant step this weekend. They've sold 67,000 tickets for an exhibition game at Joe Robbie Stadium tonight between the Yankees and Orioles. Same two teams will also play tomorrow before about 50,000 at Joe Robbie. The New York Mets tried to get some good news today. They put Frank Viola back on the mound. They say his elbow needs some surgery. He says I can pitch past it. Seven shutout innings. The Mets beat Montreal 5-0. Frankie V had 5 Ks. In Clearwater, St. Louis beat the Phillies 10-1. The big hit, a base is loaded double for Rich Gedman. The former Boston catcher picked up three RBI on the play as he's trying to make the Cardinal roster. Couple NHL scores today. The season wraps up tomorrow. Philly went into Pittsburgh, skated out with a tie and the Rangers lost at Detroit 6-5. With five weeks to go before the Kentucky Derby, the top three-year-olds in the country are trying to establish themselves as contenders in the run for the roses. One of the better prep races, the Jim Beamstakes, was run at Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky today. As they came to the last turn, three of the favorites side by side. But Apollo on the inside was fading while Hansel on the outside was charging on the way home. Hansel pulled away from Richmond to win the 1991 Jim Beamstakes, two seconds off the track and stakes record. And he claims himself as one to watch at Churchill Downs. And one NFL note today, Mike Tomczak, Plan B free agent, left the Bears, signed with the Green Bay Packers, and most of the Bears fans I know are pretty excited about it. Uh-oh. Yeah, they're kind of mean-spirited about Mike Tomczak. Hey, getting back to the bus for just a minute. I mean, we had Charlie Johnson on our show not too many weeks ago. Do you think he was being coy with us or that he honestly had not made up his mind yet about the bus? I think he really wanted to take as much time as possible and make a decision based on what he thought was going to happen. And I think with spring ball approaching, that deadline finally came. He had to say yes or no to Bill McCartney. And today he said, no, I'm not going to play football, but he's got a lot of the good things going on in his life. So football was not paramount anymore maybe at this time anyway. Yeah, politics might be a future interest. That's one thing he's already looking into. Okay, thanks a lot, Tom. Sure. Ten years ago today, John Hinckley Jr. tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. Reagan had just given a speech in Washington when Hinckley opened fire with a handgun. Secret Service agents shoved the President into his limousine, but not before he was shot. Reagan's press secretary, James Brady, was also shot. He was seriously injured and suffered brain damage. Hinckley was later found guilty by reason of insanity and is still confined to a mental institution in Washington. Today, James Brady and his wife were campaigning for tougher handgun laws. Arturo Barrios of Mexico broke the one hour run record. He covered over 13 miles in one hour. Sylvia. My goodness. People in Italy are a little concerned about one of their famous landmarks. It seems that the Leaning Tower of Pisa is doing even more of what it's known for. Leaning experts say that in the last month, the tower leaned as much as it should in a whole year. No need to worry about that. In a whole year, no need to worry about running out to see it. However, at the rate that it's tilting, you'll still have another 100 years or so to see that tower before it falls over. All right. Each night before the ABC World News tonight starts, the network runs an eight second bit of tape that's called Leader. Now, you never see Leader on the air if we're lucky, but here's what it looks like on our monitors at the station. It gives our engineers the time cues they need to put the show on the air at just the right time. From ABC News... And that's the way it's supposed to work. So last night, KUSA and every other ABC station across the country were startled when the ABC engineers in New York sent down a new leader to cue our weekend newscasts, and it looked like this. Instead of a countdown, we had disappearing tulips and an Easter surprise. And I guess that means happy Easter, everybody. I think we need to have too much free time. Too much free time at ABC in New York. Thanks for joining us. We'll see you at 10. This has been 9 News from Colorado's 24-hour news source.
