The following news program is closed captioned. Welcome to Northwest Nightcast. A final update on the day's top stories. A judge has ruled where a teenager will stand trial for the murders of his younger sister and her best friend. Witnesses have begun testifying in the trial of a man accused of killing for the insurance payoff. And the search for clues in Crosser. With news for the great woman that drinks up. Good evening. Thanks for staying up. I'm Kevin Schaub. A judge in Walla Walla says he believes he can't find an impartial jury to hear the murder case of Daniel Batorne. But tonight, the boy's attorney says he's going to appeal the ruling. He's accused of murdering his younger sister and another girl. Television, newspaper and radio have all been covering this case very closely. And Batorne's attorney says that's why the trial should be moved to Western Washington. He says in King County there is a much larger likelihood of finding jurors who haven't been inundated with the gruesome details of the murders. In those murders, prosecutors say Batorne killed his sister and her best friend by suffocating them with plastic bags. The trial is scheduled to begin in three weeks. Batorne, who's been tried, being tried as an adult, could spend more than 50 years in prison if convicted. Testimony will resume in the morning in a bizarre murder trial in the Tri-Cities. Dale Norwick is accused of killing his brother-in-law for the insurance money. It's a complicated case, one that goes back more than 14 years. Katie Eldridge reports. Defense and prosecuting attorneys set the stage today for what is expected to be one of the lengthiest and most complicated trials to hit Bedden County. Jurors received advice from the presiding judge about the importance of ignoring outside information about the highly publicized case. We emphasize the importance of your being able as judges to hear this case impartially, hear it and decide it impartially. And implicit in that is the necessity of your deciding this case based just on the evidence that will come in in the course of this trial. In opening arguments, the prosecution displayed a timeline beginning in 1981, the year Dale Norwick allegedly sold life insurance to his brother-in-law. According to the prosecution, Norwick sold the life insurance to Bill Jewell and then killed him. Jewell's body was found at the bottom of a cliff near Benton City in 1982. Norwick collected thousands of dollars in insurance money after Jewell died. Prosecutors will also try to prove that Norwick collected insurance money on a racehorse and from false burglaries. And the defendant told Phil King, yet once I had this racehorse and I took out a lot of life insurance, a lot of insurance on that racehorse. And then I killed the racehorse in such a manner to make it look like an accident. Norwick has two defense attorneys. Bob Thompson is handling the burglary and conspiracy charges. And Dan Arnold is defending Norwick on the first degree murder charge. The prosecution's key witness is Kathy Lee Harris. Harris says Norwick planned to set her up with another man and buy him life insurance and then kill that man and collect the money. Thompson says Harris suffers from delusional erotomania and was so in love with Norwick she would do anything to be close to him. Katie Eldridge, Northwest Nightcast. Shaped up to be a long trial. Prosecutors say they expect it will take about two weeks to present their evidence. The only survivor of a terrible crash on Highway 12 remains in critical condition tonight. The state patrol says 25-year-old Rafael Lopez was driving the truck that crossed the highway yesterday morning and hit another car head on. Two people in the other car were killed. 41-year-old Jack Trevett and his 15-year-old son Jeff lived in Moscow, Idaho. Investigators have ruled out arson as a cause to the fire at a food processing plant in Prosser. Investigators are back at the scene today, but absent from the site were the nearly 400 people who work at the plant. Danakalli reports. Despite the fire, today workers at the Twin Cities processing plant are doing their jobs while fire investigators and insurance adjusters are doing theirs. Nothing's definite. Investigators say welders were working about 2 o'clock Saturday when the fire broke out, but they don't know yet if a welder's spark is the cause. What they do know is that the fire started in this west end of the metal warehouse. Built back in the 50s, this Twin Cities processing plant is one of the oldest in the Northwest. The inside was sprayed with polyurethane insulation. It's highly flammable, and this was done back whenever this building was built, I think back in the 60s, okay, so that was allowable back then. It makes a real good insulation, but when it's exposed to open flame, it really takes off. Considering this highly flammable insulation, the firefighters are pleased that they contained it to the warehouse, keeping those licking flames from igniting the processing plant. And it's all wood, and they've got a lot of cooking oil, I mean, big tanks of cooking oil in it. So if it had gotten into that place, we'd probably still be fighting fire. Instead, the managers are facing mounds of massive mess. These potatoes were intended to become french fries. Now they're not even edible by animals. The managers had hoped to salvage some of these potatoes and sell them for cattle feed. But at this point, the building and its contents, all 25,000 tons of potatoes, are lost. No one has said yet just how much those potatoes were worth. A showdown has begun in the O.J. Simpson trial. Police Detective Mark Fuhrman and famed defense attorney Effley Bailey. You'll hear some of the testimony later tonight. Also, we'll show you a woman in eastern Washington that is truly an inspiration. Right now, Elizabeth Gardner is standing by in the weather center with the outlook for the week. Well, it's a rainy night in many parts of our viewing area. We'll talk about when all this rain is going to end in just a few minutes. But first, here are our current conditions. I demand a lot more out of my trucks than most women. With her 92 Chevy S-Series pick-up, Michelle Becker never met a mud puddle she didn't like. But she traded it anyway for the redesigned Chevy S-Series. As soon as I drove it, I wanted it. I'm like, I've got to have this truck. The Chevy S-Series. With more horsepower and more cab space than Toyota, it also has a driver's airbag standard. They made a great truck even better. We'll top of the morning to you. Bob O'Clem here for Ace Home Furnitions. You know, March is the month of leprechauns, and I've never seen a leprechaun in my whole life. But I know they exist because they've been here at Ace Home Furnitions marking down all the prices, don't you know? And during March, you got zero down and six months to pay. That's because the leprechauns. The leprechauns have been coming through and doing all these weird things all throughout the store. And although I say I've never seen a leprechaun, I know that they exist because they're here at Ace Home Furnitions. I love camping, solitude, fresh air. The big breakfasts like bacon and eggs with buttermilk pancakes. Crispy hash browns and toasts. Biscuit with country gravy. How about sausage eggs and french toast? Or maybe a Belgian waffle? I can almost taste it now. Choose any of JB's five fast-break breakfasts. Still just $1.98. Breakfast was waking up for JB's. Is this a great campsite or what? We had rain showers in Walla Walla and the Tri-Cities and many other areas, parts of our viewing area tonight. It looks like this rain is going to stick with us at least through tomorrow. It looks like we'll begin clearing on Wednesday. But look at that band of moisture that's out in the Pacific. This is sort of the kind of scene we've seen here now for really the last week. Just a broad band of moisture out in the Pacific. And as we put it into motion, you can see it just continues to stream along and really build up a lot of energy out here. There is a low pressure system that's spinning up to the north. Really, it's about to enter British Columbia now at this point. So that's not going to bother us. But as you can see back down to the south of it, lots of moisture here. It's really beginning to hit our area now. It crossed over the border of Oregon probably a couple of hours ago. And now we've got scattered showers here and there. This is going to stay with us really for the next day or so. It looks like by Wednesday we will begin to clear out a little bit. And that'll be nice. It'll be good to see some sunshine after the weekend. It was a nice weekend though. So it'll be nice to see conditions like that again. As you can see, tomorrow afternoon the cold front begins to move really all the way, halfway through Washington State and the low pressure system associated with it. And then by the time we get to Wednesday morning it pushes off into Idaho and the low pressure begins to move off to the north. So we could see some sunshine peeking through by Wednesday morning. But around Walla Walla in the blues do expect some showers in the morning. And then we do look to see some afternoon clearing, which will be good to see. Here are our low temperatures for tonight. Possibly we'll see some snow showers in the Cascades, but otherwise 39 in Yakima and Ellensburg and 45 for the Tri-Cities. And your high temperatures tomorrow for Pendleton 58, Walla Walla 57, the Tri-Cities 57. As well Pascoe is actually the hot spot today at 66 degrees, but we don't look to get that warm for tomorrow. Yakima and Ellensburg also at 56. Here's your forecast for tonight. Yakima you expect, plan to see some showers and mostly cloudy skies, a low of 40 degrees, winds out of the southwest to 25 miles per hour. For tomorrow, more scattered showers and a high of 56 with light winds. Ellensburg, cloudy with showers, 56 for the high temperature with southwest winds to 10 miles per hour. The Tri-Cities, mostly cloudy, scattered showers, 46 for your low tonight, southwest winds to 10 miles per hour. Continue into tomorrow, 56 degrees for your high winds out of the southwest to 10 miles per hour. Walla Walla and Pendleton, you should both expect showers as well. But it gets even better. The best thing California needs right now is another Pacific storm, but that's what it's getting. Thousands of people away from their homes. Forecasters say there's going to be a chance for more rain through most of the week, particularly in the next day or two. Lisa Salters with the latest. On the heels of a five day storm that dumped more than a foot of rain on the California coast, Northern California residents are bracing themselves for more of the same. Flood warnings and watches are still in effect in regions along the already soggy Napa River, where two to four more inches of rain are expected to fall in the next 24 hours. Portions of the once flooded highways leading in and out of the Monterey Peninsula have partially reopened, though the going is very slow. It's absolutely ridiculous. I mean, everybody's trying to be as courtesy as possible because everybody knows everybody's the same predicament. But we've been here for two hours and it doesn't look like it's getting any better anytime soon. We've got an extra day out of this actually. No big problem. We just want to go home. We just want to go home so it's worth the traffic. The series of powerful Pacific storms that has devastated the coastline from end to end has been called California's most widespread storm this century, causing 12 deaths and two billion dollars in damage. President Clinton has declared 39 counties, more than half the state, a disaster area. In Fresno County, rescue workers spent the weekend searching the rain, searching the rain swollen waters beneath this collapsed bridge that sent several cars plunging into the river. Once the waters receded, the ill-fated cars and their passengers could be seen peeking through the mud. Grieving relatives could only wait by the riverside as workers pried open the car doors to recover the bodies inside. And in San Jose, residents continue to salvage what they can after the storms that sent mud and rain pouring through this community. For many Californians, the storms have destroyed everything they had, all this in a state already trying to recover from earthquakes, landslides, and wildfires. Lisa Salters, ABC News, Los Angeles. And you can expect those rains to hit home in the northwest in the produce sections. Growers in California are expecting huge losses. One grower predicts that half of the area's spring lettuce crop is washed away now at a cost of more than 500 million dollars. Still ahead tonight, today's testimony in the O.J. Simpson trial. And the Health Department has changed the housing rules for migrant workers in eastern Washington. Seventeen years ago, I got into the business of grooving cement floors and dairy barns. It wasn't a surprise, but it was a no-show today for Martin Pang. He's the man accused of torching the Seattle warehouse where four firefighters were killed. Pang was scheduled to be arraigned on the murder charges this morning. But of course authorities didn't expect him. Pang has been a fugitive since the fire back in January. However, Pang has been in contact through a videotape. Over the weekend, a Seattle TV station aired a tape from Pang saying he's innocent and had nothing to do with the warehouse fire. Pang says he was only joking about setting the fire, but said he had nothing to gain. Prosecutors, however, say Pang may have benefited from his parents' insurance settlement. Jeff Stone, formerly known as Jeff Galuli, is a free man tonight. After seven months in an Oregon boot camp type of prison, Tanya Harding's ex-husband says he is now going to do his best to blend into society. He changed his name to Stone last week. The Washington State Board of Health has reversed a long-time ban on tents for seasonal workers. This means farmers will soon be able to provide some type of military-style tents. But just what will be required in those tents still hasn't been decided. Mike Gempeler of the Washington Grower League says it's a step in the right direction. But he says he's not sure it'll work. I just don't think it's going to result in many new beds, so to speak, for migrant workers this year and maybe not in subsequent years because the Wisha tent, if you will, the tent that meets all of the U.S. Department of Labor and State Department of Labor regulations, is a pretty sophisticated animal. Right now, the rules require that tents must be equipped with electrical outlets and cement or wooden floors. The bloody glove has made its first appearance in the O.J. In the morning, Defense Attorney Hefley Bailey will continue questioning Police Detective Mark Fuhrman at the O.J. Simpson trial. Bailey today didn't waste any time getting to the subject of Fuhrman's actions at the Simpson estate. Jerry Giordano with today's testimony. Defense Attorney Hefley Bailey cut right to the chase as he asked Detective Mark Fuhrman point blank if he tampered with evidence to frame O.J. Simpson. Did you wipe a glove in the Bronco, Detective Fuhrman? No. You did not? No. Bailey also grilled Fuhrman about exactly what he did after arriving at the Simpson estate in the hours following the grisly double murders. And once again, the line of questioning went right back to the infamous bloody glove. The glove Fuhrman says he found behind the Simpson guest house. If that glove had been there when you say you found it, it would have been placed there by someone involved in the homicide. I would assume that, yes. That would be a vicious killer of some sort, would it not? Yes. And you hung around for 15 minutes with no backup and no vest doing something. And no matter how many times he was asked, Fuhrman would not budge, saying he never met a woman by the name of Kathleen Bell. I do not recognize this woman as anybody I have ever met. Kathleen Bell is the woman whom defense attorneys maintain will testify that she and Fuhrman did meet, and that he made racist remarks while the two were at a Marine recruiting station. And while Fuhrman may not remember her, she remembers him. I am wondering how many of those kind of conversations he gets into and why he wouldn't remember such a conversation. That was pretty incredible. And defense attorneys say Bell can back it up with the testimony of so-called mystery witness Andrea Terry, whom Fuhrman also denied knowing. Fuhrman remained calm and in control at the hands of this trial master, but legal experts say Bailey may just be laying the groundwork for a more explosive day in court on Tuesday. I am looking forward to the conclusion of it, and it wouldn't really be proper to critique any lawyer's cross-examination in the middle of it. I think there is still some fireworks left to come. And in a late-development controversial defense witness, Marianne Gurches has now been dropped from the defense witness list. She is the woman who claims to have seen four strange men fleeing the murder scene the night of the murders, and also the woman recently arrested on felony fraud charges. In Los Angeles, Jerry Jordano reporting for ABC News. Jeff is coming up with sports, and well, the Americans are kind of doing their thing, aren't they? In fact, the playoffs are going to start next week, the new season ends this week, so why don't we do this? There's not going to be any high school basketball in this show. Tournaments are over, we're going to do something different, I think. Up next for you in sports, a huge honor for the Americans, Top Gun today. The guy who has led the Ams for the past two seasons and is at the top of a lot of scouts draft lists was named today the Western Hockey League's Player of the Year in the Western Division. Lankow, who is eligible for the National Hockey League draft this summer, is the leading scorer in the league. 67 goals, 66 assists, and 69 games this season. He's been the key to the Ams resurgence this season as they head into the playoffs. DL-11 has gotten a lot of awards in his career, so I asked him where this one ranks for him. It probably ranks right up there. I think this year is a big turnaround with new players and staff. I've got to give a lot of credit to Bob and Pat for turning this team around. Now the guys who have been around Damon Lankow all year agree, Damon deserves the honor. He's been a pleasure to coach, sir. I think he's been a pleasure for the other players to play with. And I think that Damon is a very deserving winner in our division. And I honestly believe that being on a fourth place team leading the league in scoring, that he deserves to be the overall winner in the entire Western Hockey League. It kind of lightened up my day a little bit. Well, a lot actually. A lot actually. Marty Murray of Brandon was named the Eastern Division Player of the Year. The final voting for Player of the Year in the entire Western Hockey League will be done this week. The winner will be announced next Tuesday. A lot of people think Lankow has a chance to play in the National Hockey League next season as a 19-year-old rookie. Maybe. But right now the hot rookie in the league is a goaltender who's taken away time from a former American, Oli Kolzig. He plays for the Washington Capitals. His name is Jim Carey. He doesn't look for lost animals. The goalie mask keeps his face expressions a mystery. Sure can't stop the puck, and he got a lot of help today. The National Hockey League is the only team that's going to be able to snap a score here. That is Dwight Cote making it two up in caps. The first career shut off for this guy named Jim Carey who was 6-0 and one in his short stay in the National Hockey League. The Capitals beat the Lightning by scoring 3-0. Sonics and Blazers both had the night off in the NBA, so tonight we check in with the defending champs, Houston Rockets in Atlanta tonight, and it was the Rockets who were looking to snap a season-high four-game losing streak. 31 points, 11 rebounds for the dream, Mookie Balalock from the corner, bang, 25 points for the Hawks. But Mario Eli comes back, a three to keep Houston ahead, and the Rockets go on to snap their losing streak, 97-86. Tomorrow night in the Coliseum, the finale of the I-82 series for this season. First place Sun Kings in the Tri-Cities to play the Chinook. Yakima still looking for their first ever win in the Tri-Cities. They may have Guard Eldridge or Casner back. His 10-day contract with the Denver Nuggets is up, and we've been hearing rumblings he might not be offered another one. We'll have more on that tomorrow at 5-30. Meanwhile, any Chinook fans counting on the return of former Tri-City forward Kenny Payne for the stretch run? Forget it. Payne, who is playing in Japan, has renewed his contract overseas for a whole bunch of cash. He won't be back with the Chinook. He wouldn't have been eligible for the playoffs anyway, but he's been offered a whole lot of yen, a chauffeur in the works to continue to play hoop in the land of the rising sun. Opening day is creeping up on us as both the Yakima Bears and Tri-City posse are getting ready to open minor league season within a couple of months. Bears, of course, will stock their roster with Los Angeles Dodger prospects. While the posse hasn't filled their roster yet, we have an idea today what the new ballpark will look like. This is a computer rendition of the new park at Pasco. It's under construction, complete with a Tri-Cities sunset. It looks a lot like Yakima County Stadium. Doesn't it? Just more of a modern look. The ballpark will be ready for opening day in May. While the baseball strike continues, the Mariner front office was busy today, re-signing players who were not playing because of a labor dispute. They renewed the contracts of 28-29 players who were on strike. The one guy they let go first baseman designated hit a Reggie Jefferson. Then they signed nine more replacement players to temporary contracts. Now, if you felt bad for the replacements, don't. They received a 5,000 Ka-ching signing bonus. They'll get another five grand if they start the regular season. They're paid $625 a day. And if the strike ends, they'll each be paid $20,000 in sevens play. Now, if you could pitch or hit, there's a quick way to make some fast cash. Limited in simpler terms, okay? If you signed today, you played through, say, April 10th, then you'd make a cool $47,500. Now, you don't even have to be all that good either. It doesn't look like the Sub-Mariners are down at Peoria. The Sub-M's won for just the third time this spring, beating San Diego 2-1 in 10 innings today. The Sub-Mariner record improves to 3-6 on the spring. But hey, who cares, right? They'll be making like 47,000 Ka-ching each. Let's go on to the Andre Agassi-Pete Sampras rivalry, because it's become a pretty good one on the tennis court. Today, just a few days after gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated, Agassi got tangled up with Sampras in the finals of the Champions Cup at Indian Wells. You try and stop that. Nobody can. Andre couldn't. How about a 122-mile-an-hour serve off the racket of Pete Sampras? That's the way it was all night. The speeding bullet going by Andre Agassi. Sampras wins in straight sets tonight. You might be able to understand if Andre's head wasn't in this match tonight. Tomorrow, my father is going in for open-heart surgery, and I just want to tell you that I love you, Dad, and I'll see you there tomorrow, okay? And right after that, he said that, I don't know why we came out so quickly, he said he would get back, he promised his dad he would get back at Pete Sampras. One other note, former Kamiakin star Tony Shoemaker, 25 points tonight to pace Northwest Nazarene. They will play in the championship game, the national championship game, for NAIA Division II basketball teams, as we're talking college basketball. Yeah, okay. So we got some college basketball in there. March Madness. Okay, exactly. Let's take a break, and when we come back, we'll show you a woman that truly will motivate you. If you're looking for an excuse not to exercise, don't turn to Ann Kendall. Now, if you're looking for inspiration, that's another story. And Michael Limerick has it. If she could only see herself dance. Sight is about the only limit 62-year-old Ann Kendall has in her aerobics class. Blind for nearly 50 years, Ann spends two mornings a week dancing herself into shape at the Kennewick Senior Center. Okay, good job. Sometimes I get to listening to the music and don't pay attention to what I'm doing and it makes you out of line. Somebody gives me a little pull or a little push or tells me to step to the right or the left and I get back in line. So I exercise and have a lot of fun doing it. Instructor Beth Trost pays extra attention to her talented student, giving her verbal commands to help her stay in sync with the rest of the class. Beth kind of tells her how she's doing and how she's standing with the relationship with the rest of the class. If she's too far forward or back, she can't judge that. If she's dancing, she naturally moves one way or the other. So sometimes we move her back and she doesn't mind. She just keeps going. Good Ann, keep going. Ann joined the class four months ago. Beth admits she was a little apprehensive about her new student at first. But before long, Ann was marching, doing the Charleston and twisting with the best of them. She also rides horses. She hikes. That's unbelievable. Yeah. Jeff is going home and taking some Ricola or something. I may be on Nightline next. See you tomorrow. Good night.
