And the top story, weeknights at 5.30 with Dave Edel and Dana Cowley on Cap 35, where the news comes first. It's a shocker. We just wanted to announce we're getting married, that's all. When Christine's fiancé turns out to be Mr. Excitement. Got all the charisma of a three-bean salad. And Harry turns into Mr. Blue. I pity the slob who's still carrying a torch for her. Can he stop this mismatch? Are you in some kind of pain, woman? Or is it too late? Dearly beloved, find out on the next night course. Happy family was shattered when this husband killed his wife. The first time in 20 years, his stepdaughters confront him. He played God when he took her life. Let's see him play God and bring her back. I still love him. We don't want your love. That's fine. I used to care for this man. What do you want to say to them? I'm sorry? Apology not accepted. Until tomorrow's over. What did you want to say? What did you want to say? Yes. Well, I would just like to say any man that has a lot of money can do anything to a woman after divorce, particularly. You don't have a prayer. I'm an ex-lawyer's wife, and I know, about $80,000 in legal bills and nothing to show for it at this point. I'll be in the appellate court next week. Well, the question becomes, what point does anger lead to rage? Here to shed some light on how to stop rage from turning into violence is the author of Passions, How to Manage Despair and Fear and Rage and Guilt and Heighten Your Capacity for Joy and Love and Hope and Awe. Welcome, Dr. Georgia Wittgen. We need a little while here. There is some raging going on here. It sounds very much like the Betty Broderick case, actually. It does very much indeed. And it's interesting to me because it seems that naturally everybody sides with the ex-wife thinking that, oh, she was the one who was automatically done wrong. I don't, you know, know who's telling the truth, but that seems to be the natural assumption, which is not always the truth. No, and sometimes the truth isn't nobody's right. The problem is in these situations, generally we're looking for a culprit. We're looking for a winner and the people involved are looking to win rather than to be heard. And sometimes what happens is all the energy goes away from the specifics of it instead of figuring out what you really want. Eleven years of raging means somebody needs to get on with their life. Does it not mean that you need to get on with your life? And is not the question what is best for the children? What is really, truthfully best for the children, Georgia? You're absolutely right. You're one of the best therapists in the country. Thanks. Rage. Rage doesn't continue on its own. Here's something that you might not know about rage. It passes very quickly. The body can't produce that much adrenaline for that long. So to have rage for 11 years means you've got to feed it and feed it and feed it. And the body's real stupid, Oprah. It can feel rage on its own. The rage has to come from the brain. You have to first be seeing everything in a very personal way. Instead of seeing things as information about the other person, he's a fool or she's a fool, you've got to be constantly saying, oh, this must be about me. Someone's making a fool out of me, me, me. If you really want to get rid of your rage, you've got to start with the brain. You've got to start looking out instead of at yourself all the time. Well, so Elizabeth. But Elizabeth, would you you admit that you are in a rage? Um, I, I. This is beyond anger. Well, I'll give you an example. You know, they stopped my child support and that makes me angry. Uh huh. I don't. My life is not engulfed in this like Dawn. Dawn is obsessed. What is she obsessed with? She's not going to be happy until I'm dead. What is she? She. She fears you. I am I am happy in my life. I don't live the lavish lifestyle that they live. Uh huh. She. And are you angry about that? Are you angry about that? No, no, I'm very happy. You're happy about them living their life, really? Yes. Honestly, that's why I sent my son over there to to have a happy life. Uh huh. And she kept her doing her thing. Well, OK, let me just say we're trying to get this. Could you just admit, Dr. Woodkin, you can help me here. Could you just admit that you are very, very angry? Oh, sure. After what has happened to my children. Yes. OK. And what continues to happen to my children. Based on these papers, I don't know who's telling the truth, but based upon these papers, you're the one who's doing damage to your children. No, but those papers aren't true. And there are eight other doctors who probably, if I had had time, would have been here to testify on my behalf, like they did in court. So why? The judge kept throwing them off the case. Why? Because they disagreed with his with his with his court appointed doctor, who was his best friend. They did favors for each other back and forth. Court favors. OK. Huh? What are you saying? What are you saying? How can you how can you prove the allegations that that he set this all up? First of all, you say the man urinating on his kids. That's hard to believe. You know, that's pretty low. He doesn't look like that kind of a gentleman. OK. He's a con artist. I don't know. I do not know. OK. First, that's a good question. What does that kind look like? Right. Yeah. Well, first of all, I mean, a millionaire, he's he's an educated man. I mean, the people that do stuff like that is going to be, you know, a holy. Excuse me. Holy jeans and no tennis shoes is wrong. Let me let me. Again, Oprah. Not I would like to respond. Not go ahead. Yes, I would like to respond. First of all, we are not millionaires. That's number one. Number two. But we're not millionaires. Number two. Her dad is and her dad has paid for her legal fees. And at the fine, that's one final hearing that we had. She had two attorneys and an ex judge sitting at her table. She had over 10 experts come to court. I had to say, because his attorney kept taking depositions every single day. He was trying to up the cost of the thing. I had no choice. I would lose my children if I didn't do that. I had to borrow money from my father. My father is out sixty thousand dollars. Here's what concerns me about the whole thing. I'm not too worried about any of these people. Why? Because the anger is giving her armor, perhaps. It's acting as an antidepressant. You know, and they do, though. I mean, because you know what? I mean, I say this reminds me of Betty Broderick. Yeah. Dan and Linda Broderick also feared Betty Broderick, but felt helpless to do anything about it. So what can I mean? They can decide to ignore whatever it is they perceive her to be doing. That doesn't necessarily do anything. So what can they do? You say everybody has to take responsibility. What can they do and what can she do? Yeah. And the real word that you use that's key is that word control. Every time you lose a sense of control or a sense of choice or the ability to predict what's coming next, that's when the fear and the adrenaline come up. And both women are in that position right now. Probably the reality is not the Broderick reality or they wouldn't be here today having this kind of dialogue. My biggest concern is with the children. The biggest concern. And here's why. But, Don, Don just shook her head. Don, you just shook your head when she said the reality is that it is not Betty Broderick. What do you want to say about that? Well, the similarities are frightening, you know, with all of the telephone calls and everything else. And they didn't believe they were going to die either, but they're dead. You know, they thought they took some precautions, but they're dead. Do you actually fear, physically fear her? Now that I live so far away, I feel a little more comfortable. They fear their 50 court cases more than they have going on in the court system right now. Now, I would like to respond to one thing. I've been accused again today of child abuse. And that's, you know, that's where a lot of this stuff started. And I'm continuing to be. And you talk about anger and you talk about frustration. You talk about frustration and not knowing what's coming. I have a little baby daughter. Less than a week after my daughter was born, Elizabeth called on the telephone and said to my husband, and I was on the other line, that she was going to make false reports to the HRS, the Children's Protective Services, and continue to do it until they took my daughter away. This is untrue. She's already made the false accusations. She's already made the false accusations that I abused. She called the HRS for my children. That I abused her older son. And they came to my house and said something's wrong with her. That testified that I was not even anywhere around when this alleged abuse took place. And to this day, insist that I bought off my professor, that I bought off my sister. Everybody, all my witnesses that made that court, that judge and the HRS, realized I never abused that child. She'll still say that it happened. She'll tell this audience that it happened. I am not a child abuser. We'll be back. A right comes up next. Who says her husband's ex-wife is only after the money. We'll hear from the wife and the ex-wife in the return. Touchstone Pictures presents the one summer movie that has no vulgar language. Stuff is terrible. It tastes like... No unnecessary violence. Tan mania is growing, and so is the number of skin cancer cases. This week during Cap35 News at 5.30 and 11, Christy Kovac reports in a three-part series on skin cancer, Scourge of the 90s. We'll take a look at tanning beds. We'll investigate skin cancer, what to look for, how do they get rid of it, and what it means in your life. Skin cancer, Scourge of the 90s, a three-part series tonight at 5.30 and 11 on Cap35, where the news comes first. You know, in most states it is a crime to make a false allegation of child abuse, so I don't know what state you all are from, so you can press charges against that if it's, if it's, you have. And then what happens to the kids? Yes, you're right. We have been, before the HRS, there have been a number of HRS calls against us, and the HRS has expunged their files on any allegations and cleared us of any allegations that she's made. That is absolutely correct. Okay. When does this end then? If they're going to, because she says it's not true, and they have the documents to back it up that it is true. Dr. Wickens? I have documents too. I'm going to say something that's, I think, going to be very unpopular to a lot of people right now. I think there's a point where you've got to say to yourself, life isn't always fair, and you cut your losses, and you move on, and it doesn't matter. You do. You know, and that's the interesting thing about the Betty Broderick case. I felt, you know, a lot of women in this country thought Betty Broderick was a hero because she killed Dan and Linda. I think that if you're going to look at Betty Broderick as an example, the example should be, not because she became so rage that she went out and committed murder, that's no example for anybody, but she should be using an example for women to say, I will never become so involved and lose my power to the extent that I feel like I've got to kill somebody to validate myself. I mean, that is the lesson. But everybody missed the lesson. Everybody missed, I think a lot of people missed that lesson and thought, you know, she should fight as long as she has to fight. Remember the days where we were all taught non-assertiveness training? Yeah. We thought we were out of control if we felt any anger. I agree with you. To be possessed by your passions is just as much out of control, and it's going to plummet your self-esteem just as much as if you hit it. But what if, and there are many cases across this country, I hear it every day, and this woman has shared it with me, and there's not a show that I do, when after the show I shake hands with the audience, somebody doesn't say, why don't you do something about women trying to get child support payments from their husbands? Yeah. Okay, so I think there are a lot of women in this country who have a reason to be enraged because they have husbands who won't take care of their children. That's right. And for the children's sake, here's what you do. You take your rage and you channel it as much as you can into the system. Start changing the system. And I know it's hard. I'm not being a Pollyanna. Number two, then you focus on your children, not on fighting that ex. Because you know what happens when you're enraged? Your children see it and they learn that's appropriate. They soon become desensitized. You become a model. It's not good for the children. Yeah. Because can't you all see nothing's being accomplished for the children? You can see that. Let me back up for one minute. He uses the children to hurt me. That's the syndrome of a man who batters the wife. I totally agree. He constantly has to control it. I totally agree with the doctor. How did he get the children if you say he was, was that your question? You gave him the kids. You said at first you had them, then you gave them to him. I know. I allowed my son to go over to Utah to live for a couple of months because he was separated from his brother. He wanted to be with his brother. They've had a very close relationship. They are very close. Right now he's so depressed he has anxiety attacks and he's in the hospital because he's not with his brother and he can't live with this woman. She is constantly hurting him. She's obsessed. Let me just mention something. These people are obsessed with making my life miserable. Cut it. They will not, they will not stop. Cutting your losses, cutting your losses is important. You're making your own life miserable. That's correct. They brought him here today. No, she's not because your story is so much like mine, but the difference between my story and yours, I'm up against the state, the whole entire state because my case went through three different counties for no reason and my children was taken away from me for no reason. I have the proof. What you need to do is like I did. When you said that they was recording you, it is true. I found the tapes where my husband was recording me. When I found the proof that I have to prove that what he did to me was wrong, no one would touch my case. No one wants to listen to me because number one, they say you're a poor woman with no money. Who's going to listen to you? What you do is you stick. So your children were taken for no reason. 70% of mothers lose custody in contested court custody cases. 70% read Mothers on Trial, that book. Okay, when we come back, we're going to talk to a wife and ex-wife. We'll be back to talk to them. Munchums? Yep, munchums are crackers that are baked till they crunch like chips. Baked, not fried? Oh, Keebler, how exciting. We think so. Keebler munchums, crackers that crunch like chips. They are here. We've been doing this for 11 years. Oh, the children. They know it. Somebody asked the question over there, what happens when your children watch the show. The children weren't allowed to speak in court. And we'll know that one of you is lying. She wanted to bring them into court. I did. They had a right. They had a right to say where they wanted to live. They spoke to a guardian. They were silent. They had their own attorney. They were isolated. They had their own attorney. Only for a short period of time. They had a court-appointed psychiatrist. And he said keep the children with the mother. Psychiatrists. Georgia? Yes? Those kids are going to be so messed up, it's insane. They are. They already are. They already are. We've never initiated one court action, and in the last four months, we've been to court twice on emergency hearings. What you're seeing is a really dramatic illustration. Go ahead, Dr. Wickett. Go ahead. You're seeing a really dramatic illustration of the fact that when there's rage, you've got a delayed psychological divorce. There's no divorce here yet. You're absolutely right. Someone's in rage. They're involved. They're involved. They're involved. Well, my next guest writes this. And we had the police call on us in Utah. In Utah. Long distance, she called the police. They called us for no reason. My son was trying to get him committed because my son was reporting abuse. What do you want to say? I've known Elizabeth for three years. I'm a divorced father myself, and I've always looked at it from the man's point of view, but if the kids were given the choice, they would go with Elizabeth in a minute. That's not true. That's not true. It is true. That's not true. I have never seen a mother that was as attentive as she was to her children. I mean, to the point of going to all the games with them, taking them everywhere they had to go, and both of those kids would go with her. She kept one. The travesty here is you're splitting up two boys who were raised together for ten years. So where did that judge's findings come from? They made that up? The judge's findings are totally irrevocably false. It is done through a corrupt court system. Elizabeth has spent a lot of her own money trying to defend herself, and it is totally corrupt. And if these kids... Who are you to say it's corrupt, though? I mean, what is your relationship? I have seen the relationship of the kids, the parents. If they were given a choice over it, they would go with Liz. That's not true. There's no question about it. I'm a totally objective viewer here. Yes, and I think it's time, even if it's not fair to split up the children, take the deal for the sake of the children. There's always a loss in any deal. Take the deal and get on with your son and live your life. My son is in the hospital. He's depressed because he's separated from his brother. And the father recently visited him in the hospital, and the son is so angry because the father cannot admit to the things that he has done and is doing currently. Let me read this, let me read this, because this is not going to be resolved here. My next guest writes, I know that there must be others out there, believe me, there are, who are dealing with an ex-wife. The real travesty is the children. She tells the children lies about us will stop at nothing to hurt Chris. That is my husband and myself. And unfortunately, she is hurting the children, too. All she is really after is the money. This letter was written by Shelley, the new, much younger wife, and Shelley is here today, and so is Kathy. Kathy is the ex-wife. Shelley says you're tormenting her and your ex-husband. Is that true? That is not true. I did go back to court to get an increase in child support. But if he pays his child support, what's the problem? I don't write them, I don't call them, I don't even live in the same town they do. Is that all that is, is child support? No. Yeah. Right after the divorce was filed, she accused Chris of being an alcoholic and a drug abuser. And his talk screen came back dirty. Reported him to the medical society and the medical association. Chris had to undergo random drug testing and sampling for a year. Because he's a doctor? He could have lost his license and ruined his career. It didn't stop there. I have a letter here that was sent to every one of Chris's patients. Every business in the city that we live, every referring doctor that refers. The letter saying what? The letter says, I am Catherine, the wife of, my husband is in charge of anesthesia at the pain clinic at this hospital. My husband is a drug and narcotics addict for many years. I did my best to help him, but he would not change. He has access to all the narcotics and drugs at the pain clinic and what he administer during anesthesia. I do feel sorry for the hundreds of patients who suffered so he can satisfy his needs. My life has been miserable because of his addiction. The hospital and his employees know about it, but nobody dares to do something about it. Did she not also in that letter say that he put water in the IVs instead of? Well, that's what she was talking about. He substituted pain shots with sterile water shots so he could satisfy his needs. Those are some pretty strong allegations. I'll let you respond to them when we come back. I'll let you speak. Thank you. In the real world, we all want a lot for a little. Plus, new movies for TV with Stephanie Symbolist, Barbara Hershey, Robert Conrad, Cybill Shepherd, and Mara Fawcett. More than ever, ABC's got... More than make it go... Hmm. Chalet just read us a letter. Kathy, did you write that letter? No, I did not write that letter. I found out about it the same way that Chris and Shelley did. People started calling me up and saying, is this true? And I didn't even know anything about it. Finally, my obstetrician called me and said, would you like to see a copy of it? I said, well, yeah. So I went down to his office and he gave me a copy. So you don't know how that letter got written? I honestly do not. If you know me, if you've seen that letter and read that letter, it's full of misspellings and poor English. If I had written that letter, I would have at least gotten the grammar right. Okay. Okay, if you didn't write the letter, do you know who could have written the letter? Who might have written the letter? I... I can't say that I know. I have an idea who wrote the letter, but I do not know for sure who wrote the other one. Uh-huh. So... And people ask me why I'm not married. Okay. Unbelievable. So you have not harassed them in any way? You have not? Only as the same... I asked for child support. Only for child support. Yes, but it's taken us four years to settle on child support. Five, and it's not settled yet. I mean, it's never going to end. Really, really good. So I think this is interesting because perhaps maybe I think everybody believes... Now, certainly we all know everybody is not telling the truth, but perhaps it is that everybody believes they are telling the truth. Could that be true, Dr. Witkin? Yeah, we're also seeing, I think, a really big male-female difference. When men are enraged, they're generally physical. You don't see women jumping out of cars and beating each other up because of traffic accidents the way men do. And we don't get into brawls and bars. So what do we do? We are more likely to write letters on the phone, so when we hear the stories, they are easy to believe. This is our action. Okay, this woman had an interesting question, I thought, and it was... I'd like to know what happened in your divorce agreement. You say he has a lot of money. Did you not get a good settlement or something? Yes. Well, no, we divided the property. I found out later when we were in the process of selling the house. This is how devious he is. One in the same amount that I got, and another in the excess amount. And the guy was smart enough to show me the other check, too. Apparently he was trying to get him not to show me the other check. But that's what a con artist is. And I got $50 a week for each child. I was divorced when my youngest child was eight months old. How can you get $50 a week if he's a millionaire? Because... He was making, at that time, he was making $150,000 a year. And he said, if you want the children, you agree to it this way. And I said, okay. All I want is my children. And that's how that happened. Okay, hell has no fury like a woman's scorn, and who knows a man's weak points better than the wife he left behind. We'll be back in a moment to talk to Paul. For over 30 years, our family has been part of Yakima. Our family invites your family to our family practice. You say the same thing, Dr. Wickham. They only want child support. You believe that? It's easier to go away angry than to just go away. And you know, we have this myth that letting it all hang out is good for you and, you know, go fight for what you can't get. Only up to a point. After a while that fighting is just rehearsal for the next fight and the next fight and you're real practiced at it. It's a lot better to take that energy and go do it yourself. What do you want from her, Shelley, if anything? I want what's best for the children and what is best for the children is for Chris and Kathy to stay out of court. I mean, you know, I've done a lot of research on what kind of damage this does to children mentally. I mean, to have parents who are in constant conflict. I mean, the children are going to have to pick sides. I agree with Shelley. And I wish it were that way. And in fact, I did come and talk to Chris and Shelley when I first found out that Aubrey was in trouble and needed special help that she couldn't get through the public school system. And one of the things that brought that out is Aubrey had stolen Shelley's ring. And it was big stone. And I brought it back to them and said, look, Chris, the girl needs help. Will you please help me? Help me to get her some help. And he said, no. He said he wouldn't help his own child? I will not help the child. And I said, why? I said, what makes you think you have a choice? You have a responsibility here. He said, the divorce decree. And I said, OK, then, son, we'll change that. Which gave her another excuse to sue us. I mean, he did not say that he would not help her. Yes, he did. But Kathy's idea of helping Aubrey was to take her out of a public school which the public school she was in is supposed to be the very best public school for children with Aubrey's problems. If it's the best public school, then how come my daughter that doesn't have a problem and took her achievement test is a straight A student, has never given anyone any trouble, is below the national average in two out of the three areas? The parents cannot keep the child? It has everything to do with it. It has nothing to do with that. I was just going to say that, make that same point. It takes two people to argue. Thank you. And if one of you would just let go of that anger, I don't care who it is, it will be much better all the way around. It sounds so simple, but that is what would happen. It only takes one to go to court. Exactly. One to go to court. So if you want to let go, how do you let go on an emergency basis every other day? Will you allow my child to see the therapist of his choice? You're blocking it. That's why I have to go to court. I think if to be accused of abusing your child, I know one of the tabloids did that to Roseanne Barr, did the same thing, called up and pretended to be a parent and waited outside her house because in some states you have to answer, it is the law that you have to respond to charges of child abuse, even if they are false. I think it's about the worst thing you can do to a person, if that is true, is to accuse them of abusing children because there are enough children being abused in this country so we don't have to make it up. My son is in the hospital right now reporting all the abuse. So you're saying she's a child abuser? You say she's a child abuser. They both have. Eight doctors said that they were abused by the father and the stepmother. I would hate that. They said I did not commit the abuse. We'll be right back. I've got to go.
