This is the KIMA Olympic News Update. And good evening. Thanks for joining us. An 18.5 million dollar bond issue could be on the ballot later this year in Yakima. The money would fund fire, park and street needs in the city. A citizens committee studied the issue for eight months before making recommendations to the city council. The Capital Improvement Committee is proposing five million for parks, nearly ten million to improve city streets, and nearly four million for fire department improvement. That's not an extraordinary amount of bond issue for having gone a period of years without those kinds of major voted initiatives. And they will probably take us out another four or five years. The fire bond issue would include money for a new west side fire station. Meantime, Yakima City Council may take another look at last year's decision to vacate a portion of A Street to allow for expansion of the Yakima Mall. A major unnamed retailer plans to open a store directly behind the mall in the spring of 1995. Mall officials say the store will employ 100 people with annual sales of ten million dollars. They made decisions without a whole lot of facts. I thought that the study on the traffic flow was inadequate. Before we built a store in the middle of a street that people use, I think it needs to be looked at more closely. I had a problem with the store wasn't identified and how do you really make decisions on impacts when you don't know. To start this whole battle over again is, in effect, a way of saying that we don't need the business downtown. Frankly, the taxpayers of Yakima will be poorly served if they lose a tax base like that. The mall must pay the entire cost of relocating utility lines on A Street, which is estimated at $170,000. Mall officials say negotiations are in their final stages with the owners of the new store. This week's heavy snowfall conjures up memories of similar weather events in the 1970s, which resulted in heavy flooding in the Yakima Valley. Although the main ingredient is with us, a near record snowfall in late winter, Yakima Chief Meteorologist Bud Graves doesn't foresee massive local flooding like the valley experienced in 1974 and 77. But Graves says temperatures in the 50s and 60s and heavy precipitation could raise havoc with the snowpack. I think it's a remote chance only. Actually, it's good news. We need this. The ground is very dry. It'll just kind of soak it up if we can get it to run off slowly. Like I say, the worst thing would be to have real warm temperatures or a warm rain. Otherwise, it looks great. The 1974 runoff inundated parts of West Valley and damaged lower valley roadways. And that wraps up our news break. Be sure to stay with KIMA for more Olympic coverage, and we'll be back with the rest of the day's local news following the Olympics. See you in about an hour.
