This is Live at Six. Good evening, I'm Al Diaz. Thank you for joining us on this weekend edition of Live at Six. A murder of a 76-year-old Yakawal woman is still being felt throughout the community. This week, Ethel Statler was murdered in her home, and that has some neighbors moving out. Today, the Medina family, who lived across the yard from 76-year-old Ethel Statler, moved out of their apartment. Despite the arrest of the suspect, Anthony Ply, they say that's not enough to keep them living on Pleasant Avenue in the same neighborhood. Well, after the suspect's been arrested, living here in the community feels kind of better. But you still have something inside that is holding back. You're afraid something like that's going to happen again. So that's the reason we're moving out right now at this moment. Anthony Ply is under investigation and is expected to be charged with first-degree aggravated murder. His first court appearance is set for tomorrow. Another community is alarmed this evening, this time after a recent jail escape. The Benton County Jail has seen its second escape within months. Many who live just a few miles away from the jail are now questioning their safety. Santaya Rose has more. The modular units at the Benton County Jail are coming under some community scrutiny after the second escape within months. Kennewick neighbors are wondering how safe their families are and why, for the second time, someone has jumped out a window, scaled two fences, and broke free from the minimum security compound. It's a little scary. You know, you want to be mostly around this time when you've got people here and families here. It's a little scary this time of year to knowing that we're not very secure on our own community. It was just after 8 Friday night when 21-year-old Jeffrey Kelly, dressed in black and white jail clothing, made a run for it. He has not been seen since, but his escape has nearby residents questioning security measures at the portable facilities. They aren't doing their job, apparently. Or maybe they've got too many people in there that really shouldn't be there where they could keep a handle on what's going on. Even though Kelly was being held on domestic violence charges and isn't a huge risk to society, neighbors aren't comfortable with his escape. Sounds like they've got a big problem that they need to take care of and put a handle on it. After September's escape, jail officials met to discuss ways to beef up security. They knew that heightened measures needed to be taken, but in the identical way the inmate fled before, so did Kelly, leaving many wondering what changes have been made. Sontaya Rose, News 25, NBC. Jeffrey Kelly is described as a white man who is 6 feet tall. He weighs about 230 pounds and has brown hair and green eyes. If you have any information or have seen Kelly, you are asked to call your local police. Family, friends, and community members are mourning the death of CELA City Councilman Robert Ward. The CELA Fire Department raised a flag at half-staff in honor of Ward, who died of a heart attack on Thursday. He served as CELA's councilman since 1984 and was recently elected in November. Ward was also a former president of Tree Top and also served in World War II. His son says the family have received an outpour of calls and support, and he knows that his father will be greatly missed in the community. About as fine a father as anybody could ask for. He had a tremendous ability to work with people, a wonderful sense of responsibility and civic pride. Robert Ward was 73 when he died. Some Yakima mall goers are making wishes come true for children who are sick. By purchasing holiday tins, the money goes towards the Wishing Star Foundation. The money is used to grant wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. So far the fundraising event has raised more than $300. The festive creations are on display in the lobby of the Red Lion Hotel. Throughout the past week, visitors have voted for their favorite houses, and tonight the winner will be announced. The only requirement is that the houses be constructed on a sturdy surface. The winner of the contest will receive a pizza party for all of their class friends. It's time now for your weekend weather forecast. Let's take a look at the temperatures right now in the Tri-Cities. The temperature is 43 degrees. Humidity is 76%. The winds right now are calm. And in Yakima, the temperature is also 43 degrees. Humidity at 61%. Wind three miles per hour out of the west. Here are some other regional temperatures for the area. Portland, 49 degrees. Olympia, 45. Seattle, 43. Bellingham, 42. On the other side of the Cascade. Wenatchee at 37 degrees. Spokane, 32 degrees. And Pullman, 36 degrees. Here is some of the cloud activity out there. As you can see, it's cleared up quite a bit since yesterday. However, if we look at our radar map, we can still see that there's some rain over Seattle and, of course, over eastern Idaho and Montana there. A big system going on. Now let's take a look at the temperatures for tonight. Here is what you can expect. The lows will be roughly about the mid-20s. Twenty-eight for the Tri-Cities, 31 for Yakima. Expect partly cloudy with patchy late night fog. For tomorrow, you can pretty much expect the same for Yakima and the Tri-Cities. Only one degree difference right there. Forty-five for Yakima and 44 for the Tri-Cities. That's for the highs, that is. And once again, partly cloudy with patchy late night fog. That's a look at your weekend weather. Stay with us because coming up, we'll have a look at today's debate between Al Gore and Bill Bradley. But first, here's a look at the past conditions. A six-day standoff at a Louisiana jail has ended. Officials allowed new crews inside to see the damage caused during the crisis. Prison officials provided a tour of the warden's office and other areas where the Cuban detainees were held. The warden and two guard hostages for six days. Today the warden talked about the treatment he received while he was captive. These guys that held me hostage in there, four out of the six had asked me to do things for them, which I did. Respect goes a long ways in the correctional setting. You treat a man as a man, not as, say, an inmate. And you do what I want you to do. You treat a man as a man and respect him. And that goes a long way. FBI and INS officials would not elaborate on the deal which ended the standoff, but the FBI said that the Cubans could be sent back, or there is some rumor that the Cubans will be sent back to their home country. A bomb threat forces Royal Dutch Airlines 747 to land earlier today. KLM Flight 644 landed at Boston's Logan Airport after authorities received two phone calls warning that the plane should be checked for a bomb. The plane carrying 266 passengers and 13 crew members landed in Boston at about 1 this morning and spent about five and a half hours on the ground before resuming flight. The FBI says two bomb threats were made by an anonymous male caller warning that the KLM plane scheduled to leave Kennedy Airport should be checked for a bomb. It was a face-to-face contentious debate between the two men vying for the Democratic nomination for president in the year 2000. Former Senator Bill Bradley and Vice President Al Gore clashed over health care and education on this morning's Meet the Press. Brooke Hart has more. Dominating their second debate in three days, a tangle by the Democratic candidates on the issue of campaign finance reform and a challenge from Vice President Al Gore. We could call this the Meet the Press agreement. Gore said if Bradley agreed, he'd drop all radio and TV ads until the nomination. That can get a lot of the money out of the presidential campaign and accomplish one of the best reforms. What about it? Sounds to me like you're having trouble raising money. No, as a matter of fact, I'm not. The challenge comes days after Bradley trumpeted his campaign finance reform commitment, appearing with a like-minded Republican on the issue in New Hampshire. But polls show Bradley is still less familiar to Americans than Gore is. Gore asked the former senator to give up the ads in the name of reform and debate him twice a week instead. Al, that's good. I like that hand. But the answer is no. Why should I agree now? I'm not someone who's interested in tactics, Al. In a later exchange, Gore admitted to this administration's own fundraising excesses. The point is, do you learn from mistakes? And I certainly have. Candidates also sparred on the subject of health insurance, both aiming for coverage for everyone, but Bradley proposes covering more people more quickly at a greater cost to taxpayers. As for Social Security, both candidates say they're against raising the retirement age, but neither candidate offered ideas about how to preserve the entitlement for future generations. In Washington, Brooke Hart, NBC News. After nine frustrating delays, NASA made one last attempt to launch Space Shuttle Discovery on a mission to rescue the Hubble Space Telescope. And it was a go. The shuttle took off just before 5 this evening. For weeks, NASA had said that Saturday would be the last chance to launch Discovery this year because of the impending new year and potential Y2K problems. But officials changed their mind Friday after falling Friday's night launch and said they would consider a launch on Sunday. Today's launch was the third shuttle mission so far this year. That, by the way, is NASA's worst shuttle flight rate in a decade. The man known to millions around the world simply as Q's, James Bond's personal gadget guru, has died in a car crash in England. British actor Desmond Llewellyn was coming home from a book signing when he was involved in a head-on collision. He was 85 years old. Llewellyn was best known for his role as Q, the man who equipped Bond with the latest high-tech spy tools. Whether it was a toxic fountain pen or a deadly umbrella, Q was always kept Bond one step ahead. Putting family finances in order is a top priority for many Americans, and the end of the year is one of the best times to do it. Parenting Magazine shows you how to take advantage of the money-saving opportunities right now. Financial specialists say one way to save money before the year ends is to make a charitable donation. Nancy Fitzgerald and her daughters Annie and Nell are sending this pile of used clothing to a local charity. Donate old toys and clothes to the Salvation Army or the local homeless shelter. You get a great tax break. You get cleaner closets, and you get the inner satisfaction of having done something good. In order to take a tax deduction, ask for a receipt, clearly stating the value of the items you're donating. If you don't know the value, claim the amount you estimate the items would sell for at a garage sale or thrift shop. Here's another way to save. If you take prescription medicine regularly, order a refill before January 1st. Chances are you've met your health plans deductible by now, so your insurer will pick up the full tab. If you've set up flexible spending accounts, now is the time to use up those funds. Flexible spending accounts let you pay for some household expenses with income that's never been taxed. The problem with those accounts is that any money you put into the account, if you don't use it by the end of the year, you lose it. Use up those flexible spending account funds by buying extra contact lenses, getting your family's teeth cleaned, or paying the January bill one month early. The Fitzgeralds plan to use up the money in their flexible spending account by purchasing extra glasses. Oh, I like those. Those are cute. For Parenting Magazine, I'm Rachel Hall. Well, Anthony Dice-Joseph joins us now. Anthony, you have your debut weather, I mean, debut sports coming up. I had a feeling I was going to do that. Anyways, what do you have coming up for us? With all these names, how can you go wrong? Apple Tree, just in time for Christmas. Good evening, sports fans. I'm Anthony Dice. Well, three weeks ago, the Seattle Seahawks seemed like a lock for the playoffs with an 8-2 record. Not so anymore. Today, the Hawks went into Mile High Stadium to take on the Denver Broncos and try to reclaim their lead in the AFC West. Could Seattle snap their dismal three-game losing streak? We pick this one up late in the fourth quarter. Brian Greci finds tight end. Dwayne Carswell for the 9-yard touchdown. It's 30-20 Denver with under two minutes to go. The Seahawks are done, right? Ha, wrong. John Kittena drops back and fires a 36-yard strike to Derrick Mays in the end zone, and the Hawks are back within three points. It's 30-27. The only hope now is for the onside kick. And can you believe it? Kerry Joseph recovers the kick, and Seattle is right back in business, needing a field goal to tie. Kicker Todd Peterson, who missed three field goals last week, comes through in the clutch from 45 yards out, and we're going to overtime tied at 30. But that's where the roof caved in for the Seahawks. Kittena gets drilled right here by Ray Crockett. Glenn Cadrez scoops it up and goes in for the game winner. The Broncos win 36-30, and the Seahawks have now lost four straight. Ouch, that really hurts. Perhaps the biggest surprise in the NFL this year has been the St. Louis Rams. Kurt Warner and company came in today's game with only two losses on the season and could clinch home field advantage for the playoffs with a win over the New York Giants today. And that's exactly what Rams fans are hoping Santa brings for their team. But Kurt Warner has been giving presents to his receivers all year long. Here he hits Oz Hakim with a two-yard touchdown pass. There was some debate, but it did stand as a touchdown, and that made it 10-0 St. Louis. But Hakim wasn't done yet. He takes a short pass from Warner. He's going to get a great downfield block from Isaac Bruce right here, and he's gone. It's a 65-yard touchdown. Man, is this offense tough. That made it 24-3, but the Rams defense can get it done too. Devin Bush picks off this Kerry Collins pass and will take it to Paydirt. The Rams clinch home field advantage, beating the Giants 31-10. Now, the Indianapolis Colts have been the NFL's other big surprise, but the Redskins had upset on their minds today. But Edrian James had other plans. Check out this great one-handed grab on the pass from Peyton Manning. That is some rookie. The Colts with the early lead. But Washington would battle back Redskins quarterback Brad Johnson. Drops back, goes deep looking for Albert Connell, and he has got him for the 48-yard score. The Skins took the lead, but it wouldn't last. Why, you ask? Too much Peyton Manning. He lost this beautiful pass in a triple coverage that somehow finds Ken Dillder for the 2-yard score. The Colts squeak out their 24-21 victory for their 10th win in a row. Now, here is one thing you should never do. In Cleveland today, a referee hit offensive tackle Orlando Brown in the eye with a penalty flag. So what does he do? He shoves the official to the ground. That is a big no-no. Brown was ejected and will face some big fines from the league. By the way, Jacksonville beat the Browns 24-14. We go now to some other scores from the NFL today. In the AFC West, San Diego lost to Miami. They fall to 6-8 for the season, while Oakland crushed Tampa Bay 45-0. That is the biggest loss in Tampa Bay team history. The Seattle Sonics have the night off tonight after thrashing the Vancouver Grizzlies yesterday, 1-12 to 89. Gary Peyton's 26 points moved him past Jack Sigma into second place on Seattle's all-time list. He trails only Sonic legend downtown, Freddie Brown. Now, one basketball team that was in action today was a 22nd-rank Gonzaga Bulldogs. They upended Montana, 88-70. Richie Fromm and Matt Santangelo led the Zags with 15 points apiece to claim their 13th home win in a row. We'll have your highlights at 11. Now, a local bowler entered some elite company this week. Don Marquardt, owner and operator of Goal Bowl Lanes in Pasco, was recently named to the Washington Men's Tri-City Bowling Association's Hall of Fame. Marquardt has tossed a perfect 300 game 18 times in his career and still bowls in professional tournaments around the region about twice a month. He says he was thrilled to receive this honor. Looking at the list this morning, there's only 20 other guys on our plaque of Hall of Fame members, so I'm one of 20 ever since this organization has come about. Total surprise to me last night, honor just from bowling accomplishments or how maybe I treated the people in the area. And in some other news and notes, Sarah Hughes and Michael Weiss dabbled the crowd at the Tri-City Coliseum last night helping the U.S. defeat the World In Figure Skating Challenge 10-8. That event will be aired on January 9th on ABC. And finally, NBA star Tom Gugliotta is at home for his 30th birthday after suffering a seizure in Portland on Friday night. Oh boy, shoving a ref, that's got to be really bad. I don't know what that guy was thinking at all. I know, but he's going to think twice before he throws that flag again. He's definitely going to have his pocketbook for that one, I'll tell you that. Thanks, Anthony. Well, coming up, we have some more, so stay with us, we'll be right back. We've been celebrating Christmas together for about 10 years. We kind of got our own little group thing going on. We usually get ideas from each other. A lot of times we spread out and sometimes we stay together and just go down aisle by aisle. Once we get the shopping done, then we have our wrapping party. Wrapping party. What is great at Christmas time, it's convenient, it's affordable, and you can find just about anything for anybody. It's just got to have it. It's a tradition. Every year it's the same thing. You can go anywhere and get filled up, but you can only get the new five-buck value roundup at Arby's. Santa and the Marines were giving out toys to kids at this train stop in Saratoga Springs, New York. The Marines are also helping Santa deliver toys to six local towns there. It's a little untraditional, but the children didn't mind that Santa took the train this year instead of the sleigh. We here at KNDU are doing our own part to help Santa out. What you see here is our collection for the Toys for Tots program. We'll be accepting new unwrapped toys until Wednesday, December 22nd. That's when our local Marines reserves will pick them up and distribute them to needy kids for Christmas. There's still time to donate, so come by 3312 West Kennewick Avenue, or you can also come to 1608 South 24th Street in Yakima to donate your toys for Toys for Kids. That's our show. Thanks for joining us. Have a nice evening. You can see us again tonight at 11.
