The Mariners opened a 10-game road trip tonight in Anaheim and the M's have to be thinking they're cursed. It's been pouring in Los Angeles and San Diego for three days. Why, oh why wasn't it raining between those two cities tonight in the Big A? After Seattle rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at three, the Angels took a 4-3 lead on this double play ball by Wally Joyner. Johnny Ray makes it 4-3. Halos. The M's had runners at second and third in the sixth but couldn't score. There was nobody out at that time. Then California exploded in their half of the sixth. Devon White stole second and third and then would score on this squeeze bunt by Bob Booth. Jim Presley kind of dives forward. He really didn't make an effort. The Angels added two more and led 7-3 after sixth. Presley tried to make them ends in the seventh with a solo shot to left making it 7-4. The M's pulled to within 7-5 but then California blew it open in the eighth with a four-run inning. Johnny Ray's two-run triple was the key shot. Ray went 4-4 on the night with six RBIs. He's leading California to an 11-6 rump over the Mariners. But still folks, things aren't as bad as they are for the Orioles. They extended their record for futility today, dropping their 15th straight out of the gate. Milwaukee used a six-run third inning to go on to a 7-1 victory. Bill Schroeder's two-run homer the big blow in that big inning. The 0 and 15 Birds will look for win number one tomorrow in Kansas City. In the leagues only other two games, the A's needed 13 innings to win in Chicago and Boston destroyed Detroit. In the National League, the Cardinals and Tony Pena cooled off the Red Hot Pirates tonight. Pittsburgh drops their first game of the season at home by a 9-3 final. Pena had two home runs in the game for the Red Birds. You know, it's a good thing that Baltimore's doing so badly or people might realize last year's World Series teams have a combined record of 8 and 19. In the rest of the senior circuit, the Astros shut out Atlanta for the second straight night. Cincinnati needed 12 to do in the Giants. The Cubs break a four-game losing skin in Montreal's five-game winning streak at the same time. And for the first time in Los Angeles Dodger history, they've had games rained out on three consecutive days. The NFL Seattle Seahawks have come to terms with holdout quarterback Kelly Stauffer. However, the former Colorado State QB can't sign until Seattle veteran strong safety Kenny Easley, who is part of the deal, passes a physical with the Phoenix Cardinals. Stouffer's agent says he expects to sign a contract with the Seahawks tomorrow morning. As for the NBA Sonics, they're off until Friday when they close out their regular season home schedule against Utah. Even so, there's a couple plays from the NBA tonight that we've got to show you. Philadelphia's Charles Barkley in white, the behind-the-back pass to Cliff Robinson right there, who gets the bucket despite the foul against New Jersey. Then it's Barkley getting hammered to the floor, but his shot still goes into the spectrum. However, that shot was nothing compared to the one Moses Malone for Washington made. He gets clobbered and makes the shot you only dream about playing horse in your backyard. Even so, Moses wasn't enough as the Bullets fall to Detroit. The Sixers just got by New Jersey. Boston seven better than the Bulls. And San Antonio wins in Houston. One other basketball note, Tulane University is returning to the college basketball scene. The Board of Administrators of the New Orleans School has voted to reinstate the hoop program that was suspended in April of 1985 in the wake of a point-shaving scandal. Closer to home, the Toppenish Wildcats hosted Wapato and Zilla today in a West Valley A-League double-dual track meet, starting with a boys' high jump Toppenish sophomore Mike Torres bettered his own mark with a leap of 6-3. That's only one inch off the Valley's best. Watch out for this kid in the coming years. The girls' long jump would go to Zilla's Nicole Devon. This, her third attempt, landed her at 15 feet, 4 inches. A super race in the girls' 100-meter dash. Watch the two lanes to the right of your screen. And lane two, Lisa Berghoff and...
