Stakes it back in his face and gets the slam dunk over Ralph Sampson. Take a look at this steal by Mo Cheeks and he waits just long enough for Charles Barkley to come roaring down the middle. It's Barkley. Now we're going to Boston. Yeah, that's Red Hourback in the garden in Boston watching Larry Bird with one of his magic passes to Dennis Johnson on the baseline. The ball didn't go in but it counted on the goal sending call. This is going to be Kevin McHale then dishing to Bird. The Boston Celtics are never flashy but they get the job done. Jay Vincent will be on the end of this Greg Kite pass and he puts it down with a little bit of flair as Boston goes on to cream the Dallas Mavericks 137 to 117. Other scores from around the NBA saw New Jersey beating Utah as Michael Ray Richardson and Buck Williams combined for 45 of those points. Other scores from the NBA, Boston over Dallas by 20 and it was Philadelphia over Houston 26 to 108, the Lakers squeak by Milwaukee and one final score from the West Coast, the L.A. Clippers beat Golden State 103 to 99. The All-State Team for football high school style was announced tonight and there was a big honor in the way for Kerry Conklin. Not only was he named quarterback, first string quarterback for the All-State Team, he was also named back of the year for the state. Here are Conklin's stats, 134 of 214, over 60 percent, over 2,000 yards on the season, and he gets the title of state back of the year. There were some other big nine All-Staters on the team. They included Jay Covington of Pasco, Jim Trout of Kennewick, and Darren Harvey of Walla Walla. By the way, state champ Juanita placed six starters on the All-State Team including Kurt Steck the running back who now holds the triple A record for career rushing from a high school in Washington. The Seattle Seahawks will play a rare Friday night game in the Kingdome against Denver. This had hoped to be a game that would get the Seahawks into the playoffs, but of course that's not to be. However, looking back at the season when they needed just one win, this might have been the one that turned it around for the Seahawks as they lost to Denver in overtime when Rich Cardas kicked this field goal. But Denver coach Dan Reeves is not taking the Seattle team lightly this time around. They really swarmed, they get after you, and they do a great job with turnovers. They're one of the teams that caused the most problems for teams with turnovers and that's something in the last two weeks that we've made an awful lot of mistakes and we've got to eliminate those to have a chance. The bookmakers say the Denver Broncos have a chance. They've installed the Broncos as one point favorites over Seattle on Friday night. The Broncos, by the way, not only need a win, but they need a loss by either the Jets or the New England Patriots to get into the playoffs. Jerry Faust was named today as the new coach of the University of Akron. Of course Faust fired just two weeks ago from Notre Dame. Faust met the press today in Akron. He said he was excited to be there. He grew up in the state of Ohio. He coached high school football there and he said he was happy to be back and looking to make a new start in college football. And speaking of honor roll teams, the NFC today announced their Pro Bowl selections. These are the players that will be playing in the postseason classic for the NFC. Sections of five floors of a building under construction in Los Angeles collapsed today killing at least three workers and injuring six others. Ambulances were rushed to the scene in the downtown section of Los Angeles near the Harbor Freeway. Construction was underway on what was eventually supposed to be a 22 story structure. Fire officials said a large slab of concrete on the fifth floor broke off and crashed to the basement, taking with it portions of the floors below. The 30 to 40 foot square slabs plunged through to the basement, trapping some of the workers beneath their weight. Space shuttle Columbia has been declared ready for launch tomorrow morning at Cape Canaveral, Florida, if the weather lets it go. Weather forecasters at the Kennedy Space Center predict a 20% chance of rain with a pretty solid cloud cover for most of the day. Shuttles do not launch in the rain ever and NASA does not like to launch in a completely cloud covered sky because it obscures the ground in case of an emergency landing. But despite those projections, the countdown is on and if it goes up, it will be Columbia's first mission in two years. The main objective of this flight is the deployment of an RCA television relay satellite. The five member crew is expected to return to the Cape on Christmas Eve. Surgeons at a Minneapolis hospital tonight began the first artificial heart implant in a woman. The Minneapolis Star and Tribune report in tomorrow's edition that the operation is being conducted at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. The 40 year old Minnesota woman would be the first person to receive a miniaturized version of the Jarvik 7 heart. The newspapers quote hospital sources as saying that doctors hope the surgery will help the gravely ill woman survive until a human heart can be found to replace the artificial one. A small interruption in the pipeline of heroin into the Yakima Valley was made last night by the Joint City County Narcotics Unit. Newsbeat's Ken Crockett has the details of the raid and news from Superior Court today in this report. A small quantity of black tar heroin was seized by officers after search warrants were served on two Yakima residents. Arrested inside an apartment near Second Street and East I Street last night was 28 year old Antonio Zamora Guzman. He's being held for possession of a controlled substance and authorities say they also found a gun during the raid. Narcotics agents later arrested two other people inside a house in the 1500 block of Mead Avenue where a quantity of heroin was also discovered. Police arrested Crescenziano Rodriguez and Garamina Mercado and they're being held for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver it. Mail was set at five thousand dollars today for both individuals. In other court action 18 year old Phyllis Lee of Yakima pleaded guilty to trespassing at Davis High School in November. She was originally charged with tampering with the witness involved in the case of Thurman Landerts who recently resigned as head wrestling coach rather than face disciplinary action for what the Yakima School District called misconduct. Lee was given a suspended one year jail term on the condition she not returned to the Davis campus without written permission. She was also ordered to pay 90 dollars in court costs. And finally the trial date for 19 year old Randy Tobin of Taupanace was moved until February 10th. Tobin is charged with two counts of first degree arson and three counts of second degree arson in connection with several fires late in August in the Taupanace area. This is Ken Crockett reporting. The Sea Scouts of Seattle have a new vessel to call their own. The federal government's gift is old but appreciated as the young group of seamen lost their ship in a storm last year. Chris Lagueras reports on the Sea Scouts plan for the Onar. She's not the best looking boat but that's okay. The Onar is more than 30 years old. During that time she's hauled passengers and freight for the Army and been used by the University of Washington for research. Today the federal government gave the Onar to the Sea Scouts in Seattle. They'll use her to learn lessons in seamanship and have some fun while they're doing it. All this ship needs is a little sprucing up. We're going to be repainting, doing a lot of fix up work, adding bunks to the interior, chipping the decks down and refainting them, refinishing them. The Onar replaces a vessel the Sea Scouts lost last year. Their old ship, the Propeller, ran into some foul weather off the coast of Alaska. A combination of high winds and fog helped put the Propeller on the rocks. Lee Swanson and 18 other Scouts were on board. We apparently dragged anchor at about four in the morning and ended up on a reef about a mile from where we had anchored. The boat flooded up in the bow and went down, listed over on her side and we waited for rescue for two and a half hours. All the Scouts were saved but they lost everything except the clothes on their back. Even lost the Propeller. It was so badly damaged it had to be scuttled. It was a meeting place for a lot of friends and we lost that. It was like losing part of ourselves. The Scouts did salvage this sign from the Propeller. They'll rename this ship in memory of the one they lost, expecting the second Propeller to be just as much fun as the first. That's going to do it for News Beaton this Wednesday evening. Thanks for joining us. We'll see you tomorrow. We'll have one more Polandthy
