Neighbor to the north, steady, safe and reliable. Canada's Camelot reawakens only with the fleeting appearances of Pierre Elliott Trudeau. No, it won't be the same. I mean, Trudeau is a man of true international stature. Moroni's a slick local politician. Personalities aside, with a Reagan Washington and a Mulroney Ottawa, North America will be a conservative continent wall to wall for the first time in more than 25 years. Bob Simon, CBS News, Ottawa. In three black townships near Johannesburg, South Africa today, steep rent increases sparked rioting that killed 11 people. Houses and cars were set aflame, streets were blocked by barricades. The violence was said to be the worst since the Soweto rioting eight years ago. In Santa Clara County, California, a few miles north of the Monterey Peninsula, they grow a remarkably firm, bright red tomato. Stouffer's calls it the perfect murrieta. Not quite as large as a tennis ball. It's juicy and meaty and filled with the hearty, rich taste of a great-sourced tomato. Now you know one of the reasons why Stouffer's lasagna is as good as can be. Skill, pride, know-how. To be the best, to build the best. At General Motors it takes continuous training. Get the best people from the line, give them the best tools, robots, computers. Teach them the new technology. They pass every test, so our new cars will pass yours. Nobody sweats the details like GM. It is not new. It is not improved. It's probably right in your house, and it fights plaque. It's Listerine Antiseptic. Recent clinical tests prove that Listerine kills the germs that cause plaque, a germ film that forms on your teeth. And yes, it still kills the germs that cause bad breath. Rinsing with Listerine in addition to regular brushing reduces plaque by up to 50% over brushing alone. Listerine fights plaque for better oral hygiene. It's in your bathroom cabinet. Use it. There's a lot of talk these days about politics and religion, but in New York this week one political figure is practicing the sort of thing that is preached every Sunday. Harold Dow reports. Ladies and gentlemen, the former President of the United States. Jimmy Carter has always considered himself to be a humble man. As president, he made it a point to carry his own bags. Today, a carpenter, he carried his own tools. The former president and a busload of Georgia church volunteers came to a rundown neighborhood in lower Manhattan to renovate this abandoned tenement. The project is being conducted by a nonprofit international Christian organization that builds low-cost housing for the poor all over the world. Officials from Habitat for Humanity say the work Jimmy Carter is doing in this neighborhood is historic. Never before, they say, has a former president volunteered his services as a carpenter. I've always been a working person on the farm, on a tractor, building furniture, or working like this. I've been doing this kind of work since I was a teenager, so it's not anything new to me. Officials say it will take at least a half million dollars to renovate this dilapidated building. No government funds will be used. All money will be donated. Neighborhood volunteers who work on the 20 units will then have a chance to buy them, $30,000 to $35,000 each. Very favorable terms. We use what we call the economics of Jesus. No profit, no interest, 20 to 25 years to pay. As the work was going on inside, community people gathered outside. They came to see the former president at work. It's a lot can be said, but when you come down to the muscle, then you show you care. And so, Jimmy Carter spent this holiday laboring at exactly the kind of project President Reagan says this country needs more of. People helping people without any help from Washington. We've got some jobs in here that I never had as president, I'll say that. Harold Dow, CBS News, New York. That's the CBS Evening News for this Labor Day. Dan Rather will be back tomorrow. I'm Bill Curtis, CBS News, New York. Good night. Every six months, American Airlines pilots fly thousands of miles. L.S. Friday, daylight. Without ever leaving this room.
