or on Como four. I was half awake, half asleep. A fall storm brings a wake up call to Western Washington. And then I look up and there's branches in my room. Drenching rain makes umbrellas useless and has rivers testing their banks. Strong wind takes out power lines and trees and sends children on one playground scrambling for cover. We heard all these cracks, so we jumped off the trampoline and trees started falling. Now, first for local news, Como four news. First for local news, our fall storm has turned deadly tonight. A man was electrocuted on Highway nine near Lake Stevens. Como's Joe Furia is live tonight with the latest. Joe. Well, Kathy power crews are still out here as you can see behind me right now, working on the down line. We're told the victim had been driving by thought he saw a brush fire just down this road that you see behind me. Stopped his car, got out and tried to go over and stomp it out. But it was not actually a brush fire. Instead, it was a live wire and he was electrocuted. So we have this tragedy that happened right here and a near miss just a few miles away in Marysville. Kids were playing on this swing moments before a tree crashed down, missing them by inches. It freaked us out as branches started raining down. The kids rushed under this trampoline when we are still under the trampoline. A whole bunch of trees started falling. They crossed their fingers and hoped. Please, please don't make the tree. Please trees. Don't hit us. Miraculously, no one was hurt, but the damage is extensive. Then this tree over here took half my roof off and the other one fell down on my shed. There's four down over here. Jake Baylor lost a huge chunk of his roof and look at Todd Rymus pickup covered in debris. It put a scare in everybody. Todd and his wife Cindy were hit particularly hard. That play set the kids were on when the trees started coming down is in their backyard and they worry more trouble is on the way. I mean, it's kind of scary even being out here because when the wind does gust, they really sway. The Rymus and their neighbors tell us they were concerned something like this might happen in heavy wind. So much so they even called the county to see if some trees could be removed but claim they were told they were going to be removed. The county would know because of a nearby salmon run. We've called several times asking to remove trees and stuff due to safety and you know, we wasn't able to do so because of the spawning area. Not far from that Marysville neighborhood, a tragedy along Highway 9 where a downed power line electrocuted a man. He was driving down Highway 9 saw what he thought was a brush fire got out of his car attempted to stop the brush fire out and apparently was electrocuted. So tonight's windstorm ends in tragedy for one local man who police say was just trying to help reporting live near Lake Stevens. Joe Furia Como for News. Thank you, Joe. That fall storm caused damage all across Western Washington today. Take a look at what happened in Federal Way. Robin Olson was sleeping in her bedroom when a 50 foot tree came crashing into her house. Branches stuck through the ceiling like spikes. I was half awake half asleep and I heard like a crashing noise and then I look up and there's branches in my room and there's water all over my floor. And a big tree took out a car on Sandpoint Way in Seattle. No one was hurt here, but the tree also knocked over some power lines and blocked the road for a while. Same story tonight in Bremerton. The wind knocked over a huge tree which landed on a car and some power lines. Crews had to work carefully to remove the debris from the line. And part of the Washington coast is all but cut off tonight. Highway 101 is closed between Port Angeles and Nea Bay because of a mudslide blocking the road. The slide knocked a logging truck into Lake Crescent. The driver was able to get out the window and swim to shore. He'll be okay, but it'll be at least tomorrow morning before they can start clearing Highway 101. This is all part of a weather system that's going to be with us for a while. Come over for Steve Poole is live with the latest on the storm. Steve? Alright Dan, let's give you the latest that we have as of this point. The high wind warning has been dropped. However, rain is still very much a situation. Here's a look at the storm as it continues to affect us. It is beginning to lift to the north, so that's some good news in that regard. It will tend to weaken it a little bit as it slows down. Let's take you through some of the things that we're watching. Now you mentioned the situation over near Nea Bay and some of the problems that's causing. That's specifically the result of the fact that we've had a lot of rain over there. Up to 5.81 inches of rainfall has fallen along the Olympic Peninsula and especially up around Nea Bay. And as a result of that, we've got some obviously serious flooding and some conditions there that caused some problems for us. So here's the story. We do still have the flood watches up on a number of rivers, particularly the counties over on the coast and the northern Olympic Peninsula counties. We still have flood warnings up on the Elwha River. We have them on the Skokomish River and we have them on the Bogashil. Other than that, we have flood watches in Skagit, Whatcom, King and Snohomish County. We'll continue to monitor all this for you and we'll have more for you in the regular forecast coming up in about 10 minutes. We'll talk to you then, Stephen. Of course we will stay on top of this threatening weather for you. Tune in first thing tomorrow morning before you head off to work or send the kids to school to get the weather and traffic updates on Como 4 News beginning at 5 a.m. Hop online at comotv.com or check out Como 1000 News on the radio. It's the end of the line for a popular Boeing airplane. The company says it will no longer build the 757. Como 4's Jennifer Parker is live in Renton tonight with what this means for all the thousands of workers there. Jennifer? Kathy, the last 757 will roll out of this Renton plant in 2004. Now it is the end of an era for Boeing and for those who made a career making the 757. Boeing rolled out the first 757 in 1982. The company delivered the first five seven to Eastern Airlines that same year. Eastern is long gone and now the line that produced more than a thousand 757s is going too. In 20 plus years of production, Boeing has delivered 1,034 of the twin jets. But it has orders for only 18 more and has only delivered 13 so far this year. The decision came now in part because Continental Airlines turned six orders of the 757 into six orders for the less expensive 737. A plane Boeing chief executive Alan Mulally says the Renton plant will continue to build. The 737 line is going to keep operating in Renton with ever improving quality and productivity. We're really pleased with our operations in Renton. For how long? For as long as the world wants 737s and this is a family of airplanes that's the most successful airplane in the history of aviation. The 737 has grown to handle more passengers at a price tag roughly 20 million dollars less per jet. Along with the 737, Boeing hopes the 7E7 will be the replacement plane for the 757. As for layoffs, that number is uncertain. Clearly it's dependent on how travel comes back and how fast the airlines return to profitability. We spoke with a machinist union representative today. He says he believes 200 machinist jobs will be affected. Reporting live in Renton, Jennifer Parker, Coma 4 News. Of course we'll stay on that story too. Jennifer, thank you. Tacoma police worry it's only a matter of time before a serial rapist strikes again. This man is wanted for four attacks in as many months. The first was in June. The most recent assault was two weeks ago. Police say the man is stalking young women in a neighborhood a few blocks south of the Tacoma mall. He raped one 12-year-old girl at Knife Point. Another young victim managed to escape his clutches when she bit him. Pierce County Crimestoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that helps them arrest the rapist. We now know why yesterday's ferry crash in New York was so destructive. Ten people were killed, dozens hurt when the ferry slammed into a pier. The 300-foot, 3,000-ton ferry was traveling at an estimated three to four times its normal speed. It approached the Staten Island ferry landing and instead of docking at its usual strip, it went nearly 400 feet off course, slamming into a maintenance pier. There are now reports Assistant Captain Richard Smith may have blacked out at the wheel just minutes before the crash. A brave little boy from Darrington, one of only eight in the country, fighting a rare and strange condition. It's a body age faster than a normal person and it kind of makes you a little bit smaller. Next, why Seth and his mom want to share his story with you. Also ahead. In my commentary, how many more children's graves will be dug before we demand the DSHS step up and protect kids? Rafael Gomez should be the last. And why some people might not be able to use the carpool lanes anymore, what new restrictions the state might impose. I looked around at a lot of different cars. Everybody's got 0% or cash back, but it's not just price. It's the quality and how much it costs to drive and what it's worth when you sell it. Toyota Camry had everything I wanted, including a longer warranty and the highest overall safety rating. That's all I needed to know. The idea begins with Toyota quality. See your nearest Toyota dealer now. Wow, we look at that grocery selection, but we don't carry half the stuff. More selection means more overhead. The price are probably outrageous. Here, zoom in. Yeah, outrageous means low. Look at that price for peanut butter. Got it. Actually, that's the price for two. Oh. We are so fired. Top food and drug, quality in the bag, savings in the bill. At Quest, we live among our small business customers. So we talk to them a lot about their communication needs. And what they tell us is make it really simple, predictable, affordable. Two beloved pets are really in the dog house tonight. The dogs named Levi and Buddy were home alone when a fire broke out in their house in Port Orchard. Investigators say the fire was started by the kitchen stove, but the owners say it was off when they left. The family suspects one of the dogs jumped on the counter and managed to turn on the burners. Firefighters rescued the dogs. They're both fine. Tonight on ABC's Primetime Thursday, maybe you saw a report about progeria, a disease that strikes children, causing them to age at 10 times the normal rate. Only eight children in the U.S. have this disease, including a brave boy in Darrington, Washington named Seth Cooke. Only eight children in the U.S. have this disease, including a brave boy in Darrington, Washington named Seth Cooke. Oh, I like greeting. Aside from his appearance, Seth is like any other 10 year old. He likes the fifth grade, playing X-Box and playing video games. Aside from his appearance, Seth is like any other 10 year old. He likes the fifth grade, playing X-Box and his favorite book is Goosebumps. Seth also knows he sometimes gets strange looks from people because of his condition, progeria. It makes your body age faster than a normal person and it kind of makes you a little bit smaller. Seth's shy, but not self-conscious about his condition and he doesn't mind talking about it. I like doing interviews. You like doing interviews? Yeah. Good job. Seth and his mom have appeared on national TV. They want to get the message out about what progeria is to help other parents and children who might not understand what they're going through. There are doctors around the world that haven't seen progeria, so if we can get more media coverage, it's more encouraging for those parents that have children. They're going to the doctors and trying to figure out what's going on. Where's page 40? Aside from that, Patty just wants what any mother wants for her children. I just want to make sure that he's happy. That's my main goal. Seth says when he grows up he wants to be a police officer, which is what his grandfather did. For more information about progeria, you can go to our website, comotv.com, and click on hot links. We provided a link to the Progeria Research Foundation. Four children in central Washington are in protective custody while their parents are under investigation for child abuse. Rafael Gomez had severe skull fractures when he died last month. Just two years old, the boy from Afraid has spent much of his life in foster care. Rafi was taken away from his biological parents several times after he was hospitalized with broken bones, burns, and cuts, but he was returned to the parents three times. Rafi's foster family thought they could save him. So far no charges are filed, but they might be when the final autopsy report comes out. In his commentary, Como Forest Ken Schramm says Rafael's death should be the last one ever because of an inability to protect children. To find what's wrong with DSHS, just follow the trail of dead children. Eli Creekmore, Matthew Parsons, Edwin McDaniel, Loria Grace, Zaniya Nobles, to name just a few. Just since 1997, dozens of dead children lead a path to DSHS. Dozens of broken, battered bodies. Dozens of babies burned and kicked. Dozens of funerals. Dozens of times DSHS stepped in, then stepped back, and then stepped over another dead child. Now we have Rafael Gomez. Three times DSHS returned Rafael to his biological parents. Despite being born addicted to drugs, despite two broken legs, despite the wounds to his head and the burns on his hand, little Rafael was bundled up and given back to the people likely to be charged in his death. DSHS says it'll review its policies and procedures. How bureaucratically comforting. I'll bet DSHS reviewed its policies after every dead child. Maybe if DSHS had changed its policies to reflect the safety of children instead of its false, warm, fuzzy notion of what makes a family, maybe there wouldn't be dozens of tiny graves. That's what's wrong with DSHS. Children die, but the dysfunctional agency just lives on. Send your thoughts to Ken Schramm at comofornews.com. Three may be the lucky number if you want to use the carpool lanes. The state wants to limit HOV lanes to cars with three or more people in them. Highway 520 already requires three people to make up a carpool, but on most other highways it just takes two. You know, I don't care what lane you're in. Yeah, with weather like this, it is just a mess out there. We were chasing accidents all over the place today. Of course the wind became a little bigger story, but the rain continues. Yeah, and the wind has kind of calmed down a little bit as I mentioned earlier. We dropped the high wind warning for most of the northern counties, in fact all of them, so that's not a concern. Rain continues to be a factor, and the wind is still a little bit out there. Take a look at 520, and you can see the situation there. You watch the camera kind of bouncing a little bit, and we still have the water a little active on the south side of the bridge. Of course, the bridge deck is wet, so that tells you what you need to know there, too. At any rate, we're at 62 degrees right now, and that's the other thing that's going to happen here tonight. Along with the rain and the wind and so on, it's really mild out there. I don't know if you've stepped outside at all tonight, but it's kind of odd this time of year to have almost warm wind coming in here. 66 are high today. The record is 70 degrees set last year, so as you can see it's been kind of an interesting time weather-wise. I use that word advisedly, but anyway, take a look here. Here's the system. It's actually beginning to lift to the north a little bit. You heard earlier we were talking about the situation over in Forks and the amount of rainfall they've had out near Neah Bay. Check this out. The total of rainfall for Neah Bay in the last 24 hours, 5.81 inches of rain in a 24-hour period. No wonder they're having problems with Highway 101 over there. Elsewhere, as you can see on the radar, you really get a sense of how the rain has shifted more to the north. The heavier rain still residing up around Neah Bay, across Vancouver Island, and into southern B.C. But a lot of other places are obviously getting wet. It's just the bulk of it has slid to the north now. All right, let's give you a sense of where we're going from here. For tonight, the rain will continue kind of on and off. Most of it concentrated to the north. It will also remain more windy than other areas to the north. Upper 50s to near 60 degrees for our low temperatures tonight. Same story on the east side. Rain more so north, less so to the south. So tomorrow we still keep it rainy. We still keep it a little on the windy side. Not as much as today on the wind. Still gets wet locally. We have mid-60s to upper 60s in the central Puget Sound Basin. Everyone's going to get rain and wind, so let's concentrate on these temperatures here. Upper 60s on the east side. The rain will be a little bit less there, a little bit heavier to the north, and extending up into Vancouver Island and the rest of B.C. We've got low 60s for you, rainy and windy there. Along the coast, the north coast will probably stay windy. The south coast is going to be more so just the scattered showers and cloudy skies. But look at this. Portland goes to 73, 70 in Chehalis. We have a snow level that remains relatively high, 9,000 feet. And then east of the mountains, warm there too. We've got highs expected in the mid-70s, 75 in the Tri-Cities, 67 in Wenatchee, but not a lot of sunshine, just cloudy and almost muggy with the field. Rainy and windy primarily to the north throughout the night here. Tomorrow we're going to start things off with still rainy conditions, but not quite as windy. And then in the afternoon we should actually get a little bit of a break here going into the weekend. But it's going to be mild, almost 70 degrees. Take a look at the extended forecast where we keep your weekend always in view. My goodness, look at that. We hold on to the rain, get to a dry period to start off next week. A little bit of rain in the middle of the week, and then we dry, dry, dry from there. That sounds good right now. Okay. And then there were two. The American League pennant on the line, game seven, extra innings, Boston, New York. And the curse. Boston was hanging in there until Brett Boone's little brother came to the plate. Eric is next with player reaction to the exciting finish. Well, look who it is. Oh yeah, I see you. Come on, baby. That's it, speed up. Yeah, you come to papa, you come right here. Give me some lip service. Yeah, that's right, baby. Plant one right here. Whoa, whoa, whoa, not so fast. Whoa, what a kisser. Now you can lease an Accord LX sedan for $2.39 a month for 36 months. I'll tell you what, love them or hate them. You gotta admit, the New York Yankees are something else, aren't they? Yankee starter Roger Clements tonight gave the baby his traditional pat on the head. You've heard all about the curse, but the Rockets didn't have his best stuff tonight. In the second inning, Trott Nixon took him out of the yard to right center field. A two run shot, the Red Sox jumped out in front to the fourth inning. Kevin Millar hit a moonshot to left way, way up there and gone. It was four to nothing Boston. Clements was taken out of the game. Things looked grim for the New York Yankees. The Yankees trailed five to two going into the eighth. Some people couldn't bear to watch. Pedro Martinez had pitched beautifully, but he'd thrown a lot of pitches. He was five outs away from the World Series. In the dugout, Derek Jeter told Aaron Boone, the ghosts will show up sooner or later. Jeter came up, ripped a double off the wall in right field. Grady Little, the Red Sox manager, left him in the game. Bernie Williams single to center field. Jeter came around to score. It was five to three. Grady Little visited Pedro and left him in the game. Hideki Matsui laced a double down the line and right. Grady Little didn't budge. He was sticking with his man. Look at Jeff Nelson. This was major league intense. Runners on second and third. Jorge Posada with the bleeder into center field. Nobody could get there. Two runs scored. It was all tied up five to five. The ghosts had shown up indeed. Yankee Stadium was bedlam to the bottom of the 11th. Now Aaron Boone up against Tim Wakefield. Leading by three as Boone hits it to deep left. That might send the Yankees to the World Series. For the hero in game seven. Aaron Boone, Brett's little brother, wins it for the Yankees. The curse of the Bambino lives. The ghosts are partying. The Bronx Bombers do it again. Wow. I can't even talk. This is, uh, Oh, it's so relying. It's unbelievable. I mean, Mo, so many heroes today. I just happened to run into one. You gotta be kidding me. It's awesome. And so it's the Yankees and the Marlins in the World Series. A victory Sunday over the Bears will give the Seahawks a five on one record. And their best start in franchise history. The Bears on the other hand, man, they are struggling. They've won only once this season. They're a far cry from the team that went to the playoffs just two years ago. Still, that doesn't mean Sunday is going to be a trip to grandma's house for the Hawks. Any given Sunday, you know, anything can happen. So you can't overlook any team in the NFA. Everybody's good. Everybody got great athletes. You gotta come out and bring your egg here. They're going to come in here clawing and fighting, man. They've got to make a triple cross country. And, uh, and I know the coach there, Geron, and I know he's going to have his team ready to play. And they got a lot of good talent, you know, the record is not an indication of the type of talent that they have on the team. How about a little high school football action tonight in the SPSL North? Kentridge against Sumner at French Field and Kent, Kentridge with the ball. John Beam takes it through a big hole, just strolls in for the touchdown. Kentridge beats Sumner 23-6. They're celebrating. Needs a little bit of work, but other than that, they look pretty good. Hang on to him. Don't drop him. Ouch. The Sonics have three games left in their preseason. They'll face Portland Saturday night in Spokane. Tonight in Los Angeles, LeBron James got his first look at Shaq and the Lakers in a preseason game. First quarter, Cavs down five, Darius Miles dumps it off to James who takes it in for the jam. LeBron finished with only eight points. Late in the fourth, one point lead for the Lakers. Derek Fisher passes to Carl Malone. The Lakers go on to win it 86-78. Canucks in Detroit tonight to face the Red Wings. Third period, Daniel Sedena to Vancouver chasing the puck. Gets checked hard into the glass by Urie Fisher and the glass shatters all over the place. The game would be delayed while they made repairs. Late in third, tied at two when Ray Whitney of the Wings puts in the rebound for the score. Detroit wins it three to two. And one other thing, according to Peter Gammons of ESPN, the M's will hire in the next two days or so, Mike Port, who is currently the vice president of baseball relations for the Boston Red Sox. Oh really? We'll see if that pans out. Oh, they've got to be crying in the past. Oh, they're hurting. They're hurting. Alright, thanks. Coming up next, a doggone amazing story. And look what they found. They brought the dog to shore, gave her to Lucy Dreyer, and Lucy, name the dog. You got it, Esther. You know why? Esther Williams. That's right.
