Tonight on Cap Local News at 6, teen pregnancy is still a major problem across the state. A new number show Yakima County has the highest teen pregnancy rate. See what's being done. A local coalition of minority residents wants everyone to know their status when it comes to HIV and AIDS. Hear why they say it's so important. And the bills are stacking up in Wapato. We'll explain why the city council is still struggling to get a much needed meeting. Stay tuned for these stories and many more. Cap Local News at 6 starts now. Local coverage you can count on. This is local news at 6 on Cap ABC where the forecast comes first. This is one of those nights that really shows the benefits of the digital Doppler network. We are tied into these five stations electronically so we can track storms around the region and lots of showers tonight, especially on the west side, but some moving through the east as well. Tomorrow we will be back to partly cloudy skies though cooler and breezy. The high in the valley tomorrow just 65. A little bit of a cool spell ahead. More on the forecast later in news. Good evening. I'm Dana Kowaluk. And I'm Jake Kamen. Thanks for stopping in. Topping the news tonight, parenting is a tough job at any age, but when you're a kid having kids it's even more difficult. It happens though. Four out of every ten girls become pregnant at least once by the age of 20. At 35's Denise Keller is live to tell us how Planned Parenthood is using an online quiz to make sure your teen isn't one of them. Statewide fewer teenage girls are getting pregnant. Yakima County has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the state. To mark National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, Planned Parenthood has posted a quiz online. It outlines different scenarios to make teens think about how they would handle high risk situations before they face them. That allows them to think about what they would do in advance is a really good way of getting the prevention message across so that they already can come up with some ideas on how they would protect themselves. The interactive website promotes safe sex and abstinence. Joanne Johnston with the Crisis Pregnancy Center says abstinence is the only way to reduce teenage pregnancy rates. Pregnancy is wonderful. I think it's great. I think that our number one message to them should be that abstinence is the best. That abstinence is the only 100% guarantee that you're not going to get pregnant. Some women's advocates say not enough women know about the morning after pill. They say it prevents unwanted pregnancies and abortions. Opponents on the other hand say the pill is a form of abortion itself. Reporting live, I'm Denise Keller. To take the online quiz, log on to CAPTV.com, click on News Links. A new project in Yakima County hopes to slow the spread of HIV. The People of Color Against AIDS Network or POCAN started its Know Your Status campaign today. POCAN will pay people in the Valley that have HIV or AIDS to bring friends in that might be at risk. The friends will get paid to be tested. Eldonna Beal says per capita Yakima County has some of the highest rates in the state. They realize, A, that they're at risk or they're part of the Hispanic community, especially the monolingual speaking folks that have come directly out of Mexico maybe to work the fields and they simply don't have the education. In order to get paid you have to qualify for the program. We can refer them to the health department who also does free testing. They won't get paid for that testing but they can also go and get testing done there. And these programs run until the end of the year. For more information call Eldonna 249-8725. Search crews have recovered the body of a Yakima man who drowned in Weenass Lake on Saturday. 47 year old Douglas Barber was fishing when his boat capsized around 7 Saturday night. Search and rescue teams searched until about midnight but couldn't find him. They resumed the search yesterday. Douglas was finally found yesterday afternoon just offshore in about 6 feet of water. A car accident claimed the life of Anthony Shiloh early this morning. The state patrol says Shiloh was exiting onto I-82 from Main Street and Union Gap. His car crossed the center line striking a guardrail and a bridge abutment. Shiloh was the only person involved and he died at the scene. Investigators are still trying to find out what caused this crash. If you have ever had car problems driving over Snoqualmie Pass you know what a nightmare it can be. It's just not a pleasant thought. If it happens to you though the State Department of Transportation will soon be able to help. Our region is getting an emergency response vehicle. It will be stationed at HIAC and help travelers with car problems between Kaleelum and North Bend. Casey McGill says it will have everything your car will need to get up and running again. It's providing them some gasoline to get them going, a jump start for dead battery, coolant for the cooling system should they overheat. It will be equipped with push bars to get them off the road. Now the new vehicle will cost over $67,000 and will be ready at the end of the summer. Now in the meantime the DOT will have a temporary vehicle available for travelers through the summer. Overdue bills will have to wait another week. The City of Wapato had to call off two council meetings last week because too many members were absent. That's leading to overdue bills all waiting on council approval. The City scheduled a special meeting for tomorrow to take care of this unfinished business. And called that one off when they found out the state law keeps them from using special meetings to pay bills. So now the city will have to wait until the next regular council meeting and that's scheduled for next Monday. I guess it's going to be interesting to see who does and doesn't show up. We'll be watching. So to come on Capital Local News at 6, we reach new heights with an Ike pole vaulter and see your motorsports moment. That's coming up in sports. Yakima is one step ahead of failing marriages. You know, more than half of all marriages end in divorce. But today pastors and civic leaders were recognized for their efforts to turn that tide. Yakima received the first ever Families Northwest Award presented to an entire community. Now the award is given each year but usually to individuals or organizations striving to make families stronger. That's impressive. Yes, very. We all love a little sun but can your eyes take the heat? Sometimes the sunglasses you wear may not protect your eyes as well as they should. In tonight's Do It Yourself report, Ted Florendo shows us how to pick the proper summer eyewear. Wait a sec. Sometimes those sunglasses you pick up at your local shop aren't as safe as you think. Come on. You see, they may look good but they may not protect you from ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light are raised from the sun. They can be harmful not only on your skin but on your eyes too. Cila Vision Clinic, this is Robert. May I help you? Robert Shaw from the Cila Vision Clinic says a wrong pair of sunglasses can be hazardous to your eyes. Well, basically if there's no ultraviolet protection you're not wearing anything at all. The color that's in the lens is more of a cosmetic appeal and you're getting the same effect sunburn to the eye is the easy way to think about it. So selecting the proper sunglasses should be a meticulous process especially since you need your eyes. So step one, make sure the glasses that you want have this label. It should stay 100% UV protected. If not, well, you might as well just toss them away. Since sometimes the sunglasses that stay on the shelves too long can actually lose their UV protected. So you're better off asking the manager about how long they've been on the shelves. If the glasses have been on there more than let's say a year or two, well, that could be a big problem. Lastly, make sure that they have polycarbonate lenses. They're shatterproof and can last a lot longer during physical activities. Try to stay away from glass lenses. They may break too easily and cause some damage to your cornea. Now you don't have to buy the expensive ones. Just remember to follow the rules when you're selecting your summer specs. In Yakima, I'm Ted Florenda reporting. Shades. Just like Fonzie. He likes the shades. Tom Spencer joins us with his Pinpoint Forecast. He says the winds tonight will really cool us down for tomorrow. Well, of course, I wouldn't want to get complacent with the nice weather we had over the weekend. Let's take a look outside right now at our Northwest InfoNet Skycam, a live picture of the current weather. And it's been unsettled today. But again, we are going to see some improvement overnight. Thirty three thousand miles of timber and steel from Portland to New Orleans, from Los Angeles to Chicago and the beauty of a land that spans half a continent. It's been said that in those 33,000 miles of rail, you can feel America's pulse. Children with Down syndrome are a gift of life. The Buddy Walk was just an unbelievable experience. There was just celebration all over, all around us. As a mom, it just really touched my heart. I tell everybody about how good Walmart has been to us. Their people came out and walked. They provided lunch. At Walmart, we have become partners. They love our kids. That's what we all want, is our children to be accepted for who they are. I was very proud of our walk. People cared about our kids. slogan Cool down coming over the next 24 hours or so. Tonight the cold front will push across Washington State. In fact, it is pushing across right now. That's what's kind of driving the winds across us. And by tomorrow morning it will be well to the east of us and we will be in this pocket of much cooler air. So be prepared for that. It will be nice tomorrow just in the mid-60s instead of the very nice 70s that we enjoyed over the weekend. But at least it was over the weekend. We've got a band of clouds moving through right now kind of sweeping up to the north. That's going to pass relatively quickly. We're not expecting this one to really cause us anything in the way of rainfall until maybe Saturday night and on into Sunday. I'll break that down for you in the five-day forecast. But from here on out it's going to be some improvement. Again, it's going to be cooler but at least the skies are going to go back to partly cloudy in just the next little while. Showers today were heavy on the west side from Portland right on up to the Canadian border and then just a few that have broken through on the east side. Fairly heavy showers at times where they've hit but you can see that they're kind of scattered. Let's fly through it in 3D. We're starting off the coast looking back at Oregon and Washington there. Just wanted to show you how far south those showers extend and how congregated they are on the west side of the Cascades. Meanwhile, our forecast looks like this. Tomorrow partly cloudy will pinpoint the valley at a low of about 40. Ellensburg a little bit warmer at about 43. That's after isolated showers. Showers and thunderstorms finally clear off will become partly cloudy and our winds out of the west 15 to 25 will become relatively light. Then tomorrow partly cloudy and cooler just 65 in Yakima and mostly cloudy tomorrow night. Winds tomorrow out of the west again 10 to 20 miles an hour. So breezy, not quite windy in Yakima but windy in Ellensburg with local blowing dust possible. Wind's 20 to 30 miles an hour tomorrow in the Kittitas Valley. Otherwise partly cloudy with a high of about 58 degrees. The five day forecast on Wednesday still partly cloudy, a high of 68, a low of 33. Growers are going to want to watch the temperature over the next couple of nights. Thursday mostly sunny with a high of 70. Friday still dry in 70 and Saturday a high of about 68 and a slight chance of showers developing again. Okay, so far in May have local temperatures been averaging above normal or below normal? Local temperatures above normal or below normal? I'll give it some thought. I'll have the answer in a bit. Meanwhile, a personal pan pizza certificate is going out to Taylor Powers, age 9 of Yakima. Taylor drew us a nice picture enjoying the spring weather in a hammock. And again, kids from 2 to 12 can get involved just by going by round table and coloring the weather. We're giving away a pizza every night. Thank you, Tom. Paul Rican joins us with the athlete of the week going to the track, huh? Yeah, we like to cover the track and field people down at the Oval, but we're going to kind of go to the side of the Oval for this one. When it comes to Big Nine track and field, the Eisenhower girls run away from the competition, but this year they're also out leaping the Big Nine thanks to a high flying sophomore. Sprint, plant, and push. It seems simple, and for Doria Holbrook it is, almost to the point where it's a natural born talent. As a freshman, Doria set an Ike record for girl pole holders, and she's only getting better. She's got a good background. She's been doing gymnastics since she was a little, you know, young girl, and she's a diver, you know, here at Eisenhower, and she does real well at that, and it's a good crossover, those two sports. The super soft has separated herself from the competition. Holbrook has the fifth best fault in the state of Washington and ranks among the top 30 nationwide. But this isn't your everyday have no fear athlete. Actually I'm petrified of heights. I don't know, because you don't see the height on the way up. You don't really see much. It's not until you start falling, you're like, wow, that's kind of cool, and you're not that high. But when it comes to setting new goals, Doria has no fear. Well, the Olympics are 2004, and I'm a senior in 2004, so. That's more than just a dream. Doria has two years to add two feet to her vault, and at the rate she's going, the Olympics are just a sprint, plant, and push away. Holbrook continues to outlead the competition. Over the weekend, she took first place at the Big Nine District Finals in Pasco. Coming up in sports, we'll rev up the engines for the motorsport moment, and we'll talk Mariners baseball as they were at Pedro Martinez away from a BOSOC sweep. That and more sports is next. Baseball analysts say Pedro Martinez is only at 80%, but anytime the Red Sox takes on Seattle, less than his best is still pretty darn good. The Red Sox salvaged game three of the series with a 10-4 blowout win last night. Pedro had the M's guessing all night, striking out 12 while allowing only four hits and eight innings of work. Martinez is now a perfect nine and oh and pitching against the Mariners' batting order. We needed to lean on somebody to get us going early, and he was really determined today and he had great stuff. After a four and two home stand, Seattle goes back on the road. Tomorrow they open a three game set in the Sky Dome. Williams took two of three from Toronto just a week ago. Fans like driving excitement, but they also like some carnage. Big time collision here. But in the end, Brandon real holds on for the wire to wire win. In Tonino, Washington, meanwhile, the Northwest veteran series continues. Kevin Hamlin of Snohomish takes first to hold on to the season lead in points. Randy's Top Comp goes for about $40,000 to be exact. Still a pretty expensive toy, but it can finish up a quarter of a mile a track in less than 10 seconds. We're having too much fun here now. We'll be back tomorrow night. Randy has yet to race his Top Comp in actual competition, but that day is coming, and once he gets comfortable behind the wheel, there will be a new Renegade on the Raceway. Speaking of racing, tell you what, you need to race the jack in the box right now. Get your little Mariner's antenna ball. Oh, that's a fun. Let's get a shot of it. There we go. Oh, I like it.
