I think they're earlier this year, maybe Alan Carr is clashing. Let's take a look from overhead to get a look at the overview. Here's Shrinah Carr in with his famous for Coco facade, downtown Los Angeles, the 61st annual Academy Awards, the second year in a row here. They were here back in 1946 and 1947. And they're back here again. So without any further ado, I believe we have a couple of nominees right here. Very unctuous beginning. Jodie Foster, nominated for the Accused Best Performance by an Actress. Hello there. Yeah, I guess so. Do people know that you go back to being, is it true, the original copper-tone baby? Oh, I love that. Well, I wasn't the one on the billboard because that was in the 50s, but I was the one on the television, yes, in 1965 or whatever that was. Jodie, this is your second nomination, Taxi Driver, 1976. Right, I was 13. How do you feel about this one? It looks different. I mean, it's, I feel like it didn't really change my life then. I doubt it'll change my life now, but it's probably, it's kind of like the best thing that can happen to be nominated, isn't it? Well, you've got a woman's perspective on the whole thing now. It's got to be a whole lot more real to you than it was as a kid. Well, it was pretty real then, but I remember, I remember knowing full well that a grownup was going to win. So I knew that it was really just a big party and I'm trying to kind of keep that attitude now. Well, the odd makers are having a hard time in your category. It's hard to choose. There's no obvious choice. You're one of the co-favorites. Be an odds maker for us. What's the chance? Don't choose. Don't choose. Go to the party and have fun. Thank you, Jodie. Congratulations. Bye bye. River Phoenix nominated for best supporting role in the movie running on Empty. Obviously your first nomination. How are you feeling about it? I'm very overwhelmed by it all here. It's a big event with a great history behind it. Are you the kind of person who has prepared and accepted speech or are you just going to go through this? No, I'm not really expecting anything here. So no, I haven't prepared anything. Hello, Marcel. I've got a list of important good influential names. If is the key word there. Here's the list. Oh, he does. Shall we read some of those names now? This is the list. Okay. Your siblings are actors also. I'm assuming as you grew up you talked about your careers in the acting business. None of you ever dreamed that one of you would be nominated for an Oscar. Well, no, it's not something that I do my work for and I wouldn't do something that ever thought would come into the picture. Excuse the pun, but it is, it's interesting. River, good luck to you. Congratulations. Thank you, Marcel. Okay. We have a lot more coming up. They are stacking up here at the show before the show. We'll be back live from the Shrine Auditorium right after this. Okay, there's Oscar. Here's Sawney, here's Steve. Corey Feldman and Drew Barrymore. Hello, Corey. Drew, how are you, sweetheart? Good to see you. You are doing what tonight, Corey? I'm performing in a number for Young Hollywood. This is the number that is in the remake of the old Coconut Grove. That's the first number. This is the second number, which is like all the new artists, you know, all the new actors, everybody getting together. And like we're the Oscar winners of tomorrow. And Drew might be one of the luckiest people here tonight because she's just going to have fun. She's here to enjoy. Exactly, and support him. Drew, this may not be the place, but how are you? I'm incredible. I've never felt better in my life, and I'm happy in this place. That's the best news of all, Drew. It's good to see you. Have a good time. Good luck. Thank you very much. Bye-bye. Yuzhanna, the mayor of the city of Los Angeles, Mayor Bradley. Mrs. Bradley, how are you? Hi, Mayor Bradley. How are you doing? Any comments, Mayor? This is Hollywood's night. A billion people around the world got their eyes on Los Angeles and Hollywood. We're very excited about it. The motion picture industry has its capital right here in Los Angeles, and that's where it ought to be. How's the traffic? It's a dream. We worked very hard to be sure our plan was in effect, and it's moving very smoothly. Congratulations. That's a close. Thank you very much, Mr. Mayor. Enjoy the evening. One of the big events, of course, that happens at Oscar night is the party at Spago Restaurant. And a lot of that happens later. Tony, you'll be there later. I'll be there tonight, yes. Right now, let's go to Spago as they're getting set up. Let's go to Dana James. Hello, Dana. Hi, Steve. Hi, Tony. You know, I'm in another Los Angeles location that is full of beautiful women and very handsome men. You mentioned it, IMS Spago. And this place looks incredible tonight. Not that it never does, but tonight it just has a little air of excitement and a little oomph that adds to all the sexiness of it. There are flowers all through the room and the centerpieces on the table have reels of film and old reels of tape. And there are posters on every window overlooking the sunset strip of the movies nominated for the Academy Award. And there are 10 television sets in this restaurant. I went around the room and I counted them. So there is no excuse for the celebrities who are going to be here tonight to not know who's nominated in what category and who has won. There are also balloons on the ceiling that say, the stars shine brighter above the sunset strip. And that is definitely the theme here tonight. This is Irving Lazar's party. He's going to be here in just a little bit. But right now we have a man who is behind the scenes. He's there for us every year. He coordinates this party. He is a star in his own right. Wolfgang Puck. How do you do it every year? How are you? Well, it's really actually very easy. We are so used to doing it. Now it's like the fifth time already. No, actually the seventh time and the fourth time with Irving Lazar. And I think it's really a wonderful party. Everybody has a great time. And you know, we have the best food possible. Potatoes with caviar, great champagne. You know, we have Piper champagne, a wonderful one. And then we have soft Jordan caviar and chappelage. And we have chicken with black truffles. And it's really a great dinner. Oh, that sounds great. The main thing is still the television. Hopefully all our friends shall win. All right, so if they don't come for the fun, they come for the food. We're going to come back a little bit later in our show. We're going to tell you who's set to get here and who is here. Right now I'm Dana James live at Spago. Back to you, Tony and Steve. Okay, from the quietude of Spago Restaurant, which will heat up right into the madness here at Shrine Auditorium. Sally Kirkland, nominated last year. It's a little different this year. How does it feel? It feels great to be a member of the Academy and vote this year. Last year I couldn't vote. And I really love all the performances. So in my mind they've all won. Is this a lot more relaxing for you than last year? Yes, it's a lot more relaxed. You're going to be in the production number in the beginning of the show, are you not? No? Well, somebody said you were getting a beautiful gown because you were going to be in the production number. And it is beautiful. Sally, thank you. It feels like being on the right of Patrick Swayze. Not bad, huh? Thank you, Sally. We do have Patrick Swayze coming up. We'll try to get him and his wife Lisa, but I think we're going to commercial first. We'll be back live from the Shrine Auditorium. Hang with us. We'll be back. We'll be back. We'll be back. We'll be back. We'll be back. We'll be back. Kevin Clyde of Fish Call Wanda, Martin Landau, Tucker, the man and his dream, River Phoenix, running on empty, and Dean Stockwell, married to the mob. I've got a baby Take a good look at me I'll be back It's the Shrine Auditorium. Steve Edwards here with Lisa. We're waiting on Lisa and Patrick Swayze. They are coming in. It's kind of like stacking up over LAX right now. Lisa, hi. Patrick Swayze. How are you? A year ago, you came through here, and people would not leave you alone. You were a crab at passion time. How was it this year? I think they got better security this year. Another opinion. Actually, it's kind of funny showing up this year, because it's like going to Disneyland for the second time. Last year, it was like, oh my God, this is what it looks like from down here. Which is really terrific. This has been a good year for you. You had, of course, the flaming success last year. Now you've been working hard. What have you got going? I've got Roadhouse, which I'm really excited about, coming out May 19th, I think. And then in the fall, I've got Next of Ken coming out, which is much more of a performance film. I'm real proud of both of them. If you're staying true to its Houston roots, Lisa. Oh, gosh. We spent so much time in Houston. I start wondering if it's our second home. It's good to see you, Patrick. Regards to your mom. Lisa, thank you very, very much. Okay, now, if we would, Gina and Jeff. Gina Davis and Jeff Goldblum. Most magnificent. Hello, Gina. Hi, Jeff, how are you? Hi, how are you? Nice to see you. You are nominated. Part of the couple theme. Part of the couple theme of Alan Carr, yes. Nominated for supporting actress for accidental tours. How are you feeling right now? I'm excited. I'm nervous. What kind of support has Jeff been for you? I'm sorry? What kind of support has Jeff been? Incredibly supportive. I'm just hanging on to him for dear life. What has life been like with Gina the last month or so, Jeff? A whirly gig of Williams. It's been great. She's been going around the house singing and having... Okay, no. And you're going to be together on stage. Part of the couple theme. Are you just delighted with that idea that Gina's not going to be here alone? You're going to be able to be up there with her? Delighted. Gina, you look gorgeous. Jeff, you look okay. I'm getting there, yes. Gina, thank you. Good luck to you. Jeff Goldblum, thank you very, very much. Thank you. Okay, we're continuing here. Gene Hackman is standing here next. I believe we're going to get him. He's talking out to a guy. Yes, in the truck. What would you like us to do? Just a moment. Here is Gene Hackman. Gina, how are you? Gina, how are you doing? Nice to see you. All right, you're up for Best Actor, Mississippi Burning. You've been here before. How does it feel for you? Well, it feels pretty good. I'm very proud of the movie, and I would like it to do well tonight. I would hope that it would snag a couple that Rain Man doesn't get. Gene, how have you dealt with the controversy surrounding your movie? Those who say it's not an accurate portrayal of the civil rights movement in the 60s. What is your response to that? Well, I don't know. We're entertainers. We can call ourselves artists or historians or whatever you want to call it. But in the end, we're just entertainers, and we do kind of what's set in front of us. I'm disappointed that the film has come upon that kind of controversy, because I think it's a worthwhile film. I'd like a lot of people to see it. But I don't know what else to say about it. Maybe switch gears a little bit. A lot of people would say that you and Justin Hoffman are the two top contenders for the award tonight. You guys go way back to the Pasadena Playhouse. You were probably rivals then. I think you were voted some of the least likely to succeed. Take us back. This is incredible, Hallie. You were roommates in New York, weren't you? Yeah. I left the Playhouse a little earlier than Dustin and was in New York. And he then moved in with me and slept on the floor for a while until he found an apartment. And he still owes me money, and I'm going to try to get it tonight. You better find him. Good luck to you tonight. Thank you. The man who is on the spot, Alan Carr, the producer of the Oscars, is also the man who's excited about the Governor's Ball afterwards. So let's go to him in the setting of the Governor's Ball. Take it away, Alan. Hi, Steve. All of you who are watching the show out there see what the arrivals look like. This is the first time a television camera has been allowed to come in to see where the Governor's Ball is. The Governor's Ball is for the people who are the nominees and, of course, for the Oscar winners. And you can see that this gigantic, beautiful room was, well, it's an exhibition hall. And only three hours ago, it was very plain and very simple. Now it is set for 1,000 people. It has beautiful flowers from Holland that have been shipped over. We have a five-course meal. The band will be over there. There are some gold chairs there right now, but the band will be on that bandstand. It will be turning. The Oscars will be up there. The Oscars around, I should say, around the band will be playing up there. And all the stars who are nominated this year will come here first and have supper and dance. Oh, my gosh, I even got a glass of champagne. Thank you very much. Ambrosia is the caterer. I heard you talking to Gene Hackman. People always ask, what do the stars eat at dinner? Dinner will be around 9.15 tonight because in Los Angeles, the show is on from 6 to 6.15. We're starting with cold salmon. Alan, can you hear me? We were stressing your Four Seas theme. Oh, my Four Seas. My couples, my co-stars, my compadres, and my companions. And so this year we have Bruce and Demi. That's Willis and Moore. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Ryan and Farrah. Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart. Bob Hovind and Lucille Ball. Amy Overton and Richard Dreyfus. We're having legendary people from all age groups, from River Phoenix to Rob Lowe, who's going to be performing tonight, to Alice Faye, Roy Rogers, and Dale Evans, and Tony Martin. Okay, Alan, we wish you luck both with the Oscar broadcast and the show and the Governor's Ball, and you're very relaxed for a man who's really good. I'm very relaxed. I thought of rehearsals. We're a hit. We're a hit already. And don't miss the opening. Listen, we may do another cutaway. I've got another surprise for you. We'll talk to you afterwards. He's got a surprise for us. I don't know what the surprise is. We'll see the club after, later. Okay, fair enough, Alan. Right now we're going to continue with a lot more of the stars. We've got stars, but we've got a commercial break. We'll be back with more from the Shrine Auditorium. Stay with us. We'll be right back. Welcome back. We've got some of the nominees for actor. We also have right here a woman who's getting a lot of attention. Frances McDormand. How are you? All right. Nominating for Mississippi Burning. A lot of people say Frances McDormand. Who is she? Tell us who you are. Where do you come from? M-C-D-O-R-M-A-N-D. That's my last name. I'm from the United States of America, middle of it. I'm not from the South. And I have more than a high school education. You're not a pathetic woman, are you? No, I hope not. I'm not bruised either. At all, like you're doing. And a stage actress. But a lot of people might know you're from Raising, Arizona. Right. Now, Raising, Arizona and Mississippi Burning couldn't be more different. That's my plan. I'm going to fool you every time. You're going to be good. It's a good plan. I hope it works. How are you feeling right now? You seem very calm, very collected. Oh, yeah, well, I'm really enjoying this. It's like the total glamour of Hollywood. Make it all the way. Great. Oh, yeah. Thank you. Good luck to you. Thank you. Nominated again from Mississippi Burning, Frances McDormand. With us here, Dustin Hoffman is coming over. Dustin, how are you? Eddie, how are you? Come on, let's get you both over here. Two nominees for actor, Dustin Hoffman, Edward James Olmos. Welcome. You called in. Here we are. God bless you and thank you for that one. Oh, you're welcome. How are you? I'm very well. How are you doing? Nice to see you. All the way into Poland. How are you? I think we both like to work with each other. I must tell you, this is probably the most inspirational moment of my career so far. Standing here with Dustin, he's entertained all of us for so many years. And then he tells me that I inspired him in Zoot Suit 10 years ago. It's overwhelming. Did you see him in Zoot Suit on the stage? That was great. Dustin, this is not old for you, but you've been here before. This is Eddie's first time. What do you want to tell him? I don't have to. I think he's an artist. God bless you. Thank you. Eddie, if you would explain the haircut. The haircut comes from a film that we're making with Robert M. Young, a thing that deals with the Second World War and the concentration camps. So at the present time, I just came back from Poland. You're going back right after? Tomorrow. I just flew in yesterday. We wish you luck, Eddie. And we have a message for Dustin from Gene Hackman who says you owe him money. You owe him money. He's looking for you. Yes. Dustin, thank you very much. Eddie? Okay. I'm going to say hello to Eddie. Okay, right now we have a special remote for you folks. We have a traffic report. Let's go now to the parking lot of the International House of the Fruits and Specks. Oh, hi there. The couple's approaching us. Don Johnson is here with his fiancee, if you believe the tabloids, Melanie Griffith, and of course, not to forget, Zachary's for a working girl. They are working their way down here right now. Which is appropriate. A moment before, Melanie's mother, Tiffy Hedren, walked by. It must be quite a thrill for her to see her daughter. Lots of families here tonight. The Bridges are here, Lloyd, Bo, and Jeff. They got here a little bit before we did. Let's say hello to Don Johnson. Hello, Don. How are you? I'm good. How are you? Congratulations. Thank you. What a year for you. Are you here? Yes. You too? It is true. You can believe what you read in the papers. Oh, congratulations. That's wonderful. This has been quite a year for the two of you. Don, we hear that you are happier than ever. Is this true? Yeah. That's accurate. Oh. Yeah. I'm really proud of her. And Melanie, it was a long shot for you to get this moving. It's not a long shot for you to get the Academy Award. How do you feel about it? It's not. How do you feel? I feel like I've already won being nominated. I mean, I've got to believe this is the greatest award. Any thoughts about the other two ladies you worked with who were nominated for Best Supporting Actress to Gordy Weaver and Joan Cusack? We get to give the Best Supporting Actress Award, so I hope one of them gets it. Melanie, good luck. Congratulations. Don, good to see you. Okay, we've got more coming, but we have a commercial break. We'll be back live from the Shrine State with us. There's more. The nominees for Best Actress are Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons, Jodie Foster in The Accused, Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, Meryl Streep in A Cry in the Dark, and Sigourney Weaver in Gorillaz in the Mist. Finally, the Board of Governors decided that you should have an Oscar. May I present you with the Oscar? This is an Oscar? It is an Oscar. I knew that Look gave an award, but this is the first time I ever knew that Reader's Digest was in this racket. Well, look, your name is in it. I'll run down to the gas station and have it pumped up. Thank you, Mr. Hershoff. Thank you very much. Okay. All right, welcome back to Bedlam, ladies and gentlemen. The Shrine Auditorium, stars, they are coming. We are right now vamping for a moment because Tom Hanks is about, and there is Lucille Ball on camera with her husband, Gary Morton. Only her second appearance at the Academy will be seen. She's presenting with Bob Hope, isn't she? I believe. Correct. Part of the compadres of the Four Seas of Alan Cohn. Yes, they would be compadres. All right, we are waiting right now on Tom Hanks who is making his way. Let's go quickly to Caroline Schlicht. Caroline. To the IHOP. I'm not sure if you can hear me, but there is no. That's what I was just going to say. Okay, hello, Rita. How are you? Tom Hanks is my wife. Rita. Rita Wilson, Tom. Hi, how are you? Nice to meet you. Hi, how are you doing? I'm fine. How about you? I'm all right. I'm all right. Tom, Tom, you're now nominated for big. You're an esteemed actor, not just a comic actor. Yes. No one has won in a comedy movie since Richard Rufus, I guess, 10 years ago. Does that make it more difficult for you? Oh, I don't think anybody really pays attention to that. I mean, I think it's a lot of fun. I guess I never really thought about big so much as an overt comedy. You know, it's a very honest movie within the confines of this fantasy romance kind of thing. So. Rita, is he being honest with it? Yeah, he is. Oh, yeah. I can hear you. Your work in Punchline was so well explained. That's very good. I wish you could see the gestures that Tom's doing, but I'm so big, I'm completely blocking the bottom half of your body. Your work in Punchline was so acclaimed. Are you surprised that big was chosen over Punchline? I know they're completely different roles and so hard to compare. Now, the great thing about all this is the movies speak for themselves. You can't say anything that's going to change anybody's mind. You can't do anything. You can't pretend that it's something that it's not. I've had the best year any actor could ever hope for between these two movies. I'm incredibly proud of my work in them and the final result of both these things. I had a good time. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I'm so glad you're here. I hope we'll sort of enact some of the highlights from the film. Thank you, Don Lee. It's good to see you. Come out here to play. Have a good time. All right, Meryl Streep is making her way here. Shall we go to commercial? Okay, we'll be back. We hope with Meryl. Stay tuned. We'll be back. The best actors are Gene Hackman, Mississippi Burning, Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man, Edward James Almost, Stand and Deliver, Max von Sydow, Pele the Conqueror, and Tom Hanks, Big. Welcome back. A man who's had his last couple of years been wonderful for him, Martin Short, came out of comedy, is now a major movie star. Well, go on with you. Huh? But this guy told you, you have to switch your hair. You know the fabulous Nancy Short, right? Nancy, how are you? What is this guy like to live with you? He's just as funny at home, I have to say it. That's be annoying after a while. That makes you a saint, I think. Martin, what are you doing now? I just finished a television special, and after that it's it. I'm finished. The career is through. It's all over. Absolutely over. But it was a good run, and I had fun. You have made 12 movies in the last three months, though, haven't you? That's true, yes. How many have you made in the last couple of years? Five. Five movies in the last couple of years. That's literally going from one to another. Yeah. Five movies. Five movies. This is your first Oscar appearance, isn't it? Yes, it is. Surprised when the phone rang and they said, please come. We'd love to have you. I'm honored. Alan Carr was very, very nice to ask me to do this. It's going to be great. I'm looking forward to it. What are you doing? I'm presenting Beth's live-action short film. Get it? Short? We got it. Short film. You see what they've done? Yeah. What are the nominees? Let me test you. Ah, there you have me. Barbara Stanwyck, I think, and Don Adams might be up. I'll have to check my list. Will we? Is Stephen White? Stephen White is not here. Yes. And I really don't. I do need the cue card. Let's talk about my glasses in here. All right, Martin, now that we've exposed you for what you are. I'm fine. Yeah. Thank you, Martin. Thank you. It is nice to meet you. Thank you. Enjoy. Thank you. Thank you very much. Martin Short, of course, came out of that mill called Saturday Night Live and has produced so many movie stars in the last decade. Right now, yes. Uh, Joe Kuczak, I think, was a regular on Saturday Night Live, by the way. For a year, yes, she was. And she's nominated, and we'll be back. I'm gonna be on the air lobby, and we'll be in a movie. Thank you. It's the words I play again, as though that's how it ought to be, because I'm easy. Don't need me on if there's nowhere for you to take me, if loving you would have to be. Best Picture Award are from Warner Brothers, the Accidental Tourist, from Orion Pictures, Mississippi Burning, from United Artists, Rain Man, from 20th Century Fox, Working Girl, and from Warner Brothers, Dangerous Liaison. And from here, live at the Shrine, Sybil Shepherd. Hello, Sybil. How are you? Hi, I'm very excited to be here for the first time. Well, it's actually been 15 years since I was asked to present at the Academy Awards, so this is great fun for me. I feel like I've come home, man. This must be a little strange for you. You started out in our minds as a movie star. Actually, a model. A model, okay. That's true. And then, last picture showing all the movies you did then. Mm-hmm. And then you went home, and then you came back. And then you came back. And then you came back. And then you came back. And then you came back. And then you came back. And then you came back. And then you did a television series that was very successful. Mm-hmm. Now you have Chances Off and movies. The perspective must be different than it was, well, here's a good one. Yes. I guess I'm used to the roller coaster more. I mean, I know that for every up, there's gonna be a valley, so I just enjoy it more because I know that it doesn't last forever. When you hear these folks calling for you, how do you feel? I love it. I love it. You do? Who is your daughter? Well, they're here, but they have enough friends, so they're showering us with joy. And, uh, they just come on over. They're just like, same time time for dinner. I didn't know that. That's your wife. And then I saw her talking to Bill Sibley in the bathroom. Yea. That's a beautiful dress. When you're pregnant, it's not easy. I know, you're pregnant. That's great. Thank you. You have any advice for her? Enjoy it. She's got twins. She's got lots of advice. But I don't think I need to tell her. I think she's already enjoying it. It looks like it. Thank you so much. I know you've got to go inside. Thank you. Have fun. Another one of the stars here from the Shrine Auditorium. And don't you know, we've got more remotes to go to right now. Okay. All right. The effervescent Caroline, Caroline is more spider monkeys. Thank you very much, Caroline Schlit for that on the spot, incisive report. A little, a little earlier, I know that ball, a little earlier, we got to talk to... Mr. Selick. Pretty good looking guy. He came by here. Not bad. Married now. Here we are. Tom Selick and Julie Mack. Julie Mack. Hello. Roll the tape. All right, Tom and Julie. Tom Selick. You're kicking it off, is that correct? Yeah. What does that mean? Well, it means I'm nervous. Yeah, I am kicking it off, but I'm not the host and it's very complex. Explain that, will you? Well, it's the host spot, but, well, I'll explain it tonight. It's exactly what I do. I come out and explain why there's no host. Julie, he says he's nervous. Is that true? Is he, is he nervous? Yes. Little butterflies, what's this? Oh, come on, Tom. I get nervous during your show. I get nervous doing anything. What's up for you now? I'm nervous. I'm nervous. I'm nervous doing anything. What's up for you now? I'm doing a movie called Hard Rain, directed by Peter Yates for Touchstone. It's kind of a serious drama about a guy who ends up in prison, so I've been in the joint for the last few weeks and I'm glad to get out. How are you doing outside? Are you adjusting to the outside now? Yeah, well, no, truly, we were in a maximum security prison in Carson City, Nevada, and it was pretty rough for about three weeks, so I am glad to get out. You often hear people say when they spend time there, even if they're just observing or working, it gets to you. Well, all our extras were inmates, so it was a little tricky. We wore orange construction vests when we rehearsed and then we took them off for the shots so the guards would know who to shoot, you know, if somebody misbehaved. I felt naked without my orange construction vest. Are you going back to it? Yeah, oh yeah, we have about another two months. All right, Tom, thank you. It's good to see you again. Jilly Mack, thank you. All right, see you later. Ah, here we are back live again. That was Jilly and Tom. You know, having been here for so many years, one of the things that I've already noticed, Steve, is an Alan Carr promise is that there would be a return to glamour this year. They hired Fred Heyman, the great retailer in Beverly Hills, to costume some of the ladies, and it's true, I haven't seen the get-ups, which is what they were in past years at some of the ladies where everybody really has looked marvelous. You know who probably looks better than anybody this time? Brunhilde herself. Look at Tawny, she looks great. Hey, Dana, can you see Tawny over there, it's boggles. She looks great, absolutely. And speaking of glamour, I have a man here who could be, how you doing, Ed McMan? I'd like to run for mayor of Hollywood. That'd be a nice way to close it out. I'm doing fine, thank you. Well, I want to know, when do you have time to see movies? On Monday. We go on Monday afternoon to West Lake, I mean, Westwood or to the Cineplex, you know, in Century City, and we get to see them, and sometimes we're invited to homes where they have movie projectors and they show them and so forth. So we see them. Well, great, do you have a favorite this year? Well, I love Gorillaz in the Mist. I know it's not going to win, but I love the fact that it was such a dangerous undertaking for them to do something like that, to try to do something like that and succeed, and I thought the movie was wonderful. A couple of favorites, I love Dustin Hoffman, I love Meryl Streep, Jack, I have a lot of favorites, so it's hard for me to pick. A wonderful lineup. Thank you very much for talking with us, Ed McMan. We've got a whole list of stars that are going to be here throughout the evening. Tony Little is going to come back here at the 10-15 show. I'm going to go over to Vertigo for an Elmer Scott A benefit, and we're going to have lots of celebrity interviews, and we'll see you then. Have a good one. Back to you at the Shrine. Thank you, Betty Jade. Thank you, Big Ed. A little bit earlier, a man who is a rock star and an incipient movie star. On his way to being a movie star, how's that? That's very good. All right, Phil Collins. I'm a little bit better myself. Let's roll the tape. Phil Collins, if you would please, right here. Thank you, Phil. Steve Etteris and Tony. Phil, you've been here before. I have. You are now a full-fledged movie star. That's very kind of you to say that. I wouldn't say quite yet I'm a full-fledged movie star. How did you feel about your experience making the movie Buster? I had a wonderful time. I really enjoyed the experience tremendously. Is it true that you didn't want to do the music for it? You ended up with one of your biggest hits, Two Hearts, for me. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it. The movie was hampered by very bad distribution. I was upset by it. There's nothing I can do about that. Maybe next time. Now that you've been part of the Oscar ceremonies in previous years, you're here again. You backed it in front of the camera. Do you have the urge to get in there and maybe accept one of these little gold statues one of these days? I'd love to. Who wouldn't, right? Is that kind of a silly question? Next. Thank you. Lamont, good to see you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Unless I didn't point out Lamont is Lamont Dozier, who has written probably more hits than I have. I've written probably more hits songs in the last 20 years than just about anybody. Somebody. There's an eruption in the crowd. Let's see if we can get a shot. And there hasn't been one for a long time. I wonder who it is. And who it is. There is Cher, ladies and gentlemen. Cher with Rob Kamaletti making her way down. We'll see if we get a shot of talking to her. We don't know if we can. She, of course, will be presenting the Best Actor Award tonight, that being what the Academy always does. They flip-flop if you win the award. Hello, hello. How are you? Come say hello real quick. Come on. Yeah. All right. Is it easier for this year? I don't know. It's never easy. I get so nervous at these things. You know what you're going to say. No. You look great, sir. Bye-bye. Thanks. And she means it. That's exactly how we feel because we haven't known what we're going to be saying. Cher, of course, was the winner last year. One for Moonstruck. She was nominated for Stillswood. Yes. And she's a woman who has turned a career around. She thought of being a pop singer with a short shelf life. She has become one of our major stars. Again, we're looking at the shocks of the arrivals here at the Shrine Auditorium. And as we were saying, Steven, we were off camera a moment ago, in all the years that we've done this, I've never seen it so calm. This is as orderly as I have ever seen it. Really quite incredible. And it's too bad for us because normally this is the time of the show that we have tons of people to interview and they're not here. All the stars are gone. Right. They're all inside. No lines, no wait. They're inside. They're inside. They're inside. Which is where they should be. Now as we watch the Academy Awards, watch for this. Alan Carr says he's going to try to bring it in. On time. Under Lawrence of Arabia. Now last year's show was the longest Academy Award show ever. It was three hours and 45 minutes. Supposed to be three hours long. So we'll see what happens tonight. Right. Watch the Academy Awards. After that, there will be a Barbara Walters special with three very, very famous women. And then after that, we'll be back with our post after the Oscar bit show. I never know what we call it. I don't even know. We're doing it. Thank you very much. And evening at the Academy Awards, the winners, Pauly is going to take her dress and her body and head over to Spago to be interviewing the winners. Find a few folks for you. And the losers. So it is a good time for all of us. The revelers. Again, we want to compliment the people here. They've done it so well that from the madness of before, it's actually sterile now. Let's go on to the Academy Awards. We'll see you later. Goodbye, everybody. Good night, everybody. Coming up next, the 61st Annual Academy Awards, live, followed by the Barbara Walters special. The most famous guests tonight are Audrey Hepburn, Diana Ross, and Candice Bergen. Then don't wait till tomorrow morning to hear what the winners of the Oscar are saying tonight. You're invited to all the parties with us as Hollywood's biggest night continues with film critic Roger Ebert, Steve Edwards, and Tawny Little. Visit with tonight's Oscar winners live on and evening at the Academy Awards, the winners. And we'll see you then.
